THE MANAGER

STEVE HOUSHAM May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Hull City to the Eon Visual Media Stadium this afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. To say results do not look good so far during this pre-season campaign is probably an understatement! But as I have said, pre-season is all about fitness and experimenting. It’s about getting mistakes and bad habits out of the way. We are looking to get the young lads as many senior games as we can so they get prepared for the physical sides we face. This afternoon’s match is another tough, but good, test against Hull City. We’re looking for the players to step up the minutes they play as the season draws closer. We will hopefully announce some more signings this week, but its a waiting game, as we must keep to budget. Pre-season is not a great spectacle for you the fans, with player rotation all the time, but myself and Darryn are working hard to make sure everything is right for the big kick-off. THE OWNERS

STEVE & EMAN FORSTER Welcome back to the Eon Visual Media Stadium, I hope we enjoy a great game of pre-season football and I welcome everyone from Hull City who have made the journey.

We are really excited about the forthcoming Vanarama National League North season. We are again going to be playing in a very competitive league. As usual, the champions will gain automatic promotion, but there will now be six play-off places to play for. This should ensure that the season is kept alive right until the last game. Like all of you, we are hoping this season for a cup run this season. Let us hope the draw is kind to us. Steve Housham is doing a great job mixing youth and experience with his new signings and we are sure that we will have a squad that is capable of competing well. We need to make the Eon Visual Media Stadium our “friendly fortress” this season. The club gained a tremendous amount of praise from visiting fans last season. Indeed, we came seventh in a vote on the

favourite National League grounds. The club’s volunteers have been awesome this close season. They have put in a tremendous amount of work and the ground is looking fantastic. The club has invested in a high maintenance programme over the summer to improve the pitch to keep to our very high playing standard that we are known for. We would like to thank our sponsors, our volunteers and the management team, all of whom have worked so hard over summer break. Without their efforts the club would not be anything like this standard. Now it is over to Housh and Stampy, their back-room team and the players and, of course, our loyal supporters, to make the coming season a great experience. With our team providing youth, enthusiasm, team work and having Housh and Stampy at the helm we should see some fantastic matches. Keep supporting this great community club and help to put North Ferriby on the map once again. Steve & Eman Forster Club Owners

HULL CITY U23

Hull City’s Under-23s begin their preseason schedule this afternoon as they build-up their preparations for the 2017/18 campaign. After returning from a training camp in Spain, the Under-23s will take on Bridlington Town at Queensgate on Saturday 29th July (KO 3pm), before taking on Shaw Lane AFC on Wednesday 2nd August (KO 7.45pm). The Tigers will then round off their preparations for the new season with a trip to Wales to face Aberystwyth Town - who used to be managed by former Tigers Academy manager Tony Pennock - on Sunday 6th August (KO 2pm). The Tigers will be looking to retain the Billy Bly Memorial Trophy they won last year with a

2-0 victory over Steve Housham’s side courtesy of goals from Greg Olley and Greg Luer. The Tigers’ Development Squad ended the season as runners up in the Professional Development League following a 3-1 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday in the Play-Off Final at Hillsborough. Just two points separated the two sides during the regular season, with the Owls finishing ahead of the Tigers to earn home advantage for the Final. The game will be Ferriby’s sixth in pre-season, with the Villagers playing Cleethorpes Town, Winterton Rangers, FC Halifax Town, Rotherham United, before rounding off their preparations away at Frickley Athletic.

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

STEVE HOUSHAM The Villagers programme gets the low-down on the season ahead and the frustrations of pre-season from the man at the helm Steve Housham.

12

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

FEATURE INTERVIEW

There has been a great turnout for pre-season training and all the lads are looking in great shape! Me and Stampy have been non-stop working since the final whistle of last season to make sure we have a squad which will compete in what is going to be a tough league. I know it must be frustrating for the fans, who are wanting to know who is coming in and who is leaving, but we can say that everyone was offered a deal for this season, after the fantastic effort by last season’s squad in the National League. I know several players have departed for more money and full-time contracts, but that’s expected in any level of the game. Sadly, we’re not in a position to match

or beat the big club’s deals, so we play the waiting game. We’re looking out for players who are young and hungry for games and have a point to prove at this level. We have a busy pre-season schedule, but this allows us, as a team, to gel. It also ensures we can run the rule over trial players (new and old) and be fully prepared for the season ahead. This time last season we only had three players! We’ve got a solid foundation already and I’m looking forward to adding to that. I hope to see you all at the pre-season games! THE ACADEMY

RICHARD BELL

We sat down with Richard Bell to divulge all the latest news on the Academy front and who might make the step to Steve Housham’s first-team this upcoming season. My role over the last couple of seasons has been to create a pathway between youth and men’s football. Traditionally lads play through to U16/U18 level and then drift away into further education, jobs and other local league teams and we lose some very talented lads. The base of this team moved from under-16 and into under-18 Hull Boys League where we won the league title in the first season. When Paul Sarel decided to move on from the ‘Mens Reserves’ team, Pete Richardson and I were offered to take the reserves slot the following season under the ‘Academy’ tag and ‘blood’ the lads into the Mens County Premier League rather than stay another season in Hull Boys Sunday League. We knew it would be tough to take a group of 17-year-olds into a league at that level especially adapting to the physical aspects. However we did great and finished a respectable 5th and played the Senior Cup fixtures and went all the way to the final which was an achievement itself. We knew that first season was going to be a steep learning curve and if we adapted and took on board the lessons we learned then we would be stronger and more competitive the following season. This was borne out where 14

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

we exceeded expectations by winning the County Premier league – which is a fantastic achievement with such a young squad. Last year was great not just to win the County Premier title in the way we did but to see all of the lads kick on mature, improve and have the courage to keep playing good football and pull together when things weren’t always ‘going our way’. They are a really good group who get on well and understand what we are trying to do to help them individually and collectively. In terms of players who might step to the first-team this year: Kojo is here for another year at Hull Uni so I think he may possibly be involved again. Tom and George are moving away to Uni so probably won’t feature for us, but they should play to a good level where they are moving to. However we have a few other lads who have the ability to do well, we think if they continue to improve this season they will be pushing to step up. It’s a cycle we need to keep going every season, those three have been the break through and credit to Steve and Darryn for having the confidence in them all. Richard Bell Youth Development

WHO WAS BILLY BLY?

WHO WAS

BILLY BLY?

Billy Bly was born on 15th May, 1920 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. He made his debut for Hull City in April 1939 in a 2-0 win against Rotherham. During the war, Bly guested for Dumbarton and Hamilton Academicals between 1942 and 1943. His career started in earnest in August 1946 when he played for Hull City against Lincoln City. He remained the Tigers’ first-choice keeper until his retirement in 1960. He was reputed to be the most injured footballer in the game at that time and missed a total of roughly six years through a multiplicity of injuries, including 14 fractures. Despite that, he still made 456 first-team appearances for City. City’s on-field fortunes seemed to follow the

16

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

ebb and flow of Bly’s injuries. In those seasons when he played a high number of games the side did well. Conversely, when he was out of the side for lengthy spells they struggled. Bly was a star in the Club’s famous 1949 FA Cup run. The Tigers faced Manchester United at Boothferry Park. Bly suffered a broken nose, was concussed, but played on. Two years after retiring, he was persuaded to have a short spell with Weymouth. He eventually came to North Ferriby as a coach a committee member. Billy Bly’s contribution to both clubs is remembered in the annual pre-season Billy Bly Memorial Trophy fixture between Hull City and North Ferriby. It is a fitting tribute to a man who gave much too both clubs.

MAN OF THE

MATCH Ahmed ELMOHAMADY

Saturday 16 July 2016 | Eon Visual Media Stadium | Attendance: 1473 This was an entertaining game especially in the first-half. Hull fielded their Development team against a Ferriby side that contained a number of trailists. Both sides went close early-on, with Ferriby’s Ryan Kendall drawing a save from keeper Will Mannion, before Connor Oliver fired narrowly wide of a post. Greg Luer latched on to a defensive error and raced towards the Ferriby goal but keeper Rory Watson reacted quickly to come out and smother Luer’s shot. Both teams looked to get forward, but chances were at a premium. Ferriby’s Mark Gray headed wide at the far post, before Taron Hare did well to head a Hull shot off-the line. Kendall and Oliver went close for Ferriby and Ahmed Elmohamady shot wide of the Ferriby goal. City took the lead after 38 minutes. Elmohamady’s cross from the right was knocked home at the near post by Greg Olley. City clinched the game after 48 minutes. Luer capitalised on a weak back-header to chip substitute keeper Craig Ellison. The regular second-half substitutions by both teams disrupted the flow of the game and there were few meaningful goal attempts, although Mark Gray went close twice for Ferriby. Mark Gray went close twice in a minute for Ferriby, but a goal was not going to come. 18

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

Elmohmamady was man-of-the-match, despite being substituted on the hour. However, he was run close Oliver who produced some solid work in midfield for Ferriby. Ferriby manager Steve Housham commented on the game, saying: “The players have come back down to earth today after such a good performance on Tuesday. The standards Darryn and myself have talked about were not there today. We were a bit carried away after the Grimsby result. “It’s disappointing. Our passing wasn’t there today. Hull were young and hungry and they competed better. Darren and myself learned a lot today and we now need to see how the players react.”

VIEW FROM THE STANDS

VIEW FROM THE STANDS by Jeff Welburn North Ferriby United welcome Hull City’s Under-23s side to the Eon Visual Media Stadium, hoping to build-up some more momentum heading into the season. While results in pre-season haven’t been the best - the 6-0 defeat to Scunthorpe United looking alarming on paper. However, factor in the amount of players that have come and gone at the club, it was always going to be a difficult pre-season. Also factor in a strong Scunny side, but the shoots of promise were clear in spells throughout the game - particularly in the opening exchanges. It was always going to be difficult for manager Steve Housham, with so many players departing the Villagers and he found himself in a similar unenviable situation to last season. However Housham’s infectious spirit gives Ferriby fans hope for next season. It is always going to be hard to judge what sort of team Ferriby have with so many new faces, so I wouldn’t read to much into recent results. The spine of Ferriby’s team has been effectively ripped out of the club following relegation. Housham has already committed to supporting the youth system and this campaign may be the one for some of the youth players to make a breakthrough into the first-team ranks. Towards the back end of last season, a number of Academy prospects were playing senior football 22

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

and that highlights the trust and belief Housham has in the setup. Whilst it still is a big ask for the young players to play regular Conference North football, the experience it will bring will put them in good stead for there careers. It may have been all well and good playing a full-strength Hull City squad, but the fact of the matter is, it actually may be a more realistic barometer of where Ferriby are at playing the Under-23s side. Pre-season is all about match fitness, as Housham has said on numerous occasions, so hopefully this afternoon’s game will be a good spectacle. Jeff Welburn North Ferriby United Supporter
