THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

STEVE HOUSHAM May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of FC Halifax Town to the Eon Visual Media Stadium, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Pre-season, as always, seems to take longer then the football season itself! But it has got to be done, we have had a lot of games with both positives and negatives. The Leeds United game was not only great for the players, who went out and played against Championship and international quality players, but also great for the club to have a great turnout of fans. On the pitch, I thought the players acquitted themselves well, as we set up to be difficult to break down and work hard when not in possession. I think keeping the scoreline down was a credit to the players. We then continued to blood the youngsters into men’s football at Barton and again they acquitted themselves well, with a hard fought 1-1 draw. Next up was a Hull City Under-23’s squad, in what was another good test. I was slightly disappointed in the way we started, though. In the Leeds game, we seemed to be well up for it, but against Hull, we were a bit slow. That could be down to the amount of games we have been playing in pre-season, with it taking its toll on the players. But that’s what pre-season is all about

because one game you play in front of a big crowd and energy levels are high from that and then you could be in front of a smaller crowd and it is hard to get up for it. That’s what we stressed to the players at halftime and in the second half we came out with more of a buzz about us. In the end we won 3-1 and a claimed the Billy Bly trophy. It did, however, come at a cost with a couple of lads taking knocks. We will address that situation quickly and hopefully none are too serious Thank you again for your support during this hard part of the season, but it’s not long to go now until the big kick-off! Up the Villagers! Steve Housham First-Team Manager NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

THE OWNERS

THE OWNERS

STEVE & EMAN FORSTER Welcome back to the Eon Visual Media Stadium, I hope we enjoy a great game of pre-season football and I welcome everyone from FC Halifax Town who have made the journey.

We are really excited about the forthcoming Vanarama National League North season. We are again going to be playing in a very competitive league. As usual, the champions will gain automatic promotion, but there will now be six play-off places to play for. This should ensure that the season is kept alive right until the last game. Like all of you, we are hoping this season for a cup run this season. Let us hope the draw is kind to us. Steve Housham is doing a great job mixing youth and experience with his new signings and we are sure that we will have a squad that is capable of competing well. We need to make the Eon Visual Media Stadium our “friendly fortress” this season. The club gained a tremendous amount of praise from visiting fans last season. Indeed, we came seventh in a vote on the

favourite National League grounds. The club’s volunteers have been awesome this close season. They have put in a tremendous amount of work and the ground is looking fantastic. The club has invested in a high maintenance programme over the summer to improve the pitch to keep to our very high playing standard that we are known for. We would like to thank our sponsors, our volunteers and the management team, all of whom have worked so hard over summer break. Without their efforts the club would not be anything like this standard. Now it is over to Housh and Stampy, their back-room team and the players and, of course, our loyal supporters, to make the coming season a great experience. With our team providing youth, enthusiasm, team work and having Housh and Stampy at the helm we should see some fantastic matches. Keep supporting this great community club and help to put North Ferriby on the map once again. Steve & Eman Forster Club Owners

FC HALIFAX TOWN

Billy Heath left North Ferriby United for FC Halifax Town, as the two club swapped places in the National League and National League North respectively. Now, the same is happening again, with Halifax passing Ferriby on their way to the National League. Heath decided to leave Ferriby for pastures new following promotion in the 2015-16 season and, along with a large contingent of Ferriby players, has achieved his goal of reaching the National League with Halifax. A dramatic 2-1 extra-time win over Chorley in the play-off final was just rewards for their

superb season and they bounced back to the National League at the first time of asking. Halifax begun their preparations for life in the National League, with a 4-2 away win over Brighouse Town, before a 3-1 win over Gainsborough Trinity. The Shayman tasted defeat against Alfreton Town in a 1-0 loss, but bounced back with a win against Rochdale. North Ferriby extend a warm welcome to all their former players and members of staff and we wish you well for the upcoming season. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

MATTY BROWN

NATHAN HOTTE

Brown is in his third season with the Shaymen after signing for the club on a free transfer from Chester in 2015. After a slow start for the team the central defender became a rock at the back. A former Chester FC captain who was on the youth books at Manchester City.

Hotte is another player who has followed manager Billy Heath from North Ferriby. The midfielder had previously spent four years at Bradford Park Avenue, making 183 appearances. Though primarily a midfielder, Hotte is described as versatile and can fill in at the back or even up front.

THE OPPOSITION

SCOTT GARNER

ADAM MORGAN

SCOTT MCMANUS

Garner had a phenomenal year at the Shay last season, having joined from Lincolnshire club Boston United last season. Garner won Town’s Player’s Player of the Year, Club Award Player of the Year, Official Website Player of the year and Halifax Shayman of the Year at the 2016/17 club awards.

: Joined the Shaymen from Curzon Ashton having started his career with Premier League side Liverpool. Morgan played alongside Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard in a European match against Hearts, and went on to make two further first-team appearances in the Europa League.

Scott McManus is the club’s longest-serving current player having joined in 2011 from FC United of Manchester. After arriving as a central defender, McManus soon made the successful switch over to the left-hand side of defence and has made the position his own.

MATT KOSYLO

JOSH MACDONALD

TOM DENTON

Kosylo’s signing in pre-season was greeted with much excitement by FC Halifax Town fans last season and he certainly lived up to the hype. His energetic and tireless performances have been matched with some fine goals and assists, which have pleased many on the terraces.

MacDonald signed for Halifax in the summer of 2015, from Marske United. A former Middlesbrough trainee, he grew into his first season at the Shay and was a key attacking outlet by the end of it. He is a right-winger with a fantastic ability to beat his man, and can at times play on the left as well.

Denton’s height combines with a strong leap to give him one of the most threatening aerial abilities in the division. Denton gives any team problems with a more direct dimension. His most notable display was on his league debut, netting a hat-trick at Nuneaton Town. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

FORMER VILLAGERS

THE OPPOSITION

FORMER VILLAGERS A number of North Ferriby players left the club to join Billy Heath at FC Halifax Town, we warmly welcome them back to the club. Here is a guide to the returning Villagers.

DANNY CLARKE Starts (sub) - 203 (17) Goals - 31

A versatile player with a great engine who re-joined North Ferriby in January 2015 having left at the end of the 2013/14 season. Has previously played for the likes of Winterton Rangers, Hall Road Rangers, Frickley Athletic and Hull United. Clarke is at home leading the attack or playing in midfield and is a member of our National League North Play-Off Final winning squad as well as a key figure in the FA Trophy glory at Wembley.

TOM NICHOLSON Starts (sub) - 11 (1) Goals - 0

Started his career with a two-year spell at Hull City, before moving to Scarborough, other clubs include Bridlington Town, Brigg and Garforth. Played for England School Boys in two games against a Rest of the World team and the Army/ Navy. Whilst at the Villagers, Nicholson was part of the FA Trophy and Play-Off winning squads, and his experience in such occasions is vital. Joined Billy Heath at Halifax and spent time on loan at Gainsborough last season.

12

FORMER VILLAGERS

DANNY HONE Starts (sub) - 90 (4) Goals - 11

Defender Danny Hone became the fifth player to move from North Ferriby to Halifax, following in the footsteps of manager Billy Heath. The centre-back started his career at Lincoln and spent a season at Gainsborough, before signing for Heath at North Ferriby in 2013, winning the FA Trophy and promotion to the National League.

CONNOR OLIVER Starts (sub) - 30 (5) Goals - 1

Joined North Ferriby United following their promotion to the National League. He started his career with Sunderland through the youth ranks and had a loan spell at Hartlepool United in the 2013-14 season. Oliver joined Blackpool in January 2015 making 10 appearances, before a loan move up the coast to Morecambe in March 2016. A strong tackling player, as well as an excellent passer of the ball, Oliver penned a one-year deal with Halifax following the Villagers’ relegation.

NATHAN HOTTE Starts (sub) - 59 (30) Goals - 4

The midfielder, who can also play in defence, joined North Ferriby for the second time in June 2015 from Bradford Park Avenue. He had played more than 180 times in four years at Park Avenue and has also played for Scarborough Athletic, Bridlington Town, Farsley and Hull City.

FORMER VILLAGERS

LIAM KING Starts (sub) - 200 (5) Goals - 58

Central midfielder King joined the Villagers from Matlock in 2012 and became a key part of Billy Heath’s engine room. He skippered the side as they won the FA Trophy at Wembley in 2015 and then helped Ferriby to National League North promotion through the play-offs last season. Rather than joining Ferriby in nonleague’s top flight under new boss Steve Housham, King has decided to follow former manager Billy Heath to the Shay.

JOSH WILDE Starts (sub) - 106 (1) Goals - 1

A consistent left-back who signed from Gainsborough Trinity in March 2014 after having had two seasons at Gainsborough whom he joined from Buxton FC in the summer of 2012. Was a continually dependably player and was sorely missed when he joined up with Billy Heath at FC Halifax Town.

14

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

FORMER VILLAGERS

TOM DENTOM Starts (sub) - 94 (2) Goals - 44

Joined North Ferriby United prior to the 2014/15 season after a two-year spell with Worksop Town and ended his first season as top scorer. At 6 foot 5 inch, he is probably the tallest centre forward in the league. Denton started his career at Wakefield in the NPL, then signed a contract for Huddersfield Town in 2008. Other clubs include Woking, Cheltenham Town and Mossley. Denton top-scored with 21 goals as Ferriby won promotion to the National League top flight to swap places with the Shaymen.

THE ACADEMY

RICHARD BELL

We sat down with Richard Bell to divulge all the latest news on the Academy front and aims for the upcoming season. We have been promoted up into the Humber Premier League this season, so it’s another step in the right direction and an increase in intensity. We have to prepare well and give it out best shot. We need to recruit several players, as we have lost a few that are going away to university and two or three are starting out in careers away from the area. I think if we can replace the quality and personalities we have lost then we should be alright. But it is about development not just winning trophies, but it’s important that we continue to develop as a squad both individually and collectively. Those that then show the right qualities will likely get their chance to step up to a higher level or maybe even taste some first-team action under Steve Housham.

Steve and Darryn have been great with the young lads and they are enjoying getting a taste of such a high level of football. We train alongside the first-team on a Tuesday night and we have had a few short practice games with them. What’s great, is that it shows our lads those levels they have to achieve in order to progress further. Those Tuesday night sessions give Steve and Darryn the chance to cast their eye over our youngsters and see what may be available moving forward. That’s how we are thinking at the moment, with the ultimate goal for us to see youth team players breaking into the first-team every season. Richard Bell Youth Development

MAN OF THE

MATCH Simon RUSSELL

Saturday 15 July 2017 | Eon Visual Media Stadium | Attendance: 241 Ferriby deservedly won the Billy Bly Memorial Trophy due to an impressive second-half display. Hull City had the majority of the possession during the first-half, but found it difficult to get past Ferriby’s midfield and defence. The visitors were often forced to play square or back, despite Will Annan and Jacob Greaves largely controlling midfield. City went close in the first minute with Ahmed Salam firing wide The Villagers responded with Curtis Bateson and skipper Simon Russell both going close. Russell was impressive throughout the game with his running, tackling and distribution, it was hard to believe that he has had over seven months out of the game through injury. Ferriby managed to create more chances than City and it was Ferriby who opened the scoring after 29 minutes. Mark Gray’s powerful defensive header found Joe Pugh, who powered his way down the right, before crossing to Joel Ambalu who fired home from around 10-yards. City responded with a Greaves’ shot that hit the underside of the bar and bounced away. Russ Fry saw a header cleared off the City line by Salam as the game switched from end-to-end. City equalised on 42 minutes. Ross Durrant made a superb double save but the ball bounced to Elliott Holmes who managed to find the back of the net. City made a large number of changes at halftime and the side was not as effective as in the first-half. Ferriby largely dominated, despite also 18

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

making a number of changes as the half went on. Harrison Foulkes did well to come out to take the ball off Joe Pugh’s toes and Alberto dragged a header across goal. Ferriby went close on a number of occasions as they continually pressed City back. The Villagers regained the lead after 77 minutes when Emerton hit home after a save from Foulkes was not cleared. Three minutes later, Alberto clinched the win with a nice finish. Emerton played Alberto in and the striker coolly slid the ball past Foulkes. Jake Skelton cleared a Billy Chadwick shot off the line with five minutes but it was too little too late as far as City were concerned. In the end, Ferriby were comfortable winners of the Billy Bly trophy.

VIEW FROM THE STANDS

VIEW FROM THE STANDS by Sam Shepherd Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium for another pre-season friendly. Tonight we welcome Halifax Town and a few familiar faces. The most successful management team in the history of the club and a few of our FA Trophy heroes are back for the first time since the end of the 2015/16 season. I would like to personally welcome them back to the club. This is sure to be a good test for us as the Shaymen were promoted from the National League North last season. Ferriby enjoyed an excellent win last weekend as they won the Billy Bly Trophy 3-1 against the Hull City U23’s. While friendlies don’t mean that much in terms of results, it’s always good to get off the mark and register your first win. The Villagers played some good attacking football with Joel Ambalu, Danny Emerton and Alberto all getting on the scoresheet. Steve Housham will have been very pleased with the performance, as Ferriby continue to build towards the opening game of the season at Curzon Ashton on August 5th. The day got even better for Ferriby as they announced the signings of five players. The squad needed boosting and these five players will go a long way towards that. Simon Russell was the first to be announced, after an injury plagued season last year, it is great to see Russell stay as when he played last season he was a talisman in the side in the midfield engine room. 22

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

Youngsters Mitchell Langton, Lewis Exall and Eddie Rogerson also joined the club and finally a familiar face has re-joined the club. Russell Fry is back and he is certainly a welcome addition. Fry was known as “Mr Ferriby” and was one of the most deserving players to win the FA Trophy. Russ runs his blood to water for Ferriby and after a year away he will be welcomed back with open arms. He is vastly experienced at this level and the midfielder will be looking to quickly tie down a regular first-team berth in midfield. Hopefully today will be another good test for us and will give the squad more cohesion as we hurtle towards the start of the season which I for one can’t wait for! A win over our old manager and players would also be good wouldn’t it? Sam Shepherd North Ferriby United Supporter
