THE MANAGER
THE MANAGER
STEVE HOUSHAM May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Harrogate Town to the Eon Visual Media Stadium tonight, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome to our first home game of the season and welcome to Simon Weaver and Harrogate Town. Last Saturday saw us have our first league game of the new campaign and to say it was the worst possible start we had, would be an understatement. We found ourselves 2-0 down after only seven minutes giving us a mountain to climb and, to be fair to Curzon, they was well disciplined and stayed strong. They got a further two goals to add to our woes and our defending was not good enough. Yes it was alarming, but football is a funny old game and tonight we have the chance to put it right against a Harrogate side who are full-time and always well backed by their owners. It’s going to be another tough game against a side that should be fighting for honours come the end of season. Unfortunately we have Jake Picton out through suspension and Russ Fry with an ankle injury. Two experienced players who we need back. We had a fans forum last week and for those who was not there, it was a positive forum and again I would like to say sorry for the late notice of signings and announcements. Myself and Darryn were given a budget and
we just were not in a position to go and get the targets we wanted as we would probably have a five-a-side team. So we have had to wait and be patient, we have a lot of new players on board and have shown signs that we will be able to compete the best we can in games. I respect all these players because with travel to training and games they will be playing for nearly nothing, but they want to play and give there all for North Ferriby United. Up The Villagers! THE CAPTAIN
THE CAPTAIN Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium for another National League North fixture. Welcome back to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take to the field for the first time at home this season. I’m delighted to have been named captain again and I want to hopefully lead the lads to a successful season and also lead by example on the pitch. Having been injured since Christmas last season was tough, not just personally, but also for the team, as we looked to be turning things around at that time. Then me, along with a couple of others, picked up a few serious injuries and I think it had an impact on us. I had no doubts about signing again with North Ferriby United again as Steve Housham and Darryn Stamp have shown me great loyalty over the years and I think, after being injured for the back half of last season, I owe it to them to stay fit and give them a good season. The new lads that have come in look good and I can’t wait for the team to gel and get things going. It’s going to be a tough season with all the big budgets in the league, but I’m very confident we will hold our own for it to be a positive season. Stephen Brogan First-Team Captain 4

HARROGATE TOWN
North Ferriby United host Harrogate Town hoping to bounce back from an opening-day defeat. The Villagers travelled to Curzon Ashton last Saturday, but fell to a 4-0 defeat and their loss was compounded with the sending off of defender Mark Gray. With a return to familiar surroundings, manager Steve Housham hopes for a response. Speaking after the defeat Housham said: “We did play some good football and created chances. Their keeper made one great save that could have made a difference.” But Housham knows they will have to up
their game against a Harrogate Town side riding high on confidence. Town hosted Nuneaton Town and ran out convincing 4-0 winners. A George Thomson first-half header put Town ahead, before Jordan Thewlis’ secondhalf brace put Town in a commanding position. Simon Ainge, last season’s top scorer, added further gloss to the scoreline with an 82nd-minute penalty. Six summer signings were in the starting eleven, with James Belshaw, Ryan Fallowfield, Ben Middleton, Josh Falkingham, Thomson and Thewlis all involved from the off. HARROGATE TOWN
RECENT HISTORY
The inaugural 2004/05 Nationwide North season saw the club achieve more success, despite the shock mid-season departure of John Reed. Neil Aspin returned to Wetherby Road as the new manager having left the club at the end of the previous season, and an excellent 6th place finish was achieved. The 2005/06 season saw more success for Town; The FA Cup First Round proper was again reached, and Town were unfortunate to go out of the competition following a penalty shoot-out against Torquay United at Wetherby Road. A place in the Conference North promotion play-offs was secured on the final day of the season with a 1-0 win at Stafford Rangers, but just 3 days later the score was reversed against the same opposition in the semi-final. Neil Aspin left the club at the end of the 2008/09 season, and soon after Simon Weaver was appointed the club’s new manager. Having to operate on a severely restricted budget hampered the clubs progress during the 2009/2010 season and at the end the club finished in the unwanted bottom position of the league. However, with several clubs going bankrupt, Harrogate Town were handed a reprieve. The following season saw Town struggle around the mid to lower regions of the league and it took a ten match unbeaten
run to pull the club to safety and their final position of 12th. Despite a good start to the 2011-2012 season, Town once again hit a rocky patch and it took a 5-0 win over Corby Town on the final day of the season to guarantee safety and another crack at conquering the league. The 2012/2013 season turned out to be one of mixed fortunes; an amazing FA Cup run saw -ootball League side Torquay United defeated in the first round proper and only a penalty shoot-out following a replay prevented us from reaching the third round where Middlesbrough lied in wait. The 2015/16 season saw the club achieve their highest ever league finish as fourth place and a spot in the play-offs was secured in the National League North. The play-off semi-final pitted Town against AFC Fylde who secured a slender first leg lead with a 1-0 win at Wetherby Road that set the foundations to eliminate Harrogate after a 1-1 draw in the second leg at Kellamergh Park. The summer of 2016 saw the club lay a state of the art 3G pitch at the now named CNG Stadium allowing the club to avoid any weather disruptions and hire the venue out when not in use by the club. Towards the end of the 16/17 season, in which the club finished 11th, it was announced that Harrogate Town would be operating as a full time professional club from the start of the 2017/18 season. Ryan Fallowfield signed a two-year contract with Town in May 2017 in his second spell with the club. Capable of playing in multiple positions, Ryan initially joined on a threemonth loan deal that was eventually made permanent in 2015, before leaving to play for Ferriby.
The left-back signed for Town in June 2016 after captaining Guiseley AFC to promotion in 2015. Parker started his career with Leeds, and went on to make 41 appearances for the Whites. He also enjoyed loan spells at Bradford City, Darlington and Carlisle United before joining Guiseley in 2013.

JOE LEESLEY
LLOYD KERRY
WARREN BURRELL
Joe Leesley made the move to Town from Alfreton, where his performances had earned him a call up to the England ‘C’ squad. The wide man is blessed with the ability to use both feet, and possesses a wicked set piece delivery that has helped him to 23 assists and nine goals last term.
A skilled midfielder who has a knack for scoring important goals. When it was announced that he was looking for a new club after leaving Tamworth manager Simon Weaver made immediate contact and managed to convince Lloyd to make The CNG Stadium his new home.
In January 2016, midfielder Warren Burrell re-joined Harrogate Town following spells at Worksop Town, Leek Town and Sheffield FC. The athletic midfielder marked his return to The CNG Stadium by scoring twice in the 6-0 rout over Solihull Moors in January 2016.
DOMINIC KNOWLES
MARCUS DAY
SIMON AINGE
Knowles made an instant impact with Town fans when he signed on non-contract terms during the 2012/13 season. He scored ten goals in 12 appearances in a yellow and black shirt and fired the club towards the play-off places. Left to join Burton, but re-joined the CNG Stadium in 2015.
Following loan spells at local sides Wetherby Athletic and Harrogate Railway, young striker Marcus Day made his breakthrough into the first team during the 2016/17 season. Alongside a loan spell at Ossett Town, Day went on to make 19 appearances during the season.
Simon Ainge joined Town from Yorkshire rivals Bradford Park Avenue in the summer of 2016. Began as a defender, before moving to play up front really caught the eye, with 19 goals since the turn of the year, including four against Alfreton and hat-trick against AFC Fylde. MAN OF THE
MATCH Max LEONARD
Saturday 5 August 2017 | Tameside Stadium |
Ferriby could have few complaints at this defeat on their return to the Vanarama National League North. The Villagers got off to a dreadful start and defensive errors and missed chances meant there was no way back. With just three minutes played, Callum Rzonca conceded a free-kick which appeared to be a yard or two inside the area. However, the referee gave a free-kick on the edge. Justice was probably done when Max Leonard stroked the ball round the wall and in via Ross Durrant’s left-hand post. It got worse just four minutes later when a three-man move down the left ended with Leonard shooting past Durrant. Defensively, it was a poor goal to concede with at least two missed tackles in the build-up. To be fair to Ferriby, Curzon threatened little for the rest of the half. They seemed content to sit back and play on the break, often with long-balls for Joe Guest and Leonard. Ferriby eventually came back in to the game. They played some good football in midfield, but there were also too many occasions when passes were misplaced. Danny Emerton and Alberto Seidi looked good going forward and chances were created. Seidi hit a shot high, before Steve Brogan fired a free-kick in to the Curzon wall. An Emerton cross saw Seidi’s header 12
NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme
taken just under the bar by home keeper Cameron Mason. A good move down the left involving Seidi and Joel Ambula ended with Rzonca hitting a low shot that went just over the bar. Emerton then saw a low cross-shot drift past the far post, while Rzonca drew a diving save from Mason. The last twenty minutes of the first-half should have given The Villagers some hope, but any hopes of taking something from the game were dashed after 53 minutes. Sloppy defence at a free-kick allowed Niall Cummins to score with a first-time shot as the crosss came in. Emerton, again, was the provider for Seidi who stretched a leg to the winger’s cross and drew a diving save from Mason. That was the closest that The Villagers came to a goal in the second-half. Ferriby were reduced to 10 men after 74 minutes when Mark Gray was sent-off for a foul on Paul Marshall. There were no complaints about this decision which will cost Gray and Ferriby a three-match ban. Leonard had a chance to complete hattrick, but Ross Durrant pulled off a superb save. Durrant was Ferriby’s saviour late on when he produced an excellent double save. Matthew Crothers completed the scoring on 86 minutes with a powerful low shot from the corner of the penalty area.

VIEW FROM THE STANDS
VIEW FROM THE STANDS by Sam Shepherd Hello and welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium for tonight’s clash with Harrogate Town. It’s fair to say the season got off to a bad start on Saturday, as we were thumped 4-0 at Curzon Ashton. Losing in that manner obviously isn’t an ideal way to kick off the campaign and we need to see a big response from the lads tonight. The Villagers got off to a nightmare start and were 2-0 down after just seven minutes. Max Leonard helped himself to both goals on his competitive debut for Curzon and it looked like it was going to be a long afternoon for Ferriby. To their credit the lads dug in and worked their way back into the game. They created some good chances and enjoyed long spells of possession, but couldn’t convert that into goals. Danny Emerton caused problems all afternoon and he almost set up a goal, but neither Alberto or Joel Ambalu could get on the end of his low cross. Alberto then ballooned a shot over the bar, before Ambalu did brilliantly to tee up Callum Rzonca who shot just over the bar. Ferriby started the second half slowly and were punished when Niall Cummins capitalised on slack Ferriby defending to score a simple goal and seal the three points for the home side. Things got worse when Mark Gray recklessly dived into a challenge and was given his marching orders and rightly so, before Curzon put the icing 22
NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme
on their cake when Matthew Crothers scored a beautiful goal from wide on the left. Luckily Ferriby don’t have long to dwell on their 4-0 hammering on Saturday and they must improve tonight if they are to get anything out of the game especially in defence. All four of Curzon’s goals were avoidable and that will have annoyed Steve Housham. Housh messaged me after the game to apologise to travelling supporters and fair play to him for doing that. He knows what needs to be improved on and hopefully the lads can put some of that into practice tonight. A big performance is needed because the visitors Harrogate are being tipped for promotion this season. They also bring with them a couple of familiar faces. Ryan Fallowfield and Ben Middleton both swapped Ferriby for Harrogate in the summer and they haven’t had to wait long to return to the EVM Stadium. Harrogate got off to the perfect start on Saturday as they demolished Nuneaton 4-0 and they will be looking to continue that form tonight. Hopefully Ferriby have got the Curzon game out of their systems and can give Harrogate a real game tonight. Sam Shepherd North Ferriby United Supporter
