ISSUE 02 Welcome

Good evening everyone and welcome to our first Cup tie played at our new home. After a record-breaking weekend for the club in the FA Cup – more of which in Saturday’s programme – tonight we welcome our friends from CRAY WANDERERS (who we of course faced on the opening day of the League season) for this first-round tie in the Kent Reliance Senior Cup tie. In tonight’s copy of THE MEAD, we catch

up with the Gaffer and the Chairman following the weekend’s game and in the middle pages we focus on last Wednesday’s 2-1 win here over Hythe Town. Don’t forget we’re here again on Saturday when we return to League action when we welcome HORSHAM for a 3:00pm kick off. But first enjoy this evening and safe trip home Enjoy the game and safe trip home, Greenie

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Cray Wanderers to Princes Park our new home for the next 5 years. We have already played Cray it was our first game of the season and came away with a 2-2 draw on a 4G pitch, so we can look forward to a challenging evening. I would also like to give a warm welcome to old and new supporters to this Cup match this evening, and hopefully we will have a number of our Landlords supporters joining us this evening. It’s great to see these new supporters joining us on match days and I hope more during the season will be taking advantage of my offer to all the Dartford’s supporters that do not travel away with their team, for a concessionary price of £5 half price of the normal gate price, and if you are over 65 just £2.50 to watch a game of football and you also become a Mead Fan and receive a Mead Card. I am sure you will enjoy the

quality of football seen at our matches and I know that there will always be a warm welcome given to you as you visit us playing at your Clubs home. We have also as a favour due to John agreed to install SKY in the Champions Bar so you can also arrive early watch a match that may be covered and have some refreshments and a chat with your friends. Well here we are back home once again after having an enjoyable trip on Saturday to East Preston in West Sussex in the FA Cup the day made better by coming away with an incredible result of 0-8. The result sounds as if there was not another team on the pitch, far from it was just in my opinion a game where the squad played the way we all know they can, it even allowed Tommy to allow a few of the players that were returning from injury a few minutes in

the game. I personally love the early stages of the FA Cup and Trophy matches as it allows us to travel to grounds that we may not have visited. East Preston was one of these, before last Saturday I am advised they had not lost a match in the league, so the size of the result was never expected, but I am personally very pleased not only for our players themselves but more importantly Tommy, who has taken a lot of his personal time and put a squad together like we have at the Club this season. As I said previously tonight will be a very challenging match but hopefully we can get the rub of the green and a result. Enjoy the game! Paul Bowden-Brown Director and Owner

TOMMY WARRILOW THE manager

Welcome to Princes Park as we play in our third different competition already this season Tonight, it’s the Kent Senior Cup as we welcome Cray Wanderers to our new home for the first time. I had a great time at Cray and am delighted that everything finally seems to be going their way with their new ground and I’d like to wish them the best of luck with their new proposals that are being put forward in the near future! We have of course already faced Tony Russell’s side this season as we drew 2-2 on the opening day – a game that I think we fully deserved the point that we got. It was a fair result as both sides had chances – I think defeat would have been cruel on us and so getting a point away from home late on against a side who I expect to be there or there a bout’s come the end of April was a good point for a “good old fashioned non-league team”! Last Wednesday we faced a Hythe side who I expect to be another side up there challenging come the end of the season.

Sadly, it wasn’t the best game to watch, but the most important thing was the result and our late win. I thought the boys showed great character in withstanding a second half storm but we were always dangerous on counter attack, and I was obviously delighted with Vinesy’s late winner.

Enjoy the game tonight and see you in Champs Bar later… Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

This year I’m not going to reflect too much on performances too much, but I will say that we’ve had a great first week – it’s a great start for us especially when you remember that some of the players we’ve used haven’t had a full pre-season. Saturday of course was a great day for the club in the FA Cup with our biggest ever win in the competition and Greenie tells me that it was also a club record win as well. A great day and performance that I’ll talk more about at the weekend when we host another of my old clubs Horsham.

Wednesday 16th August Princes Park Attendance: 114 Bostik League South

HYTHE TOWN Pogue (51)

The Mead left it late to claim the points on “opening” day at Princes Park with Paul Vines coming off the bench to net the 90th minute winner as the boys maintained their unbeaten start to the season and dug out a hard earned victory against a Hythe Town side that many expect to feature come the end of April. The Mead led at half time through Laurent Mendy’s header, only for the visitors to level up just after the break through substitute Pogue. Cometh the hour though cometh the returning top scorer as super-sub Vinesy was on hand to poke home from Scott Kinch’s terrific knock down. For Vinesy it was his first goal since March after the injury that forced him to miss the end of last season. Laurent could have opened the scoring on the quarter hour but was just wide from the edge of the box before Lewis Carey brilliantly denied Adams with a stunning save after the Hythe striker had combined with Campbell. The Mead went in front on the half hour went Laurent steered

his head from Jake McIntyre corner through the crowd and into the net. The lead was preserved magnificently by Lewis with a second stunning save – this time to deny Campbell’s volley from close range. Hythe though levelled the scores six minutes into the second period when substitute Pogue, on for Grant as a half time substitute drove his shot into the net after the Mead were undone by Adams’ fine ball. Adams then went close for Hythe before Tom O’Connor went even closer at the other end as he curled a shot from distance around the keeper

only clearing the angle of post and bar by a fraction. Cook then missed another great chance for Hythe as he headed a free kick over the bar when wellplaced whilst at the other end, Kinchy and Laurent combined for Alex Teniola to find space only to bring the best out of visiting keeper Godman who pulled off a fine save to deny the Mead substitute, before another Mead replacement won the game in the first minute of stoppage time. Tonight’s victory puts the Mead in 7th place in the early season table – next stop is the first step this year on the “March to the Arch” as we head for the Sussex coast to play East Preston.

INTRODUCING

to Scott who ran to the byline and into the box. His ball across was deflected into the path of Frieter who capped an impressive performance with a crisp finish from six yards.

The Wands and the Mead took to the field in the opening game of the Bostik League South division and played out an entertaining 2-2 draw.

But the Mead weren’t to be denied a point and Kwayie scored his second of the match deep into stoppage time.

Karl Dent had given Cray an early lead which was cancelled out five minutes later through loanee Tashi-Jay Kwayie.

Cray were shocked in the FA Cup when Sevenoakes Town claimed a 3-2 victory – a win which saw them at one point lead 3-0.

Cray though regained the lead in the 51st minute after some fine play by Ben Mundele down the right who played the ball

The away side will hope to bounce back from that disappointment, but the Mead could inflict back-toback Cup exits on Cray.

CRAY WANDERERS

CLUB HISTORY The club emerged from lunchtime kick-abouts between St. Mary Cray villagers and labourers constructing a railway viaduct across the Cray Valley in north-west Kent. Soon a ground was laid out and matches were played against Army teams and other local villages. The industrial belt around the River Cray, especially the paper mills, provided much of the club’s support up till the 1950s. Sadly, a lack of archival records means that little else is known about them during this period; that is until the 1880s when local newspaper reports began referring to the club simply as St. Mary Cray. Then in January 1887 the first reference was made to the club being called Cray Wanderers. Cray Wanderers were a strong force in senior county football at the turn of the century. After being Kent Junior Cup semi-finalists and finalists in 1890/91 and 1891/92 we entered the first ever FA Amateur Cup competition in 1893/94. We also had a spell as a professional club between 1895 and 1907, and were a nursery club for Woolwich Arsenal (better known today as Arsenal FC) during part of this period. In 1894 Cray Wanderers was one of 14 founder members of the Kent League. We won the League championship in 1901/02 season. The club continued playing in this League, with one or two exceptions until their promotion to the Ryman League, at the end of the 2003/04 season. The year 1895 saw the club change its colours from chocolate

to their now-familiar amber and black. And in 1898 we moved to a new ground called Fordcroft on Cray Avenue in St. Mary Cray, where we remained until 1936. Other honours included Southern Suburban League champions in 1898/99, West Kent League champions in 1903/04. After World War One, the club switched to the London League where we remained till 1934. We rejoined the Kent League in 1934/35, but our stay in that league came to grief when, in 1936, we lost out Fordcroft ground and were forced to drop into a lower level of football. The 1951/52 season heralded a new era, and an upturn in the club’s fortunes, when local businessman Mick Slater took over at the helm. The club was elected to the London League and regained its senior status. We moved to a new ground at Grassmeade in 1955. Our stay there was a very successful period in the club’s history. Drawing extra support from the commuter town of Orpington, we played in the London League and then the Aetolian League. We were crowned league champions three times, won the League Cup twice, and also won the Kent Amateur Cup three times. In 1966/67 we switched to the semi-professional Metropolitan League for five seasons commencing before it was merged with the Greater London league in 1970 to form the Metropolitan London League. We lost our Grassmeade ground in 1973 and moved to Oxford Road in Sidcup, in time for the 1973/74

season. The 70’s proved to be a golden period for us. In 1974/75 Cray won the Met London League and the League Cup. We then joined the London Spartan League and won the league title in 1976/77 and 1977/78. We returned to the Kent League in 1978/79 and won the league title in the 1980/81 season, having been runners-up the year before. Around this time a powerful team had been developed, under the management of Harry Richardson, and we reached the FA Vase 5th round and the quarterfinal the following year. After finishing Kent League runners up in 1990/91 the club entered a lean period. A new club chairman, Gary Hillman, arrived in 1994/95 and Ian Jenkins, a Cray player since 1993, was appointed manager in 1999. By now the club was tenants of Bromley FC, having been forced to move by Kent League rules which stipulated that the Oxford Road facilities were not suitable. Once again we tasted success as champions of the Kent League in 2002/03 and 2003/04. We also reached the FA Vase quarter-final for a second time and achieved promotion into the Ryman League South Division. Five years later at the end of 2008/09 season came further promotion into the Ryman Premier League, the highest level of football that the club has played at since the Second World War. Today we are going through a period of transition which we believe will help us emulate our glories from yesteryear.
