THE CHAIRMAN <

PAUL BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, management and players and, most importantly, both the supporters of Sittingbourne FC, as well as any Millwall or Dartford supporters here. A very warm welcome and we hope you join us again. We welcome you to our new home Princes Park our home for the next four years, and you all have a safe journey home after the match. We are pleased you can all join us on a day very special to all those involved with the club. You will have read recently we lost one of the club’s elder statesmen Peter Tierney, many words have been said about Peter and I am sure there will be a lot more said of him within this matchday programme. But today, specifically at this match, we are remembering the life of Peter Tierney, Peter was one of our vice presidents and one of the founders of this great club all those years ago. We are joined today by his widow Pat and a number of his family, so I welcome you all to Princes Park when we are celebrating Peter’s life. I will never forget holding conversations with him either in the bar or at pitch side during a match, whether it be about the

PAGE 04

opposition or our own team. I personally joined the club in 2012 and I had the opportunity to get to know Peter more closely, Peter was certainly one of my critics initially, but when I explained the reasons for my actions he understood why I was doing things. None were for my personal benefit, but to ensure the future of the club. He knew that, without me bankrolling the club, the club would die, it has such a small fan base, therefore, there was no revenue coming through the gate. We had many a deep discussions about the running of the club and one of the last things he said to me was: “Paul if you decide to leave the club, he and the other elder statesmen would totally understand my reasoning, so you make whatever decision you feel is correct for you and your family, as you have given me a number of years of being able to watch and support my beloved team something that would not be possible without you, Paul.” While I was the owner of Maidstone United FC, I had many a match-day encounter with

THAMESMEAD TOWN VS SITTINGBOURNE

the club (TTFC) and I will always remember the great hospitality TTFC supplied to the visiting opposition and I cannot forget the great display of homemade cakes duly made by Peter’s wife Pat (who still very kindly continues to supply our boardroom at Princes Park with these wonderful cakes) I also remember moving into our brand new stadium at Bayliss Avenue, even then, Peter would be seen either putting up or taking down the nets, selling programmes at the turnstiles, standing guard at the top of the stairs ensuring everyone duly paid. And during the game you would see Peter going through the fence gates to retrieve match-day balls kicked over the fence. In my opinion he was a true club volunteer, something that is getting harder to find these days and this is the reason we are celebrating Peter’s life and involvement with this fine old club today. When we moved to Princes Park he reverted to his new role within our boardroom welcoming our opposition, visiting officials or distributing the team-sheets once

> THE CHAIRMAN

I had printed them. There was not a job too big or small for Peter to put his hand too. Today I am saying a personal thank you to you Peter, you will always be part of my memories while I am involved with this club. I will personally miss you and I thank you for everything you did for the club. I would like to welcome all those supporters new and old that have decided to support Thamesmead Town this coming season. As you will have read, I have negotiated a partnership with Millwall Supporters Association that allows their members to join us as a Mead Card holder at all of our home matches. They will to join our friends from Dartford who, since our move to Princes Park, have joined us in great numbers, so I hope this season we will see a rise in gate numbers because as I have said many times the supporters they act as a 12th man.

My main consideration this season is to gain higher gates, not for the money through the turnstiles, but to give the players supporters to play in front of. I believe we will not benefit from playing at Princes Park until we have more supporters around the ground and I hope that our friends from Millwall & Dartford assist us in this quest. As you will have heard we have now a new under-23 team in operation and they won their first match 3-0 as well as four young teams playing in the Kent League. This is the start of the initiative of making this club a real football club rather than a one team side as we have been since we left Bayliss Avenue, hopefully with the continued support from Welling Youth FC we will have a large contingency of youth teams joining us next season making us a real community club, so watch this space.

Finally, I was advised by those around me, that we were not marketing the football club correctly whether it be by social media or on our website. I therefore bought a young professional lady into the club named Sonya and, with her team of volunteers, they will attempt to rectify this void. I hope very shortly we will have a brand new website in operation together with active social media streams. I am told that we are getting over 1500 hits (whatever that means) and its estimated this will rise to over 5000 once we are fully operational, so please all look at the social media and be involved in your own club. I wish all of you a very enjoyable season whoever you may support. Paul Bowden-Brown Director and Owner

THE MANAGER <

TOMMY WARRILOW May I welcome the officials, team and supporters of Sittingbourne this Saturday afternoon and, after an enjoyable afternoon, they all have a safe journey home. Good afternoon everyone and I’d like to welcome everyone connected with Sittingbourne Football Club to Princes Park today. We go into today’s game after a really frustrating start to the season both on and off the pitch. On the pitch, we should really have got something out of the game on Monday and as well as in our last home game against Faversham Town. Both games were affected undoubtedly by the amount of injuries that we’re carrying already – I think it was six or seven against Faversham and still five against Phoenix! In the first half, against Phoenix, we played some pretty good stuff, while in the second it became more of a battle and a rugged performance from both sides.

PAGE 06

Losing key players means that I still haven’t been able to put out the side that I’ve wanted to since half way through pre-season. It’s caused a bit of disruption and I suppose that it’s only natural that it would cause some disruption to our plans. The bottom line is that we’ve had five games (two in cup competitions and three in the league) and as we’ve nothing on the table, it shows that we should have had something. Then again, it’s not a blame culture and we’ve just got to address things and get on with it. As I said last year, it’s great when everything is going well at a football club, but there’s no point in feeling sorry for yourselves when they don’t. Anyone looking at our list of

THAMESMEAD TOWN VS SITTINGBOURNE

injuries will see that we are going to struggle even if though I do think – even if it had been “just” a couple of draws on the table. We’ve got to get on with it and today, hand on heart, I really don’t know who will be back. We’re still missing John Coker, Tom O’Connor, Danny Parish and Chigoze – the longer it goes on the more chance that we’ve got of getting these boys back, but it’s just a time thing. So, I’m hoping that we’ll have some good news for everyone this afternoon! If not, we can’t afford to rush them back as we’ve got to be sensible and push on being as positive as we can. Sittingbourne have had a good start and I’m sure will be a very organised and quick side as they always are.

> THE MANAGER

There’re no easy teams in this league and I’m not expecting anything else today and we’ll go again knowing that. We’re off on our travels again in the FA Cup next week and another long journey down to Portsmouth after the positive result that we got last weekend against Balham. Balham were an unbeaten side from the league below, so to go there and keep a clean sheet and in my opinion we should have won by more bodes well. Hopefully, if we can do the same against Moneyfields and

as everyone knows, it’s just important to win the game and secure the prize money.

and the others who had stood with the club through thick and thin.

We all want the money and that will be what we’ll be focused on next Saturday.

I was devastated when I heard the news that Peter had passed away in the summer.

Today of course we’re honouring a man who many have named “Mr Thamesmead” who we sadly lost during the summer.

It was always a pleasure to speak to him – along with Albert and Alan after games in the bar, when they came in for a chat. It’s a great loss to all of us and we’ll all miss a very nice man!

I first met Peter at a terrible time for the club as we were being mistreated in our former home and we were moving to a new location. It was obviously hard for Peter,

Enjoy today and I hope to see you after in the bar. Tommy Warillow First-Team Manager

> THE PHYSIO

THE PHYSIO Good afternoon everyone and welcome to my column for the season as we look at the injury table and those who have recently recovered from knocks. The treatment room has been a busy place, especially with two games in three days over the Bank Holiday weekend and with the small squad that we have at the moment. To sum up where we are now; Chigs (Chigoze Agwuegbo) is in the late stages of his rehab from ankle ligament damage – I’m hoping that he’ll be back in a

couple of weeks I’m hoping that we’ll finally see John (Coker) in Mead very colours soon – so watch this space. We’re waiting on news from Tom (O’Connor) and hopefully we’ll have news next time… On the plus side, Williams (Danquah) came back from a hamstring injury on Bank Holiday Monday after being out for a couple of weeks. Hopefully, everyone came through the games at the weekend – we’ll keep a close eye on the boys at

training this week and fingers crossed for today. Before I go, I’d just like to add my tribute to Peter. He was an absolute gentleman and always had a huge smile on his face. I’ve never heard a bad word said about him in all my time at the club, and his happy smiling face will be missed by us all. Carly Payne First-Team Physio

mead matters PETER’S TRIBUTE Club chairman PAUL BOWDEN BROWN will lead our tributes to PETER TIERNEY this afternoon, when he will lay flowers in the centre circle shortly before kick-off. Both teams will then show their respects with a minute’s applause in which we invite all those present today to join in with. The family will then be presented with a ball autographed by the Mead’s first-team squad, before joining the Chairman in the director’s box for this afternoon’s game.

WELCOME ROOKY We’d like to extend a belated Mead welcome to CARL ROOK who has once again signed for the Gaffer after an extremely successful spell when they were both at Tonbridge Angels. Rooky last year featured for Faversham Town at the back or either up front where he made his name as one of the hottest strikers in Kent football.

MEAD CARDS Don’t forget application forms are still available for you to get yours – for details see elsewhere in today’s programme and get your form from Princes Park reception, Champions Bar or from the Mead Suite on a match day.

> THE GM

THE GM Good afternoon and good luck to Tom and the team today. It has been a very tough offseason this year and, with my General Managers’ hat on, both the Chairman and I have been working tirelessly in trying to bring much-needed revenue into the club. This is an ongoing process and, if anyone out there is willing to work on a commission-fee basis, then please come and see me, your help will be much appreciated. On a plus side, I was delighted to see the partnership with Louis Deans Welling Youth move forward and it’s good to see the name of Thamesmead Town Football Club being involved once again with the Kent Youth League. I wish all the teams the best of the luck for this coming season and please go and support the lads if you get a chance. It was great to see our development team beat a strong Burgess Hill last week and reports say we have good young players who can’t wait to push themselves into the first-team set-up. By training alongside the firstteam squad, it allows them to see just how the senior team train and the dedication needed to succeed. It will be interesting to see how many of them can push themselves into Tom’s squad this

season or obtain a request to go along to first-team pre-season training next year. I wish them the best in their young careers. Even though we are currently playing outside of Thamesmead, we have not forgotten the young children within the area and want them to realise that Sporting Club Thamesmead is not the only club that has deep roots in the community. Last week we signed an agreement with FRB coaching to put on school sessions, afterschool clubs and holiday courses under the club’s umbrella. They will still keep their own identity and continue with their own successful sessions, but will coach under our banner within a selected postcode area. Please find them on social media channels and look out for the Thamesmead Town courses. Everyone connected with Thamesmead Town Football Club and those that once were, were deeply saddened when hearing of Vice President Peter Tierney’s passing. Everyone knew that Peter was unwell, but it was and still is, a great shock. I met Peter when I was invited to join Thamesmead by our current chairman, Paul Bowden Brown and I will be honest, Peter and I didn’t get off to a great start. Peter had been involved with the club for a tremendously long

time, 47 years to be precise, and here was this new guy coming in with new ideas, saying change was needed. Peter was a man of stability and didn’t like change and we voiced our difference of opinions on many occasions, but it was never via heated discussions, but always civil over a cup of tea and a slice of his wife’s mouth-watering cake, I still maintain its the cake that helped me put on three stone!! It was worth every bite though. As the seasons passed, Pete, Alan and Albert would come across and ask for my opinion on the match and it was something I looked forward to. There was a mutual respect and Pete would remind me of my late father, who was instrumental in setting up a club from scratch and seeing it flourish. Peter carried out his matchday duties diligently, but always unassumingly and was always the first to offer help or to shake the hand of an away teams official. He was a credit to the club and will be sorely, sorley missed. While honouring Peter’s life and attending his funeral, to see just how many people were there to pay their own respects just shows you the measure and high esteem, Peter was held in. INTRODUCING

SITTINGBOURNE When Aslan Olav took over from Nick Davis last season at Woodstock Park, it was a question in many places of “Aslan Who?” But Sittingbourne’s new boss answered those questions in some degree of style and as they arrive at Princes Park on this first day of September, they sit seventh in the league, with two wins in their opening three games of 2018/2019 and are safely into the First Qualifying Round of the Emirates FA Cup.

We could well be in for another titanic Kent derby this afternoon as both games last year finished as 2-2 draws, with the game here at Princes Park being our first Sunday fixtures with the Brickies equalising deep into stoppage time to earn a deserved share of the spoils. All in all, we’re surely in for an intriguing early season derby as both sides look to recover from Bank Holiday Monday defeats to Phoenix Sports and Cray Wanderers respectively.

THAMESMEAD TOWN VS SITTINGBOURNE

> THE OPPOSITION

RECENT CLUB HISTORY The club was started as Sittingbourne United back in 1881. In 1886 it became Sittingbourne Football Club and played at the Bull Ground in the centre of town. 1892 the club gained senior status. The club won its first major title in 1897/98 when it won the Kent League. The Kent Senior Cup followed in 1902 After the First World War more senior cup and league titles followed with the club also enjoying the first of three spells in the Southern League. Success followed and in another spell in the Southern League Sittingbourne twice in succession missed promotion to the Premier Division only on goal average. The club reached the first-round proper of the F.A Cup in 1962 but lost 3-0 at Hinckley Athletic Back in the Kent League Sittingbourne were one of the strongest teams throughout the 1970s and 1980s in an era - unlike the one that followed, when what happened on the field got more attention than what went on off it! In February 1990, the club decided to sell its town centre Bull Ground (now Sainsbury’s supermarket) and buy a 23-acre site on the town’s Eurolink estate. A magnificent stadium with a 2,000 seater stand, restaurants, bars, sumptuous dressing rooms, greyhound track and training pitches was the envy of non-league football. There was success too, on the pitch when, in their first season at Central Park, Sittingbourne won the Winstonlead Kent League

without losing a game - the only senior football team throughout Europe to achieve that feat in the 1990/91 season. Promotion to the Beazer Homes Southern League followed with the championship of the Southern Division secured in 1993 followed by promotion to highest level achieved by the club since it’s foundation in 1891. The ground record was broken five times during that one season with 5,951 spectators watching a friendly with Spurs and more than 3,000 at the match with local rivals Gravesend - a Beazer Homes Southern Division record. More money flowed in with the £21,000 sale of Neil Emblen and Mickey Harle to MilIwall before the bubble spectacularly burst. Debts of more than £1 million were revealed, the team got relegated, the ground was closed for a while despite the intervention of the local council in taking it over, and the club was officially wound up. Somehow Sittingbourne have survived it all and even got back to the Southern Premier Division during this traumatic time (in Steve Lovell’s first spell as manager), finishing an equal highest ever eighth before the financial problems again began to bite and relegation followed .A new management committee headed by Andy Spice made great strides in tackling the debt problem and getting Sittingbourne Football Club back on an even keel financially. To ensure survival of the club, the decision was made to move out of the imposing main stadium

and move to another pitch on the complex. Because of the FA reorganising the leagues Sittingbourne faced a brand new challenge playing a number of “unknown” teams in the Ryman Isthmian League for season 2006-2007. The 2009-10 season, was one of the best since the financial problems, Sittingbourne being in play off contention for much of the time but failing at the end. Still, a 9th place finish was no disgrace and for the first time in fifty years, Sittingbourne won the Kent Senior Cup in front of 618 at Folkestone Invicta. For the 2013-2014 season, Sittingbourne decided to leave their home of 10 years and accept an invitation to move to Woodstock Park a 14-acre area with superb social facilities. Andy Spice, who almost single handedly kept Sittingbourne as a senior club, stood down as Chairman making way for Maurice Dunk, a Director of the company that holds the leasehold for Woodstock Park. After a three year reign as manager, Nick Davis resigned along with his Assistant manager, Tony Cornwell, in February 2018 after the committee decided a budget cut was necessary when it became clear that Sittingbourne would be unlikely to challenge for the play offs. Coach, Aslan Odev, was given the task of preparing Sittingbourne for the challenges that the 2018-2019season will bring. Aslan appointed ex Brickie, Ian Varley as his Assistant manager.

> A TRIBUTE TO PETER TIERNEY

A TRIBUTE TO PETER TIERNEY Throughout today’s programme we are paying tribute to Club Vice President and legend PETER TIERNEY. You’ll read a series of tributes to Peter who was a true gentleman and will be terribly missed by us all. First to pay her own tribute is Peter’s daughter ERIKA… “My Dad has been involved with TTFC all my life. He was a manager of one of the youth teams which my brother Gary played in. This involved all of the family for all of my childhood.

drinking a pint of lager as he couldn’t watch the penalty shoot-out. This he was known for and always caused lots of laughs within the club.

“I remember running into the pitch with the oranges at half-time for years & years.

“Another highlight was our trip to Guernsey in the FA Cup – the first time and so far, only time a cup tie has been played in the Channel Islands. It was a lovely day, which I will cherish now for the rest of my life.

“In recent years, I followed the senior side with Dad going home and away. “I’ve also sponsored the man-of-the-match award, where my daughter Charlotte would present a bottle of wine to the player of the day! “The most special memory was when TTFC got promoted to the Ryman Premier League – as you’ll hear from others, Dad was in the clubhouse

“He loved TTFC and TTFC loved him, this has made me immensely proud to be his daughter.”

A TRIBUTE TO PETER TIERNEY <

A TRIBUTE TO PETER TIERNEY We needed a special tribute to fill the middle pages and mean talking to someone at the Football Club who knew Peter the best. That task fell to Club President ALBERT PANTING and we’re sure you’ll agree, Albert has done Peter, all of us and himself proud… “I first met Peter early in 1971 when a meeting had been called to form an adult football team in Thamesmead. As we had only moved there a couple of months earlier, I went to the meeting with some trepidation, not knowing anyone. But it was definitely one of the best decisions I have ever made. “Peter and I, along with our families, soon became close and we have shared many holidays and family functions together. That closeness has lasted to this day; has never changed and today we are as close as we have ever been! “Peter was a listener and with me as a friend he had a lot of listening to do. On PAGE 20

the other hand, he was the opposite and rarely off loaded any issues he had. He was a quiet man who didn’t have a bad word to say about anyone. I don’t recall us ever having arguments, although we did disagree over things, particularly football, but he was, along with Pat, always

THAMESMEAD TOWN VS SITTINGBOURNE

there for me whenever things weren’t going as well as they could have. “Peter was a very good footballer and started playing for our first team at right back in those early years and could hold his own at a very good level.

> A TRIBUTE TO PETER TIERNEY

As time moved on and our footballing days were over, we both became involved in the junior side of the club and took on the role of managers. “Peter ran a side from around the age of 10 and his team was consistently one of the best around for a number of years, not only locally, but they could hold their own with the best sides in London some of who are here today! “When we became a senior club in the late 1980’s, we both were more involved with the seniors and it was around this time that Peter came into his own at Thamesmead to become

what I would call the ‘Face of the Club.’ “Peter would do anything for the football club and has done so much for TTFC you can’t imagine. But ask him to take on the responsibility of being a secretary, chairman or treasurer and he would flatly refuse. That wasn’t him. “He excelled at welcoming everyone to the club – be they opposing directors or players; county or league officials; parents, and spectators alike, he would be the one who would introduce himself and welcome to our club. He spoke to everyone, could remember all their names and was the first person that

they would look for. And if he wasn’t there, they’d always ask where he was. “Sadly, Peter and I were the only founder members of the club left and it’s going to be very difficult to go and watch TTFC without him being there and it is something none of us is looking forward to. “ What a big hole he leaves in our lives. I don’t know how we will cope without Peter around and I cannot begin to comprehend what life will be without him. “The Club will never be the same again. I will miss him terribly. All our love – RIP old friend.”

> CLUB HISTORY

CLUB HISTORY

Thamesmead F.C. was formed in 1969 as a community team for local youngsters. The club merged with Southlake FC in 1973, and by 1979 were fielding a Saturday team, playing on local park pitches. In 1980 the club entered the London Spartan League at the Intermediate Division Three level and dominated the divisions in the early 80s, but were couldn’t gain promotion to the Senior Division until they gained senior status. In 1985, the club changed its name to Thamesmead Town FC, and later that year they relocated to Bayliss Avenue, before finally gaining senior status during the summer of 1987 and were accepted into the London Spartan League Premier Division. The club moved to the Kent League in June 1990, where they remained until 2008, generally finishing amongst the top half dozen in the table. In 2002–03, the club missed the runner-up spot on goal difference, despite bizarrely having more points than Cray Wanderers, who won the League! Keith McMahon took the helm in the summer of 2006 and this would be the beginning of a new successful era for Thamesmead. In 2007–08, Thamesmead Town were champions of the Kent League, winning the title on the last day of the season. The title ensured promotion to the Isthmian League, where they were elected to play in Division One North in 2008–09. The summer of 2009 saw work begin to give Bayliss Avenue a massive transformation as work began on “Sportsman Club Thamesmead” The Project aimed to deliver first class facilities for the local community as well as a stadium suitable for Conference South which

Thamesmead town was hoped to be completed for the start of the 2010/11 season. However, delays ensured and it was at this time around September 2012 that former Maidstone United Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown became involved in the club as a director, with the main aim of stabilizing the finances off the field and then during January 2015 became outright owner of the club as chairman. When Keith McMahon resigned in early 2015. Before in 2012-13, the Mead finished 3rd in this division and beat Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final to gain promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time in their history. The club’s stay in the Premier Division lasted just one season, and the club endured two turbulent seasons, after Keith McMahon resignation The Chairman appointed Terry Spillane as his replacement unfortunately his reign was terminated by the Chairman early 2016 although the team was in the play-off positions. In the summer of 2016 the Chairman appointed Tommy Warrilow as the first-team manager, and with a new man at the helm came fresh hopes for the season, as Warrilow alongside his number two former Leather and Dartford skipper Alex O’Brien looked to take the club back to the Bostik Premier League. Pre-season began with a completely new-look squad yet it proved to be a historic season in the FA Cup, when the club were the first to play a tie in the Channel Islands before reaching the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in the club’s history. In March 2017, the Chairman announced that the Club due to unacceptable rising costs at Baylis Avenue the Chairman had reached

agreement with the Directors of Dartford FC to enter into a five- year Ground share Agreement that would allow the Club to play their home games at Princes Park Stadium. During the 2017-2018 close season, this Groundshare was formally sanctioned by the new Bostik league directors, as well as confirming that for the first time, the Mead would be competing in the South Division for the upcoming season. In August 2017, the club enjoyed a record 8-0 win in the FA Cup (away to East Preston) which was not only the Clubs biggest ever win in the competition but was also the first time, we have won a competitive game by eight clear goals! By the end of 2017-2018 season, the club had netted over one hundred League goals but missed out on the end of season Play Offs. Season 2018-2019 dawns with some new personnel but with the same targets…

A TRIBUTE TO PETER TIERNEY

ELLIOTT

Two other people who knew Peter very well are our former Secretary DAVE JOY and ALAN MARTIN another of our Vice Presidents. Peter was regularly a passenger with Dave to away games where they were joined by Alan and Albert. Albert’s moving tribute is on the middle pages, but here are Alan’s with Dave’s first…

OPERATIONS AND INVESTMENTS

Dave told us: “I’ve known Peter for many years I first met Peter when I was Secretary at Erith and Belvedere, Peter was at Thamesmead Town, but he would often come to Erith for a pint when Thamesmead’s matches were postponed, he would also come some Sunday lunchtimes too, join our little weekly social get together. “When I joined Thamesmead, I got to know Peter more. Peter became a friend, he was a genuine lovely man that I always had time for and would pick him up at times to take him to matches in the absence of Albert! “My best memory of Peter as I’m sure others will mention, when we got through to the Ryman play-off at Maldon and it went to penalties – he hated penalties – and having

followed the Mead all through the season and in our moment of glory promptly disappeared in to the bar, while the penalties were taken – can’t remember who it was, but someone had to go and find him to tell him we’d won! “He loved his football; he enjoyed a laugh, a pint and was just an all-round lovely man that I cannot speak highly enough of he had my total respect.

lost a top man from their lives, but he will have left them with strong characters as he was himself. God Bless Pete it was my Honour and privilege to have called you my friend.” Next is Alan’s tribute: “I have had the pleasure off knowing Peter as a friend neighbour and sporting companion for 38 years.”

ELLIOTT

“I could have not asked for a better friend he was the nicest man you could have ever meet.

OPERATIONS AND INVESTMENTS “Peter’s passing was a great shock to me I had visited him in hospital on a couple of occasions I knew he was a fighter and I’m sure he fought right up till the end. “Peter will leave me with nice memories of a lovely, friendly man, he leaves me with good friends in his family Pat, Gary and Erika; they’ve

“Our memories together and with the Thamesmead Town family will never be replicated again such a lovely man who will be missed by everyone who knew him!” “A true Thamesmead Town legend – Rest in Peace, Peter – god bless!”

A TRIBUTE TO PETER TIERNEY <

A TRIBUTE TO PETER TIERNEY The longest serving manager of the club knew Peter longer than most of us as they met when the boss was just 13 years old and here relates many, many happy memories – the current boss of VCD Athletic, KEITH McMAHON… “I first met Peter when I was 13 years old as I went to school with his daughter Erika. “I sometimes used to go around their house for lunch and Peter would be there. I was mad on football back then and I knew Peter managed Thamesmead Town, so I would have chats with him about football. “As I grew up and started managing myself, I used to see Peter when VCD played Thamesmead and he always had time to have a chat with me and ask how I was doing. “When I joined Thamesmead was when I actually saw the man Peter was. He was along with Albert Mr Thamesmead. He did everything for the club so when I joined I followed in his footsteps. “It was contagious how he made you feel about the club and that is why we were so successful as a club because we were a family and that was because everyone put in the effort as he did all his life for the club. “People used to say to me why did I commit so much of my life

PAGE 26

to Thamesmead and my answer was simple. It was because of Peter and Albert who I had seen over the years work so hard to make the club the best it could be. “They had seen people come and go and be made promises which normally didn’t happen, but they kept working to make the club survive. “When I took over as manager Peter was so supportive of me. If I have had a bad day or we had lost, Peter would be the first person I saw, and he always was kind. “In my 11 years as manager, he never once moaned at me about a result and never doubted what I was doing as a manager. When we won he was buzzing and he always thanked me which I found strange as it was his club, but he was very genuine in what he said.”

managed to get themselves to that level and all he was doing was saying thank you to me. “It will be a day I will always remember not just because we got promoted but to see Peter’s reaction and what it meant for him was brilliant. “Everyone in football would tell you that Thamesmead Town was a friendly and family club and that was down to Peter – he was the first person you would see, and he would meet and greet everyone with a smile and as I said before he was very genuine. “Thamesmead was unique as a club, and I don’t think there will be a club like that again – we were a proper family and Peter the reason behind that.

“I always remember the day we won the play-off final and got into the Ryman Premier League.

“It is hard to put certain things into words sometimes, but Peter meant a great deal to me – he was a lovely man and someone I was very proud and honoured to have known for such a long period of my life.

“Peter was over the moon and very emotional. He couldn’t believe that his club he founded 45 years ago with Albert had

“He is someone that I am going to miss massively but someone I will always remember and never forget. Love you Pete.”

MEAD YOUTH This afternoon we’re delighted to welcome the first of the Mead’s new Youth teams to Princes Park to watch the first team. Today, its Graham and Chris with the under 13s and we asked the bosses for some words on their side and this is what they came up with.. Good afternoon everyone, we are pleased to attend our first match of the season watching the first team. The boys have been looking forward to seeing them play and we hope to bring them good luck and we get the three points.

competitive squad with good blend of players that enables us to adapt our tactics and play different formations as and when needed.

Under 13’s is a transition year where the players move from 9-a-side to full 11-a-side football.

We had so many good players, so we have managed to form two squads, Thamesmead Town, who will play in the Kent Youth League Central Division and the development squad Welling Youth, who will play in the Selkent B league.

As well as adapting to new formations and positions, the boys will play on a full-size pitch, so fitness levels need to be increase. Moving to 11-a-side is a manager and coach’s nightmare, you have to increase your squad numbers but, more importantly, have a balanced squad, so every player gets time on the pitch. Our preparations have gone very well and we feel we have a very

PAGE 28

We ran trials and trained right through to mid-July this year as we slowly built the squad.

Trying to put a pre-season plan together during school holidays is another interesting challenge for coaches and managers! The squad only return to preseason last week, we have had an intense period of training and games, before the league games

start on the 9th September. All squad members will return from holidays over this weekend and should have a full squad for the opening game of the season. Both of us are really looking forward to working with the players, improving their game but, most importantly, making sure every player enjoys their football. They are a bright and talented bunch, who take on board information well and I am sure we are going to have a fantastic season. Hopefully the boys will be regularly attending first team games throughout the season and we can update you on our progress. Good luck to the first team today! Graham and Chris

> A TRIBUTE TO PETER TIERNEY

A TRIBUTE TO PETER TIERNEY Next to pay tribute to Peter is TERRY HILL – a former manager and Chairman of the Mead, and a regular golfing partner of Peter… “What can I say about a man that was loved by all; he was Thamesmead Town FC through and through; a founder member of TTFC with his best mate Albert. “I’ve known Peter for the best part of 30 years. Having been Manager and Chairman, I was lucky to have Peter as part of the best committee in the league that was well known to all. “He always looked after the opponents committee, having a laugh and making sure they

were fed and watered. “Peter loved his football and will be well remembered for his “disappearing acts” whenever we got a penalty. I used to look round for him and he was gone like a shot to the toilet or more likely to the bar. “He loved to socialise ‘beer’. Many a time we used to sit in the old TTFC back room with all the players and talk about the game. “Over the last few years

Peter, Alan and myself became members of Barnehurst Golf Club and played a few times a week – none of us could really play, but we had a laugh and a chat afterwards! “Peter was a private man, a family man. Always spoke about his Pat, who he loved dearly. It was a privilege and a pleasure to know such a lovely man. The comfort I have is that we looked after him. “He was my mate and I will miss him!”

A TRIBUTE TO PETER TIERNEY <

A TRIBUTE TO PETER TIERNEY Over the years many players would have played in Mead colours in front of Peter – here are the tributes from just two – keeper ROB BUDD and striker DEAN BOWEY… Rob told us: “I met when I joined Thamesmead about six years ago, Peter was like so many at the club – so welcoming and kind and just made it very easy to be joining a new side. “He was just a great bloke. Even after I left the club, I’d see him at games and he liked to have a chat and ask how things was and how family was. “He the sort of guy that make non-league clubs and more teams need people like Peter.

words of encouragement after a defeat. That always stuck with me. “On away trips, the players would go back to the Albert ‘pots & pans’ top of gravel hill. Peter & Albert would often join us for a pint or two. “We had a great season that year finishing 4th, which was down to the camaraderie of the players & TTFC staff etc which Peter was a massive part of.

Now its Dean’s turn – he said: “From day one when I signed for TTFC in 1992, Peter made me feel so welcome at the club.

“When I left, I came back to TTFC as an opponent many times, nothing changed. Peter treated me exactly the same as when I was a TTFC player; we’d always have a pint after and mull over the game.

“Peter was always the first to come and congratulate us in the bar after a win, or

“Now in 2005 I returned to TTFC somewhat older – 42 to be precise – to play for Steve

PAGE 34

THAMESMEAD TOWN VS SITTINGBOURNE

O’Boyle’s TTFC reserves and there he was – Peter – still there and doing what Peter does. He welcomed me back with open arms, on a good few occasions he’d be there cheering us on. “I was lucky enough to captain us to the title; Peter was over the moon for me! “Some 10 years later, Peters daughter Erika sends me a link (via Twitter) where someone asked Peter who was TTFC’s best ever player? Peter names me! To say I’m honoured and proud is an understatement. “Peter was a football man! I’ve had so many clubs in over 30 year playing career and he was the most genuine man you could ever wish to meet! “A Gentleman and a class act – Mr Thamesmead!”
