THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

STEVE HOUSHAM May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Brackley Town to the Eon Visual Media Stadium this afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome back to another home game at the Eon Visual Media Stadium. First of all, on the back of defeat against Curzon Ashton in the opening game of the season, I asked for a response. That was delivered against Harrogate Town on Tuesday night and I thought defensively we did well. We put our bodies on line when needed, which was an improvement from the Curzon Ashton fixture. I would have liked us to keep the ball better, but the effort was there. Football is about key chances and if Alberto scores his opportunity on the stroke of half-time, it’s a different game. Harrogate eventually got through our back line and I had no argument with the penalty and you could see the heads go a bit. We then conceded from another set-piece, but I saw a better improvement from the lads and they need to not drop from them standards. Today we take on Brackley, who have started with two wins, so it’s going to be another difficult test for us, but I’ve said to the lads if teams beat us I want to make sure that they

have been in a tough game. As I’ve said before, I have so much respect for my players for what they do. Especially when you see some teams’ spending the way they do. All you have to do is look at Billericay Town, who are a step below us and spending what they are! Football is getting crazy in that way, when will it ever stop? For me, personally, I would like to see a salary cap for each league, but will that ever happen? I don’t think so. I would like to thank you, the fans, for braving the elements on Tuesday night and I’m sorry we couldn’t get the result your support deserved. We always knew it was going to be a tough season ahead of us, but there is no way we will lay down and die in games. We will give everything we have to give you something to cheer about and make sure we put in performances your support deserves. Up the Villagers! THE CAPTAIN

THE CAPTAIN Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Brackley Town in the National League North. A warm welcome back to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Brackley Town. We started the season away at Curzon Ashton and it was a disappointing start to the new campaign. To concede two early goals like we did, killed us and left us with a real mountain to climb. That said, I thought on Tuesday night we responded well against a Harrogate Town side flying high in the division. The team gave everything, but came up just short in the end losing 2-0 in appalling conditions. Maybe if a couple of chances went our way the game could of been different, but it wasn’t to be. I’m confident that the group we have will be fine this season and hopefully three points against Brackley Town this afternoon can kick start our season. Brackley have started the new term very well, but here at home we need to make it as difficult as we can for teams to come and pick points up. Stephen Brogan First-Team Captain

BRACKLEY TOWN

Hoping to make it three wins on the trot, Brackley Town travel to the Eon Visual Media Stadium full of confidence. Town opened the new campaign with a tricky home match with FC United Of Manchester, but bossed much of a game that had an early-season feel to it, as both struggled to find their rhythm. Saints finally made their dominance count taking the lead through James Armson in the 51st minute. Adam Walker’s surging run into the penalty area set up the chance and Armson made no mistake converting from close range. FC United pegged the hosts back in the

74th minute, but Brackley hit back within three minutes thanks to Andy Brown. Brackley then travelled to AFC Telford United in midweek and their strong performances continued. The opening goal came via Brown, before former Saint Jordan Gough turned the ball into his own net after good work from Glenn Walker. The lead was increased when Ndlovu headed past Jasbir Singh in the Telford goal. Telford pulled a goal back after 65 minutes as Ellis Myles turned a cross past Lewis for an own goal but the final outcome was not in doubt as Saints recorded back-to-back wins. BRACKLEY TOWN

RECENT HISTORY

The 2009/10 season saw the side in the top three for nearly the whole campaign and an eventual 5th-placed finish and defeat in the end of season play-off semi final. 2010/11 ended in a 9th-placed finish but a first ever Senior Cup win which was followed by victory in the County Maunsell Cup, defeating Northampton Town in early July. 2011/12 saw arguably the most successful season in the club’s history culminating in winning the Southern League Premier Division and a second Senior Cup victory. The team lifted the Southern League shield at a jubilant St James Park after a 6-0 thrashing of St Albans City. The new season had seen the start of major ground improvements including new changing rooms, terracing, improved parking and the upgrading of the floodlights. The first season in the Football Conference began with a 4-1 at Altrincham to announce the arrival of Brackley Town at Step 2 and saw the side make it all the way to the play-off final losing by a single goal to FC Halifax Town at St James Park. The 2013/14 season brought a 7th-placed finish and FA Cup success beating Division One Gillingham at St James Park in a 1st round replay on live TV. The addition of an artificial grass pitch was a further big boost to the club as it expanded its community programme. The last two seasons have ended in fairytale escapes at the wrong of the table with

last day wins. In April 2015 only three wins from three could save the Saints and, with two wins in the bag, a 1-0 home win over Hednesford on the final day of the season courtesy of Ryan Rowe’s stunning late strike saved the day against all odds. Jon Brady’s time in charge ended in October 2015 with ex-Chelsea defender Frank Sinclair taking temporary charge before former Cobblers striker and Nuneaton and Wrexham manager Kevin Wilkin was appointed to the hot seat. Wilkin led an FA Cup charge to the first round, losing only in a replay at league side Newport County, but the team laboured at the wrong end of the table until only a last day combination of a Brackley win at home against Tamworth and results elsewhere going their way would be enough to maintain National League status. For a second successive season the remarkable happened and Glenn Walker’s goal allied to Lowestoft’s inability to beat Gloucester City brought another heartstopping afternoon that ultimately saw the Saints survive on goal difference only. Last season was one to remember with an FA Cup run that saw the Saints beat Gillingham 4-3 in a televised tie and play Blackpool away. In the Trophy Brackley progressed to the quarter finals where they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by eventual winners York City. The League saw us finish 1 point off the play-offs with a finish of seventh.

MATCH Jordan THEWLIS

Tuesday 8 August 2017 | Eon Visual Media Stadium | Att: 274 The result was another disappointment for Ferriby, but the performance was much better than at Curzon Ashton on Saturday. The game was played in appalling conditions with a driving wind and heavy rain throughout. By the end, players were splashing up water as they went in to challenges. Despite the weather, this was an entertaining game. It was also feisty and, at times, quite niggly. Harrogate played with the wind at their backs in the first-half, but really could not take advantage of it. The strong and swirling wind made life difficult for Ferriby’s defenders in particular. The visitors shaded the first-half in terms of possession and territory, but Ferriby pretty much gave as good as they got. Ross Durrant clawed the ball away from the top corner after seven minutes from a curling George Thompson free-kick. Five minutes later, Bobby Johnson, who had a good game for The Villagers, blocked a Jack Emmett shot. This was followed shortly after by a Jordan Thewlis shot that went straight to Durrant. Town keeper James Belshaw had to hurry out of his area to clear ahead of Alberto Seidi and then the keeper held a Seidi shot. Man-of-the-match Thewlis should have scored on 35 minutes in a one-on-one with Durrant but the keeper spread himself to save. Steve Brogan had free-kick deflected for a corner and on the stroke of half-time Seidi saw Belshaw save in a one-on-one.

12

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

Ferriby’s first-half performance should have given them some hope and encouragement, but it was Harrogate who, by and large, controlled the second-half. Thewis drew a save from Durrant after 53 minutes and was instrumental in the penalty after 59 minutes. Durrant slid to take the ball from Thewlis, but caught him and the referee decided it was enough for a penalty. The decision was perhaps a little harsh given the condition of the surface. That did not stop Simon Ainge driving the penalty low to Durrant’s left and just beyond his full length dive. The game was settled five minutes later when a Thewlis corner was only partially cleared and Joe Leesley hit home an angled shot through a crowded area. Harrogate were pretty much in control from this point but only managed another couple of on-target shots. Ferriby had little to offer in the way of goal threat in the second-half although Seidi, Joe Pugh and then Ambalu, plus Danny Emerton frequently caused panic in the Town defence. In the end, Town deserved the victory but they were made to work hard for it. Manager Steve Housham commented, “I asked the boys for a response [after Saturday’s defeat] and I got one. Overall I was pleased with the way we played. Mark Gray and Jake Skelton were tremendous at the back in very difficult conditions. “The result is obviously disappointing but we can take encouragement from the game.”

VIEW FROM THE STANDS

VIEW FROM THE STANDS by Sam Shepherd Hello and welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium for our second home game in a week. It’s fair to say it’s been a difficult start to the season so far. Zero goals scored, six conceded and two defeats does not make for pleasant reading. The opening game at Curzon was a bit of a disaster, especially defensively and Steve Housham was understandably disappointed afterwards. To his credit Housh personally apologised to the travelling Ferriby supporters and promised to do his upmost to turn things around. Unfortunately, though, our opponents on Tuesday night were promotion-chasing Harrogate Town. The full-time outfit came to Ferriby as red-hot favourites and, despite the awful weather conditions, they dominated much of the game. Ferriby battled hard, but their lack of a physical presence cost them as Harrogate got on top of them in the rain. Ferriby did miss a glorious chance to take the lead just before half-time when Alberto was put through one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but his tame shot was easily saved. Harrogate made Ferriby pay for that missed chance and scored twice in the second-half to take the three points. It was a much-improved performance from 22

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

Saturday, but wasn’t enough against topquality opposition. Housham’s side looked more defensively solid than they did at Curzon, but they are certainly lacking a clinical edge up front. I don’t want to be too harsh on the side at this early stage and we all hope things can turn around quickly. With the massive turnover of players we witnessed during the summer and the youthful nature of the squad the slow start is perhaps not surprising. This is a very tough league, though, and we need to start picking up points quickly to avoid being rooted in the bottom three. Today we welcome Brackley Town to the EVM Stadium. We have played Brackley a fair few times in the past and have mixed results against them. They have got off to a blistering start this season with two impressive wins from their opening two games. They had a solid season last year and are looking to improve on that this season. They are not always the best on the road, so today could be an opportunity to pick up our first points of the season ahead of our trip to Alfreton on Tuesday. Get behind the lads today they need your support and we will get off the mark soon! Enjoy the game! Sam Shepherd North Ferriby United Supporter
