BOWDEN-BROWN May I sincerely welcome the directors, officials, players and supporters from Tilbury FC to our home Sporting Club Thamesmead for this Tuesday evening Ryman North league game, and after the match they enjoy some refreshments before having a safe journey home. I would also welcome all of our community season ticket holders, and apologise for those that may have had to pay to watch the FA Cup match on Saturday but

unfortunately FA rules state all must pay on the day. Well here we are back in league action after the FA Cup match last Saturday, when we entertained Chertsey at the SCT. It was a very tense game that could have gone either way in my opinion, but after some good and positive work throughout the game from the squad we came away with a 1-0 win and our name is in the hat for the draw of which our opponent is not yet known due to printer

constraints. In our last league game, we scored three goals and came away with a scoreline reading 3-3, I feel that this is unacceptable with the squad we have here at the club especially when you are the home team. In my experience it’s these points that we drop throughout the season which could make the difference of being in or out of the play-offs during the last month of the

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

season. But as I have said on a number of occasion my first-team manager Tommy Warrilow is working very hard bringing in new players to strengthen the squad where he thinks it is required but I am sure it will not be long before he has a settled squad that he will use to his full advantage so watch this space. Well here we are a few weeks away from the start of the academy season, and we have with the help of Ian Docker my director of football/ academy manager and Gary my manager of the under-21s bought the pupil numbers up to an acceptable level, to allow Ian to be able to put out one team from a squad of capable players. I know it’s come around quickly but Ian and his squad had their first game which was a FA Youth Cup match played against Folkestone FC a team that has been playing together longer than ours but whatever the score I am just pleased that we are in a position to put out a side. Had you asked me if we were going to run the academy this season, I would have probably said no but that’s football things change day to day. At the same time

Ian is also running a satellite academy section this season at a local college, we are looking to see how this works if it is successful we will be looking to have a long term partnership set up as it gives an alternative education package that the club can offer I feel that this is very important for the success of any academy, the alternative option for the pupil. This season we have a number of new initiatives involving our work within the local community and one of them involves working in partnership with the local police, and I must thank Gary Ryan for all of his efforts to make sure that this initiative is working. So let’s see if our efforts are mirrored with the involvement of those youths that the initiative is aimed at, as I have said on many occasions as chairman & owner of this club as long as I am involved I will ensure that this club works within the local community giving coaching FOC to all those that would like to take part. Hopefully this will only be the beginning of many more such initiatives that will ensure that the club colours are being worn throughout the

community. So after all of the changes within the club during the close season some accepted within our business plan others not, one of those not and it has been well documented that we have had our youth teams leave and join our landlords new club that they have set up. They are not in competition with us so I am not too worried but at least now I know that I can concentrate on the first-team, the under21s and the academy team, with no youth distractions, but it is both Ian and my objective to have a pre-academy set up in full operation ready for the season 2017-18. This will not replace the youth sections that we have lost, but be a completely new set up for those young players that in time want to take the route through to an academy. Once again my sincere thanks to Ian Docker for his continued support. Now let’s enjoy the football. Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

MANAGER’S NOTES

Tommy

WARRILOW Good evening everyone as we return to the bread and butter of the League as we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Tilbury to Bayliss Avenue for what promises to be another really tough game. Saturday saw us progress in the FA Cup, and let’s face it a win is a win, and we were in the hat for the next round. I didn’t want to put any kind of dampener on the triumph, so I just asked the boys in the dressing room who thought that they’d had a good game. I just wanted them to think about it as if we play like that week in and week out the chances are that

06

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

we’ll lose more than we win. Don’t get me wrong we did OK – firsthalf was alright and we did OK but second-half we made hard work of it despite having some good opportunities – I know they did – but we had some good chances to again kill the game off. We’ve had two “one-on-one’s” and a free header which is frustrating as the second goal gives you that little bit of leeway. Chertsey had nothing to lose coming from a league below, and fair play to them – they’ve probably gone home feeling that they should have got something out of the game.

I don’t really care who we’ve drawn in the next round – the main thing about the FA Cup is trying to get the club as much prize money as we can to help the chairman out as much as possible. So far we’ve done alright with the two games with Guernsey and then Saturday with the prize money – I’m not really fussed to be honest who we’ve drawn! We’ll give everyone the same respect – as we’ve done with both Guernsey and Chertsey – and we’ll do our homework as though we’re playing a league side, but I know that if our lads do as they’ve been told we’ll give it our best shot.

MANAGER’S NOTES

will week in week out. And that’s been my main issue at the moment – when we switch off we don’t do the basics. There’s still a little bit of sloppiness that still kicks in which we need to eradicate and get the levels to where they should be and where I want us to be. They all know that Saturday we could have done better, but the most important thing as I’ve already said was to get the result. Tilbury will come into tonight’s game looking for a reaction from Saturday. Results like theirs can always happen in the FA Cup which is another reason to be pleased with our result. Tilbury always offers tough opposition whenever you play them, and one thing that we do know is that they will give everything and that they

But if we can stay organised and do what we do, I haven’t got a problem with who we play, we’ve just got to make sure that when we manage the game and create chances we take them. We’ve another difficult week ahead of us as we’re playing Bury Town here at the weekend and so once again, your support is invaluable to all of us, and we all thank you for it. Don’t forget we’ll see you in the bar after the game… Thanks for your support and enjoy the game! Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

The Mead face a Tilbury side who have picked up four points from their opening four games beating Dereham Town and drawing with Thurrock. THE OPPOSITION

CLUB HISTORY Tilbury F.C. now have concrete proof that they were formed in 1889, and competed in the Gravesend League from 1889/1890.

World War and then on a new home ground, the present Chadfields in 1947/48, and embarked upon a four season spell of much success and National recognition.

At the end of the 1910/11 season, the club also lost its home ground, and the Committee decided that the club should take a break . The intended short break stretched to three seasons, and was then further extended by the outbreak of the First World War. As a result, it was not until 1919/20 that Tilbury were able to resume, this time in the South Essex League.

In 1950/51 Tilbury moved into the Corinthian League. The move into the Corinthian ranks had coincided with the gradual break up of the successful but ageing post-War side. The move back to the London League now coincided with the coming together of an extremely talented bunch of local young players that brought great success in the coming seasons.

During the Summer of 1926/27, they were granted Senior status by the Essex FA. Disaster almost struck however. Application was made to several Leagues but, one by one, they were all rejected, and it looked as though Tilbury were doomed. At the very last moment, the Kent League stepped in and offered them a place, which was eagerly accepted.

In 1957/58, Tilbury finished 3rd in the London League, but in each of the next 4 campaigns were the undisputed Champions.

Off the field the 4 seasons spent in the Kent League were a success. It was an off-field matter, though, that led to them eventually leaving the competition. The league had expanded in size greatly since Tilbury joined, and added to the difficulty of continually crossing the Thames was the end of season fixture congestion. At the end of the 1930/31 season, the committee very reluctantly took the decision that the club would have to move on. They made an application to join the London League, one of those that had rejected them 4 years earlier, and this time were accepted. Tilbury resumed in the London League in 1946/47 after the Second

14

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

1962/63 saw Tilbury move into the Delphian League. This was to coincide with that League’s last ever season. In 1963/64, that League joined the expanded Athenian League set up, becoming the bottom Division of a 3 Division set up. Tilbury were inaugural Champions of Division Two, also winning the Essex Senior Cup again. 5 seasons later, they completed the climb to the Premier Division, by winning the Division One championship. 5 seasons were spent in the Athenian Premier Division before, in 1973/74, they joined the newly formed Isthmian League Division Two. In 1974/75, they were the Division One Champions. 5th place in their first Premier Division season was the best Tilbury could achieve in their 5 season stay, before being relegated back to Division One.

Since then, Tilbury have found things tough. They have suffered relegation on several occasions, but have mostly bounced back fairly quickly. In 2004/05, Tilbury finished their one season in the Southern League Division One East in rock bottom position, and were relegated to the Essex Senior League. They bounced back immediately, and earned a return to Isthmian ranks, and have managed to remain there since. 2011/12 saw Tilbury greatly exceed their expectations, as Vaughan’s squad stayed in and around the promotion race all season, clinching a play-off place with a game to spare. Sadly, though, it ended in extra time defeat against Needham Market. The last two seasons again saw Tilbury performing creditably. In both closeseasons they lost a number of players, and had to rebuild. Once again, this summer, Tilbury have seen a number of senior players leave the club. Unfortunately, a combination of a crippling early season injury list and poor form saw Paul Vaughan stepped down as Manager in October to be replaced by Gary Henty. This brought about an almost immediate upturn in form and results, which saw the Club climb away from the relegation zone to finish in comfortable mid-table security. Tilbury finished that season in a comfortable lower mid-table position, but showed great improvement in 2015/16, at one time being as high as 5th but eventually finished the season 11th.
