Bump
Rock and Bang
Business
A
fter a couple of days cruising the Florida west coat in fantastic weather and a kindly sea I transited the Caloosahatchee River to haul-out and refit before hurricane season arrives. I always look forward to refits as I enjoy working on the boat as much as I do being underway. I’m fond of DIY yards that don’t have any requirements to use the marina staff for anything. Being a fulltime cruiser, I also want to live on the boat while working. Doing the work yourself leaves you in a better position later to effect repairs in an emergency. If you did the work and it fails later down the way, you will be an expert on how to best fix it. I equally enjoy the boatyard culture complete with sunset community meals and ad hoc music jams. Being in the yards is a time when you can relax your self-reliant fervor a little. However, if you spend any time out here in Waterworld you will have a growing list of things that just piss you off. Any lifestyle has its good and bad points and we all like to think that fulltime cruising is somehow exempt, but of course it is not. I read a cartoon recently; the first frame was a couple screaming expletives at each other from the cockpit to the bow while anchoring; the next frame was the same couple sitting in the cockpit drinking wine acknowledging how great life on a boat is. There is nothing you can do when a couple like this interrupts your peace as they anchor next to you except smile, wave and say “welcome to the harbor”. Other events make me want to re-write the Jimmy Buffet lyrics from “these three-day tourists are really a bore” to “these three-day tourists are really dangerous”. Case in point; Tourist with more money than seamanship fires up his mega yacht, flies past me doing 15 knots and throwing a four-foot wake in an inlet with restricted maneuverability. Or worse, the same tourist throws the same wake at boats on a dock….bump, rock and bang. It is a conflicting human dichotomy of wanting to have our way even when we hate that behavior being applied to us. When boaters are underway they want to be unimpeded even if it means waking docked boats. Conversely, the same boater will scream bloody murder to anyone who wakes them while they are at the dock. The only resolution to this type of conflict is discipline and pride in the “craft of seamanship”. Thoreau taught us long ago that the “undisciplined life is not worth living”. Apply a little reasoning to this and it is an easy step to realize that undisciplined actions are an abject annoyance to everyone. Out here on the water they can also be costly and dangerous. Way before Thoreau we had a thing called the “Golden Rule”, you remember, the one that goes: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”.

Low Hours Motivated Seller: Deep-V hull with moderate beam and a solid fiberglass bottom. The layout below includes a dinette that converts into a berth, along with an enclosed head and shower, and of course a midberth aft. Privacy curtains separate the sleeping areas from the main cabin which is highlighted by three overhead hatches and attractive burlwood cabinetry. The cockpit comes with a wet bar and a removable table in addition to a fore-and-aft facing bench seats, and the entire cockpit sole raises on hydraulic rams to reveal the engine compartment. The stylish tiered helm is particularly well arranged. An efficient and powerful 300hp MerCruiser 5.7L 350CID displacement sterndrive gas engine with Bravo III dual prop drive will cruise this Sundancer at 20-25 knots and reach a top speed of around 35 knots.

Cruising: Fixing Your Boat In Exotic Places “I’m Sorry,” is what they each said. “I will pay for any and all damages to make you whole,” they followed up with. We’re living the dream…right? Our journey brought us to Carolina Beach after a series of unfortunate events. We were unlucky enough to be hit twice in one year. Twice. One year. Both incidents involved captains of motorboats who didn’t take wind into account when navigating within marinas. We don’t usually dock in most places, but because we had a little human in tow, it was a natural choice in order to have the ease of getting all of the baby equipment on and off the boat. For any of you who are parents, the struggle is real, and even more painful when living on a boat. The first incident occurred in our homeport of Newport, RI. Our boat neighbor, who never takes his boat off the dock, decided to take his boat out for a harbor cruise on the windiest day of the summer. He reversed and the wind took him right into us, crushing our davits and our wind generator. He backed out his vessel and when pulling forward, he hit us again. This time, he pushed our davits back the other way, but pushed our entire boat into the dock, scratching our boat. He also punctured our dinghy that was hanging on our davits and scratched the name of our boat on the stern. This all happened while we were away for a baby doctor’s appointment, so upon return we spoke to our neighbor. Honestly, we felt bad for him. The second incident occurred in Hope Town Bahamas, where yet again, a captain came flying into the harbor not phased by the 30+ knots of wind blowing. Instead of putting his bow into the wind and letting the wind guide him back into his spot, he tried backing into his spot like an SUV in a parking lot. His perpendicular turn almost took out five boats, but ultimately only hit ours. Yay! Lucky us. His anchor played our rigging like a guitar and when he went to correct, he hit us again. This time he pushed us into the dock, scratching our boat with his anchor, tearing our canvas, and bending all of our stanchions and lifelines in on the starboard side (right side looking at the bow). After the second incident, our hearts were crushed. The insurance company was dragging its feet on the first claim and now we had another one to deal with. If anyone has ever endured a claim on their car or their house, the process is not the same with a boat. Typically, a home or car claim would not take a year to resolve. They would never let you live in a home for a year with significant repairs necessary. They do with boats since they are deemed recreational. They don’t care that you won’t have use of your boat for a long period of time. An incident occurring outside of the US is also an added complication. They don’t have to adhere to US claim processing regulations. We had to just hope and pray that we would be paid in good faith. We also needed to get an estimate in order to begin the process, so we had to get the boat back to the US. En route, our engine failed and we were forced to sail 100 nautical miles, anchored in the most uncomfortable places to get come shut eye (think… BIG rollers), and headed to the nearest port of Nassau, Bahamas. We had attempted to make a crossing to the US, but our weather window closed for crossing the Gulf Stream. We had no choice but to get towed into Nassau harbor. 12 I found it in the Coastal Mariner

It took two and a half months for mechanics in Nassau to fix our engine, which they ultimately rebuilt, but installed partially incorrectly, starving our engine of oil. This required us to get another tow at the Gulf Stream to Palm Beach, Florida instead of our intended destination of North Carolina. We spent a week in Florida before we were finally able to bring our boat to the Wilmington area for her much needed estimate and repairs. After all was said and done, it took well over a year from the date of both incidents to settle with each insurance company. This included paying for an attorney to fight for us, and ultimately settling for a lesser amount than what it will take to repair her (50% for the second incident). We know we should be grateful. We often try to turn our focus to that. We have each other. We have had great adventures. We have a healthy and beautiful son. We would be lying if we said we didn’t feel defeated at times. Ultimately, our boat has been out of the water for almost a year. The first yard we had her at, didn’t make any progress at all. We opted to move her to Carolina Beach Boatyard because we have been renting a condo nearby and had heard great things about the yard from the community we have grown to know and love. Our boat has been recently beautifully painted, and soon she will be returned to her glory. We will also have our centerboard serviced (not accident related), and a new hardtop installed (also not accident related). We opted to put a hardtop on instead of replacing the damaged canvas. Our experience at the Carolina Beach Boatyard has been a breath of fresh air. Brandy, the woman who runs the yard, runs a tight ship. She is proactive in communication and scheduling. We have ventured to many yards up and down the East coast and unfortunately our experience is usually that they never do what they say they are going to do. This is not the case here and we couldn’t be happier about it. She is a beautiful old boat, but most importantly, she is a home to us. So we will take the good with the bad, and be grateful we can have the opportunity to fix her in exotic places.
