REELIN’ FOR RESEARCH

The 6th Annual Reelin’ for Research Offshore Fishing Tournament was held May 3rd, 2014 in Morehead City, NC. This one day fishing tournament raises awareness and money for children’s cancer research, with all money raised donated to NC Children’s Promise, the non-profit arm of the N.C. Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill. With the help of close friends, tournament chairman, Richard Montana, began the tournament in 2009 in memory of his father, Tony Montana, who passed away from cancer. One hundred percent of proceeds go to support the Tony Montana Fellowship each year within the Pediatric Hematology-Oncology department at UNC Hospital. This year’s tournament will be in memory of Dylan Price who battled leukemia and recently passed away due to complications following a bone marrow transplant. Dylan and his family have been strong supporters and advocates of Reelin’ for Research for the past several years. Dylan was 16-years-old.

6th ANNUAL FISHING TOURNAMENT BENEFITING CHILDHOOD CANCER RESEARCH

Participants in Reelin’ for Research came from all over North Carolina for competition, camaraderie and the common cause of raising money for pediatric cancer research. Teams compete to catch the most aggregate weight in fish (Tuna, Mahi, Wahoo, Mako). Each team is responsible for raising a minimum of $1,000 for their entry fee with 100 percent of all entry fees donated directly to the NC Children’s Promise. The tournament is 100% volunteer supported.

It was a great day for the anglers, but most importantly, a great day for the NC Children’s Hospital. Tonight we were proud and humbled to be able to present a check for $429,000 to Dr. Stuart Gold, director of hematology and oncology at the hospital. This by far broke our goal of raising one million dollars in 10 years, bringing the total raised to $1,003,643 in just 6 years!!!

This $ will be used to fund research into finding new treatments, and ultimately one day, a cure for pediatric cancer.
