CHAIRMAN’S NOTES
Paul
BOWDEN-BROWN May I sincerely welcome Guernsey chairman Steve Dewsnip and his fellow directors, officials and players to our home Sporting Club Thamesmead on this Tuesday evening when we play the replay of the FA Cup match, that ended in a 2-2 draw on Saturday. I hope you all have had a safe and event free journey to the ground, especially if you travelled down the M25, and after a Tuesday evening of FA Cup football, you enjoy some refreshments before you leave for your hotel ready for the early morning flight back to the island. On Friday afternoon I joined a squad of 24 travelling from Gatwick Airport together with 4 club officials. Our guests today play in the Ryman South, and within the agreement that was reached with the FA, when
04

it was decided they could play their football on the mainline certain rules were put in place. Firstly they had to fly all opponents to the island and then offer accommodation to the visiting teams that have to travel to the island to play their respective matches. So on this occasion we benefited from the same rules. Saturday matches usually have a kick-off at 1 o’clock then teams fly back to the mainland at around 6-15. As a visiting chairman I have nothing but admiration for the organisation, professionalism and friendship that was given by everyone associated with the home club. From the moment we met Nigel, a director of Guernsey FC, who lives in Welling, in a bar at Gatwick Airport. When we landed we were met by the volunteer drivers that picked
the visiting party up at the airport and took us to the hotel. They then arranged to pick us back up take us to the ground on the morning of the match. When we arrived at the ground we certainly received the red carpet treatment so on behalf of my club, Steve I thank you for your courtesy shown to all of us within the visiting party, and I personally hope it will not be too long before you play in your own ground fully owned by the club. It has been well documented that the match was going to be a truly historic occasion which may have been the reason that there was so much first class media coverage before and on the day of the match at the ground.
CHAIRMAN’S NOTES
“I am sure he will remind us of that goal in the future!”
It was a great personal honour to be part of this history making event and being able to take my club to the island. I also think it’s great that Paul Vines will hold a record of his own being the first player to score a goal on the Island whilst playing in the FA Cup. I am sure he will remind us about that goal in the future! Whilst talking about honouring things I must at this time thank Tommy and Ian, together with their management, and the squad of players themselves for the professional image they gave throughout the visit. I treated the whole party to an evening meal at the hotel on the evening before the match, it was a great sight to see the group all smart in the club colours sitting around one long table all of them relaxing, but at the same time showing what I believe is the endearing spirit within the squad. They say a strong changing room is a great basis of a successful team, and I personally think that this has been achieved since the appointment of Tommy as our firstteam manager and his backroom staff. And more importantly in my opinion, I felt the whole squad acted totally professionally throughout the visit, but more importantly for me, during the match something I impressed upon everyone in the club, and to always remember we were the visitors and guests to the island. When I was checking out on the
Saturday morning at the hotel I was chatting with the on duty manager of the hotel, he knew that I frequented a number of other hotels within the Hand Picked Hotel group, the main being the Chilston Park at Lenham, and he was asking me how I enjoyed the visit to his hotel. I said that I felt everyone had enjoyed the experience (I certainly had) and I found all the staff so very helpful but more importantly the manager advised me that my group had been respectful and polite to everyone within the hotel, truly the best of all the teams that had previously visited the Island with no hassle at all, so you can imagine how proud I felt. He said the hotel was fully booked due to a wedding so you can imagine a party of 25 players coming down to breakfast at 9-30 as we had arranged caused quite a stir, but rather than just take over the breakfast room they integrated within the other guests - something that was greatly appreciated even though this influx of people wanting breakfasts was the reason that my breakfast in my room arrived late but it was all worth it. Anyway here we are tonight with a job to finish, I am sure both teams will want to be the team in the draw by the end of the evening so I am sure the game will be hard and played at a pace as our opposition showed the metal with their fight back on Saturday, so let’s all enjoy the game of football. Now let’s enjoy the match! Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

MANAGER’S NOTES
Tommy
WARRILOW Good evening everyone and welcome to tonight’s FA Cup replay with Guernsey and I hope that all those who have made the journey here have had a safe trip and enjoy their short time with us. I’ve got mixed emotions about tonight’s replay – firstly I’m annoyed and frustrated that we weren’t able to finish the game off in the first-half on Saturday. We started excellently and created enough chances to be more in front at the break than we were. On the other hand after the second-half performance that our hosts put in I’m
06
THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
sure that Tony (Vance – the Guernsey boss) feels the same as they applied the pressure. But I always knew that the third goal would be crucial and sadly we didn’t get it – any manager will tell you how important it is but after sustained pressure Guernsey got back into the game. The bottom line is that after reflecting on the game on the flight home a draw was probably a fair result – we were dominant in the first-half and they were second. Reflecting on our first week of the season, I’m sure we
would have taken two league wins and the draw away to Guernsey to start our season. I’m a manager who will always push the boys and as I said to them the start of the season is about getting the right good habits and the right attitudes, the right mentality to want to win every game and reflect back on why we didn’t. But the nice thing now is that we’re creating enough chances to do that. So there has been some massive strides already and that can only be positive, and now looking at my squad – and it’s reasonably young – these boys can only
MANAGER’S NOTES
learn from it and become better players from it. It’ll be nice to take our first-half performance on Saturday into a busy Bank Holiday weekend and our two games. Brentwood Town have had a bit of a poor start to the league but it is only two games into the season so we won’t look too much into that as they’re a very, very good side. Aveley as well are another side who
can push on this year so the most important thing is to get a positive result tonight against Guernsey and then we’ll address the Bank Holiday weekend coming up. Thanks as ever for your support – see you in the bar after the game, Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

GUERNSEY
The two teams came together in a historic clash at Guernsey’s Footes Lane stadium on Saturday in what was the first time a FA Cup tie has been staged in the Channel Islands. The match lived up to expectations with both teams putting on a great show for the 1,142 spectators which ended in a 2-2 draw.
Paul Vines slotted home a 16th minute penalty before that advantage was doubled through Jack Mahoney. But back fought Guernsey and they halved the deficit just after the hour mark through Dave Rihoy. The Mead pushed to extend their lead and went close on numerous occasions but with five minutes remaining Rihoy completed his brace to earn a replay.
Whilst both teams will have wanted to avoid a replay the stage is set for another thrilling encounter.

THE
VISITORS
Who are the men from Guernsey to keep your eye on this evening? We introduce them to you here. CHRIS TARDIF GOALKEEPER Guernsey-born stopper who moved to the UK as a junior to take up a professional career with Portsmouth, initially before enjoying spells at both Oxford United and AFC Bournemouth (on loan). SIMON GEALL DEFENCE An underestimated player that can easily and competently fill a number of positions across the back line or in midfield, including right-back, centre-back or as a holding central midfielder. JAMIE DODD DEFENCE One of Guernsy FC’s most dependable and available players, Dodd is a dominant defender who plays mainly as a centre-back but is perfectly comfortable as a marauding left-back. SAM COCHRANE DEFENCE The skipper has been a dominant figure since taking the armband during the formation of Guernsey FC and has continually grown with the responsibility of the captaincy. A leader on and off the pitch, he was the Guernsey representative skipper for two years before
GFC started and is one of the first names on the team sheet at centre-back AKEX LE PREVOST DEFENCE A truly elegant player who is equally as comfortable at centreback as he is as a holding central midfielder, with his appearances for Guernsey FC split between the two. Has been involved with the Guernsey squad for some years now, having proved himself as a cultured player and a laidback person, who is unfazed and possesses an excellent range of passing, especially long-distance. LIAM MAHON MIDFIELD The younger of the two Mahon brothers has been involved with the GFC squad for two years, having returned to Guernsey after a spell as a youngster with Northern Premier League side Ilkeston Town from Derbyshire. Made his debut as a substitute against Hastings United in October 2014. MATT LOARING MIDFIELD A very talented, skilful and versatile attacking-minded midfielder, most effective out wide but has put in several good shifts in a deeper, more central role.
JACOB FALLAIZE MIDFIELD Talented youngster and son of GFC coach Colin. First travelled with the squad in September 2015 but made his debut as a late substitute against Carshalton Athletic on 26th October 2015. RYAN-ZICO BLACK MIDFIELD Guernsey-born midfielder who left the island at a young age to pursue a professional career in the UK, before returning to the island in the early part of 2011. SEBASTIAN SKILLEN MIDFIELD The 20-year-old former Vale Rec midfielder joined Tony Vance’s side this summer, three years after his only appearance for the Green Lions. TOM DE LA MARE MIDFIELD The versatile midfielder has been involved with GFC since our first season, when he made a couple of appearances around his time with the CV Academy in Northampton. Did not play during the next season as he was away playing semi-professionally in Belgium - an experience that brought his game on in leaps and bounds.

Match Report By Mike Green Just the width of the angle of crossbar and post denied the Mead a famous FA Cup win in Guernsey as Cristian Nanetti came within a fraction of writing yet another page in the history books of the Greatest Cup Competition in the World by winning for the Mead the first ever tie played in the Channel Islands. The Mead had silenced the home crowd – which was in excess for 1,000 – courtesy of first-half goals from Paul Vines and Jack Mahoney, before Guernsey hit back to level the scores before Cristian’s late burst took him beyond the home defense only to see his fine shot beat home keeper Tardif cannon back off the angle of post and bar and literally roll along the goal-line before hitting the corner flag before going out of play. It truly was a remarkable tie all round which was played bright sunshine throughout but with an ever increasing near gale force wind blowing across the Footes Lane pitch. The visitors had the better chances in the opening half and could have been more than the two goals in front. Vinesy opened the scoring

on the quarter hour with the FA Cup goal ever scored off of the British mainland and he expertly drilled home form the penalty spot after Cristian had been crudely brought down in the box before Jack doubled the advantage with one of the most curious and bizarre goals that was probably scored in the competition over the weekend. A corner was only half cleared and as Scott Kinch shot from outside the box, the ball looped high into the air before dipping dramatically over Tardif and onto the top of the crossbar before Jack reacted quickest to head home. The home side responded well towards the end of the first half and twice Mead keeper Andy Walker had to be at his alert best beating out shots from the edge of the box. But shortly before the break, the Mead could quite easily have been awarded a second spot kick when Cristian sprinted into the box only to “collide” with a defender and both went down, there were anxious home glances towards Referee Johnson. The official though remained unmoved and play continued. The home side spent less than ten minutes in the dressing room at half time and started the second

half on top as they pushed the Mead back. Yet despite all of their possession, Walks wasn’t really tested with young Joe Denny and Lewis Knight outstanding at the heart of the Mead defense. It took a moment of brilliance from Rihoy to get the home side back in the game as he magnificently hooked home from the edge of the box as the Mead only half cleared a corner. The Guernsey man hooked the ball over his shoulder and into the top corner of the net with Walks motionless. It really was backs to the wall for the visitors as wave upon wave of Green raids poured forward only to founder on a Blue and White wall across the edge of the box and it seemed that the Mead would hold out. Until that is a speculative ball into the box got caught on the wind and as it agonisingly dropped into the box over the defense’s head, Rihoy again was first to react to drill the ball home with less than ten minutes remaining. The game was heading for a replay when Cristian burst through but as his shot came back off of the frame of the goal, the old competition’s first venture into the Channel Islands was consigned to the history books and a Tuesday night replay at the SCT…

THE OPPOSITION
DAVE RIHOY FORWARD Dave is considered by many as one of the best players in the Channel Islands over the last few years. A diminutive pacy forward who has had to overcome serious injury on several occasions. A knee injury denied him the opportunity of being involved in arguably Guernsey’s finest period, when they represented the England Amateur team in the UEFA Regions Cup in Croatia in 2010. DOMINIC HEAUME FORWARD Midfielder or forward for any occasion, regular star performer and a name guaranteed to be on the Guernsey FC team-sheet whenever he is available, which is near-on every single game. Across the first two successful seasons, he played in all but four of the 96 matches and is comfortably clear of the rest of his team-mates in the appearances list. ROBBIE LEGG FORWARD Teenager with a prolific goalscoring record in local youth football. Made his GFC debut against Molesey in November

2015 and got his first goal against Whyteleafe the following March, making him the club’s youngest ever scorer. Went on to net twice more during the 201516 run-in, including his first goal at Footes Lane. CRAIG YOUNG FORWARD A forward with tremendous vision and creativity, who was in and out of the Guernsey FC set-up various times in the club’s first three successful seasons. There was good news for Tony Vance when Young committed to playing for GFC for the 2014/15 season. And he has been a regular ever since. When he is available, he starts. MARC MCGRATH FORWARD Has been one of the most lethal finishers in Guernsey for over a decade. The quick striker decided to commit to Guernsey FC fulltime ahead of the 2013-14 season, after featuring in the run-in at the end of 2012-13 and scoring some crucial goals.
KYLE SMITH FORWARD A youngster who only turned 16 in the final days of the 2012/13 season and made his Guernsey FC debut at Corinthian Casuals, from the bench in the Ryman Division One South victory at the start of the following campaign. He is a highly promising striker who plays his local football for Northerners. Still very young and has time to make an impact for GFC. GLENN DYER FORWARD A tricky winger/forward who will give defenders nightmares on either flank or down the middle. Has also often filled in at left-back if we’ve been short of fit defenders. Often given a free role to look for the ball and run at defences, elusive with extreme pace and a thunderous shot. Not bad at dead-ball situations either.

FROM THE COMMENTARY BOX
FROM THE
COMMENTARY BOX At Saturday’s first game, our very own Mike Green joined BBC RADIO GUERNSEY’s match commentator SIMON DE LA RUE in the commentary box... In the 145-year history of the FA Cup, only two clubs have been drawn to play in a match which would require them to leave the UK. The first was Dover Athletic. The second was Thamesmead Town. Only one of these clubs went on to make FA Cup history.
September showdown, in front of a packed Garenne Stand, against Chris Kinnear’s men of Kent. But it never happened. The FA’s official kick-off time was required to be 1.00pm. That clashed with a Guernsey Rugby Football Club fixture. (Footes Lane has long been an athletics and
Lewes, where Guernsey lost 2-1. It’s fair to say that when this year’s draw gave Guernsey a home tie with Thamesmead, we didn’t count any chickens. But whereas Dover appeared to protect their competitive advantage at all costs, The Mead (from Mr Bowden-Brown down) appeared
I distinctly recall the excitement of Guernsey FC’s FA Cup adventure in 2013/14. Bringing the world’s most romanticised, domestic football competition to the island was one of the founding motivations that precipitated the club’s formation two years earlier. Now, with eligibility earned after the statutory two full seasons of league football, we prayed for a home draw. The first disappointment was to be drawn away to Crawley Down Gatwick in the preliminary round. The second was to discover that even if successful, the Green Lions would be playing another away match in the first qualifying round. But hope of the island hosting FA Cup football was rekindled by two victories in those matches. Crawley Down Gatwick were beaten 3-1 and then a late, late penalty from hat-trick hero Ross Allen saw off Hastings 3-2. And then the draw for the second qualifying round rewarded Guernsey with an historic home match. The island’s football fans licked their sunburnt lips in anticipation of a late-

rugby venue.) Secretary Mark Le Tissier and others attempted to negotiate with Dover Athletic for an alternative kick-off time but in the end, the English club exercised their right, under the unique rules set down by the FA as part of Guernsey FC’s acceptance into the competition, to have the match played at a neutral venue. So fans of both clubs travelled to Lancing in Sussex, where they saw Guernsey succumb to a 3-2 defeat. Last season, Guernsey were again drawn away - this time against Phoenix Sports - where Tony Vance’s men earned a replay. Unfortunately, those unique rules came in again, and that replay was at another neutral venue,
to embrace the opportunity to be part of something special. Pennants were printed. Kind words were spoken. Cross-club friendships were forged. And after all the hullabaloo had settled down, one Paul Vines took the opportunity to become the first football player ever to score an FA Cup goal outside the UK – an opportunity denied to the players representing Dover Athletic back in 2013. The two clubs on show tonight will forever be linked by FA Cup history. May the best team on the night progress. Simon De La Rue BBC Radio Guernsey Match Reporter
