Battery Charger Voltage

For a zinc anode to provide any protection, it must be in electrical contact with the metal being protected. The conductivity of the water is not adequate. We need low-resistance, metalto-metal contact--either by mounting the zinc directly to the metal being protected or by connecting the two with a wire. A hanging anode can provide protection if it is connected by a wire to the metal being protected. Where the zinc is mounted directly to the protected metal--bolted to the side of a metal rudder, for example--it is essential to make sure the surface under the zinc is bare and bright before the anode is installed. This is to ensure good electrical contact.

By Don Casey Revised by BoatUS editors in April 2012

No paint

Because 12-volt gel batteries cannot tolerate a charge voltage above around 14.1 volts, multi-

Props and rudders

stage chargers generally limit charging voltage to that level. This makes the charger safe for gel batteries but slower to charge wet-cell batteries. Weekend boaters won’t notice the difference, but for those needing to recharge only wet-cell batteries in the shortest time possible, battery chargers with a higher output voltage--typically around 14.4 volts--are available.

Propellers are normally protected by a zinc collar fashioned in two pieces and bolted together around the shaft forward of the propeller. It is essential to make sure the shaft is clean and bright before clamping the collar to it. Corrosion protection for outboard and outdrive propellers is typically provided by a bolt-in-place zinc ring or a zinc prop nut.

When the battery reaches full charge, multi-stage chargers switch to a lower voltage. The intent is to maintain the charge without gassing the electrolyte. Chargers are not perfect at this, however, and you should frequently check the water level in the batteries. If the boat will be unattended for more than a week, a simple precaution is to plug the charger into a lamp timer to limit its operation to an hour or two per day.

Metal rudders and struts are most easily protected with zinc disks bolted directly to the metal. Rudder zincs have a shallow dome shape to streamline them and minimize their drag and turbulence.

Sacrificial Anodes Revised by BoatUS editors in April 2012Any time you have two different metals that are physically or electrically connected and immersed in seawater, they become a battery. Some amount of current flows between the two metals. The electrons that make up that current are supplied by one of the metals giving up bits of itself--in the form of metal ions--to the seawater. This is called galvanic corrosion and, left unchecked, it quickly destroys underwater metals. The most common casualty of galvanic corrosion is a bronze or aluminum propeller on a stainless steel shaft, but metal struts, rudders, rudder fittings, outboards, and stern drives are also at risk. The way we counteract galvanic corrosion is to add a third metal into the circuit, one that is quicker than the other two to give up its electrons. This piece of metal is called a sacrificial anode, and most often it is zinc. In fact, most boaters refer to sacrificial anodes simply as zincs. It would be hard to overstate the importance of maintaining the anodes on your boat. When an anode is missing or largely wasted away, the metal component it was installed to protect begins to dissolve--guaranteed. How much zinc The amount of protection a zinc anode provides depends on its surface area. The zinc surface area needed varies with the kind of metal being protected and with the chemical make-up of the water, but you can use 1% of the surface area of the protected metal as a starting point. Check the protected metal frequently. If it shows signs of corrosion despite the zinc, you need more surface area. Zincs should be replaced when about half of the anode has been lost to corrosion. Ideally we want that to occur not more frequently than annually. The longevity of a sacrificial zinc anode is a function of its weight. When a zinc lasts less than a year, you need one with more weight. Normally, however, you are not faced with determining the appropriate anode size (other than diameter for a zinc shaft collar). Rather, you are simply replacing depleted zincs with new ones of the same size. Check all zincs at least annually and replace all that are half depleted. Here are some replacement guidelines. Electrical contact is essential There is an unfortunate misconception that a sacrificial anode can be mounted anywhere, even hung over the side on a string, and it will still perform its appointed duty. That is dead wrong!

12 I found it in The Coastal Mariner

September 2012

Sacrificial anodes cannot perform their function unless they are exposed. Putting paint on an anode smothers it, rendering it useless. Never coat anodes with bottom paint, or anything else.

Hull plates Bonding is a different subject altogether, but boats with all underwater fittings bonded together electrically are typically fitted with one or more zinc plates bolted to the hull. The mounting bolts for these anodes are connected by heavy-gauge electrical cable to the bonding circuit. If these anodes are allowed to deplete or if the electrical connection deteriorates, other underwater metal, such as bronze through-hull fittings, will begin to corrode. Zinc hull plates are also fitted to metal boats to protect the hull. Needless to say, such anodes must be carefully monitored. Outdrives The mix of immersed metals makes stern drives and outboards particularly prone to galvanic corrosion. Many are fitted with multiple anodes. Typically, these include at a minimum a sacrificial trim tab (intended to warn you of depletion by a change in steering), a zinc plate or two attached to the gear case or the anti-ventilation plate, and perhaps anodes in the exhaust cavity and in the cooling-water jacket. It is a good idea to consult your engine manual to be sure you know where every anode is located. Then check all of them and renew any that are more than half depleted. Zinc pencils Heat exchangers, because they are typically a copper alloy, are at risk of galvanic corrosion. To combat this, many heat exchangers are fitted with a zinc “pencil anode. You will find it (or not) under a brass plug in the exchanger. The pencil is unscrewed from the plug for replacement. Some engines have a similar zinc pencil inside the cooling-water jacket to protect dissimilar metals in the engine. Determine if your engine and heat exchanger are fitted with internal anodes, and if so, check them at least annually. If they are half depleted. . .well, you know. Not zinc In recent years cadmium in zinc has become an environmental concern, leading to a movement in the direction of aluminum anodes. Such anodes are effective even for protecting aluminum components--lower end cases, for example--because the aluminum used in the anode is a more anodic alloy. Aluminum alloy anodes are almost certainly to become more common. It has not happened already only because the cost of aluminum anodes has been higher than zinc without any discernable benefit to the boatowner. Today aluminum is actually cheaper than zinc. In addition, aluminum anodes tend to last longer, they work better than zinc in brackish water (and maybe in salt water as well) and they appear to be better for the environment. When making the switch from zinc to aluminum, ALL of your anodes must be aluminum. This can be a problem in some locales as many local marine suppliers still do not stock a wide selection of aluminum anodes. That will eventually change. In fresh water, magnesium anodes protect underwater metals better, particularly underwater aluminum. However, magnesium is a good choice for freshwater only. If any of your boating is also in brackish or salt water, fit aluminum anodes.

Cape Lookout September Fishing Forecast by Capt. Noah Lynk

843-577-7222

With summer pretty much gone and fall just around the corner, the fishing around the Cape Lookout and Harkers Island

areas is really going to be heating up. We have already been seeing some nice Red Fish and Speckled Trout being caught inside the marshes and inside waters of Core Sound, North River and around the Marshallberg area. The annual migration of Flounder heading offshore for the winter is just getting started as well and we are seeing some really nice fish that have been sitting way up the creeks feeding all summer. This time of year most of these inshore species are feeding on live shrimp. You will also increase your chances of boating nice fish by fishing up inside the nursery areas where shrimping is not allowed. There are usually an abundance of shrimp in these areas and the fish always follow the food. If you are using live bait, the best choice is going to be live shrimp or mud minnows. The Cajun Thunder and Bay Slayer popping corks which are heavier and easier to cast in the wind are a good choice for fishing mud minnows. When fishing with artificial baits such as top water baits and suspending baits, the best baits in my opinion are going to be the new Mirro Lures in the MR series. The best being the MR11, 14, 17, 27, Mirro Lure top dog, she dog, top dog JR, the top water spook lures by Bomber baits, and the X-Rap series of lures by Rapala. Other artificials like the scented soft baits such as the Deep Creek Lures and the Berkley Gulp are excellent choices. The best patterns to use in the soft baits during the fall season are going to be the curly tails and the shrimp. Another seldom used but highly efficient lure for Drum and Flounder is going to be the spinner baits with either the willow leaf blade or the round Colorado blade. There are several different brands such as the Red Fish Magic, Deep Creek Turner Burner, and the Billy Bay by Betts. Those looking for that extra edge when using hard baits, soft baits and top water baits you need to try out Pro Cure Bait Scents. Pro Cure comes in lots of different formulas such as mullet, shrimp, menhaden, blue crab and Inshore Saltwater which is a combination of all the above ground into one scent. This stuff is the real deal and works really well. For those looking for Pro Cure scents several local tackle shops carry it or you can contact me at noahsarkchartersinc@gmail.com. One thing to remember is that once fall fishing comes on strong you do not want to be trying to get your gear and tackle together. By then it’s too late so don’t wait. Get busy now and get the tackle you’re going to need because once the season sets in a lot of shops are already sold out of the best lures. Don’t be left watching the other guys catch the fish wishing you had already done your homework. I am beginning to book up for fall charters so please give me a call early to get your spot. I hope everyone has a great September start to the fall fishing season. Visit www. noahsarkfishingcharters.com for more information.

Record Breaking

Tarpon

Angler, Jimmy Aboud of team “Outcast” caught a record breaking 198-pound Tarpon in the first session of the Trini Tarpon Tournament which began on Saturday, July 28th 2012. Jimmy’s catch broke the previous Trinidad and Tobago record which was held by JP Agostini, also from Trinidad. JP’s fish was caught in the TTGFA Tarpon Thunder tournament in 2007 and weighed 187 lbs. JP said that he was proud to have been the record holder for the last five (5) years and was pleased to have the record broken by a young Trinidadian. Agostini went on to say that these record breaking catches are great news for Trinidad as it will help promote the island as a major destination for Tarpon fishing. Captain Peter Aboud of team “Outcast” said that the record breaking fish was caught in the first session of the two day tournament. The fish was caught less than a minute after his team released a 120-pound Tarpon. Aboud said his 18 year old son has been fishing Tarpon in Trinidad waters for the last five years but this catch was by far his most rewarding.

Rods The Best ofand Both Reels By Ernie Horvath Over the past several months I have contributed articles on custom

rods, factory rods, rod care, rod building, repairs and Micro guides compared to conventional set-ups. I have also discussed reels, reel repair, user care, and factors to consider when purchasing new rods and reels, custom or factory, to inform and educate fisherman to get the best on your investment. Rod and reel performance as a combination should be considered above cost if possible. If price is your key factor, get the best you can afford. A prime example is the new lite but very durable carbon fiber high modulus micro-guide rods paired with new lite-weight durable reels weighing in at just over ten ounces as a combo. Pricey, yes, but drop it overboard and it almost floats or suspends allowing ample time to retrieve the set-up without having to jump-in. A standard set-up will normally sink before you can get your wallet out and jump-in. Well, who is going to jump in 50 degree water? Now I have to admit a two-speed 80lb. setup is not going to float. If anyone has ever questioned my knowledge of rods and reels, I have to tell you that as far back as 1981 I started repairing reels out of necessity and as a hobby for myself and my fishing friends in our military community. My son and I started repairing rods in 1983 for the same reasons. With our introduction to Rodcrafters we have participated in and instructed at seminars from Tennessee to Florida to Pennsylvania through 2005. I started my retail rod business in 1991 and added reel repair in 1994. So now you know why I’m so anal about rod and reel care and maintenance as your dentist is about telling you to keep your teeth clean.

{IF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL

}

Prime example: On a recent fishing trip to the Gulf coast most of the rods on the boat were built by me and the reels serviced at least annually by me but for some reason a few of the 30lb. reels didn’t make it to me for service. Of course on the first hook-up which was a red-snapper the reel locks-up. One of my best friends, Gilligan, with the rod firmly in his gut yells, “Can you fix it? “NO”, I responded. Let the circus begin as we began hand lining the snapper in with the drag backed off all because of non-service and a bad thrust bearing. Was this a great lesson, you bet. The rest of the trip went without incident with limits of Kings on lite tackle and limits of Red-snapper on the 30lb. set-ups. Incidentally we are all still the best of friends. While on the trip we introduced lite tough 6’6” spinning rods with 6000 series reels. The mini-guide set-up worked perfect even with 15lbs. of drag on the reels. With all the guides on the bottom of the rod, left-right torque was totally eliminated. Everyone enjoyed using the spinning setups over conventional combos. In recapping, having the best rod and reel set-up is irrelevant if you don’t maintain your equipment. If you frequently use your rods and reels, service twice a year. For normal use, service them once a year. Be sure to rinse both the rod and reel after each use. I hope you enjoy the summer but most of all enjoy fishing with your family and friends. Any comments or questions are encouraged.
