MANAGER’S COLUMN

STEVE

HOUSHAM

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Braintree Town to our home on this Saturday afternoon, and hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Good afternoon and welcome to our first game in what is going to be an exciting season for all involved at North Ferriby United. I am delighted to be chosen as the man to lead Ferriby into the new adventure ahead and I’m honoured and proud and so should everybody involved with the club. I would like to thank all involved for giving me and Darryn Stamp a warm welcome to the club. We lost a lot of players during the summer and as we say in football terms the spine of the team was ripped apart but myself and Darryn have been busy recruiting and building a team we believe can compete at this level with young hungry players. Pre-season is now over and the players have been fantastic and worked so hard. The game have been good in both positive and negative ways and we have learnt a lot but every coach and player will say the same they are glad it’s over and bring on the games! There is a lot of big clubs in the league I’m not going to pull out one team I’m looking forward

NEW MAN AT THE HELM - STEVE HOUSHAM

to playing because I’m looking forward to playing against them all it will be a great experience. We have been working hard with the players to drill it into them that we want to play football by passing in the right areas, working hard when in and out of possession. So hopefully people will see we try to play football the right way. Sometimes we may have to mix it up but we have the squad to do that. Today’s opponents Braintree Town are a bit like ourselves they have had a bit of a change but I

expect a tough game. They had a great season last year and will want to continue from that so we will have to be on top of our game. I would like the fans to be proud of their club and enjoy every game as we enter this historic season. There will be ups and downs but pinch yourselves it’s real Ferriby are in the top flight on Non-League football so enjoy and be proud. BRAINTREE TOWN

North Ferriby United host Braintree Town in their first ever National League fixture... The 2016/17 season gets underway with North Ferriby United hosting Braintree Town at the Eon Visual Media Stadium. Braintree Town will be hoping to build on their campaign last year and go on step further and gain promotion. A third-placed finish ensured the Iron qualified for the Play-offs and were matched against Grimsby Town. But their pursuit of promotion was halted when Omar Bogle’s 110th minute goal sent the Mariners to the final after a 1-1 draw over the two legs. Braintree, like Ferriby, have had a change of manager at the helm with Jamie Day replacing Danny Crowley who moved to Lincoln City. The 36-year-old Day resigned as assistant manager of Forest Green Rovers after

6

they parted company with Ady Pennock. Town have added plenty of new faces to their ranks whilst also losing some and began pre-season with a 3-0 victory over Heybridge Swifts. Defeat against Bury Town was to follow before they picked up two wins against Lowestoft Town and Thurrock and a draw against Maldon & Tiptree in the space of five days. The side rounded off preparations for the new season by beating both Concord Rangers and Stortford. The new-look North Ferriby will have to settle quickly into the game against a side that will be expecting to challenge for promotion again this year whilst the Villagers will have to make the most of their home advantage.

ROUND-UP HALL ROAD RANGERS 0-5 NFU

NFU 4-1 GRIMSBY TOWN

This proved to be a fairly comfortable for The Villagers on a sultry afternoon. Ferriby enjoyed the greater possession throughout the game and generally looked comfortable in defence against game Hall road side. Ferriby got off to a good start with a goal after just eight minutes. Durran Reynolds long throw-in was headed home from close range by Jamil Ible. Ferriby continued to control the game and a second goal came after 33 minutes. Alex Davidson burst down the centre before releasing Danny Clarke who slid the ball past the advancing Douglas. The goal was no more than The Villagers deserved. Ferriby clinched the game two minutes before half-time when Conner Robinson scored from close-range following a cross from the right. The second-half performance was perhaps not as crisp as that of the first-half. Even so, Ferriby still had the better of the game. The fourth goal came in the 88th minute. Danny Clarke chased a long-ball in what seemed a lost cause. However, Douglas sliced the ball over his own head and Clarke ran round him to slide the ball in to the empty goal. Ferriby rubbed salt in to Rangers’ wounds when Jamie Forrester picked-up the ball in midfield to fire home a low shot from 30 yards.

The first-half was an entertaining game with both sides prepared to play constructive and attractive football. The first ten minutes belonged to The Villagers but only went close through a Steve Brogan free-kick that curled wide of the far post. Star striker Omar Bogle should probably have scored after 19 minutes but put the ball wide after a good three-man move. The breakthrough came after 26 minutes. Ible’s clearance was flicked-on by Simon Russell to Connor Robinson. His pass allowed Curtis Bateson to take the ball on before firing past the advancing James McKeown. Ferriby now took the game to The Mariners and went two up after 35 minutes. Danny Clarke freed Robinson on the right and his perfectly flighted cross to the far post was headed home by Russell. Ferriby expected a response from Grimsby after the interval and it came after 47 minutes when Luke Summerfield scored with a cross-shot from the left corner of the penalty area. There were near misses at each end. Clarke drew two saves from McKeown before Ferriby got their third goal after 61 minutes. Steve Brogan wrong-footed a defender before scoring from 18 yards. Three minutes later the game was over. Vincent Mukendi out-paced the defence before hitting the ball past the advancing keeper. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

PRE-SEASON

NFU 0-2 HULL CITY This was an entertaining game especially in the first-half. Hull fielded their Development team against a Ferriby side that contained a number of triallists. Both sides went close early-on Ferriby’s Ryan Kendall drew a save from keeper Will Mannion then Connor Oliver fired narrowly wide of the post. Greg Luer latched on to a defensive error and raced towards the Ferriby goal. Keeper Rory Watson react quickly to come out and smother Luer’s shot. Both teams looked to get forward but chances were at a premium. Ferriby’s mark gray headed wide at the far post. At the other end, Taron Hare did well to head a shot

BARTON TOWN 0-2 NFU Ferriby deserved this win they were the stronger team and pressed Barton throughout the game. The Villagers could have won by a larger margin as they went close on a number of occasions. The first goal after 27 minutes was perhaps a little fortunate. Ben Middleton’s quick free-kick to Adam Porritt found the Barton sleeping and Porritt’s cross-cum-shot went in at the far post. The second goal came from Alfonso Mensa after 54 minutes when he latched on to a through-ball to hit the ball past the advancing Charlie Holden. Regular substitutions by both sides made any sort of continuity difficult but Ferriby retained control of the game. Barton had only two on-target efforts, both from Rob Petch. The first was turned round by Craig Ellison onehanded as he dived full-length. The second was deflected for a corner.

off-the line. City took the lead after 38 minutes. Elmohamady’s cross from the right was knocked home at the near post by Greg Olley. City clinched the game after 48 minutes. Luer capitalised a weak back-header to chip substitute keeper Craig Ellison. The regular second-half substitutions by both teams disrupted the flow of the game and there were few meaningful goal attempts although Mark Gray went close twice for Ferriby. Harvey Rodgers and Ben Hinchcliffe both headed wide for City. Mark Gray went close twice in a minute for Ferriby but a goal was not going to come.

BRIDLINGTON TOWN 1-1 NFU

WINTERTON RANGERS 0-5 NFU

The Villagers could not really complain about the result. They had the better of the first-half and could have been two or three goals in front rather than level at the interval. Ferriby had most of the possession and territory in the first-half. However, it was Bridlington who took the lead after 11 minutes with the first on-target attempt from either side. Brad Agnew fired in a cross shot from the left that found the net. The Villagers first on-target brought the equaliser after 14 minutes. Curtis Bateson drilled a low shot in to the goal via the inside of the post. Ferriby’s second-half performance was far from convincing. It lacked any real cohesion and this allowed Bridlington to have greater territorial possession. Chances were few from either side. Andy Norfolk scored a deserved winner for Bridlington after 75 minutes, powering in a header. Ferriby never really looked like getting an equaliser. The nearest they came was a Ryan Kendall shot that grazed the cross-bar.

The Villagers ran out comfortable winners against Winterton Rangers. Ferriby took the lead after seven minutes. Steve Brogan’s corner was headed home from close range by a trialist. Simon Russell drew two saves from the keeper before the Villagers doubled their lead after 18 minutes. Steve Brogan found Ryan Fallowfield on the left and his low cross was turned in at the far post by one of the trialists. The Villagers’ third goal came after 42 minutes with Brogan again providing a telling pass for the trialist to link well and score. Any hopes Rangers may have had of a revival were dashed after 51 minutes when Bateson lashed a 22-yard shot in to the top corner. The final goal came after 65 minutes when Ryan Kendall rose at the far post to head home Sam Topliss’ pin-point cross.

The Villagers played poorly at Cleethorpes. It was really disappointing performance given that this was the final pre-season game. The Villagers had only two further attempts on goal throughout the game. Skelton’s goal came after 10 minutes when he scrambled the ball home from Simon Russell’s corner. From this point on the game largely belonged to Cleethorpes. Their attempts on goal were either off-target or found Jordan Douglas, in the first-half, and Craig Ellison in the second. Cleethorpes were often quicker to the ball and their passing was more accurate. A well-worked move saw late Alex Flett equalise with a low shot five minute from time. It was the very least that Cleethorpes deserved.

GUEST COLUMN

View From The

STANDS

A new manager, players and style of play North Ferriby United fan Jack Hickman give us his take on the build-up to the new season. We are here! Finally, we are getting our maiden campaign in the National League underway. Am I actually awake or is this still a dream? This is a historical moment for a club such as North Ferriby United and I am happy to be supporting them in now my seventh season. Along with fellow friends Sam Shepherd, Ash Walker and Jack Salt. Now, since our now famous victory over AFC Fylde in May, a lot

football and to play in his new style of football which he has brought to Ferriby. Seven pre-season friendlies were played before today’s game. Hall Road Rangers, Grimsby Town, Hull City, Barton Old Boys, Bridlington Town, Winterton Rangers and finally Cleethorpes Town. What we saw in these friendlies were a lot of trialists. With many of the key players from last season leaving, we needed

PRE-SEASON ACTION VS HULL CITY AFC

has changed. A new manager, new coaching staff and probably the biggest change, the players. A lot of last season’s team have decided to leave and join ex-manager Billy Heath at FC Halifax Town. So it has been a very big task for the now manager Steve Housham and player/assistant Darryn Stamp to gather a squad which is capable of competing in the fifth tier of English 22

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

plenty of players which were able to make the step up to play, and also play well in the National League. Two defeats came at Hull City and Bridlington which weren’t the best of games let’s say. A draw at Cleethorpes and four wins, including a 4-1 win against a strong Grimsby side gave the fans something to cheer about. But everyone knows, pre-season is pre-season, and the

main objective for Ferriby was to gather a squad and build fitness. Ten new players arrived including Vinny Mukendi, who impressed everyone with his presence in the air, and was amazing with his feet too. I was also impressed with Simon Russell and Stephen Brogan. The two ex-Gainsborough players knew the Housham way of football after playing under him the year before and they showed excellent team spirit and look to have settled in very well to life at North Ferriby. Let’s hope that these players and the rest of the signings can make an instant impression with a very good opposition in Braintree visiting the Eon Visual Media Stadium for today’s game. My ambitions for this season is to make sure we go into each game with pride especially after all that we have achieved in the last 4 years. From winning The Doodson Cup against Rushall in 2012, to winning the FA Trophy in 2015. We will be facing an uphill task and we will be huge underdogs going into each game we play. So let’s turn that into a positive. I hope you all enjoy the game, both North Ferriby and Braintree fans. A 46 game National League season is now underway.
