THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

STEVE HOUSHAM May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Scunthorpe United to the Eon Visual Media Stadium, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Hi all and welcome back to the new football season! It might seem a long time for you the fans, but myself and Darryn Stamp have been non-stop since the final whistle of last season’s historic campaign. Myself and Darryn are delighted to be staying as the management team and there was no hesitation in staying, but it has been a tough summer for us trying to keep players. As we all know, money rules in modern day football, so there has been departures, but early doors we managed to secure Curtis Bateson, Danny Emerton, Mark Gray and Jordan Cooke to another deal. We’ve also signed some new faces in Leigh Hutchinson, a striker who maybe raw at this level, but he is a pacey forward with an eye for a goal. Bobby Johnson also joins and is a lad I’ve been a fan of for some years. He’s a hard-working midfielder who also is very good footballer, too. Jake Picton, who I had at Gainsborough, also

joins and he is a vastly experienced player who mainly plays as a centre back, but would play anywhere and give it everything in every game. So I would like to welcome them on board and hope they all hit the ground running. I would like to thank all the league clubs that have agreed to play us in pre-season. As we all know in non-league, to get clubs from the Football League is a massive help to our club. On August 5th we start our new campaign, of course we are really looking forward and hopefully we can get off to a good start. It will be a tough league with full-time clubs and some big spending clubs, but as you saw last season myself and Darryn will get a group of players together who will have big hearts, great spirit and give everything they have got. We will do our very best in every game and show that heart and desire can also get you success, so fasten them seatbelts again, enjoy the ride and get behind the lads your support means everything Up the Villagers! THE OWNERS

THE OWNERS

STEVE & EMAN FORSTER Welcome back to the Eon Visual Media Stadium, I hope we enjoy a great game of pre-season football and I welcome everyone from Scunthorpe United who have made the journey.

We are really excited about the forthcoming Vanarama National League North season. We are again going to be playing in a very competitive league. As usual, the champions will gain automatic promotion, but there will now be six play-off places to play for. This should ensure that the season is kept alive right until the last game. Like all of you, we are hoping this season for a cup run this season. Let us hope the draw is kind to us. Steve Housham is doing a great job mixing youth and experience with his new signings and we are sure that we will have a squad that is capable of competing well. We need to make the Eon Visual Media Stadium our “friendly fortress” this season. The club gained a tremendous amount of praise from visiting fans last season. Indeed, we came seventh in a vote on the

favourite National League grounds. The club’s volunteers have been awesome this close season. They have put in a tremendous amount of work and the ground is looking fantastic. The club has invested in a high maintenance programme over the summer to improve the pitch to keep to our very high playing standard that we are known for. We would like to thank our sponsors, our volunteers and the management team, all of whom have worked so hard over summer break. Without their efforts the club would not be anything like this standard. Now it is over to Housh and Stampy, their back-room team and the players and, of course, our loyal supporters, to make the coming season a great experience. With our team providing youth, enthusiasm, team work and having Housh and Stampy at the helm we should see some fantastic matches. Keep supporting this great community club and help to put North Ferriby on the map once again. Steve & Eman Forster Club Owners

SCUNTHORPE UNITED

North Ferriby United take to the field at the Eon Visual Media Stadium for the first time this pre-season and host League One side Scunthorpe United. The Iron enjoyed a great campaign last year finishing third in the table and, while they were knocked out of the play-offs by Millwall, the signs of progress at the club were clear to see. Manager Graham Alexander will have designs on automatic promotion this time around, with another play-off berth the minimum target. However, they will have to do that without their No.1 goalkeeper. Luke Daniels was snapped up by Brentford, with 29-year-old penning a three-year deal with the Championship club. The side also lost captain Stephen Dawson, who left for pastures new with Bury, so the

need for a leader to step up is clear. The Iron’s first recruit of the transfer window was central defender Cameron Burgess. The 21-year-old joins the Glanford Parkbased side for an undisclosed fee, penning a three-year deal, leaving Fulham having been there for six years. Alexander is expected to name an experimental side and spoke about the opening games saying: “For the first two games against North Ferriby United and York City, we will probably have two squads where no player plays more than 45 minutes.” The game today marks the first game for Scunthorpe, before games with York, their tour of Austria, before playing Sunderland at home and finishing their preparations away at Luton Town. THE OPPOSITION

THE HISTORY OF

SCUNTHORPE UNITED

The team is nicknamed The Iron, and has played in a home strip of claret and blue for most of its history. The club plays its home games at Glanford Park, having moved from the Old Showground in 1988. The club was formed in 1899, before turning professional in 1912 and joined the Football League in 1950 when it was placed in Division 3 North. It achieved promotion to Division Two in 1958, where it stayed until 1964, but has spent most of its time as a Football League club in the bottom division. The club has had more success recently, however, it was promoted from the Football League Two in 2005, and then spent three out of four seasons from 2007 in the Football League Championship.

The Iron were relegated to Football League One in 2011, having finished bottom of the Championship. The club then suffered a further blow, being relegated to the Football League Two in 2013. However it was fortunate enough to immediately bounce back, winning promotion back to the League One at the end of the 2013–14 season. In recent years, the club has developed a reputation for developing promising young strikers, having sold Billy Sharp, Martin Paterson and Gary Hooper on for seven-figure sums. Scunthorpe United was also the first club in England to build a cantilever stand after their old East stand burnt down in 1959, four years before Sheffield Wednesday constructed its cantilever stand at Hillsborough. NEW SIGNINGS

INTRODUCING

LEIGH HUTCHINSON New North Ferriby United signing Leigh Hutchinson sits down with The Villagers programme to give us his thoughts on the move and what he can bring to the club. I had been involved in a very special season for Cleethorpes and to be part of that was amazing for me, I think it was only this level of football and knowing Steve Housham from previous club that pulled me away from Cleethorpes. I’m overwhelmed with the opportunity! Their staff and fans have been so supportive, but this move was a no-brainer for me. When an opportunity like this comes around, you have to grab it with both hands! When I got that phone call, there was no negotiating I just said: “I’m in.” I was instantly excited, I think I went straight to the gym! I’m friends with Reece Thompson, he had nothing, but good words to say about the club, fans, players etc and seeing the team spirit the Ferriby lads had last season, I knew I wanted to be part of that. Housham has asked me to come in, work as hard as I can, make the most of the opportunity and play with confidence. Enjoy it and the goals will come! I bring energy and work rate, hopefully the goals will follow. This is a new level for me, but if I’m fit and sharp I’m confident I’ll find the back of the net. Leigh Hutchinson Striker

NEW SIGNINGS

INTRODUCING

JAKE PICTON Jake Picton shines a light on his move to North Ferriby United and cites manager Steve Housham as a massive factor in the move to the Eon Visual Media Stadium. It was definitely an easy decision to play for Steve Housham again. I really enjoyed playing under him at Gainsborough Trinity. You always know where you stand with Housh and he has always got his players’ backs. I can’t wait to get playing for him again. I think I can bring versatility to the squad, being able to play in a few different positions. Also, I have lot of experience playing games in this league, so that will help. It was a tough season for Gainsborough last season, but I’m looking forward to giving my all and helping North Ferriby finish as high as we possibly can. Jake Picton Defender

NEW SIGNINGS

INTRODUCING

BOBBY JOHNSON Bobby Johnson talks about making the step-up to the Vanarama National League North with North Ferriby after signing on the dotted line recently. It was a great feeling to know that a club like North Ferriby United and Steve Housham were interested in signing me. I’ve known Housham from when he was the Gainsborough Trinity manager a couple of years ago. When I was playing at Retford United, there was talk of him being interested, but the move never fabricated. I’m really looking forward to making the stepup to the National League North and I know that I’m going to have to be in great physical condition. It’ll be a big pre-season and hopefully I’ll hit the ground running when the season starts. Housham has asked that I work hard week in week out and go out and enjoy my football which is a big aspect of the game for me. Hopefully I can be playing every week, scoring goals and help this club push for promotion. Bobby Johnson Midfielder

THE JUNIORS

THE JUNIORS

CHRIS CURTIS

The North Ferriby United head of youth development Chris Curtis sits down to discuss his role within the club, his thoughts for the season and the youth set-up at the club. Hello everyone and welcome back to the Eon Visual Media Stadium. During the latter stages of last season, the club underwent some changes within the management team. As a result of this, the club have asked me to take up the role Head of Youth Development in order to create a pathway into the first-team for local children and young adults. Offering a more sustainable way of running the club, which is seen as a bonus. I have been with the club for four years now, as a rotational youth development coach. For two seasons I managed one of our under-18 sides, and have since assisted our under-14s, 16s & 17s managers. I enjoyed playing football at an amateur level and decided to step up into coaching. I shall be overseeing the running of our youth development section, of which this season we have already registered 17 teams. I work along side a youth committee comprised of youth team coaches. I proposed and set out two main targets. The first being that we establish a clear link

between the first-team, academy side and youth teams. Progress has already been shown through three graduates from the academy side playing for the first-team last season. The second aim is that we promote and improve our female provision at the club, which shall involve our youth coaches going into primary schools and setting up various projects in partnership with the East Riding County FA. We would like to raise the profile of the youth section over the next season, we have already taken steps in order to achieve this by setting up our Twitter account, so please give it a follow! The club have asked me to provide regular updates to our programme editor, in order to give the fans, and travelling supporters a chance to get an insight into what is going on at the club and steps that we are taking, wherever we can in order to improve. I shall be around the ground on match days so feel free to approach for a chat. Chris Curtis Head Of Youth Development NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

STADIUM WORKS

You may think that when the football season finished the work is over. Not at North Ferriby, we’ve had a large number of supporters helping around the ground doing a variety of things. The club would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who gave up their time to help out!

16

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

STADIUM WORKS

The annual call to arms was made to help spruce up the ground by means of repairs, painting and gardening. On our first day we combined with the Supporters Club AGM, which is probably why the turn out for the AGM was the lowest I can remember! Some of us set to work repainting the green in the main stand, others the railings around the pitch and others, mentioning no names, after a long sit down in the dug outs finally did some pruning. Whilst doing the main stand we thought the cross beams could do with painting. Someone decided they would look better white. A great plan & end result, but doing it was very hard. Our second session saw our hedge trimmer extraordinaire getting to work and making short work of the hedges. The new snack bar was painted inside, the exit doors in the main stand were, too. The long grass & weeds behind the main stand and those at smokers corner were attacked along

with the gutters above the clubhouse cleared out. After wire brushing the cross beams we attempted to under coat them, but ran out of paint. The Saturday came around and the team glossed the cross beams. I and others attempted to paint the home dressing room, but ran out paint. The tops of the hedges were tidied up. Some of the advertising hoardings had been removed, so the gaps and around the hoardings were painted. Anti-climb paint has been added to the wall at the Allotment end and Dixon’s Dive. On our final Saturday, will see us hopefully finish the changing rooms, add the gloss to the exit doors and thoroughly clean the ground. We’ll also help putting the posts up. Thanks to all who helped. This club needs people like you! Anthony Wood

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

VIEW FROM THE STANDS

VIEW FROM THE STANDS by Sam Shepherd Well here we are again, after a few weeks of pretending to enjoy gardening or shopping, we are back and ready for the football season to start again. First of all though, we have an exciting build up in pre-season and today we welcome Scunthorpe United to the Eon Visual Media Stadium. We have several connections with the club and it’s good to test our arm against a Football League side. Steve Housham will be keen to get one over on his old side, while Rory Watson is sure to receive a warm welcome back to Ferriby after the tremendous season he had for us last year. Obviously this is just a friendly, but it’s always intriguing to see how the team is shaping up heading into the new season. We will see several new faces on show for Ferriby today as we welcome new signings Jake Picton, Bobby Johnson and Leigh Hutchinson to the EVM Stadium. Picton is a defender who has played for several non-league clubs so has experience, while Johnson and Hutchinson are exciting players that I have heard several good things about. They will be looking to make a big impression today as they look to cement a starting berth for the league campaign. Looking ahead to the league season, we are

back in the National League North again. We had a great adventure last season especially on the final day at Torquay, but survival wasn’t to be so we are back in the second division of non-league football. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing as this league is more exciting and competitive than ever and we have several juicy games to look forward to. We can look forward to several derbies this season as York came down with us and it would be great to win at Bootham Crescent again after our memorable New Year’s Day victory last season. We also face Steve Housham’s former club Gainsborough who he will want to prove a point against and finally we will face Boston United. Perhaps our most bitter rivals, we have had some memorable wins over The Pilgrims in recent years and the banter is already flying between the two sets of supporters on social media. If we only win two games all season I hope they are against Boston. Looking back to today’s game, hopefully this can be a stepping stone to building a team ready to take on the NLN challenge this season. That’s what pre-season is for so hopefully Ferriby can put in a good performance. Sam Shepherd
