MANAGER’S COLUMN

STEVE

HOUSHAM

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Torquay United to our home on this Saturday afternoon, and hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. The match against Guiseley was titled a six-pointer at this early stage but to us as a group we know how important it is to get points at home against any team. But this first win was massive to the players and everyone involved at North Ferriby United, a win in the National League - history was made and it will install confidence to the players moving forward starting with this game. Myself and Darryn were forced into changes as a few members of the squad were caught up in traffic. Problems of which are all part of being a Non-League manager! However I was delighted with the players who come into the starting team on Tuesday night. As league games come thick and fast players are going to pick up the odd niggle and we have a few we have to access before Torquay but as shown on Tuesday night we have the players who can come in and live

upto the job. Today we entertain Torquay United, yes pinch yourselves North Ferriby United hosting Torquay. We expect another tough game and we go into it as underdogs despite being at home. Nevertheless we go into this fixture unbeaten at home and that is our aim to make our home ground a difficult place to come.

I hope you the fans enjoyed the history made by the club on Tuesday night yet again it was great to see so many of you here especially midweek. You made a great atmosphere and the spirit of the whole club is coming together and we hope you keep enjoying the ride. Myself and the players really appreciate your support and remember keep believing! Steve Housham First-Team Manager NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

THE OPPOSITION

THE VISITORS...

TORQUAY UNITED

North Ferriby United will be looking for backto-back wins when Torquay United visit the Eon Visual Media Stadium... The Villagers picked up a historic first win at this level last time out beating Guiseley 3-2 to send them to the bottom of the table. Goals from Ryan Kendall and Danny Emerton put the home side in a commanding position on Tuedsay night but they were pegged back by a brace from Oli Johnson. There was late drama however when a clearance hit Simon Russell and cannoned into the back of the net. Next up for North Ferriby is a home test against Torquay United who by their own admission haven’t begun the season as they would have

4

liked - picking up just one win on the second week of the season against Bromley. They followed that up with a 1-1 stalemate with Barrow before suffering a 2-0 defeat away to Sutton United. Their cause wasn’t helped when Ben Gerring was shown a second yellow card for a challenge on Sutton forward Maxime Biamou. That said the Gulls do have the quality in their ranks to cause Feriby problems today and must guard against complacency after their first win of the campaign.

THE PLAYERS

Who are the key men from Torquay United to keep your eye on this afternoon? We introduce them to you here.

THE TEAM GOALKEEPERS Brendan Moore Jamie Robba

DEFENDERS Lathaniel Rowe-Turner Giancarlo Gallfuoco Ben Gerring Sean McGinty Kevin Nicholson Robbie Herrera

BRENDAN MOORE

LATHANIEL ROWE-TURNER

After an initial loan spell with the club in March 2016, Brendan Moore returned to Torquay United on a permanent deal in June 2016. The American goalkeeper joined Fleetwood Town in February 2015 following a successful trial having previously spent five years with North Carolina Tar Heels in his native country.

Lathaniel first joined the club in February 2010 but his chances were limited, and he mainly made his 1st team appearances coming off the bench. ‘Snoop’ has pulled on the Yellow shirt once again after making over a hundred appearances for Luton Town, Alfreton, Kidderminster, and Nuneaton. Lathaniel is a tough, physical defender that will add experience to the defence.

FORWARDS Nathan Blissett Brett Williams Jamie Reid Will Hancox 6

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

BEN GERRING

COURTNEY RICHARDS

Torquay signed Ben Gerring on a noncontract basis on October 21st 2015 following a successful trial spell with the club. The 24 year-old local lad was part of the Plymouth Argyle youth system, but with his first-team chances limited at Home Park, he has since gone on to serve the likes of Weymouth, Kettering Town, Cambridge City, Taunton Town, Truro City, Bideford and Hayes & Yeading United, whom he has turned out for earlier this season in The National League South.

United completed the signing of the powerful midfield man in the summer of 2014 following a successful trial spell. His career began with Coventry City, where he came through the Academy ranks before moving on to Brighton & Hove Albion where he failed to make an impact on the firstteam. He appeared a total of 38 times for United last term and is expected to play another key role this time around.

THE OPPOSITION

THE RISING STAR

GIANCARLO GALLIFUOCO

AMAN VERMA TORQUAY United completed the loan capture of midfielder, Aman Verma, from National League rivals, Kidderminster Harriers on November 4th until January 2nd 2016. Aman became an important member of 2015-16 ‘The Great Escape’ squad, especially when he filled in at right back after a serious injury to Durrell Berry.

DAN SPARKES Dan signed for the club this summer after impressing Kevin Nicholson playing for Braintree Town. Sparkes came to the Yellow Army’s attention when he scored a hat-trick against United playing for Braintree Town. Dan has settled in well at the club, and United fans are eager to see him in action.

Torquay United pulled off quite a coup signing Giancarlo Gallifuoco ahead of the new season. The 22-year-old who had previously had spells with Tottenham Hotspur and Swansea City albeit without making a first-team appearance. Primarily used as a defender the Italian national can occupy the central midfield position.

THE GAFFER

BRETT WILLIAMS

NATHAN BLISSETT

The former Reading, Aldershot Towm, Stevenage and Forest Green Rovers striker Brett Williams agreed to move to Torquay United ahead of the 2016/17 campaign. The forward, born in Southampton, started his career at Eastleigh before joining Reading’s youth system.

Torquay United secured the services of talented front-man, Nathan Blissett, following his release by League Two club, Bristol Rovers, on January 18th 2016. Born in West Bromwich, he came to prominence on the local nonLeague scene before being signed by Kidderminster Harriers ahead of the 2012/13 campaign.

KEVIN NICHOLSON

Torquay United appointed Kevin Nicholson as player-manager on September 28th 2015 after the departure of Paul Cox. He then guided the club to safety in the National League having been 12 points adrift from safety in February. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

0 NORTH FERRIBY UNITED

Saturday 13th August Crabble Athletic Stadium Attendance: 726 National League

This was a much improved away display by the Villagers who battled well and were ultimately unfortunate not to pick up their first away point. A goal in each half settled the match. Moses Emanuel converting Ross Lafayette’s curling cross on 34 minutes and then Lafayette scoring himself after a mix up between Sam Topliss and Rory Watson. The first half hour was very even, Conner Robinson had a shot blocked and when the impressive Ricky Modeste led a break away from a Ferriby corner, Watson did well to twice deny Emmanuelle from point blank range one, of a number of good stops that the keeper was to make during the course of the afternoon. The Villagers nearly equalised immediately after the opening goal, the lively Connor Robinson sent a dipping lob which Arnold did well to tip over in the hosts goal. Steve Brogan and Curtis Bateson also linked well for Ferriby on the left hand side.

For Dover, Modeste’s extreme pace was always a threat but Ferriby’s back four held up well with debutant Liam Slade particularly impressive.

On the whole the hosts shaded the second half but Ferriby still had plenty of procession and looked capable of grabbing the equaliser but hopes the Villagers had of snatching a point were ended by the second goal.

Ferriby were so close to equalising early in the second half when Simon North Ferriby United Line-Up Russell hit a 1. Rory Watson Substitutes stinging drive 2. Sam Topliss which was 3. North Ferriby United picked up their first win in the National League when they won a pulsating encounter against old rivals Guiseley at the Eon Visual Media Stadium.

from him saw Connor Oliver fire over. At the other end the lively Guiseley attack led by the ex Norwich striker Johnson was always a handful for the Ferriby defence.

The visitors will wonder how they came away with nothing after dominating long periods of the game but a determined effort by the Villagers saw them take the three points.

After a spell of Guiseley pressure on 21 minutes the Villagers made it 2-0. Louis Bruce’s long throw was never properly cleared and the ball fell to Danny Emerton on the edge of the box who fired it into the net.

Ferriby got off to a great start going ahead on eight minutes, a fine run down the left hand side by the every impressive Curtis Bateson, saw his cross reach Ryan Kendall who fired into the roof of the net. Bateson was causing all sorts of problems for the Guiseley defence another good ball

Guiseley responded well to going behind and halved the deficit when a defensive mix up saw Johnson advance unchallenged and he lifted the ball over Watson in the 29th minute. The visitors finished the half strongly with Watson saving well and then Skelton clearing off the line as the half closed.

defended stoutly and although Guiseley enjoyed the bulk of the procession they had few on target efforts, when they did the accomplished Watson belied his young years, saving particularly well from Rankine. Despite Guiseley’s dominance Ferriby had a great chance to make it 3-1 when Emerton was put through but Atkinson came to the visitors rescue. It looked as if Ferriby were going to hang on for the three points, Hare cleared off the line on 82 minutes but on 84 mins Guiseley got the equaliser they deserved when Johnson had time and space in the box to calmly finish in the bottom corner. There was to be a dramatic late twist though, Simon Russell broke through from midfield, he exchanged passes with Kendall and advanced on goal, the Guiseley defender attempted to clear but as Russell closed him down the defenders tackle bounced off the midfielder and nestled in the bottom corner to give Ferriby their historic win.

GUEST COLUMN

View From The

STANDS

Sam Shepherd returns to the Villagers fold with his regular column and give us his take on the start to the season and the historic victory over Guiseley... As many of us expected the first 3 games of the season were not easy for Ferriby. We started with a solid point against Braintree followed by a thumping at Lincoln and a frustrating defeat at Dover.

by half-time they had a goal back. In the second-half Ferriby’s goal was peppered but a mixture of poor

held on for their first ever win in the National League and that is a brilliant achievement for everyone

The point on the opening day was a good way to mark a historic game for Ferriby and we would be forgiven for not expecting to pick up many points away from home so it has been an average start. On Tuesday evening we welcomed Guiseley to the Eon Visual Media Stadium, the visitors were yet to pick up a point from their opening games so this represented a real opportunity for the Villagers. The first 25 minutes of the game showed a huge improvement from Ferriby in the attacking third, they created two good chances and converted them both. A cross came into the box and bobbled around a few defenders before it fell to Ryan Kendall who smashed it into the top corner. A few minutes later a cross wasn’t cleared and it fell to Danny Emerton on the edge of the box and he placed it past the keeper and into the bottom corner. It had been a great start for Ferriby but Guiseley slowly worked their way into the game and 22

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

finishing and last ditch defending meant that Guiseley had only managed to equalise going into the last 5 minutes when they could have been well ahead. Steve Housham’s men had given everything and one of the best players on the night Simon Russell got a huge slice of luck in the 88th minute. An attempted clearance cannoned into Russell’s leg and it bobbled into the bottom corner to spark passionate celebrations from the whole team. The Villagers

at the club. Today we welcome Torquay United to the EVM Stadium and this is another fixture that shows how far we have come. As it stands this fixture is 17th v 18th so we should be targeting at least a point to remain unbeaten at home. If we can be a bit tighter at the back I see no reason we can’t pick up another 3 points. Enjoy the game! Sam
