THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

STEVE HOUSHAM May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Rotherham United to the Eon Visual Media Stadium, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome back to the Eon Visual Media stadium for another pre-season test! We took on FC Halifax Town recently and, if I’m being honest, it wasn’t a very good workout, against similar quality we’re going to come up against this season in this league. There is probably not the like of a Tom Denton about though, because he is unplayable at times and like I said to the players, you’ve just got to be aware he’s going to win probably 10 out of 10 headers. So you’ve got to be aware of the flick downs or the knock downs and you’ve got to be lively to that. But saying that, for the first 20 minutes of football, we played some good stuff at a decent tempo and lo and behold, we hit a post and they score from it. That was a similar story to last season, the counter-attack and it’s something we’re working on. I said to the lads, I don’t want them to beat themselves up, we conceded a goal and Jake Skelton’s head seemed to go down a lot and I’ve rather them make mistakes now and talk them through it. Then, hopefully, come August 5th they are not making the same mistakes. In terms of goals, I’m not concerned because we are creating, the kids up top look lively. Joel

Ambula and Alberto look lively, we’ve got Joe Pugh coming back from a little bit of a niggle, so nothing concerns me in that aspect. I think we look better going forward then we did last season if I’m being honest. It’s just cutting out them mistakes, the ones which cost us a lot last season. In terms of new faces, we had Callum Razonca he came on for the last 10 minutes against Halifax and did really well the game before. But I’ve got to keep to what I’ve been given, so it’s difficult and I apologies to the players against Halifax, who didn’t get a games, but were getting to that stage of the pre-season where they have to start playing 90 minutes. I’ve been through a lot away from football and I don’t want to see any unhappy people, I don’t work with unhappy people and football is a game where you play with a smile on your face and you enjoy every moment. In my head I’ve got a starting eleven for the new season and I do know their weak points that I do need to get sorted. THE OWNERS

THE OWNERS

STEVE & EMAN FORSTER Welcome back to the Eon Visual Media Stadium, I hope we enjoy a great game of pre-season football and I welcome everyone from Leeds United who have made the journey.

We are really excited about the forthcoming Vanarama National League North season. We are again going to be playing in a very competitive league. As usual, the champions will gain automatic promotion, but there will now be six play-off places to play for. This should ensure that the season is kept alive right until the last game. Like all of you, we are hoping this season for a cup run this season. Let us hope the draw is kind to us. Steve Housham is doing a great job mixing youth and experience with his new signings and we are sure that we will have a squad that is capable of competing well. We need to make the Eon Visual Media Stadium our “friendly fortress” this season. The club gained a tremendous amount of praise from visiting fans last season. Indeed, we came seventh in a vote on the

favourite National League grounds. The club’s volunteers have been awesome this close season. They have put in a tremendous amount of work and the ground is looking fantastic. The club has invested in a high maintenance programme over the summer to improve the pitch to keep to our very high playing standard that we are known for. We would like to thank our sponsors, our volunteers and the management team, all of whom have worked so hard over summer break. Without their efforts the club would not be anything like this standard. Now it is over to Housh and Stampy, their back-room team and the players and, of course, our loyal supporters, to make the coming season a great experience. With our team providing youth, enthusiasm, team work and having Housh and Stampy at the helm we should see some fantastic matches. Keep supporting this great community club and help to put North Ferriby on the map once again. Steve & Eman Forster Club Owners

ROTHERHAM UNITED

Rotherham United suffered relegation from the Championship last term and will be keen to bounce back at the first time of asking. If pre-season results is anything to go by, Rotherham will be pleased with what they have produced so far. The Millers opened their preparations for life in League One with a 6-2 win away at Parkgate FC, before another convincing 7-1 win away at Floridsdorfer AC. The Millers then hosted Soproni VSE, but again came away with victory. A double midweek Tuesday game with Gainsborough Trinity was to follow and a solitary goal from

Jamie Proctor was enough to ensure victory. On the same night, the Millers also sent a squad to Alfreton Town’s Impact Arena, but still prevailed with a 2-0 success. A sterner test was to follow at home to Sheffield United and the Millers registered their first loss of pre-season. Following an even first half, Chris Basham’s cross-cum-shot was deflected into his own goal by home debutant Michael Ihiekwe, before Enda Stevens doubled the Blades advantage. Youngster Jerry Yates gave the Millers hope in the dying minutes but Chris Wilder’s men held on for victory. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

THE TEAM GOALKEEPERS Richard O’Donnell Lewis Price Laurence Bilboe

DEFENDERS Joe Mattock Richard Wood Michael Ihiekwe Semi Ajayi Dominic Ball Darnell Fisher Mason Warren Aimen Belaid Ben Purrington

RICHARD O’DONNELL Sheffield-born goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell started his career with Sheffield Wednesday, who used the loan system to give the youngster some valuable first-team experience. Quickly rose to the Championship, before penning a permanent deal until 2019 with the Millers.

JOE MATTOCK Born in Leicester, Joe Mattock started his career with his hometown club making his professional debut for Leicester City in 2007. Last season he was a consistent figure under three managers, playing 36 games in all and scoring a spectacular goal in the defeat at Brentford.

MIDFIELDERS Will Vaulks Anthony Forde Lee Frecklington Jon Taylor Joe Newell Alex Bray Darren Potter

BEN PURRINGTON

Ryan Williams

Rotherham completed the signing of Ben Purrington from Plymouth in January 2017. The left-back agreed a threeand-a-half-year deal with the Millers after leaving Home Park for the first time in his career. The 20-year-old attracted the attention of the Millers after showing some sparkling form.

FORWARDS Jonson Clarke-Harris David Ball Jerry Yates Dexter Blackstock Jamie Proctor 10

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

DAVID BALL Rotherham United signed versatile defender Dominic Ball for an undisclosed fee from Tottenham Hotspur in August 2016. The 21-year-old central defender agreed a three-year deal at AESSEAL New York Stadium and made his debut in the defeat against Villa.

THE OPPOSITION

LEE FRECKLINGTON Despite injury during the 2016/17 season, Lee Frecklington played a major role again as the Millers defied the odds to secure Championship survival, scoring in the home victory over Leeds United. He has been named as club captain by boss Alan Stubbs.

ANTHONY FORDE

JOE NEWELL

22-year-old winger Anthony Forde joins the Millers having only previously represented Wolverhampton Wanderers, Scunthorpe United and Walsall in his professional career. He began his journey in football with hometown club Ballingarry FC as a youngster but departed to join Wolves.

Joe Newell joined the Millers in the summer of 2015 having made the switch from Peterborough United in early August. Primarily a midfielder, the highly-rated Newell can operate in a number of positions including left back and is set for a big year as he looks to establish himself.

DEXTER BLACKSTOCK

DAVID BALL

JAMIE PROCTOR

Dexter Blackstock agreed a three-year deal with the Millers just after the August 2016 transfer deadline. The 30-year-old marksman left fellow Sky Bet Championship club Nottingham Forest after seven years at City Ground, before opting to join the Millers on a free transfer.

David Ball agreed a two-year deal after leaving Fleetwood Town. The 27-year-old has enjoyed a five-year spell with the Cod Army, which included a starring role in their promotion to League One in 2014 via the play-offs. Ball played a key role last season, scoring 14 goals in 55 appearances.

Rotherham United signed Bolton Wanderers striker Jamie Proctor for an undisclosed fee during the close season. The 25-year-old has agreed a two-year deal with the Millers. Boss Paul Warne had promised to strengthen his attacking options during the close season. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

FEATURE INTERVIEW

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

SIMON RUSSELL After suffering a horrific injury last season, Simon Russell sat down with The Villagers programme to tell us all about his recovery and why signing for North Ferriby was an easy decision.

12

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

FEATURE INTERVIEW

I’m absolutely delighted to sign again, as everyone knows last year I broke my kneecap at a pivotal point of the season for myself and the team. Obviously it was a long road to recovery and I tried to come back towards the end of the season and had a bit of a break down from trying to come back too quick. I’ve worked hard all summer and there was only one place that I wanted to stay and play my football and really repay the club for having faith in me. Tp be honest, first and foremost, coming back and speaking to Steve Housham over the summer was for me to get fit and to prove to the club that my knee was alright. So far, I’ve not missed a training session and I’ve played every minute that I have been asked to in the pre-season games and my knee feels great. So that really was the main point from Housham and for me, personally, just to come back and help the club and help the younger players. I think we’re going to have quite a young squad this year, so hopefully my experience can help bring them on. I’m constantly trying to help them and talk to them, even throughout this pre-season and

I think the squad we’re putting together is slowly getting there. We’re getting some new players and there is quite a mixture of young lads and older heads and it’s looking good. I think, going forward, it’s going to be a tough season without a doubt in this league, but we’ve got to compete with these sorts of teams, clubs with big budgets, and there is no reason why we can’t. MATCH Tom DENTON

Monday 24 July 2016 | Eon Visual Media Stadium | This game had rather more passion than is usually seen in a pre-season fixture. There was always likely to be an edge to it with Halifax manager Billy Heath returning to The Eon Visual Media with a number of the players who had so much success here. Overall, it was an entertaining and fairly even game, the major difference was in finishing. Halifax were clinical and scored three well-taken goals. Ferriby created a number of chances, but were less sure in front of goal. The first 20 minutes was fairly even. Jake Picton and Alberto Seidi went close for Ferriby. Dion Charles and Tom Denton went close at the other end. Charles was prominent throughout the game and was at the heart of many of the Shaymen’s attacks. As expected, Denton won many of the aerial battles. After 22 minutes, Danny Emerton hit a post for Ferriby only to see the ball quickly cleared to the other end where Denton ran on, before hitting a low shot past Ross Durrant. It was hard luck on The Villagers who found themselves a goal behind rather than a goal in front. Alberto and Joel Ambalu caused problems for the Halifax defence with their pace. The visitors were often forced to play the ball backwards or very hurriedly. The second Halifax goal came after 39 minutes when Denton’s header from a free-kick was hit home first time by Matty Kosylo. Both managers rang the changes in the second-half but, for once, the game remained entertaining despite the number of substitutions. Ferriby had the better of the first 10 minutes

of the half and went close through Emerton, Russ Fry and Alberto. However, as in the first-half it was Halifax who scored on 53 minutes with Bohan Dixon scoring with a low shot from just outside the area. After this, most of the chances fell to the visitors but they rarely came close to scoring. Halifax were grateful to keeper Sam Johnson who made a good one-handed reaction save from a close-range shot from Alberto. The scoreline probably flattered Halifax, but they deserved the win. VIEW FROM THE STANDS

VIEW FROM THE STANDS by Sam Shepherd Hello and welcome to another pre-season friendly at the Eon Visual Media Stadium. Tonight we entertain Rotherham, in what is sure to be another good test for us. The start of the season is now just around the corner and I can’t wait. Friendlies are ok, but we all know it’s more entertaining and nerve wracking when three points are at stake.

Since my last column we have had a couple of mixed results. We started with a 4-0 win away at Winterton Rangers. Danny Emerton scored twice and Alberto got on the score sheet as well as a trialist and this was arguably the best performance of pre-season. We followed that up with a 3-0 defeat, albeit against much tougher opposition in Halifax Town. Fax are newly promoted to the National League and they brought several familiar faces with them to the EVM Stadium. It was good to see the likes of Billy Heath, Bobby Carroll, Liam King, Tom Denton and others back at Ferriby because they are all legends of the club who are written into Ferriby folklore. Tom Denton got on the scoresheet for Halifax as they found it too easy to attack us at times. Defence is certainly an area we need to improve on if we are to be successful this season in the National League North. Things are looking promising going forward with Alberto and Danny Emerton in particular looking impressive in the friendlies so far. The defence has been shaky though, but we have Mark Gray to come back and that will be a big boost for us. It’s good for us to test ourselves against Football 22

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

League opposition again tonight in our final home friendly before the season starts. I am looking forward to the first game at Curzon Ashton and I hope to see as many Ferriby fans as possible there as we look to start the season with a positive result. It’s sure to be a challenging season as we know we certainly don’t have the biggest squad or the most money, but with signings like Russ Fry who bleeds green and white I’m confident we will be ok. The waiting is almost over and the season is almost upon us. It’s been a long summer, but soon our Saturdays will be back to normal and I can’t wait. See you at the Harrogate game next up at the EVM when we will hopefully already have three points on the board! Sam Shepherd North Ferriby United Supporter
