25 - ENGLAND 50 28 - MEAD MATTERS 35 - CLUB STATS Good afternoon everyone, We’re back on the road to Wembley and the march to the arch this afternoon, and after all the attention that our tie with Guernsey drew both at home and in the end overseas too, it’ll be nice to get back to a “normal” game in the Greatest Cup Competition in the World - if there is such a thing of course! Included in today’s “The Mead”, we’ve a special feature on “that” goal we scored in the last round through the eyes of the three players directly involved in

“the most bizarre goal ever scored in the FA Cup”; our series on England 50 - the anniversary of our World Cup win in 1966 by looking at how an Army sergeant left the North East a World Cup legend and of course all the latest news from the Chairman’s Office and the Manager’s Desk... Enjoy the day and don’t forget to keep hold of that raffle ticket you were given at the gate - you may need it at half time! Cheers Greenie

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Paul

BOWDEN-BROWN May I sincerely welcome the directors, officials, players and supporters from Chertsey FC to our home Sporting Club Thamesmead for this FA Cup Match, and I hope after the match they enjoy some refreshments before having a safe journey home. I would also welcome all of our community season ticket holders, and apologise for those that may have had to pay to watch the FA Cup match today but unfortunately its FA rules state all must pay on the day. Well here we are through to the next round after having to travel to Guernsey two weeks ago where we drew, and then having to play the reply on the following Tuesday which we won on penalties after extra time was played so all involved were certainly tired at the end of the match.

04

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

I did not travel to our match last Saturday due to a prior family commitment, but I was kept up to date with goings on by Mike Green and his texts, it would seem by the content of his reports, the score and the remarks made by the manager after the game - I did not miss anything. But to say I was disappointed with the result would be a great understatement, but that is down to our manager to deal with. On Monday Aveley visited the SCT and went away gaining a point after a very strange game in my opinion I cannot see to this day how a home club scoring 3 goals does not win a match. I personally feel that some of our players are not playing to their best for whatever reason, and due to this we are playing disjointedly. But once again this is a matter for my first-team management to deal with, but as the league table states played 4 won 2 drawn 1 lost 1 with

7 points out of 12 not bad for a new squad. Someone asked me the other day did I like the FA Cup as a chairman and have I had any exciting experiences during my time in Non-League football, my reply was that I personally enjoy the FA Trophy rather than the FA Cup as there is always the possibility of going all the way to Wembley. Even if that would only be a slim chance, but I find that playing teams in the FA Cup you find, as we are today, playing clubs at a lower level but I find that they always play as if they were in a cup final, so all matches turn out to be very hard. I can remember a very enjoyable FA Cup match in season 2002-03 when I was the owner/ chairman of Maidstone United FC - it was the first season that the club were allowed in the FA Cup. We entertained Tonbridge Angels, and

everyone has given me their full support with the way the club is now run.

Now that the season has started I would like to put in print my sincere thanks to every one of the off the field volunteers within this fine old club, some of these have held many roles within this club long before I arrived in 2012.

Now my thanks would not be complete if I do not mention Ian Docker my academy manager and now also my director of football, he has fulfilled both these roles admirably during some very difficult times especially whilst I have been recuperating from my operation. So thank you Ian for your continued support, and also a big thank you for bringing the first-team management of Tom Warrilow and Alex O’Brian to this club, without your input they would never have joined us.

But are still giving their time to ensure that this club runs smoothly, they all know who they are, they carry out their duties mostly behind the scenes to ensure that this club functions throughout the football season home and away. Without their effort and unconditional support we would not be able to function, so I thank you, I believe it is always very difficult at times when a new person takes overall control of a club from those that may have been involved for many years, but I can confirm to a person I have received full and unconditional support for the one main reason we all want the club to succeed, and to a person

Now let’s all enjoy the spirit of the FA Cup, and hopefully we can be in the draw for the next round. Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

MANAGER’S NOTES

Tommy

WARRILOW Good afternoon everyone and thanks for joining us this afternoon as we head back on the Emirates FA Cup trail as we welcome all the players, officials and supporters of Chertsey Town who have made the trip to Bayliss Avenue today on Non-League Day 2016. We worked very hard to get here this afternoon in the two games against Guernsey and hopefully the boys will be able to sustain the

levels we reached at periods in both games again this afternoon to get pass what will undoubtedly be another very difficult tie today. I must thank everyone connected with Guernsey FC for a great trip in the last round – we really well looked after throughout and I’ve never seen a side two-nil down at home be applauded off by a whole stand of fans as they left the pitch at half-time as they were in the first game. That just doesn’t

happen – I was gobsmacked – what reaction do they get if they’re two-nil up? That’s in the past and we’re now focused on Chertsey and they’ve had a good start to the season as well. We mustn’t forget that we’re doing OK too especially when you remember we have a brand new squad that’s only been assembled in the last few weeks. For me, the pros already outweigh

the cons even though I keep going onto the boys about the cons at the moment, because if we can eradicate those at the moment it’s going to make our lives a lot easier. The last two games have seen us concede five goals, and with no disrespect to either side, all five goals were presented to them – they haven’t had to work for them which is really disappointing. We on the other hand really have had to work hard for all our goals as was highlighted I thought against Aveley on Bank Holiday Monday. It’s going to be a long old season – my main emphasis at

the moment is to stay with the play-off pack and get into the New Year getting in or around that mark. Experience tells me that February, March and then into April it will be a good position to be in. I’m not going to analyse and go overboard on every single game; I’ll just tell the boys what I think and we’ll work on it in training but I think Monday’s game was a good game to watch for the neutral, and at least we’re playing some good stuff now. It’s very, very early day’s so it look’s promising and I hope that we can continue on what we’re doing and build on the positives.

We’ve got another busy ten days in front of us as the boys are back in Ryman League action on Tuesday – maybe! That’s all explained elsewhere but one thing I do know is that every one of the players really do value your support so please get behind the boys again this afternoon and we’ll see you all after the game in the bar for a chat. Enjoy the game! Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

Welcome today to our FA Cup tie where we see our boys take on Chertsey.

In Injury news:

It’s been a very hectic few weeks for the boys with our first FA cup round of 2016/17 played in Guernsey and the replay played 36 hours later which went the full distance of extra time and penalties. The game against Brentwood seemed to really take its toll on the boys and there looked to be a few tired legs on the

We saw Lewis Knight come off injured in the Brentwood game with a knee injury which will potentially put him out for a few weeks, we will know more after further assessment. Bode missed Monday’s game with a hamstring strain but we’re hoping he’ll be back within the next week after a period of rest.

Ellis made an appearance in Monday’s game after 3 weeks out injured. Let’s hope it’ll be a quiet game for me and there will be no new injuries to add to the list. Enjoy today’s game, Carly Payne First-team Physio

THE UNDER-21S

THE

UNDER-21s Welcome to all from Chertsey Town the players, supporters and staff.

Our under-21’s development side played our first league game of the season last Tuesday night at home to AFC Sudbury - a game we’ve all been looking forward to for some time now. Our opponents started brightly but we kept our shape and made it hard for them to break us down. After some hard work pressing high by Jeremiah Efe he gave us an early lead. Followed closely by a spot kick from Richard Butler to double our lead at the break. To be honest we weren’t playing that well but I knew we had a lot more in the tank. Well so I thought. Once again Sudbury started the second-half very lively. They kept and moved the ball a lot quicker than us and they’re movement was our downfall. In very quick time we found ourselves at 2-2. I was still scratching my head as to what’s gone wrong when Charlie Himbury our keeper was shown his 2nd yellow which resulted in a red card and with no keeper on the bench Gary Mulgrew took over the gloves. We couldn’t get near the ball in the last 20 minutes and conceded another two goals to finally lose 2-4. Lets just finish by saying that both myself and

Ian Docker had a “quiet” word with lads after just to reaffirm our standards that we expect. Without doubt we will learn from Tuesday nights game including me. There were a few things we can all do different in the future. Well dust ourselves off Thursday night at training and go again in the league next week. On the plus side we had three seventeen year old lads make they’re senior debuts against AFC - Scott Moore, Victor Ozobia and George Fisher. Monday night will bring our FA Youth Cup campaign to the forefront with a home tie against Folkestone Invicta at home. Myself and Ian will work together in the competition this season as well as continuing to work closely with our Academy lads, the under-21’s and of course the first-team. Over the last few months we’ve worked extremely hard to bring the club closer together as a unit. Last of all good luck to Tommy, OB, and all the staff /players in today’s game and here’s hoping that we’ll be in the draw on Monday morning! Gary Ryan Under-21s Manager

one, will be Tuesday 6th September.

The bank holiday fixtures did not prove as fruitful has we had hoped, going down 2-0 to a young pacey Brentwood last Saturday, a game that in all honesty we never looked like getting anything from for the 90 minutes.

Chertsey play in the Combined League Premier Division and I will be expecting a tough match today, just under £3000 is at stake for today’s winners and a chance to go into the hat for Monday’s draw.

On another cup front we will now visit Folkestone in the Kent Senior Cup on Tuesday 4th October, we have yet to get a new confirmed date from Maldon for that Ryman League fixture.

I hope you enjoy today’s game, there will be no extra-time should the game be drawn at 90 minutes, the replay, should there need to be

Enjoy the match.

Monday saw us welcome Aveley, despite taking a 2-0 lead we failed to find our consistency levels and

If there is a result today then on Tuesday we will entertain Tilbury at SCT in a Ryman League fixture.

Their fixtures have succombed to postponments and the club sit in 9th place having picked up nine points from their opening four

Chertsey opened their campaign with a 2-0 win over Sutton Common Rovers before going onto lose 3-0 to Westfield.

CLUB HISTORY The official founding of the club took place in 1890 when matches were played in the West Surrey League. The first success came in 1897 when the Surrey Junior Cup was secured.

in 1967.

A one year gap took place before football resumed in the same competition which eventually became the East and West Surrey League. A further halt in football took place during the Great War but soon after, in 1919, the club joined the Surrey Intermediate League where it stayed, uneventfully, until 1939 and a further break. An invitation to become founder members of the Surrey Senior League was not taken up in 1923 but membership was later assumed, on attaining senior status in 1946.

Indifferent results then dogged the club for almost two decades. This situation was briefly relieved in 1974/75 when the club were league and league cup runners up to an up an coming Farnborough Town. Meanwhile, the fabric of the club was being built up behind the scenes and despite lack of prominence on the park, movement was made via the London Spartan (1975/76) and Athenian leagues through to the Isthmian family with a place in Division Two South in 1984. Instant relegation to the Combined Counties League was suffered but a rejuvenated side won promotion back to Isthmian ranks within the year whilst winning the League Cup on the way.

Although Chertsey gained membership of the Surrey Senior League immediately after the second world war, it was not until the 1959/60 season that success came with the league championship. This was repeated twice in the next three years, a halcyon period when the League Cup was also won on three occasions.

The club was rewarded with good league positions but further promotion denied at first. The worst season after returning to the Isthmians came when the two Division Twos were split in 1991 and a place in the new Division Three had to suffice. This position was quickly rectified with a runner’s up slot seven years ago.

Due to the static nature of amateur football in those days, the club could not progress to the preferred Corinthian League so, in 1963, it was controversially decided to turn professional and enter the Metropolitan League. Although an entertaining three years were then enjoyed, the cost was too much to bear and a return to the lower levels of the Greater London League for one season occurred before a further shift to the Spartan League was made

Only one campaign was required in Division One before further promotion, to the Premier Division. The first season at that level was one of consolidation but the second was more difficult. A late rally was experienced, but was insufficient to avoid the drop to Division One. Two subsequent Division One campaigns saw comfortable but the third proved too difficult after a very poor first half of the season.

THE OPPOSITION

Relatively respectable positions were attained for the next two seasons and then a return to Division One, taking a place in the revised south section in the Isthmian re-organisation. The side was not able to compete at this level and relegation to Division Two was suffered in 2003. With the dissolution of the division, the club was allocated to Combined Counties League in 2006. Promotionally hopeful situations were created regularly over the five terms in that competition. Finishing as runners up in 2011 was good enough on that occasion to secure promotion to Division One Central of the Southern League. Unspectacular, but safe, performances were achieved for two seasons but relegation was suffered at the end of the 2013/14 season, and with it a return to the Combined Counties League where two modest seasons have prevailed. The team manager’s roll was taken over in the 2014 close season by Kim Harris. The Chairman is Steve Powers. The club which also has a comprehensive and integrated junior section of boys from all ages. The club also has effectively a second team under the banner Chertsey Curfews. A ladies team who play in the Surrey Women’s League is also supported. Chertsey Town’s nickname, the ‘Curfews’ is derived from a locally famous bell that hangs in the nearby St. Peters Church. The bell has rung out the evening curfew, now ceremoniously of course, for over five hundred years.

MATCH ACTION

WHEN THE MEAD WENT VIRAL... In the last round, the Mead created FA Cup history by providing the opposition for the first ever tie played in the Channel Islands. What no-one could have predicted was the way the coverage of the Mead’s second goal – which has been called “The most bizarre goal ever scored in the FA Cup!” When JACK MAHONEY bundled the Mead’s second goal over the line after SCOTT KINCH’S original shot had ballooned up into the wind and PAUL VINES had headed the rebound onto the cross bar, none of us could have predicted the international attention that the video would draw. The FA-TV clip on YouTube had attracted over 230,000 views at the start of this week and it had been mentioned and shown on national newspaper website at home and abroad and had even been shown on the “TEN Sport” website in Australia. But what exactly happened? MIKE GREEN’s been talking to those directly involved…

20

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

JACK – “It’s probably one of the worst goals that I’ve ever scored. At the time, we didn’t think about it. It was only a couple of days later when I kept seeing it on Facebook and Twitter that I realised exactly what happened. It’s weird the way its just gone everywhere. When Kinchy had the shot, I went to turn away after seeing the ball go so high in the air, but turned again as people started shouting. As the noise got louder, I turned and saw Vinesy challenging for the header and I thought I’d better get in the box in case anything breaks and I got in the way of the clearance and was as surprised as anyone when it went in. The reaction has been incredible – I’ve been on talkSPORT about it, and I’ve never done anything like that. It’s nice though… A few of the boys took the mickey out of me for being on the radio and some of my mates outside of football heard it to and have given me some stick. The day it all started on the internet, my phone went mad with people texting me – “have you seen your goal?” – I then realised that the FATV had retweeted it and other sites had

picked it up.” KINCHY – “It’s a mystery what happened really – I went for the shot; miss-hit it and it seemed to be sailing high and wide and I turned my back. Next thing I know, the crowd started laughing and joking so I turned round just in time to see Vinesy head the ball against the bar and Jack followed up to score. I then turned round and gave some of the stick back to the crowd as the ball stayed in play – and I still don’t quite know how! I’ve never seen anything like it before and that’s got to be the reason that its gone viral on the internet – its bizarre! I honestly don’t think that it will ever happen again but it was a moment of madness – do I claim it as an assist? I’ve had some stick on how the ball went as I don’t think anyone’s seen a ball go so high – it looked like it was going on for miles but I’m going to make a joke of it and say that I played for it by playing it into the wind!” VINESY – “We’d had a fair bit of pressure at the time and I remember the ball coming in and trying to set it

MATCH ACTION

for someone to shoot from the edge of the box and then unluckily it fell to Kinchy! From that range, I’d never part with any money on him scoring, but you know as a striker when the ball comes past you, you turn and face the goal just in case. Where everyone else turned away in “disgust” I saw the ball come over my head, and thought I’m on my own as the balls dropping out of the sky like a brick. Honestly I had a stiff neck for days after… The keeper I think thought the header was going to bounce over but as luck would have it Jack was following in as well which managers go on and on and on about and he managed to get a toe on it. It was a completely and utterly crazy goal but with what went on in the first half it was a goal

that I felt that we deserved. It was a few storeys high I know that much – because Kinchy had hit it reasonably hard straight into the wind it had no-where to go expect straight up so it continued to go straight up. The cameraman pans to where the ball should have gone – it looks like it was heading back to the hotel a mile up the road – but it went a mile up instead! I’m trying to remind the boys that I was the one who scored the first FA Cup goal in the Channel Islands at every opportunity, and I will continue to do so for a few more weeks I think! It’s not a bad thing to have on your CV – you never know I might become a pub quiz question or a question on “A Question of Sport” in years to come!”

THE GAFFER – “I must be honest – I haven’t seen it all the way through! Before I got your phone call about it on the day of the replay Greenie, I thought it was for Vinesy’s goal for being the first goal-scorer of a FA Cup goal in the Channel Islands… I’ve since been told that you don’t actually see where the ball goes as the cameraman is following where he thought the ball was going (or should have gone) rather than the way it just dropped. You know I think it just shows that in that game just how well both sides did to put a game on like that as both teams scored against the wind when it should have been a lot harder.”

MAN OF THE MATCH

MAN OF THE

MATCH AWARD

We’re delighted that Erica Cooper and her daughter Charlotte are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award again this season. Throughout the 2016/17 season, Thamesmead Town will once again be presenting the Mead Man of the Match award after each home game. Again, we are indebted to Erica Cooper and her daughter, Charlotte, for donating the prize to the club. This year, the awarding of the prize will take place on the pitch as the Mead leave the field. So hang around for a few minutes at the end of the game to see who is the recipient of the Cooper Man of the Match award.

AN UNLIKELY WORLD CUP HERO - PAK DOO-IK

Today in our continuing series remembering the fiftieth anniversary of England’s greatest ever footballing day, and this afternoon MIKE GREEN focuses on one of the players who became a house-hold name as a result of those few weeks in 1966. It’s not Hurst, Moore, Charlton, Beckenbauer or Eusebio – today we look at the story of a player who arrived in the North East an army sergeant but left as a World Cup legend… his name PAK DOO-IK On a road named Sports Street in Pyongyang, North Korea, there are apartments for the nation’s athletic heroes to live out their days in comfort. And because of one sunny July afternoon in North East England fifty years ago, an ex-army sergeant

by the name of Pak Doo-Ik has one of them.

As we told you last time, there was only one place allocated to the Asian, African and Oceanic continental zones. Apartheid in South Africa meant the country was suspended by FIFA, and the fifteen remaining African countries withdrew from qualifying in protest against there

being no automatic spot for an African team. When South Korea withdrew, North Korea were left with a two-legged qualifying tie against Australia which they won 9-2 on aggregate. Eventually after a lot of deliberation and FIFA pressure, the Harold Wilson’s newly elected government finally relented over the granting of the visas to the team, allowing the Korean delegation to finally arrive in North East for their group games at Ayresome Park.

Office because it featured the flag of North Korea and tensions were running high. The locals initially didn’t bond with the team, but the support for the group underdogs grew and grew. It started when the Koreans (average height 5ft 5ins), were physically dominated by the Soviet Union in their first game, losing 3-0. A late goal then rescued a draw with Chile, leaving North Korea facing the might of the Italians in what was surely to be their last game of the competition. Yet before they’d left their homeland, they whole squad had been given a “request” by the countries Leader Kim Il Sung in a meeting – “I urge you to win one or two matches,” the military general told them. Now whether there was a “hidden message” in that we’ll never know. One thing that is clear however is that famous Tuesday night in the North East of England became not only that World Cup’s biggest upset but also wrote a page forever in the annuls of World Cup history for North Korean football. The report in “The Times” after the draw with Chile noted that they were

26

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

beginning to win the battle for hearts and minds: “Rarely have supporters taken a team to their hearts as the football followers of Middlesbrough have taken these whimsical orientals,” it said. The locals were indeed won over. The side played in red, much like their own team, and when the town’s mayor accepted the squad’s gift of an embroidered picture of a bird, which is still on display in the town’s Dorman Museum, their place was set. With the Azurri beating Chile and losing to Soviet Union it meant that it was ‘winner takes all’ against the Koreans, although Italy only needed a draw to progress as Korea had managed just a single goal in their two matches. Skipper Giacomo Bulgarelli aggravated a knee injury in a sliding tackle early on and with no substitutes allowed, Italy were a man down for the last hour. Then three minutes from half time, an Italian clearance was headed back towards their area and Pak Doo-Ik let it run into his stride before hitting a low shot across the keeper and into the Italian net sparking scenes that many compared to Boro scoring against either Newcastle or Sunderland!

The following day the Daily Express reported “Pak Doo-Ik last night detonated one of the great explosions in soccer. He scored the goal that hurled the Italians out of the World Cup. That sent the non-entities of North Korea into the quarter-finals. That sent the Land of the Morning Calm into a Middlesbrough night of frenzy.” The Koreans went onto frighten the living daylights out of Portugal – Eusebio and all – at Goodison Park in the Quarter Final before bowing out 3-5 – the little men from the east had lead 3-0 after 25 minutes! But that side of 1966 will always be remembered by those who saw them – a point that was emphasized in 2002 on his return to England, Pak Doo-Ik was quoted as saying “It was the day I learnt football is not all about winning. When I scored that goal, the people of Middlesbrough took us to their hearts. I learnt that playing football can improve diplomatic relations and promote peace.” One footnote – Ayresome Park is now someone’s front garden, and in one of them there’s the bronze cast of the imprint of a football boot on the spot where Pak Doo-Ik hit his shot.
