CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Paul

BOWDEN-BROWN May I sincerely welcome the directors, officials, players and supporters from Aveley FC to our home Sporting Club Thamesmead on this Bank Holiday Monday, and after the match they enjoy some refreshments before having a safe journey home.

Guernsey about 40 minutes later, where we were met at the airport by volunteer drivers and taken to our hotel.

I would also welcome all of our community season ticket holders, and apologise for those that were unable to watch our FA Cup replay against Guernsey in Tuesday but unfortunately its FA rules state all must pay on the day.

I have arranged to treat our squad and management to an evening meal at the hotel as all our other costs had been met by Guernsey FC - part of the rules for allowing them to play on the mainland. The meal was great and it was very honouring to see my squad of players and management around a table relaxing something you do not normally see.

Well as I have mentioned the replay I should take some time and just cover our trip to Guernsey last Saturday for those that would not have read our replay programme. A party of 28 of us left Gatwick Airport at 5:15 on the Friday evening, landing in

I went to bed at the time England ladies hockey team were winning the gold medal, anyway after a good rest we met after a hearty breakfast to go to the ground which was situated only half a mile away from the hotel. So as the weather was great the squad

walked there but due to my gammy leg I hitched a ride with the kit man in the mini bus. When we arrived at the ground there was a very warm welcome for all of us and the stands were nearly full even though it was only 11:30 and kick off was at 1 o’clock. Myself and the travelling officials from the club were invited to join Guernsey at lunch before the match. The kick-off came and went with Thamesmead’s being the stronger in the first-half and going in 2-0 to the good. But the second-half was a totally different matter and at 90 minutes it was 2-2 so a replay on Tuesday night. Tuesday came and the Guernsey team arrived at SCT rather late but the kick off remained at 7:45, before the match the club entertained the travelling directors of Guernsey and other

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

officials to a dinner. The replay was played at a great pace and went to extra time and then penalties which we won 4-2 and to be honest I thought it a fair result but be assured I had my doubts when the penalties came but my heart lifted when the Greywood End was chosen for the penalty shoot-out Greywood is my company and the clubs main sponsor. Finally speaking as the chairman I have nothing but admiration for the organisation, professionalism and friendship that was given by everyone associated with Guernsey FC home and away. From the moment we landed and were met by the volunteer drivers that picked the visiting party up at the airport and took us to the hotel and then arranged to pick us up to take us to the ground on the morning of the match. When we arrived at the ground we certainly received the red carpet treatment and I personally hope it will not be too long before Guernsey play in their own ground fully owned by the club rather as now ground sharing with a rugby club. Now on the home fronts, our academy intake is getting near the required level to operate efficiently but anyone thinking of joining there are still places so please make contact to the club ask for Ian or Gary.

see Gary working with the local Police by offering coaching to those youngsters that need our support, trying to keep them off the street by giving them something to do. This will work in conjunction of our schools initiative that is in place. At this time all these initiatives confirm our commitment to our local community, if there is an initiative you would like us to consider please make contact direct with myself and be assured I will consider all. Now I must say something about the first-team, here we are with a new manager and a new squad sitting unbeaten in the Ryman North and through the first preliminary round of the FA Cup, some achievement if you look back at our pre-season results, but as I always say pre-season is as it states and is used to build a squad. Yes be assured we are not there yet but we are certainly on the right path so we owe Tommy and his management a very big thank you for their achievement to date so long may it continue. Now we always know a game against today’s opponents is always hard so let’s enjoy a good football match, and hope our winning streak continues. Now let’s enjoy the match! MANAGER’S NOTES

Tommy

WARRILOW Good afternoon everyone and thanks for joining us this Bank Holiday Monday for the visit of our near neighbours Aveley, who have braved the holiday traffic to get across the bridge to be with us. To all the players, officials and supporters who have made the trip, welcome… People definitely got value for money both home and away against Guernsey. Both teams rightly earned all their plaudits and respective pay packets in the two ties, but I think we deserved the replay win. They were better than us in the first-half – we were disorganised – we readdressed things at half-time and I thought that we were dominant in the second-half and in extra time and

deserved the win. We missed quite a few chances in the replay and when you do that you hope that it doesn’t come back and bite you! I’m on record as saying that I thought the tie should have been over at half-time in the first game on Guernsey – we didn’t do it and it nearly cost us. I’m sure that their gaffer felt the same and they could have nicked it Saturday, but after a shaky start in the replay, we got ourselves organised and we finished very, very strongly on the front foot creating loads of chances with loads of energy down the flanks but unfortunately we had to win the tie on penalties.

I must thank everyone connected with Guernsey FC for a great trip – we really were well looked after throughout and I’ve never seen a side two-nil down at home be applauded off by a whole stand of fans as they left the pitch at half-time as they were in the first game. That just doesn’t happen – I was gobsmacked – what reaction do they get if they’re two-nil up? I was asked why three of our five penalties against Guernsey were taken by the subs. Wish I could claim that that was part of a plan but sadly I can’t! Cesc, five minutes into extra time – BANG calf! I thought brilliant! Kinchy we all know what he’s like – he plays sometime like he’s injured anyway and we knew he was struggling.

“I’ve never seen a side two-nil down at home be applauded off by a whole stand as they left the pitch” Tommy on the half-time score in Guernsey.

MANAGER’S NOTES

All the boys were sore going into the weekend, and I wish I could have given them Thursday off as they needed a rest, but they’re young (well most of the anyway) and I’d happily swap with them anyday – I’d love to be where they are and playing again. And you know, that’s the key – enjoy playing! You can have bad games and good games but I hope that they all enjoy it and those that can push on to bigger and better things and hopefully we can all do it together! I was annoyed with the aura around the club pre-season as we bought some good quality teams down to try and get some revenue for the club. I think some people forgot that and we had some very good results against three very good sides, but that’s pre-season. We’ve started our league games so far with two good half performances

– we were a bit shaky first-half against Heybridge but dominated the second-half. And it was the same at Thurrock where we were a lot better and got our just rewards as they didn’t take their chances in the first-half. Make no mistake – we’ve been given two very tough games over this Bank Holiday weekend. We went to Brentwood on Saturday the result of which I don’t know due to printer constraints before facing Aveley this afternoon. It’s important that we finish today on a positive note as we reflect back on the opening weeks. We’re not in after today until Thursday and I think it’s important that we keep rolling over. In truth, if we’d have won the first tie against Guernsey, I was going to give the boys last Tuesday off, but we got them in on Thursday to work on set pieces as one thing the replay showed was that we’ve got to get our runs right. The delivery is now excellent, but if the runs

aren’t right… I’m more positive by each performance up to the weekend (these notes had to be written before our trip to Brentwood because of printing deadlines) but I want to win games properly! We’ve got a big week ahead of course as we face Chertsey Town here in the next round of the FA Cup on Saturday. I know nothing about Chertsey – they used to be a good footballing side to go and play I remember years ago, but rest assured that we’ll be showing them the same respect as we would show an Ebbsfleet United or a team like that. That though is in the future – today we’ve three Ryman League points to play for, so please get behind the boys and we’ll see you all after the game in the bar for a chat, Enjoy the game! Welcome to today’s game where we take on Aveley.

On the injury front there’s nothing new to report…

THE UNDER-21S

THE

UNDER-21s I’m struggling where to begin with today’s notes... What a fantastic week we’ve had! I for one, feel so proud to be associated and to play small part in our great club. The first team’s achievement in the FA cup matches with Guernsey will without doubt go down in history of the world’s greatest Cup competition. I would go as far as saying it’s the most memorable week of my footballing career! And to be in the next round of the FA Cup next weekend is a great achievement for the players/staff and everyone involved at the club. I would like to thank the chairman, Docks and the gaffer for letting me be part of such a great occasion. Back down to earth now. Our under-21s season is nearly upon us with a home tie tomorrow night - Tuesday - with a home game against AFC Sudbury. We’ve had a very productive pre season all in all. The lads now are chomping at the bit to get started now as am I. We’ve got a great bunch of lads

10

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

who with a bit of decent coaching and senior experience in games I’ve got no doubt we will see a few lads progress this year into our first- team. Once again that’s our main aim at the twenty-ones this season - to progress, develop and nurture future first-team players. As for the academy things are moving on nicely over the preseason. Myself and Docks have managed to get more numbers in week by week. The academy lads are very keen to learn and to be honest they’re a pleasure to coach. Hopefully we’ll see as many progress if not more to senior level as we had last season. It’s a tough ask but that’s the standards we set ourselves and our benchmarks to progress. Well hopefully see a few of you tomorrow night as all season ticket holders are free entry. Let’s all get behind the boys! Gary Ryan Under-21s Manager

SECRETARY’S COLUMN

FROM THE

SECRETARY’S DESK

Good afternoon everyone welcome to SCT for today’s Ryman League match against Aveley, we hope that you enjoy your brief stay with us. Last week saw us play two FA Cup matches against Guernsey FC from the Ryman South Division. Both were close games with us finally going through for a home tie against Chertsey on the 3rd September having won Tuesday nights replay on penalties. Both sides were locked at a 1-1 draw after normal play and extra time!

Our visit to Guernsey last Saturday was a pleasurable one, our hosts made us feel very welcome, the set up they have over there is marvellous and they are in a position to progress through the football pyramid. Our second-half performance on Tuesday was in my opinion the best we have played so far this season, and realistically we should have had the game sewn up within normal playing time, missing a couple of chances that should have been taken.

Our visitors today Aveley will as always offer us a competitive game, they will be hard working and well organised and at this time of the season will have a strong side. Aveley are a club that discover talented players but during the season they seem to be moving to other clubs with higher wage structures. Anyway enjoy today’s game. Dave Joy Club Secretary

Attentions turn back to the Ryman League after a titanic two-leg FA Cup triumph over Guernsey. The match went the full distance with Thamesmead prevailing 4-2 on penalties. The result means the Mead are now four games unbeaten and come into this clash hoping to extend that run against an Aveley side recently knocked out of the cup at the hands of AFC Hornchurch.

AVELEY

In the league Aveley started their campaign well with a thumping 5-2 win at home to Ware, however any early season optimism was dealt a blow then they was on the end of a 6-2 demolition by Phoenix Sports.

The Mead face five home games on the trot in all competitions and the club will be hoping home advantage can see them on the end of more positive results.

THE OPPOSITION

CLUB HISTORY Aveley football club was formed in 1927 and played in local leagues until 1939. Club activities were then suspended during the war years 1939/45. In 1946 the club was reformed and joined the Thurrock Combination. Aveley twice won the Essex Junior Cup, firstly in 1948, then retaining it the following year. Aveley gained Senior League status in season 1949/50 and were elected into the London League, Division One. They were Division Champions in the 1951/52 season. In the same season they moved from Lodge Meadow to their present ground, Mill Field, and were promptly nicknamed The Millers. In season 1954/55 they were Division Champions once again which was followed by election to The Delphian League in 1955/56. They competed in this league until 1962/63 with little success. 1963/64 saw Millers join the Athenian League. Full membership of the Football Association was granted in 1964/65. Season 1970/71 was probably the clubs most successful one. The 1989/90 campaign was a memorable one for The Millers. Promotion back to Division One was gained with a tremendous end of season run-in to finish second to Heybridge Swifts by two points.

A roller-coaster season 2001/02 saw the club finish third behind Hornchurch and champions Croydon Athletic and gain promotion to Division 1 North. The 2003/04 campaign saw the club eventually finish in 14th place. Millers matched the previous season’s performance and reached the final of the Essex Senior Cup. 2004/05 was a disappointing one for Millers first season in the Southern League, the club finishing in 15th place. Compensation however, came in the form of the Essex Thames-Side Challenge Trophy. Another difficult season followed, on and off the pitch. Millers ended the season with their third manager, Steve Browne, steering them just clear of the relegation places. A poor League season in 2006/07 was again compensated for by winning the Essex Thames-Side Challenge Trophy for the second time in three seasons. After a disappointing start to the 2007/08 campaign, November saw the arrival of Rod Stringer as Manager, and fortunes turned with the Millers putting a string of impressive results together to finish the season in MidTable. 2008/09 saw the foundations that were laid the previous season, bare its fruit as the Ryman League Division One North Championship was won on the last day of the season in dramatic fashion at East Thurrock United. In a tense finish to the season,

Millers created a club record of 11 straight away league wins, and Rod Stringer was duly judged as the Manager of the Season for the Division. 2009/10 our first in the Isthmian Premier Division saw a great finish to the season, with 12 wins from the last 14 games, taking us into 3rd position. During the close season Rod Stringer departed for Braintree Town, taking with him his management team, and the whole playing squad. A difficult season was endured with a last day 3-2 win at Hastings being significant as the club survived relegation. 2011/12 was much of the same, and relegation was confirmed after a poor season. Justin Gardner took over the reins in February of 2012, and has this season assembled a strong playing squad that is currently challenging for an immediate return to the Premier Division. 2012/13 was a successful season with the team occupying a play off positions all season. The most significant result of the 2013/14 season was the news in March that after many years of trying, the Club has finally achieved planning for new state of the art facilities. After a protracted period of negotiations. work commenced on the new stadium build in July 2016, and it is hoped that the new premises will be occupational for the start of the 2017/18 campaign.

ACADEMY MATTERS

ACADEMY MATTERS

Good afternoon and may I take this opportunity in giving a warm welcome from myself and the academy lads to Aveley FC. The academy lads have been working really hard on their fitness levels, although it has been very hard to carry out shape work due to players being on holiday and so forth. Both myself and under-21 manager Gary Ryan are going back to basics with the lads

18

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

,due to the limited footballing knowledge that they have had in their young careers so far, but we have been delighted with their response to training and the hunger and desire all the players have shown. A couple of our second year scholars will soon be given the opportunity to train with our under-21 side due to their efforts in training and in time , will be nurtured into the side.

It really is FA Cup week for the club next week as after the first-team host Chertsey Town on Saturday, we have an FA Youth Cup tie next Monday (September 5th) against Folkestone Invicta here at Bayliss Avenue (with a 7:45pm kick off) so all the players are focused on this tie, so all in all exciting times ahead! MAN OF THE MATCH

MAN OF THE

MATCH AWARD

We’re delighted that Erica Cooper and her daughter Charlotte are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award again this season. Throughout the 2016/17 season, Thamesmead Town will once again be presenting the Mead Man of the Match award after each home game. HOW AFRICA BOYCOTTED THE 1966 WORLD CUP

The 1966 World Cup is the only World Cup to have been boycotted by an entire continent. But it is better known for England’s victory, a controversial goal in the final and the glorious displays of both Eusebio and North Korea. BBC Focus on Africa’s Piers Edwards takes up the story of a little-known boycott that changed football’s greatest competition forever. Ghana’s Osei Kofi was once described as being the equal of the legendary George Best by Gordon Banks, a World Cup winner in 1966. Given the Northern Irishman’s status as one of football’s greatest ever players, that was some claim. But the odds are you’ve never heard of Kofi, who put four goals past Banks when they met in two club friendlies.

This would largely be because a player nicknamed “One Man Symphony Orchestra” or, less poetically, “Wizard Dribbler” never got to unfurl his wing play at a World Cup. He was denied the chance when Africa dramatically boycotted the 1966 finals.

‘Black Stars’ proper in those days,” Kofi, now a church minister, told the BBC in the Ghanaian capital, Accra. “We had the men, those who were strong and those who were intelligent. That’s why we could have got to the World Cup at any given time.”

At the time, Ghana’s “Black Stars” were back-to-back African champions, having won in 1963 and 1965. “We had the

But at the peak of their powers, the “Black Stars” were pushed down a black hole. In January 1964, Fifa decided that the line-up for the 16-team finals would include 10 teams from Europe, including hosts England, four from Latin America and one from the Central American and Caribbean region. That left just one place to be fought for by three continents: Africa,

Based in Cairo, Caf became the world’s first sporting organisation to expel South Africa as a result of the government’s apartheid policy, in 1960. “As soon as an African country became independent, it joined the United Nations and then Caf - there was no other organisation,” recalls Fikrou Kidane, a long-term colleague of Tessema, who died in 1987. Football historian Alan Tomlinson says: “Right from the very beginning, this was a story about cultural politics in the post-colonial period.” Having initially suspended South Africa a year after Caf, Fifa then readmitted the

also a member of Fifa’s Executive Committee, was crying foul. “Registering strong objection to unfair World Cup arrangement for AfroAsian countries STOP,” he complained in a telegram to Fifa. Djan’s bullish tone stemmed from Kwame Nkrumah, the president of Ghana which had become, in 1957, the first sub-Saharan nation to achieve independence. Nkrumah wanted to use football to unite Africa and had told his appointee Djan to do whatever was necessary to put African football on the world map. The late Djan was also a member of

standard of play had significantly improved in the preceding years. Then they pointed out that the costs of arranging a play-off between Africa’s top teams and their counterparts from Asia and Oceania were “onerously” expensive. Then there was the politics - for the situation was complicated by Caf’s bitter row with Fifa over apartheid South Africa. Following its founding in 1957, Caf was the only pan-African organisation in existence - preceding the creation of what is today the African Union by six years - meaning that, on the South Africa issue at least, it assumed a geopolitical role.

country in 1963, in part because of its pledge to send an all-white team to the 1966 World Cup and an all-black one to the 1970 finals. “The first time I encountered that solution, I just laughed,” said Tomlinson, who is currently working on a biography of then Fifa President Stanley Rous. “But in terms of a form of gradualism, which fitted a model of development, Rous actually believed that could happen. He truly believed that football could bring people of different kinds together.” For the 1966 World Cup, Fifa placed South Africa - a pariah state on its continent - in an Asian qualifying

group in order to avoid playing an African rival but the designated African/Asian/Oceania play-off group meant a meeting could happen. ”That was not acceptable and complicated things for sure,” said Kidane, who attended Fifa congresses in the 1960s as an Ethiopian delegate.

dignity of Africa.” Despite being denied his shot at the limelight, Osei Kofi professes to have no bitterness. “We should have regretted not playing in the World Cup but it was a cheat,” he said. “It was not fair. And it hurt Fifa for Africa to do this.”

a best-ever third, Eusebio was effectively African. All four were born in Mozambique, which was then a Portuguese colony. With minnows punching above their weight and an “African” finishing as the tournament’s top scorer, the winds of change were blowing through the World Cup.

In July 1964, Caf decided to boycott the 1966 World Cup unless Africa was given a place of its own. With only Egypt having ever played at a World Cup before, back in 1934, this was no small gesture. Fifa, though, was not playing ball.

Many feel differently. “I don’t know any of us who will say he didn’t regret it,” Kofi Pare, another Ghana international in the 1960s, told the BBC. “After we had been watching the World Cup, we knew we could have done better. I think we were one of the greatest teams. If we had played at the World Cup, we would have gone to the final - or won it - honestly.”

Fifa finally reacted. Two years after the finals, it unanimously voted to give Africa a World Cup place all of its own. Asia got one too. The boycott had worked. “I think it was absolutely pivotal,” says football historian Tomlinson. “If Fifa had proved obstructionist about that, world football might have gone in a different direction.”

Over 100 teams in Africa, Asia and Oceania contested the last World Cup qualifiers but for 1966, there were just two. A meticulously-prepared North Korea side thumped Australia 9-2 to secure a major propagandist boost for their government and reach their first finals, which they then lit up. They stunned Italy before taking a 3-0 lead against Portugal in the quarter-finals - only for Eusebio to answer with four goals in an unforgettable 5-3 win.

Today, Africa has five places at the 32-team World Cup and briefly, when South Africa became the first African country to host in 2010, once had six. It still wants more. But one goal has been more than achieved.

“As the decisions of the Organising Committee are final, I do not think that for the prestige of Fifa it would be a good solution to alter the decisions even if some of Tessema’s arguments appear reasonable,” Fifa Secretary General Helmut Kaser wrote to Rous in 1964. So in October 1964, on a weekend when Caf successfully lobbied for another Fifa suspension for South Africa, Africa carried out its threat - with its 15 then-eligible teams all pulling out. “It was not a difficult decision,” said Kidane, who now advises the current Caf president. “It was a matter of prestige. Most of the continent was fighting for its own independence and Caf had to defend the interest and

Since boycotting the 1966 edition, Africa has been present at every World Cup. So the legacy of Djan and Tessema lives on as Roger Milla, Asamoah Gyan et al continue the theme of Africa’s greatest World Cup strikers - this time on the pitch.
