ISSUE 05 Welcome
Good evening everyone and welcome to the First Round of the Velocity Trophy – the new name for the Isthmian League Cup or Alan Turvey Trophy. It’s another cup competition for both ourselves and our visitors from Phoenix tonight after we both won through in the FA Cup on Saturday – congrats to them for that. There’s a number of former Mead players playing with Phoenix this season once again and to them a warm welcome to our clubs new home.
In tonight’s Mead, OB makes his season’s debut and reflects on our cup win at the weekend; Carly gives us the update from the treatment table; there’s the thoughts of skipper Leon and the first pictures of that FA Cup win over Lewes. Don’t forget we’re back here at the weekend BUT on Sunday rather than Saturday… So put the roast’s back until tea-time and we’ll see you all on Sunday afternoon. Enjoy the game and safe trip home Greenie

ALEX O’BRIEN THE ASSISTANT
Good evening everyone and welcome to Phoenix Sports for tonight’s League Cup tie. What we’re trying to achieve is work-rate and I’m delighted that we’re getting that, which has been shown in the way we’re playing so far this season. We’ve been starting games well on the front foot and when we do that and pass the ball on the ground we are a really, good side. But we’re not getting carried away and our feet are firmly on the ground as there’s a lot more work and a lot more player progress to come yet and we have to be very pleased with the way that the boys have adapted to Tom’s instructions so far – but it’s only a start! I remember when Tony Burman first invited me when I was still playing and he was looking to sign me to come and see the new ground as it was then. I swear to this day that my answer was that all football
WWW.TTFCOFFICIAL.ORG
pitches are the same and at the time I really didn’t buy into it. But you only have look around to see why the chairman decided to move here – it really is a lovely place to play and believe me that it’s only when you finish that you realise just what a great place it is to play! We now get to do it every other week and it’s important that the players embrace that and secure it as a fortress. I’m sure that Tony and his staff are the same with his current Dartford side too – they don’t want to be beaten at home and neither do we! I don’t know what it is about League Cups where players, who perhaps haven’t had the minutes last week, may well feature this evening. I guess it filters down from the pro game and the Premier League where teams don’t
want to play in the League Cup and play squad players. But the bottom line it’s a Cup and Cups are there to be won! I was asked about our Saturday off this week – really, you know I’m sure we’ll be somewhere as we’re not playing. Football can be played any day of the week – it shouldn’t matter as players get a routine and get on with it, and all the players that we have here know that sometimes we’ll play on a Wednesday, sometimes we’ll play on a Tuesday, sometimes we’ll play on a Sunday, sometimes we’ll play on a Saturday and they’re happy to do it – they just get on with it – it’s not a problem for us. Enjoy tonight and we’ll see you in the bar after the game. Alex O’Brien First-Team Assistant Manager

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Princes Park as we go back on the Cup trail. Good evening everyone. It was a really good win on Saturday which has seen us progress another step in the FA Cup. We were quick out of the blocks and Vinesy had us ahead with a great header in the first thirty seconds. He scored his second from a penalty and we settled down nicely and played some good football.
And so Billericay are up next after Monday’s draw and what a game that will be – another tough game, but a great one to play in as the whole competition is, and a great day for all at the club.
Thanks for your support – YOU DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE Leon Smith First-Team Captain
But we have two important games before then of course.
Again, I think, we came out slightly off the pedal at the beginning of the second half, but we worked our way back as a team with some good stuff played in midfield from Tom and Kinchy as well as another clean sheet for the defence thanks to a great save from Lewis.
And that starts tonight – it’s yet another Cup competition against a Phoenix side who themselves won through in the Cup at the weekend.
Our subs came on and helped keep the momentum build again and a third final goal from Tash sealed a great win.
Let’s hope it’ll be us making the progress tonight – don’t

forget we’re here again on Sunday.

CARLY & RHYANNA THE physios
Good afternoon all and welcome to Princes Park for another home game of the 2017/2018 season. It’s been a bitter sweet week couple of games for the boys beating Horsham 5-0 on Saturday and then losing to local rivals in the blistering heat on Monday. We recently saw the muchanticipated return of Bode back into the starting line up and he marked his season debut with a goal! Well done Bodes! As those of you who joined us last week would have seen, Laurent was back in the squad after coming off injured during our home game at Hythe a few weeks ago. An unlucky collision with another Mead player saw Laurent substituted early on and taken to hospital as a precaution, he was given the all clear after an x-ray of his ribs confirmed no breaks.
Simon Glover also came off injured that night with a hamstring complaint, but we are hopeful he will return to the squad imminently. Thankfully that’s all from us injury wise! We look forward to seeing you all in the bar after the game to celebrate the boys progress into the next round (hopefully!) Good luck today lads! Carly & Rhyanna First-Team Physios

PHOENIX SPORTS
CLUB HISTORY Formed in 1935, Phoenix Sports Club originally started out as St. Johns Welling, later changing its name to Lakeside, before renaming to Phoenix following the Second World War as it was seen to rise from the ashes of the previous two clubs amidst the destruction caused by the blitz. Over the years the club has played at various locations in the local area, including Danson Park until 1950 when the local council offered them a piece of waste land in Mayplace Road East, Bexleyheath. Over time it evolved into the ground that we all know now as The Club. After entering various leagues, including the Sidcup League, Kent Amateur League and the Dartford League, the club settled in the Kent County League Division One West, finishing as runners up twice in the 1950’s and once in the 70’s. Due to financial difficulties, Phoenix were forced to form a Limited Company and adopt the name PHOENIX SPORTS CLUB In the 1986/7 season, the club entered the Spartan League and competed there for six seasons. They then returned to the Kent County League - Division One West. In 1999/2000 we won the league, gaining promotion to the Premier Division, however after two relegations ended up in Division Two West, finally returning to the first division in 2004/05, and then back to the Premier Division in 2007/08. Over the years various honours have come our way, but unfortunately records are fairly sparse. However, we have won the Hospitals Charity Cup Division 1 twice in recent seasons. In recent years, we have seen a steady improvement in the standard
of senior football. These changes resulted in the first team winning the Kent County Football League Division Two title, The West Kent Challenge Shield, The Hospitals Charity Cup and the Kent Junior Cup, in the 2004/05 season. The team maintained steady progress to win the Division One Championship and promotion to the Premier Division, and also the West Kent Challenge Shield and Hospitals Chairty Cup again, followed by a win in the KVFA Intermediate Challenge Shield. After three seasons in the Premier Division, the first team became founder members of the Kent Invicta League at step 6 of the National League System (Step 10 of the English Football League System) – the highest level of football the club has ever played at. We went on to finish runners up, missing out by only two points to eventual champions Bly Spartans as well as reaching the League Cup Final, again losing out. The reserves also had a good season that year, winning Division Two of the Kent Hurliman League and were finalists in the Kent Intermediate Cup. This past season our third senior team (The A Team) gained entry into the Kent County League, winning Reserve Division West and reaching the final of the KCFA Junior Cup group A and the Hospitals Charity Cup. Unfortunately, the 1st team and Reserve team Management both decided to resign for personal reasons at the end of season 20112012. After an exhaustive process we appointed Steve O’Boyle and Tony Beckingham as Joint 1st Team Managers, and John Hope as Manager for the Reserves assisted by Brian Magenis and John Barry.
After a successful first campaign under the new management structure and after losing only two league games all season, Phoenix won the Kent Invicta league and gained promotion to the Kent League to play at step 5 of the National League System and finished in sixth place in our inaugural season. We aspired to a higher finish, hoping for maybe 4th spot, for the next season. We had a very good start to the season but unfortunately lost in our first ever appearance in the FA Cup. Losing on penalties after a replay. In the League we managed to lose only 1 game all season and accumulating 30 clean sheets. Due to these performances we managed to win the League quite comfortably in the end, although there were a few sticky moments. These achievements meant that we also had to work miracles off the pitch, but we eventually managed to get all the necessary works done in time to gain D Grade and promotion to The Ryman League North Division. After a long 1st season, we managed to finish in 14th place of 24 teams. This can only be classed as a great result for the club. We now try to push on for another good season and hopefully a higher place finish, although we will not now be an unknown quantity. After another hard season where we were in and around the play off places for most of it, we were cursed by Boyley winning the Manager of the Month award for March, and managed to go the rest of the season without picking up another point, and finishing in 8th place. We were also the subject of a lateral movement at the season end, so will be competing in the newly sponsored Bostik League South.
