Welcome to the Chadwick Stadium as we take on South Shields. I hope everyone enjoys a great evening of football. I’ll start these notes by talking about our opening 1-1 draw with Marine. We have to take as many positives as we can from that performance against Marine on the opening weekend. With so many of our players not having played at this level, I think we would have settled for a point before the game. In the first half, I think we probably shaded it and had the better opportunities. However, in the second-half, they went up a gear and forced us back. Lewis Exall was outstanding in goal and he will take a lot from that. They really did chuck everything at us. We defended with our lives and it is pleasing that we defended with grit and determination. Luke Lofts has that bit of extra quality and he showed that with his goal. His work ethic was good, including defending when they had the ball. It’s going to take a few weeks and games to get used to the standard at this level. The sending-off of Danny Norton was harsh to my mind because I thought it was a penalty and, as often happens, they go down to the other end and score. Overall, though, Paul and I are happy with the performance and it gives us all NORTH FERRIBY UNITED vs SOUTH SHIELDS THE OFFICIAL 2018/19 MATCHDAY PROGRAMME

something to build on in coming weeks. We moved onto Tuesday night when we took on a strong Whitby Town outfit. Playing against strong sides such as Whitby, you have got to accept that you’re going to be pressured on the first ball. You have to get that initial ball and put a couple of passes together to relieve the pressure. We got that slightly wrong. However, it’s all about learning from our errors and putting things right. I don’t think we did enough to win the game, but I didn’t think we deserved to lose, so to concede a last-minute goal was a bitter pill to swallow. I think the game was there for the taking, but we lacked that little bit of composure and quality at times. On the positive note, we made far fewer unforced errors and conceded fewer freekicks, especially in what we call the danger areas. We will win games this season because of the spirit and attitude of the players. Chris Bolder First-Team Manager 4

THE OPPOSITION
South shields South Shields started life in the Evo-Stik Premier Division with a hard-fought victory after a Carl Finnigan brace saw off the challenge of Witton Albion. A bumper crowd of almost 1,700 cheered Shields on at Mariners Park and watched an, at times, nervy encounter between two teams searching for form. Finnigan opened the scoring on the strike of halftime with a sweet first-time finish, but the hosts were pegged back less than three minutes into the second half when James Foley converted a controversiallyawarded penalty. Shields plugged away in the remainder of the game and eventually got their reward with eight minutes remaining when Finnigan nodded in an impressive cross from Josh Gillies. It was a welcome opening-day victory for the Mariners, who fielded a team featuring four debutants, as well as Dan Wright, another summer arrival who had a loan spell at the club last season. Now the Marrines head to East Yorkshire hoping to build on their opening-day victory. The match will mark a small bit of history as South Shield and North Ferriby United have never played each other in a competitive fixture.
CLUB GUIDE
Nickname: The Mariners Founded: 1888 Chairman: Geoff Thompson Last Season: 1st (promoted) Ground: Mariners Park Capacity: 2,900 Managers: Graham Fenton & Lee Picton - After playing in the Premier League for the likes of Aston Villa and Blackburn, Graham has since become a successful manager, winning trophies aplenty with North Shields, and now South Shields, who he joined in September 2016. Superb all-round goalkeeper who is into his third season with the Mariners, having joined from Dunston UTS in 2016. He had spent seven years with Dunston, and is an FA Vase winner with both clubs. A strong and imposing presence who is the firstchoice goalkeeper at the club.
A defender with bags of potential, Morse has progressed brilliantly since joining Shields from Blyth Spartans in 2016. He has emerged as a true fans’ favourite, and was voted Supporters’ Player of the Year last time out, as well as the club’s Young Player of the Year.

Right-back who spent nine years with Gateshead, and was much sought-after before signing for Shields in 2016. Has been an integral part of the team since joining the club, with his strong defensive ability and football intelligence matched by his willingness to support attacks.
Has been one of Shields’ most consistent performers since signing in January 2017 after a five-year spell in Iceland. Accomplished at left-back or centre-back, he rarely puts a foot wrong defensively. He started his career at Newcastle before playing for KA Akureyri and IA Akranes.

THE VISITORS
DANIEL WRIGHT
JON SHAW
ROBERT BRIGGS
Talented, diminutive midfielder who returned to Shields on a permanent basis in the summer of 2018 after an earlier loan spell at the club. He represented England at Under-16s, Under-17s and Under-18s level, and progressed through the ranks with Sunderland.
Club captain Shaw is the man most in the Mariners squad look up to. A leader who can always be heard organising his team, it’s easy to forget he joined Shields as a prolific National League level striker in 2016 before being converted into an accomplished central defender.
Midfielder who continues to rise to the challenge with Shields, having been a part of three promotion campaigns in successive seasons. Also a dead-ball expert, Briggs is the club’s vice-captain and his leadership qualities continue to grow. He started his career as a teenager with Shields, too.
PHIL TURNBULL
GAVIN COGDON
CARL FINNIGAN
Midfielder who completed a long-awaited move to hometown club South Shields in the summer of 2018. ‘Twinny’ started his career with Hartlepool, but is perhaps best known for a successful sevenyear spell with Gateshead Football League, before joining Darlington.
‘Titch’ has brought out his full box of tricks since joining Shields in 2016, chipping in with goals and regularly catching the eye with his style of play. Has been a thorn in the side of opposition defences for more than a decade and shows no signs of slowing. A key figure at Mariners Park.
Striker who broke through the 50-goal barrier with the Mariners in the 2017-18 season and is vital to the team’s fortunes. The attacker is bestknown for his time in Scotland with Falkirk and Dundee, but his other former clubs include Newcastle United, Gateshead and Township Rollers.

THE VISITORS
SOUTH SHIELDS
recent history In 1950, Shields moved to Simonside Hall, and for a few years from the mid-1950s, it was widely acknowledged as one of the better non-league clubs in the country. The development of Simonside Hall, backed by the endeavours of a supporters club with a recorded membership of over 13,000, produced positive dividends. Shields played in five different leagues during the 1950s and 60s, and many will recall with great pleasure the appearance of Stanley Matthews in a game at Simonside Hall in 1966. A major change in the national non-league set-up came in 1968 with the formation of the Northern Premier League, part of the new soccer ‘pyramid’, with South Shields invited as a founder member. The club advanced to the FA Cup third round in 1970 and was drawn away to Queens Park Rangers. The final result of 4-1 also told a story of missed chances by Shields and numerous injuries sustained, against a side that included Terry Venables and Rodney Marsh. Also in 1974, the club reached the FA Trophy semi-final, but financial problems culminated in 1974 with the total loss of the club, the ground of Simonside Hill and all effects. The club went to Gateshead for the second time in 44 years and re-emerged as Gateshead, and took the place of South Shields in the Northern Premier League, and the rest is history. A new club, the South Shields Mariners FC, was born, and started with nothing. Initial progress was indeed quite remarkable, only the lack of a ground with adequate and sufficient facilities to satisfy the required criteria of the Northern League for promotion prevented this being maintained. After the winning of two consecutive Northern Alliance League championship titles, and an appearance in the FA Vase quarter-final, the club joined the Wearside League. Further success followed with the winning of the Durham Challenge Cup at Roker Park in 1977. 10
NORTH FERRIBY UNITED vs SOUTH SHIELDS The Official 2018/19 Matchday Programme
A ground to develop became a long-running issue and over the course of the next long 18 years, so the club remained a member of the Wearside League, seemingly unable to leave the councilowned Jack Clark Park. In 1992, the redundant sports club and ground of Filtrona FC became available for purchase, and following protracted negotiations, was bought by the club. Gradual upgrading and development of Filtrona Park and promotion to the First Division of the Northern League was achieved in the years that followed. The club’s recent successes were in 2009-10 as winners of the League Cup and J R Cleator Cup, but it faced a major challenge to stay at Filtrona Park after its former owner put it up for sale, and eventually Shields were forced to leave the ground in 2013. They also suffered relegation to Northern League Division Two in 2012-13, and kicked off the following season 20 miles away from home, in Peterlee. The club played home matches there for two years until new chairman Geoff Thompson bought Filtrona Park – now renamed Mariners Park – in the summer of 2015 to start a new era at the club. In his first season at the helm, Shields won the Northern League Division Two title with 107 points, and in the off-season, Mr Thompson continued with his plans for the club. They followed up that superb campaign with the most successful season in the club’s history, with Shields winning the Northern League, Northern League Cup and Durham Challenge Cup before adding the icing to the cake by lifting the FA Vase at Wembley - the first national trophy in the Mariners’ history. Last season, a third consecutive league title and promotion was achieved as Shields won the Evo-Stik North Division, and they now look ahead to a campaign in the Premier Division.

A goal deep into added time denied North Ferriby United a point, but the Villagers could not really complain about the end result against Whitby Town.
header. Those two efforts apart, both sides’ shooting was wayward to say the least and neither keeper really had much to do.

Ferriby worked hard in midfield and defence, but had very little to offer up-front. Whitby keeper Jack Norton did not have a save to make and was rarely put under any kind of pressure. Defences were largely on top in the first-half. Both sides worked hard in midfield to try to create chances, but space was at a premium. Junior Mondial for Whitby and Ferriby’s Luke Lofts looked the players most likely to create something with their skill and pace. Whitby began to get on top in the final 15 minutes of the half, but Ferriby’s defence was largely up to the task. In the end, the crowd had to wait until the 39th minute for the first attempt on goal.

Matthew Tymon and Greg Rutherford started to cause problems for Ferriby up-front. Town were generally that bit quicker to the ball and collected many of the second-phase ball. Rutherford should have scored after 55 minutes. He met Danny McWilliams’ cross at the far-post, but headed straight at Exall, who responded quickly to save. Whitby continued to press and Dale Hopson hit the crossbar after 66 minutes with a shot that had Exall beaten. For all their pressure, Whitby had few shots on target with Ferriby’s defence blocking a number of efforts. Like the first half, Ferriby did not really create any chances and the shooting from distance was wayward. With the game seemingly heading for a draw, Whitby finally broke the deadlock. The Villagers conceded a rather unnecessary corner. The initial cross was blocked, but the ball was played back in and Hopson crashed the ball home from around 18 yards.
