THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

STEVE HOUSHAM May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Leeds United to the Eon Visual Media Stadium, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. At the time of writing these notes, we’re two games down in our busy pre-season schedule. The first game saw us take all available players to Hall Road Rangers and it was good to get a mixture of players out there. The plan was to look at giving them all a 45-minute workout, before we entertained Scunthorpe United, were we stepped up the minutes for the players. As always, pre-season is about experimenting and looking at players, getting to know the strengths and weakness of the team and individuals. Of course winning games breeds good habits, but to me, it’s about getting match fit and getting to understand the players. Yes there was positives, but also negatives and that’s what pre-season is about for clubs like us. It also brings in much-needed income to get teams like Scunthorpe and now we’re expecting a sell-out crowd here, tonight, against Leeds United. It’s also a great experience for our players to

play against the big-name clubs, who also have international players in there ranks. We are still looking at bringing players in because we have lost a lot, yet again, during the summer. I would have loved to keep the same squad as we had last season, but in this day and age, money talks and we are unable to match a lot of those clubs. However, saying that, I wish all the players that have moved on all the very best and thank them for there efforts last season. We do, though, move on and continue to try assemble a team to compete in yet again another tough league. The players on board at the moment are hungry lads, who have points to prove and myself and Darryn will do our best to help them achieve there goals which, hopefully, will help North Ferriby United. Enjoy the game and up the Villagers! Steve Housham First-Team Manager NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

THE OWNERS

THE OWNERS

STEVE & EMAN FORSTER Welcome back to the Eon Visual Media Stadium, I hope we enjoy a great game of pre-season football and I welcome everyone from Leeds United who have made the journey.

We are really excited about the forthcoming Vanarama National League North season. We are again going to be playing in a very competitive league. As usual, the champions will gain automatic promotion, but there will now be six play-off places to play for. This should ensure that the season is kept alive right until the last game. Like all of you, we are hoping this season for a cup run this season. Let us hope the draw is kind to us. Steve Housham is doing a great job mixing youth and experience with his new signings and we are sure that we will have a squad that is capable of competing well. We need to make the Eon Visual Media Stadium our “friendly fortress” this season. The club gained a tremendous amount of praise from visiting fans last season. Indeed, we came seventh in a vote on the

favourite National League grounds. The club’s volunteers have been awesome this close season. They have put in a tremendous amount of work and the ground is looking fantastic. The club has invested in a high maintenance programme over the summer to improve the pitch to keep to our very high playing standard that we are known for. We would like to thank our sponsors, our volunteers and the management team, all of whom have worked so hard over summer break. Without their efforts the club would not be anything like this standard. Now it is over to Housh and Stampy, their back-room team and the players and, of course, our loyal supporters, to make the coming season a great experience. With our team providing youth, enthusiasm, team work and having Housh and Stampy at the helm we should see some fantastic matches. Keep supporting this great community club and help to put North Ferriby on the map once again. Steve & Eman Forster Club Owners

LEEDS UNITED

Leeds United began life under new manager Thomas Christiansen with a behind-closed-doors pre-season win over Harrogate Town. The match was the first time the new man at the helm was able to view his squad and registered a 4-2 victory. Kemar Roofe opened the scoring with an early penalty, before Madger Gomes, Pablo Hernandez and Lee Erwin all found the net. United’s head coach fielded two different sides in either half and gave his assessment on the win, saying: “I’m very happy with what I saw in the game, we were able to give 45 minutes to all of the players which was good. “I liked what I saw in certain situations,

of course there is a lot to work on, but I am generally very satisfied.” Now the Championship side head to the Eon Visual Media Stadium to take on North Feriby United. With so many leaving the Villagers, manager Steve Housham will again run the rule over a number of trialists and will no doubt experiment with players and formations. Furthermore, with Housham making to trip to Barton Town tomorrow evening and taking on Hull City’s Under-23s side at the weekend, the pre-season games are coming thick and fast for the National League North club. The Villagers opened pre-season with a 3-0 loss away at Hall Road Rangers, before a 6-0 loss against a strong Scunthorpe United outfit. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

LIAM COOPER

The former England international was snapped up by Leeds in the summer of 2016, shortly after his release from QPR. Green, a vastly-experienced goalkeeper progressed through the ranks at Norwich and enjoyed a sixyear stint at West Ham United before joining QPR in 2012.

United’s vice-captain made the switch to Elland Road from Chesterfield in summer 2014 after catching the eye in a pre-season friendly. Cooper, a product of Hull City’s Academy, has been a regular fixture in defence since his arrival and earned a first callup to the Scotland squad.

LUKE AYLING

PONTUS JANSSON

Full-back Luke Ayling penned a three-year deal over the summer to join from Championship rivals Bristol City. Ayling began his career at Arsenal, where he was a youth team-mate of Kyle Bartley, and progressed through the ranks to sign professional terms in 2009.

Swedish international defender Pontus Jansson arrived on a season-long loan from Torino to become Garry Monk’s 10th signing of summer 2016. The 25-year-old, a six-foot-five centre-back, has developed into something of a fans favourite combining his defending with goals.

THE OPPOSITION

KEMAR ROOFE Roofe, a former West Brom trainee, established himself as one of the Football League’s hottest properties during 2015/16 as he helped fire his side to promotion with 26 goals from 49 appearances. The forward, who played with Wood during his time in West Brom’s youth system.

LIAM BRIDCUTT Club captain Liam Bridcutt returned to United on a twoyear deal from Sunderland in August 2016. Bridcutt, who impressed during a loan stint at Elland Road the previous season and was soon handed the armband following the departure of defender Sol Bamba.

RONALDO VIEIRA Born in Guinea-Bissau but having grown up in Portugal and spent time on the books of European giants Benfica, the highly-rated youngster first arrived at United on trial in 2015. Last season, Vieira e stablished himself in the first team, playing 38 times in all competitions, scoring once.

PABLO HERNANDEZ

STUART DALLAS

CHRIS WOOD

Spanish midfielder Pablo Hernandez joined the Whites initially on loan from Qatari side Al-Arabi, ahead of the 2016/17 season, before penning a permanent deal in January. Hernandez came through the ranks at Valencia and arrived at Elland Road with over 130 La Liga games to his name.

The Northern Ireland international soon settled into life at Elland Road following his summer 2015 move from Brentford, ending his debut campaign as United’s Players’ Player of the Year by his teammates. Dallas began his career with homeland club Crusaders, earning just £70 a week.

The New Zealand international ended his debut season at Elland Road as United’s top goalscorer, finding the net 13 times in 2015/16. The striker then followed that with a stunning campaign last season in which he was crowned the Championship’s top scorer with 27 goals. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

FEATURE INTERVIEW

QUICK-FIRE QUESTIONS

I’m looking forward to another season at North Ferriby United! Hopefully, I can play as many gams as possible and keep getting more experience. Steve Housham said the same to me as last year and just told me to go out and enjoy playing because that’s when I’m at my best. I just need to play well and help the team in whichever way I can. I enjoyed playing a lot of first-team games last season and it was a great experience and learning curve. I started my career at Leeds at the age of 10 and I left when I was 19, so I was there for a good nine years. It was a great experience and I met a lot of great lads there. I know quite a lot of the players still at Leeds, I’m not sure who will be heading over, but they’ve got some lads my age, who are doing really well for themselves the likes of Kalvin Phillips, Lewie Coyle and Tyler Denton to name but a few. Hopefully a few of them will play and it will be great to see them again. My personal aims are to help the team get as many clean sheets as possible and I wouldn’t mind trying to chip in with a few goal after grabbing a couple last season. All things being well, I’ll have a good season this year and play some more games and get some much-needed experience under my belt.

Nickname: Skelly Age: 20 Position: Centre back Former Club: Leeds United Career Highlight: Playing at Anfield in the Youth Cup for Leeds. Favourite Team: I grew up in and around Leeds, so I would have to say them really. Favourite Footballer: John Terry. I always looked up to him, he’s a centre back I’d want to be like. Hobbies: I love a game of golf. I play crown green bowls which will get a couple of laughs when people see this.

NEW SIGNINGS

INTRODUCING

JOE PUGH

Having become one of the latest players to make the switch to the Eon Visual Media stadium, Joe Pugh sits down to discuss his reasons behind the move. I believe I have more to offer than just goals as a striker, I will work hard for the team and try to give defenders headaches. When I spoke to Steve Housham, he didn’t beat around the bush, he told me my place and told me how everything would work. He was positive towards me and told me what he expected from me. I don’t know many of the lads, I only really know Jake Picton, who I played with whilst I was on loan at Frickley last season. Conference North has a great standard of players, it will be tough for me as it would for any young lad, but I’m determined to prove certain people wrong and kick on this campaign. My aim is to score and provide as many goals as possible for the team. There’s no particular fixture that I’m looking forward to, but if I had to choose it would be either Boston or Harrogate. I know a few of the lads that play for both of the teams and it would be good to have one over on them! Joe Pugh Forward

THE KIT MANAGER

THE KIT MANAGER

SCOTT LOFAS

Often the kit manager goes unnoticed in the background, but football clubs can’t operate without one. Here at North Ferriby United, Scott Lofas divulges what his role entails.

This will be my second season as the kit manager and I am happy to be involved again this campaign. It’s a great experience for me to be involved in the club especially with the season we had last year. I’d like to think I get on well with all the lads here as a few of them love to have a bit of banter with me, especially Si and Emmo. The day to day jobs I do at training are to make sure the balls are pumped up and the water bottles are filled before each training session and the bibs are clean. On match days there are a few different jobs I do such as setting out the match-day kit for the players before they arrive. Last season each player had a set squad number and changing room peg that they have been given so the right kit needed to be on the right peg. I also set out the Jako bench wear ready to be used for the warm

up, as each players has a set, including a warm-up top and jumper. I also give each player a towel on their peg for the showers. The most important job for the lads is to choose the songs ready to be played while they are getting changed, as a few of the lads haven’t got the best choice in music. After the game the main job is to make sure I have all the playing kit especially if we are away from home. The final job is to sweep the changing rooms up before we leave. I am glad I have the opportunity to work at a good club with a great set of lads and management staff. I would like to say thanks to Housh and Stampy for letting me be part of the team and hopefully it will continue for a while yet. AWAY FAN’S PERSPECTIVE

AWAY PERSPECTIVE

DAVID WATTS

The wind of change blew through Elland Road and with it Gary Monk was replaced by Thomas Christiansen, but Leeds United fan David Watts still believes there is every reason to be optimistic. My earliest memory of following Leeds was watching Alan Clarke score the winning goal in the FA Cup Final in 1972. Since then every Leeds fan has been through the whole range of emotions. The unbridled joy of winning the league, cup finals and even the semi-finals of the Champions League. Howard Wilkinson remains the last English manager to win the league when he guided Leeds to the title in 1992. More recent years, though, have been less successful. ‘Living the Dream’ became something of a nightmare when we realised it was all paid for with Monopoly money. When the debts mounted up, the club suffered a meltdown and we ended up in the third tier, bankrupt and almost out of 16

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

business. The last century has seen Leeds cursed with a succession of owners who were mad, bad or both. At one point we even ended up owned by the only Arab bank with no money! Relegation battles were more common than promotion ones, with the only bright interludes being promotion back to the championship and, when we were a third tier team, beating Manchester United at their own ground in the cup. Over the last few weeks, though, something has changed. We have a new owner who is spending real money. Leeds Ladies are back in the fold, Elland Road has been bought back and we’re suddenly signing international players. Thomas Christiansen (pictured) isn’t yet well known as a manager, but he was a Spanish international player and the top scorer in the Bundesliga, so he has real pedigree. Last season we had a great year, before falling away at the end and this year, for the first time I can remember, I’m looking forward to the new season not just with hope, which has never died, but with genuine belief that this can be our year. GETTING TO KNOW

GETTING TO KNOW

JO GRAY

We sat down with Jo Gray to talk about her various roles at the football club. I have many roles at the club, but on the youth side I look after the female football. At the moment we have an under-10, under-12 and a ladies teams, but we are looking to expand to an under-14’s side next season. Football seems to be a big part of my family life as I have 2 girls who play, a daughter in the u12s and son who plays. My two older daughters also coach, one helps Chris with the under-10 girls side, while the other coaches the under-12s. She is also the goalkeeper coach she has a level 1 in both. Last season the ladies came second in the league which, to me, was a very good

achievement. They also got to the Cup final, but unfortunately lost due to some injuries. Girls football at the ages we have is noncompetitive football. It’s amazing to see what you can achieve, one of my daughters has been playing since she was six-years-old and was even at the girls centre of excellence for six years until it was stopped. I enjoy watching the young ones progress and it gives me a real feeling of pride coaching them and watching them develop. Jo Gray Catering Manager

VIEW FROM THE STANDS

VIEW FROM THE STANDS by Sam Shepherd Pre-season is now well underway and, at first glance, it appears that there is still quite a lot of work to do for Steve Housham and his side. Ferriby have faced Hall Road Rangers and Scunthorpe United so far and the results don’t look good. They have suffered 3-0 and 6-0 defeats respectively, but it must be said, we are still very much in the experimental stager when it comes to team selection. Several trialists have been used already, while the second- half team against Scunthorpe had a very youthful feel to it, as Steve Housham shuffled his pack and aims to find some gems that can become first-team regulars this season. Despite the two heavy defeats, Housham will be keen to emphasise that we still have a fair few friendlies to go, before the season starts and plenty of time to sort out a settled team. I want to pay tribute, at this point, to Mark Gray, Danny Emerton, Simon Russell and Curtis Bateson who were all regular first-team players last season and have all stuck around during the off season. Many players left and, perhaps understandably so, but it’s been great to see a few of the players stick around for the challenge this season and Steve Housham will 22

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

be counting on them to be his leaders. The fixtures have been announced and they couldn’t have worked out much better for us fans. I expected us to have to travel to Gainsborough over Christmas, but we don’t. Instead we have been handed a festive double header with York once again, which is brilliant. I can’t wait to spend New Year’s Day at Bootham Crescent again and hopefully we can win again like we did last year. Both Gainsborough matches fall on Bank Holiday Monday’s, which is also ideal and should guarantee big crowds. We finish the season away at FC United of Manchester, which is another mouth-watering fixture and I’m looking forward to visiting their new ground again. I hope to see as many of you as possible at Curzon Ashton on 5th August. Tonight we welcome Leeds United to the Eon Visual Media Stadium for another tough test. This is certainly a marquee friendly for us and I would like to welcome the Leeds fans who have travelled across from West Yorkshire. We hope you enjoy your night with us for what should be an entertaining match. Sam Shepherd North Ferriby United Supporter
