THE MANAGER

CHRIS BOLDER

Welcome to the Chadwick Stadium as we take on Whitby Town. I hope everyone enjoys a great afternoon of football. Well here we are back at the start of another season with North Ferriby United. We are pleased with how pre-season has gone on the whole, we have managed to retain a large proportion of the squad that finished the season and we have also managed to add some other local talent, too. The lads have applied themselves really well to everything that has been asked of them both in training and during the matches. We have had a mixed set of results, but that is usually the case in pre-season as you are tinkering with lots of aspects and trying different players in different systems and positions. The objective of achieving appropriate fitness levels for all of the squad members has been achieved and we have managed to generate an excellent team spirit and togetherness of all of the lads which will, hopefully, help us in difficult situations. With regards to aims for the upcoming season, the main target for the club is to halt the recent slide and consolidate ourselves back again at this level. We must, therefore, approach things on a game-by-game basis, but of course we are no different to anyone else and want to win as many football matches as possible. We know we will be up against it at times, as most teams are well established clubs with vast

numbers of experienced players at this level and above. We must, therefore, ensure that we control as many of the controlables in a game of football in order to give ourselves every opportunity, with the experience being gained along the way. Today we host Whitby Town who are one of these clubs who have a great history at nonleague level and have added some excellent players to their retained list from last season. We know they have managed to raise funds in order to add players to their squad as well as adding some quality players, who have recently plied their trade at a higher level. The support we received towards the back end of the season was fantastic in very difficult circumstances and the home games in preseason have continued our trend of having great supporters. We hope we can bring some exciting football with young talented local lads showing their qualities and hopefully we will continue to add to our fan base which, in turn, will help the club both on and off the field. Thank you for your support and I hope we can deliver positive results on the pitch starting this afternoon. THE CAPTAIN

James Piercy

A warm welcome to all North Ferriby United fans as we host Whitby Town in the Evo-Stik Premier Division this afternoon

Here we are our first home game of the Evo-Stik Premier League Division against Whitby Town. Pre-season has gone great, we have kept a large chunk of the players who ended last season which was a positive and also every player that’s joined during pre-season has bought into the gaffers ideas and team ethics. The squad is shaping up very nicely now and we have a lot of strong competition for places within the camp. Competition only brings out the best in each and every one of us and it is making sure we are all working harder during training sessions and out on the pitch in order to get the nod for the start of the season. In terms of targets for the upcoming season, the general consensus in and around the camp is that we can shock a few teams this campaign. We have been tipped as second favourites for relegation which the gaffer has told us all about and it gives us all that extra incentive to go out and prove people wrong and all the lads are confident that we can do so. It was a huge honour to be named captain and it was certainly something that I was not expecting. But yes it’s a huge honour for me personally 4

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED vs WHITBY TOWN The Official 2018/19 Matchday Programme

and I hope to do my best for this club and justify the gaffers’ decision to give me the captaincy for the forthcoming season and lead this team to many achievements and successes in the coming season. In terms of personal aims, I just want to continue to prove myself at this level. Last season was a big jump up for me from the Ncel Premier Division into the Conference North and now again this is a completely new level to me, so I just want to continue to prove myself and work hard to get better each and every week. Looking at the fixtures, to be honest I’m looking forward to every game equally, but if I had to pick two it would be Scarborough and South Shields. There will be a very good atmosphere at both of those fixtures and it’s always good to play in front of a decent crowd. For the fans this season, I would just like to ask that you get behind the team in each and every game and, hopefully, we can return the favour this season and give you a lot more positive results that you can be proud of and make you proud to support this club once again. THE OPPOSITION

whitby town Whitby Town make the trip to East Yorkshire to the Chadwick Stadium hoping to make it back-toback victories. The Seasiders hosted Buxton in their season opener at the weekend and prevailed with a 1-0 victory after Adam Gell’s 24th-minute goal. Gell, who departed in the middle of last season, returned to the club from Northern League side Shildon for an undisclosed fee, immediately repaid the faith shown by manager Chris Hardy. Buxton were reduced to 10 men in the second half when Bradley Roscoe was shown a straight red card, but Whitby will hope their opening-day win can provide the momentum against North Ferriby. Prior to the match Hardy bolster his squad with the arrival of five new players. Former Middlesbrough midfielder Cameron Park returned to the club after a spell out of the game, while Cam Wilson penned a deal after netting in the Blues’ opening pre-season game against Billingham Town. The duo are joined by former Guisborough Town defender Paul Roddam and V9 Academy product Kieron Parnaby, who was last in action for Sunderland RCA. Finally, striker Carl Lawson signed forms to provide back-up to an exciting strike force

THE VISITORS

WHITBY TOWN

recent history Season 2003/04 saw another excellent cup run halted at the hands of Hartlepool United. The blues put up a spirited show at Victoria Park, but fell 4-0 to an excellent Pools side. Whitby also managed to finish in the play-off zone for the new Conference North, but went out on penalties to Radcliffe Borough, a team they had beaten 5-0, 6-2 and 1-0, in the regular season. Long time manager Harry Dunn was replaced by Dave Logan early in season 2004/05 after a string of poor performances. The former Blues stalwart turned the side around as they equalled a club record 19 games without defeat and in the process made the UniBond League promotion play-offs. They lost in the semi-final to Farsley Celtic after extra time. Town also reached the final of the UniBond Challenge Cup, but lost in extra time to Matlock Town. Since Logan left at the end of season 2005/06, former Reading and Wales striker Lee Nogan spent two seasons at the Turnbull, finishing 13th and leaving in October 2007, after FA Trophy defeat at Ossett Town. Phil Brumwell guided the team to safety, with Nogan showing notable class by returning to the club as a player. Brumwell was joined by and eventually succeeded by ex-Blyth Spartans assistant Graham Clarke in summer 2009. Town would’ve been relegated for the first time in their history, at the end of that season, if not for victories over Witton Albion and title-chasing Ilkeston Town on the final day, plus Cammell Laird’s demotion for ground issues. The following season saw Dunn succeed Clarke for a second spell, but after a mid-table finish, resigned in September 2010, claiming he’d taken the Blues as far as he could. Ex-Newcastle United and Northern Ireland midfielder Tommy Cassidy replaced Dunn, lasting almost a year exactly, before leaving by mutual consent in October 2011. Ironically, it was a man with strong 10

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED vs WHITBY TOWN The Official 2018/19 Matchday Programme

Sunderland connections who took over from the former Magpie. Darren Williams, who made 200 appearances for the Wearsiders, was given his first managerial job, despite having joined just weeks earlier, as a player. Williams famously secured Town’s third last-day escape in five seasons, at Buxton, amid joyous scenes. After more than four years at the helm, the popular Williams and assistant Dave Campbell, were replaced by ex-Guisborough Town boss Chris Hardy, assisted by Lee Bullock, in December 2015. Hardy brought a new footballing ethos to the Turnbull Ground, one that he implemented with his former club Guisborough Town. In his first-half season, Hardy steered the club aware from relegation danger, before getting to work on his plan to guide the Blues to the Conference North. He brought in a number of talented young players from his former club, Guisborough Town, and set about putting together a side that would consolidate their place in the Evo-Stik Premier, first and foremost, before going on to challenge for silverware. The Blues, in the end, blitzed those expectations. A successful season, that saw Whitby spearhead the Evo-Stik Premier table for a good three months, saw the Seasiders eventually tail off in the league, finishing sixth, just two points outside the play-offs. Cup success was to follow as planned, however. A fantastic run in the North Riding Senior Cup saw Guisborough Town, York City and Middlesbrough all fall to Hardy’s side, before a final showdown Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium with Pickering Town. Whitby were forced to come from behind, after a stunning Nick Thompson strike, but duly obliged, with Dale Hopson equalising just after the break, before Mikey Roberts added two goals in quick succession to ensure a 3-1 win and a sixth North Riding Senior Cup success.

North Ferriby United gave a strong performance against a determined Whitby Town side desperate for points to avoid relegation.

Bradshaw almost made it two just before half-time, but Liversedge did well to make a low diving save to turn Bradshaw’s shot for a corner.

Whitby had more of the possession in the first 15 minutes, but created no clear chances.

Ferriby began to play themselves in to the game and their passing proved difficult for Whitby to deal with.

Whitby did manage to exert occasional pressure with Jeff Smith prominent in many of their attacks. However, they were unable to seriously trouble the Ferriby defence.

The first major chance came after 26 minutes. Dean Lisles’ cross found Gary Bradshaw at the far post, but the striker’s chipped effort was held by Whitby’s goalkeeper Nicholas Liversedge. Eight minutes later, a surging run from his own half by Gregg Anderson ended with Liversedge just managing to kick the ball clear. The only goal of the match came after 36 minutes. Lee Morris squared the ball, before Bradshaw stepped over it to let it run to Wayne Brooksby who fired home from 10 yards.

The second half saw Whitby attack the home defence. First Smith’s 20-yard free-kick flew narrowly over, before Russell Fry had to clear for a corner then Adam Nicklin saved from Smith. Whitby continued to press, but the closest they came was when Danny Clarke headed off the Ferriby goal-line deep in to time added-on. In between, Liversedge made another superb diving save to deny Bradshaw. Lee Morris and Brooksby both had shots saved. Ferriby deserved their win which leaves Whitby deep in the relegation dog-fight.

North Ferriby United gained a good and well deserved point at Marine after a 1-1 draw. The result is even more creditable because The Villagers finished with 10-men following the 78th minute dismissal of Dan Norton for a second-yellow card. It was Ferriby who had the first opportunity after nine minutes. Norton was fouled just inside the area, but Jamie Forrester’s penalty was well saved by home goalkeeper Martin Fearon diving to his left. Two minutes later, Fearon denied Forrester again when he parried his 25-yard drive. The game was not exactly end-to-end, but both sides had their little periods of pressure. From one attack, Marine were awarded a penalty. This time it was Lewis Exall’s chance to save when he went to his left to deny Danny Mitchley. Luke Lofts was enjoying a good performance in midfield and he shot narrowly wide after 28 minutes, before putting in a cross that Norton put wide. Tony Donaldson was a threat in midfield for Marine, partly because he was often given too much space. Given the lack of opportunities from either side, it was a bit of a surprise when Ferriby took the lead after 42 minutes. Lofts made a short run, before firing

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED vs WHITBY TOWN The Official 2018/19 Matchday Programme

home a low shot just inside the right-hand post. On the balance of chances, Ferriby deserved their half-time lead. Marine went up a gear in the second-half, but it was Norton who almost scored the first goal of the second half with a shot at Fearon. Marine gradually began to take a degree of control, but still managed little more than halfchances. Donaldson continued to be at the heart of many of their attacks as they pushed. Perhaps the pivotal moment of the game came after 78 minutes. Norton burst in to the area and was challenged as he was about to shoot. Ferriby players thought it was a clear penalty, but the referee thought otherwise and cautioned Norton for simulation. Unfortunately it was Norton’s second caution so he was dismissed. As often happens in these situations, the free-kick led to Marine’s goal. They moved the ball forward and Josh Hine’s cross was met first-time by Craig Carney who hammered home from 10 yards. Exall had no chance. Marine flung everything at Ferriby after that as they looked for a winner. However, Mail, Piercey and Exall were tremendous in the centre of the defence. Ferriby threatened very little in the second-half, but held on for a valuable point.
