WHO WAS

Billy bly?

For many North Ferriby United fans the annual Billy Bly memorial trophy match is a chance to see some of Hull City’s stars, but who was he? Billy Bly was born on 15th May, 1920 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He made his debut for Hull City in April 1939 in a 2-0 win against Rotherham. During the war, Bly guested for Dumbarton and Hamilton Academicals between 1942 and 1943. His career started in earnest in August 1946 when he played for Hull City against Lincoln City. He remained the Tigers’ first-choice keeper until his retirement in 1960. He was reputed to be the most injured footballer in the game at that time and missed a total of roughly six years through a multiplicity of injuries, including 14 fractures. Despite that, he still made 456 first-team appearances for City. City’s on-field fortunes seemed to follow

the ebb and flow of Bly’s injuries. In those seasons when he played a high number of games the side did well. Conversely, when he was out of the side for lengthy spells they struggled. Bly was a star in the Club’s famous 1949 FA Cup run. The Tigers faced Manchester United at Boothferry Park. Bly suffered a broken nose, was concussed, but played on. Two years after retiring, he was persuaded to have a short spell with Weymouth. He eventually came to North Ferriby United as a coach a committee member. Billy Bly’s contribution to both clubs is remembered in the annual pre-season Billy Bly Memorial Trophy fixture between Hull City and North Ferriby. It is a fitting tribute to a man who gave to both clubs.

LAST MEETING North Ferriby United deservedly won the Billy Bly Memorial Trophy due to an impressive second-half display against a youthful Hull City side. City had the majority of the possession during the first-half, but found it difficult to get past Ferriby’s midfield and defence. The visitors were often forced to play backwards, despite Will Annan and Jacob Greaves largely controlling the midfield. City went close in the first minute with Ahmed Salam firing narrowly wide. The Villagers responded with Curtis Bateson and skipper Simon Russell both going close. Russell was impressive throughout the game with his running, tackling and distribution, it was hard to believe that he has had over seven months out of the game through injury. Ferriby were creating more chances and duly opened the scoring after 29 minutes. Mark Gray’s powerful defensive header found Joe Pugh, who powered his way down the right, before crossing to Joel Ambalu who fired home. City responded with a Jacob Greaves shot that hit the underside of the cross bar and

bounced away, while Russ Fry saw a header cleared off the City line by Salam for the hosts. City equalised after 42 minutes, when Ross Durrant made a superb double save, but the ball bounced to Elliott Holmes, who managed to find the back of the net. City made a number of changes at half-time and the side was not as effective as in the first-half. That saw Ferriby largely dominate, despite also making a number of changes themselves as the half wenton. Ferriby went close on a number of occasions as they continually pressed City back. Harrison Foulkes did well to come out to take the ball off Pugh’s toes and Alberto dragged a header across goal. The Villagers regained the lead after 77 minutes when Danny Emerton hit home after a save from Foulkes was not cleared. Three minutes later, Alberto clinched the win with a nice finish. Emerton played Alberto in and the striker coolly slid the ball past Foulkes. Jake Skelton cleared a Billy Chadwick shot off the line with five minutes, but it was too little too late as far as City were concerned and Ferriby ran out comfortable winners.
