THE MANAGER
CHRIS BOLDER
Welcome to the Chadwick Stadium as we take on Grantham Town. I hope everyone enjoys a great evening of football. Firstly reflecting on the Warrington Town game, we came to the conclusion that a number of contributing factors ended up with us being well beaten. The effort that the lads put in against South Shields just days before had really taken its toll, as our lads are still getting used to the intensity required at this level game after game. Both mentally and physically you could see we just weren’t quite on it. We asked for a reaction against a tough Scarborough team away from home and, in the first 45 minutes, were absolutely outstanding. The lads implemented the game plan perfectly and we were deservedly in front at the break. We knew that Scarborough would have to do something different in the second half and they did this by changing personnel and their formation. We managed to keep them out up until mid-way though the second half, but then we conceded a couple of scrappy goals. Credit must go to Scarborough for their second-half performance, but our lads once again gave their all to try and pick up the points. Saturday was a huge game for all involved and, unfortunately, we couldn’t deliver. We did our research on Dunston and nothing they did came as a surprise but, once again, we found ourselves towards the wrong end of our performance levels all over the pitch. That has been a little story of our season so far, we have been very inconsistent, which has led to mixed results and performances. The lads and the staff are desperately trying to turn this around and are pulling in the same direction remaining united with a common aim. We had an in-depth discussion after the
game about the facts, we are seeing the same issues, ones that we focus on in training and can implement time and time again. We arranged for the lads to get together on Monday in order to carry out a video analysis session which will hopefully pin point these common issues. Grantham have made a positive start to the season and have picked up some good wins. We know that they are a direct team and like to get the ball forward and utilise their size in both boxes, so we will have to stand up to this today. Obviously everyone connected to the club are disappointed with recent results, but we are all working to our maximum to turn our fortunes around. We knew that it would be a very challenging season looking at the infrastructure and finances of all other teams in the league. We have mentioned previously our lack of experience at this level and this will only be enhanced in time with this current group. We have tried a couple of systems now already this season as it is important that we can adapt if and when required, and we have had to utilise a number of players due to availability and injuries. We must start repaying the fans with some positive results as their support has been fantastic, and a special mention to those who have travelled away from home with us. Hopefully, they can see what we are trying to achieve, we have an inexperienced team who are giving their all for the club and really are desperate to be a success at this level. Hopefully this can start today! Chris Bolder First-Team Manager NORTH FERRIBY UNITED vs GRANTHAM TOWN THE OFFICIAL 2018/19 MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

THE CAPTAIN
James Piercy
A warm welcome to all North Ferriby United fans as we host Grantham Town in the Evo-Stik Premier Division
Since my last notes, results have not gone our way, but we are determined to bounce back starting this evening. Firstly the Warrington game was a very bad performance from us all, but we went into the Scarborough game on the Tuesday night and, for the first 60 minutes, we really did stifle them and they struggled to break us down. However, we ran out of steam for the last half an hour and struggled to regain a foothold in the game after Scarborough equalised. We hoped to make amends against Dunston at the weekend, but we were all very disappointed as we all knew the importance of the game. We just failed to put in a performance that we are capable of, but we will go back to the drawing board 4
and all work together to put it right come tonight. Grantham have started well and have had some good results against some strong opponents, but we now need to focus more on ourselves and our game rather than being too concerned with others results because we’ve showed when we are at it we can compete with the best in this league. We were all down after Saturday, but we are in the process now of evaluating our performance and pinpointing where we went wrong and what we need to do in future to eradicate it. All your support has been fantastic so far, we have really appreciated it so thank you. Enjoy the match tonight. James Piercy First-Team Captain

THE OPPOSITION
Grantham Town This fixture was minutes away from not being played this evening, but Michael Hollingsworth’s 93rd-minute penalty ensured Grantham Town overcame Daventry Town in the FA Cup at the weekend to ensure no replay was needed. Deep into injury time Ross Barrows burst forward towards the box and was fouled. The referee pointed to the spot with no uncertainty. After scoring from the spot in the past two matches, Hollingsworth delivered again. The travelling supporters and players joined in a mass celebration. The result caps a fine week for the club in which they have beaten both Marine and Mickleover Sports in the league, with Hollingsworth in particular impressing, netting four goals in three matches. In the league, Grantham are sitting high in sixth, with 11 points from their opening six matches, with a further victory pushing them potentially to the top of the table.

GRANTHAM TOWN
recent history Following the reorganization of nonleague football Grantham Town were moved to the Northern Premier League and finished 4th in 1984 but the following year they failed to gain re-election and returned to the Southern League. Financial problems meant the club had little success until in 1987 The board appointed Martin O’Neil as manager and promotion was missed by a point his first season and 5th spot gained the year after. Martin moved on to climb the managerial ladder at the end of that season. John Robertson returned as manager in 1990 and at this time the club left its London road home and after a year ground sharing at Spalding returned to the town into the new South Kesteven Sports Stadium. Little success was achieved until the arrival of Gary Mills as manager in 1996. Under Gary 4th place was achieved in the Southern League Midland Division in 1997 and the following year the championship was won also the club reached the quarter final of the FA trophy going out after a replay to Conference side Southport. The first game at Grantham attracted a stadium record attendance of 3695. The following year the club was taken over by Reg Brearley. Mills was replaced as manager and the club went full time but huge financial losses saw the clubs future threatened when Antrac walked away. The club was forced to enter a CVA and a difficult period followed as the club struggled to get back onto its feet. This was reflected on the pitch and when John Wilkinson arrived as manager at Christmas 2000 the club had just 9 points but following a tremendous run were finally relegated on goal difference. Promotion back to the Premier division was achieved in 2002. Following Wilkinson’s resignation Roger Ashby became manager In the summer of 2006 the club were moved from the Southern League back to the Northern Premier League. It took the club some time to adjust to the move and they were relegated 10
NORTH FERRIBY UNITED vs GRANTHAM TOWN The Official 2018/19 Matchday Programme
to Division 1 South. Wilkinson returned as boss and in 2008 lead the club to the Division 1 South play-offs where they lost 2-1 to Nantwich Following a brief spell with Phil Starbuck as manager Jim Albans and Wayne Hallcro came in as joint managers. In 2011/12 the club reached the Division 1 South play-off final losing 2-0 to Rushall Olympic but the following year they won the division by a 10 point margin. The club found life in the Premier Division difficult and following the resignation of chairman Steve Boam Albans and Hallcro also resigned. After a period under former players Gary Sucharewycz and Ian Robinson they returned and led the club to 15th spot in the Premier division. During season 2014/15 the club had to make the difficult decision to cut its playing budget when predicted income was not achieved. This resulted in several players leaving the club. Also departing was Jim Albans but his partner Wayne Hallcro stayed and recruited former Coalville manager Adam Stevens to replace Albans as joint manager and the pair set about rebuilding the side. Hallcro departed in late January to team up again with Albans at Belper Town to leave Adam Stevens in sole charge of team matters. Under Stevens the club finished 12th in the Premier Division and the following year 18th. Last season the club had its best season for many years and had a chance of reaching the playoffs right up to the final week of the season finally finishing in 8th spot. In addition they reached the league cup final going down 2-1 to Bamber Bridge. Last season the club finished in 4th spot in the premier division and went on to reach the playoff final going down 2-0 at Ashton United. Manager Adam Stevens stood down after the game and has been replaced by Ian Culverhouse for the 2018/2019 season.

The Villagers are now in the Fourth Qualifying Round for the second successive and will now be opening to progress to the First Round Proper for the first time in the club’s history.
Ferriby equalised after 24 minutes. Josh Wilde fed Liam King who cut-inside to fire a low shot past Dan Haystead. Shortly after, Tom Denton placed a header wide then he later headed against a post.
There was a definite sense of relief in the Ferriby camp at the final whistle. Grantham will feel hard done-by in a game where they offered a greater goal threat than Ferriby.

Ferriby thought they had won a penalty after just six minutes. Tom Denton was fouled, but the referee overturned his decision after spotting his assistant signalling for offside. The nearest Ferriby came to a goal was an Adam Bolder corner that drifted just wide at the far post. On 14 minutes, slack play in midfield by Ferriby allowed Alex Simmons to break through and place the ball past Adam Nicklin for the opening
King was twice denied shots on goal by last-minute tackles as the half closed. Grantham opened the secondhalf brightly, but created no opportunities. Ferriby played themselves back in to the game and Haystead saved well from King. Gregg Anderson glanced a corner wide. It was the 73rd minute before Grantham seriously threatened in the second-half. Deon Meikle hit a rebound over the bar after his shot was blocked. 11 minutes later, Anderson deflected Michael Towey’s shot for a corner which then led to a scramble at the far post, before the ball was finally cleared. Jarman’s 85th-minute winner came after Wilde fed Louis Bruce on the right and his cross was headed home from close-range. Added time saw Grantham throw everything at Ferriby in a attempt to find the equaliser, but Ferriby held firm.

After Monday’s superb performance, this was a devastating defeat for North Ferriby United. It was one of those games where too many players had an off-day. None of them could be faulted for their effort, but very little went right. Warrington Town outplayed Ferriby for periods of the game, but it was really only in the final 20 minutes when they were really on top. Warrington were generally quicker to the ball and won much of the second-ball, Ferriby struggled to hold on to the ball for any real length of time. They were often forced to clear their lines quickly and this allowed Warrington to quickly continue to pressure the Villagers. Ferriby were the first to threaten with Jamie Forrester’s shot turned around a post by goalkeeper Anthony McMillan. Warrington took the lead after 12 minutes when the unmarked Tony Gray headed home from close range from an Adam Hughes left-wing cross. The lead was doubled on 19 minutes when Richard Brodie converted a penalty following a foul on Shaun Beeley from Ben Clappison. It was perhaps a bit of a rash challenge with Beeley getting his shot off, but
NORTH FERRIBY UNITED vs GRANTHAM TOWN The Official 2018/19 Matchday Programme
the referee still awarding the penalty. McMillan had to make one save of note, a shot from Luke Lofts after 36 minutes after the midfielder had jinked his way through in to the area. Had that gone in, the game may have changed, but it was Warrington who scored the next vital goal. Dylan Vassalo broke through after 42 minutes and, with Ferriby’s defence appealing for offside, he lobbed Ferriby goalkeeper Lewis Exall. Ferriby took the game to Warrington at the start of the second-half, but they failed to create one shot on target and they rarely looked like scoring. Warrington eventually reasserted themselves. Hughes hammered a shot against the crossbar, before Warrington sealed the game with two late goals from substitutes Bohan Dixon and Josh Amis. Amis was left with a relatively simple close-range finish after 78 minutes and Dixon also scored from close range with Ferriby’s defence again all over the place. Ferriby never gave up, but they struggled to make any kind of impression against an experienced Warrington team. As much as anything, they received a lesson in finishing.

North Ferriby United produced a much better performance against the much-fancied Scarborough Athletic than they did against Warrington on Saturday. Unfortunately, despite deservedly leading at half-time, the Villagers finally succumbed to a 3-1 defeat. Ferriby had the better of the first-half in a fairly end-to-end contest. The Villagers opened brightly with Luke Hinsley having a shot blocked as early as the fourth minute. Hinsley fired narrowly over shortly afterwards following good work by Luke Lofts. The goal threat was all Ferriby’s and they took the lead after 16 minutes. Hinsley burst into the penalty area on the left and was brought down by home goalkeeper Tommy Taylor. Lofts calmly slotted the penalty home, sending Taylor the wrong way. Ferriby’s midfield and defence were continually pressing Scarborough. The Seadogs were forced into errors and playing back towards their own goal for much of the half. It took until the 25th minute for them to even come close to a goal with Nathan Valentine heading a free-kick wide. Lewis Exall had to come quickly off his line to clear from Michael Coulson as he broke through. The ball reached Lofts and his effort from 40 yards with Taylor off his line went narrowly wide. Scarborough were getting increasingly frustrated, but Coulson did force Exall into one good save after the 38th minute. On the stroke of half-time, James Walshaw saw a header drop just over the cross bar,
though Exall had it covered. The second-half saw Scarborough change their tactics and they dominated the half. Ferriby rarely got the ball out of their own half. Clearances out of defence reached the halfway line where they were met by Scarborough’s back four, who were then able to launch yet another attack. James Cadman and former Ferriby player Wayne Brooksby were a constant threat out wide and Walshaw and Coulson caused problems up front. However, despite their pressure, Scarborough still found it difficult to create goal-scoring chances. Even so, it seemed like it would only be a matter of time before the pressure got its reward and Scarborough finally equalised after 67 minutes. Exall did well to parry a shot, but the ball fell to Kevin Burgess who rammed the ball home. Ferriby’s first goal attempt of the half came just after the equaliser when Dan Norton shot across the goal. Scarborough’s second goal contained an element of good fortune. Lacey’s rather wayward shot reached Brooksby who hit a low shot just inside the post. Ferriby were still working hard, but the intensity of their firsthalf display was always going to be difficult to continue for a full 90 minutes, especially against a side as good as Scarborough. Credit to Ferriby, though, because it was only in added time that Brooksby scored the clinching goal when a crossfield allowed him to run on and shoot past the advancing Exall.

Sports Traider Charity, Registered Charity No. 1156175
Youth-focused charity offering young people the kit and support they need to discover and fulfil their sporting ambition and potential.
Sports Traider has established the first chain of charity retail shops in the UK that specialise in sports kit and equipment. The aim is to make clothing and sport equipment affordable to all, and at the same time generate a sustainable source of funding to help disadvantaged young people participate in sport. Each year Sports Traider Charity organises a number of events to engage with the sporting community to raise funds and awareness of the charity. The charity is heavily reliant upon donations, both cash and equipment, from the goodwill of members of the public, and corporate businesses. These are received through UK Virgin Money Giving,
collections, Direct Debit, Standing Order, and through corporate and individual membership of our ‘100 Club’. Every contribution is most welcome and makes a difference within the donors’ local community.
