THE VISITORS...

HULL CITY

North Ferriby United welcome Hull City to the Eon Visual Media Stadium ahead of the annual Billy Bly Memorial Match... The 2015/16 season was one to remember for both North Ferriby United and Hull City with promotion for both the eventual outcome. The Tigers overcame Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley to bounce back to the Premier League thanks to a Mo Diame screamer, whilst the Villagers secured promotion in the most dramatic of circumstances beating AFC Fylde after extra-time in the Play-Off Final. Since then both clubs have similarly endured uncertain times leaving their achievements last season in danger of being overshadowed. A swift wind of change has blown through North Ferriby seeing the departure of Billy Heath and Mark Carroll to FC Halifax Town. Said loss has seen 4

an exodus of players follow the duo back to the National League North leaving gaping chasms in the Ferriby team. Of the players to leave the ones most felt will be the loss of Liam King and Tom Denton who, between them last campaign, bagged 40 goals. The Tigers themselves are shrouded with talks of a takeover bid with a Monday deadline for talks to progress been and gone. Today’s game marks the annual Billy Bly memorial match with the Tigers the current holders of the trophy. City came back from 1-0 down after Danny Hone had give Ferriby a 12th minute advantage. Greg Luer and Alex Bruce both found the back of the net in a seven minute spell as the Tigers claimed a pre-season victory.

A ball has barely been kicked in preseason and already Hull have been dealt a bitter blow with the news that Allan McGregor will have to undergo surgery to correct a longstranding back problem. The injury will see the goalkeeper out of action for four to six months meaning Eldin Jakupovic is likely to start this match in goal. The Tigers may delve into the market for another shot-stopper.

Steve Bruce signed a real gem when he took Andy Robertson to the KC Stadium from Dundee United for the modest sum of ÂŁ2.85million in July 2014. The Scottish international has gone onto develop into a mainstay in the team providing pace on the break and must now be considered one of the most promising left-backs in the country.

MICHAEL DAWSON

TOM HUDDLESTONE

A natural leader in the heart of the defence for the Tigers, if Hull are to maintain their Premier League status he will have to stay fit for large parts of the season. Michael Dawson has a vast wealth of experience to bring to the table which will only benefit the likes of Harry Maguire and co.

Recently penning a new two-year deal with the newly-promoted side, Tom Huddlestone has made 123 appearances for the club since his then club record move from Tottenham Hostspur for a fee of around ÂŁ5million. The midfielder is likely to the focal point in the centre of the park dictating play where he can alongside Jake Livermore.

THE OPPOSITION

THE RISING STAR

HARRY MAGUIRE MO DIAME Mo Diame wrote his name in the Hull City history books after his goal against Sheffield United at Wembley was the difference, sending the club back to the promised land. He scored his fair share of goals in the top flight including crackers against Newcastle United and his former side West Ham. City need his individual brilliance to shine through more often next season.

JAKE LIVERMORE The engine room of the midfield, Jake Livermore is likely to be a crucial cog in the Hull City wheel and need him to produce the performances of last season continually if they are to survive in the top league.

Harry Maguire has already won the hearts and minds of the Hull City fans with some performances befitting of a veteran centrehalf rather than a promising 23-year-old. Tipped to push for a regular starting spot in defence, Maguire has come of age in the Championship and looks every bit a star in the making.

THE GAFFER

ROBERT SNODGRASS

ABEL HERNANDEZ

Robert Snodgrass will feel he has unfinished business with the Premier League after suffering a dislocated kneecap during their 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers. The Scotsman showed he is getting back to his best last season and will want to kick on and get another strong season under his belt.

After a rough first season in England Abel Hernandez has now emerged as the spear head of the Hull City attack after firing the Tigers to promotion. The Uruguayan international bagged an impressive 20 goals last season and has been subject of interest from Italian clubs. After finally starting to justify his hefty ÂŁ10million pound price tag Hull will be desperate to keep hold of their star striker.

STEVE BRUCE

The man at the helm and looking to guide the Tigers to Premier League safety is Steve Bruce. The 55-year-old guided the club to promotion for the second time during his tenure at the KCOM Stadium. Has in the media been linked with the vacant managerial position at England highlighting his credentials as a manager. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

This proved to be a fairly comfortable for The Villagers on a sultry afternoon. Ferriby enjoyed the greater possession throughout the game and generally looked comfortable in defence against game Hall road side. Ferriby got off to a good start with a goal after just eight minutes. Durran Reynolds long throw-in was headed home from close range by Jamil Ible. Curtis Bateson was a constant threat in the first-half and saw a shot beaten away by Rangers’ keeper Jordan Douglas. Rangers came close to equalising after 22 minutes when Jack Binns headed wide at the far post following a neat three-man move. Ferriby continued to control the game and a second goal came after 33 minutes. Alex Davidson burst down the centre before releasing Danny Clarke who slid the ball past the

Ferriby surprised their League Two neighbours by taking a two-nil half-time lead. The first-half was an entertaining game with both sides prepared to play constructive an d attractive football. The first ten minutes belonged to The Villagers but only went close through a Stve Brogan free-kick that curled wide of the far post. Grimsby played themselves in to the game after 10 minutes. Danny Andrew’s free-kick drew a good flying save from Ferriby keeper Rory

Watson. The keeper did well again to save from James Berrett after 17 minutes. Star striker Omar Bogle should probably have scored after 19 minutes but put the ball wide after a good three-man move. It probably summed up Bogle’s evening. He had a few opportunities but found himself constantly harassed by Ferriby’s Jameel Ible and Mark gray in the first-half and by Jordan Cooke and Durran Reynolds in the second. Ferriby expected a response from Grimsby after the interval and it came after 47 minutes when Luke Summerfield scored with a cross-shot from the left corner of the penalty area. Ferriby manager Steve Housham made regular substitutions throughout the half but they did not really disrupt the team’s performance. Ferriby got their third goal after 61 minutes. Steve Brogan wrongfooted a defender before scoring from 18 yards. Three minutes later the game was over. Vincent Mukendi out-paced the defence before hitting the ball past the advancing keeper. Grimsby kept looking for goals but were getting little change from The Villagers’ defence and midfield. Watson was forced into one save and substitute Craig Ellison had to make another but, all in all, Grimsby did not really look likely to score in the final minutes.

TRANSFER NEWS

2016/17 INS & OUTS

The Villagers programme take a look at the comings and goings at North Ferriby United after a busy few weeks on the transfer front. We give a warm welcome to our new players and bid a fond farewell to the ones departed...

Goalkeeper Tom Nicholson left the Villagers favouring a move to FC Halifax Town and, despite being used as an understudy to Adam Nicklin for the majority of his time at the club, the shot-stopper played well when called upon. Halifax has also signed Steven Drench from Guiseley so it’ll be interesting to see what part Nicholson plays next year.

IN - CONNER ROBINSON Former Lincoln City striker Conner Robinson became the first signing under new boss Steve Housham. The 21-year-old featured 17 times for the Imps last season in the National League before a loan spell with Boston United.

OUT - TOM NICHOLSON IN - RORY WATSON North Ferriby United completed the season-long loan signing of goalkeeper Rory Watson on 1 July with the youngster turning down a move to a League One side. The 20-yearold, who is set to be one of the youngest in his position, is out of contract at the Tigers and is keen to impress.

OUT - JOSH WILDE The first player to leave the Villagers ahead of the new campaign was 24-year-old Josh Wide. The near everpresent full-back went about his business quietly and confidently putting in plenty of assured performances since his arrival back in March 2014 from Gainsborough Trinity.

TRANSFER NEWS

OUT - WAYNE BROOKSBY No stranger to the Eon Visual Media Stadium having had three spells at the club at various times, Wayne Brooksby opted to ply his trade with Harrogate Town for the coming season. The winger will be fondly remembered for his equalising goal in the Play-Off final triumph over AFC Fylde.

OUT - DANNY HONE Another one of Villagers contingent to join FC Halifax Town is that of centre-back Danny Hone. The 26-year-old admitted it was a “no brainer to follow Heath to the Shay, citing the manager as a big factor in the move. The defender joined North Ferriby ahead of the 2013/14 season from Gainsborough Trinity and scored the winner against AFC Fylde in the Play-Off success.

After playing over 180 games for Bradford Park Avenue, Nathan Hotte joined North Ferriby United in June 2015 for a second time. After playing his part in leading the club to promotion he like so many others joined FC Halifax Town.

OUT - NATHAN HOTTE

OUT - TOM DENTON Tom Denton became the second player to leave Ferriby and join FC Halifax Town citing a reunion with Billy Heath at The Shay a factor in the move. The towering centre forward found the net 21 times last season and his physical presence, coupled with his goalscorring attributes, will be missed. 16

TRANSFER NEWS

OUT - LIAM KING Likely to be the departure most felt by North Ferriby is that of Liam King to FC Halifax Town. The influential captain led the side with some heroic performances which included lifting the FA Trophy at Wembley and winning promotion last year. Scorer of 19 goals from midfield the void left by King will be hard to fill.

IN - SIMON RUSSELL Former Gainsborough Trinity midfielder Simon Russell was the second player to join North Ferriby after their promotion to the National League. The 31-year-old made over 125 appearances for Trinity and had prior experience at Hull City, Kidderminster Harriers, York City, Lincoln City and Cambridge United.

OUT - ASH PALMER Another departure which is likely to hit the Villagers is that of Ash Palmer who left for pastures new with Guiseley. The centre-half won all three Player of the Season awards which is testimony to the performances the 23-yearold put in last year.

IN - STEVE BROGAN Steve Brogan became the third player to make the switch to North Ferriby and is no stranger to manager Steve Housham having played under him whilst at Gainsborough Trinity. The 28-year-old has made over 50 appearances for Rotherham United and featured for various clubs in the lower levels such as Forest Green Rovers, Stalybridge Celtic, Guiseley and Alfreton Town. GUEST COLUMN

View From The

STANDS

North Ferriby United regular Sam Shepherd give us his take on all things relating to the Villagers in his column. This week Sam talks about pre-season and looks ahead to the new season... Here we go again with another historic season in prospect for North Ferriby United. No matter how well the team perform next season it will be a memorable one. A few years ago no-one would have believed Ferriby were capable of reaching the top tier of non-league football. It was a marvellous achievement but as we all know a lot has changed at the club since Danny Hone scored in extra time against Fylde to see us promoted. Our most successful management team ever have departed along with our top scorer Tom Denton and legends like Liam King. Palmer, Wilde, Hone, Nicklin, Brooksby and Hotte have all left for pastures new, meaning our squad for this Conference Premier season will have a very different feel to it to the team of last season. A new manager had to be appointed and I would like to welcome Steve Housham to the club. He may have been the manager of our nemesis Gainsborough last season but he has accepted the challenge and I would like to wish him good luck. As assistant manager Darryn Stamp said last week we are free to enjoy the challenge this season because there is absolutely no pressure on us 22

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

LIAM KING LIFTS THE PLAY-OFF TROPHY

we are expected to go down. But if you know Ferriby like I do they may well surprise a few this season. The fixture list has provided some appetising away trips for Ferriby supporters. A New Year’s Day trip to York City and a final day away game at Torquay United are the stand out fixtures for me. Playing York City in the Christmas double header is very exciting and these are two games I am already looking forward to. We have some winnable home games early on in the season and if we are to have a chance of survival we need to pick up points in these games. Today we welcome Hull City for the

annual Billy Bly Trophy match. This fixture is always a great pre-season test for the Ferriby lads and this year will be no different with Ferriby’s new players looking to prove themselves against Steve Bruce’s newly promoted side. This game follows an excellent 4-1 win over Grimsby so I expect the team to play with some confidence against the Premier League outfit. It promises to be an exciting few months for the Villagers and I can’t wait for the league season to start in earnest. Enjoy the game! Sam
