BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Bury Town FC to our home at SCT, on this September Saturday afternoon, and after their long journey from Bury. I hope they can enjoy some hospitality, and after an enjoyable game they all have a safe return journey home. May I also personally once again take this opportunity to welcome all those local resident’s that have decided to join us as new supporters through our season ticket initiative this season. I know that the benefit of the £30.00 Season Ticket for 4 has

04

made a lot of difference to the families that are involved at this time with this initiative, and I hope during the next few weeks we have more families join us and become new supporters. Whilst talking about the community we are in the process of joining in a partnership with the local Police to supply FOC coaching to the young people of Thamesmead in and around the town, with the areas called “The Caged Areas”. These are areas with pitches/ courts marked out either on a sports surface or concrete. We wholeheartedly believe that

it is our responsibility as a main function of the community to put our weight behind ensuring that anti-social behaviour is greatly reduced, and hope by our efforts and with the assistance of the local Police we can ensure Thamesmead is a safer and better place for the community to live and work. At this time, I would like to thank both Gary and Mike together with PC Chris Molnar for all of their efforts to get this initiative off the ground, I am intending to advise the Peabody Group of our intention to ensure that it is fully publicized and supported by them, so please watch this space.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

Well we entertained Tilbury FC here last Tuesday and we all knew due to previous encounters that it would be a very difficult game, but I personally thought we would ensure we kept our home record this season and edge the result.

With today’s opponents Bury coming here sitting at the top of the league with 14 points, it will be a difficult game if our previous encounters are to be mirrored, as in my opinion they never give up as their league positions show.

But unfortunately this was not the way the game went and we lost 1-0. This in my opinion was a very disappointing and frustrating game to watch for me, of course as a supporter as well as the chairman of this club I want to see my team win every match but in reality unfortunately this does not happen.

But as always we will have done our homework and prepared accordingly so let’s all have faith and wish the boys well, because we know when we are firing on all cylinders we have a winning team.

But there was something not quite right with our game on Tuesday evening, by saying this I am not criticizing any players or their commitment, but as I said in last week’s programme notes, any points dropped during the early months could be the ones that are needed to ensure that we are in the Play-Offs. So as a supporter it was a very frustrating match to watch because you could not put your finger on the cause of losing, but hopefully Tommy and his management team will deal with whatever they feel is the cause during training, because I know he puts his whole heart into the game 24/7 and has an immense experience within Non-League Football so I am not as of yet worried just as I said frustrated.

Finally, here we are with our academy term starting next week, and to be honest I did not think we would be running the academy this year, so my thanks go to Ian Docker my academy manager, and Gary Ryan under21s manager for all of their efforts to ensure that we reached the pupil viability. So once again we look forward to ensuring these young pupils that have signed for the academy receive the best education from our provider SCL and will under Ian’s leadership they will receive first class coaching and an insight to becoming a professional footballer. So I wish one and all the very best for the term. Now let’s enjoy the football. Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

MANAGER’S NOTES

Tommy

WARRILOW Hello everyone and welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Bury Town for this afternoon’s game. I was disappointed to lose Tuesday night against Tilbury as I didn’t think we played badly. We got into some good areas although in the second-half in particular our final ball wasn’t good – I think I counted about ten crosses that went into the box at a comfortable height for their keeper. We’ve got to mix things up a

bit, and even at the end when we were getting into some good areas the ball wasn’t good enough. We’ve lost to a header from a corner – a set-piece has undone us yet again but I thought that on the plus side we got into enough good areas to score. I think if you ask anyone who saw the game for “Man of the Match” it would have been their keeper and that I think says a lot. We didn’t back Vinesy up enough when we hit him and didn’t use the ball well enough in the wide areas and at the end of the day

that’s the end-product that we haven’t got yet! Even when we got the penalty, I wasn’t one hundred percent that we were going to score – it summed the night up. We had a few ricochets in the box that didn’t go for us – if we’d have been poor then we’d have deserved to lose, but I didn’t think were. We lost a game of football and know that there are some areas that we need to work on. We didn’t play as well against Chertsey in the FA Cup last week

MANAGER’S NOTES

and won, but as I said to the lads after Tuesday’s game – that’s football! We played better against Tilbury and got nothing – there are still areas that we can and will improve on, and we’ve had a relatively good start to what’s going to be a long hard season. We worked on things Thursday night at training before we go again today against Bury Town. I haven’t seen Bury for a few seasons, but when I was at Tonbridge they were always a good outfit in the Ryman Premier and it might suit us playing a side like that. We’ve got to become more of a Ryman North side and add something physical to our game.

We welcomed Aaron Rhule to the squad on Tuesday – he’s only 22 and was in Bromley’s first team at 16 and so we’ve known him from there. His season hasn’t really got going and so I’m delighted to have him on board – we’ve got to get him fit but he is a very good player. I’m still looking at a couple more, but I’m having to be patient. After six or seven games you normally see players losing clubs and moving around – I think I’ve been fair and given everyone a chance. Sadly to get Aaron in I’ve released Luke Coleman, and wish him well.

its football and if I didn’t do that I wouldn’t be doing my job. I want to improve us and I thought that as I’ve said I didn’t think that we were poor by any means on Tuesday, but we did lose the game so we’ve got to accept any criticism that comes – we know the areas that we need to improve on and hopefully we’ll be doing that in the next few weeks. Thanks as always for your great support and backing – enjoy today’s game and we’ll see you in the bar afterwards as usual, Enjoy the game! Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

THE UNDER-21S

THE

UNDER-21s Well it seems like the last few weeks has been all FA Cup games...

The first-teams heroics at home and away to Guernsey and then Monday nights FA Youth Cup game at home to Folkestone Invicta. Some would say it’s a stressful time I would say they are the games and times that show me why I love the game so much! And you know it’s been an honour to be part of it! Monday’s FA youth cup game was a fantastic showcase for the competition, and is spoken about in greater length elsewhere in today’s programme. All that I’ll say is that we couldn’t have asked no more from the lads. They competed for the whole 90 minutes and just come up short losing 4-3 to an experienced side. Now for the “day-job” and the under21’s! When you read these notes, I’ll be with the boys on the Essex coast. I won’t be around today as we’ve got a rare Saturday game and a very tough fixture away to Brightlingsea Regent. We’ve added a couple of players to the squad who I personally believe have the ability to not only break into our under-21’s squad but will have the opportunity to break into the

10

first-team.

Ian and I are also in talks regarding the possibility of adding a couple of our academy lads into the under-21s in the next week or so after their season begins next Wednesday. We’ve got some great young talent at this club and with the right directives I’m sure we’ll see a few progress this season. On a club front, I’m in talks with the chairman and our director of football regarding a project we hope to make public very soon. Greenie and I are currently working on something that I hope will bring Thamesmead closer together in the future. We’re both really excited and determined to make our new scheme as successful as we deserve as a club/community. There’s still some “I’s” to dot and “T’s” to cross but all I can say for now is that there’s some exciting times ahead for all of us involved with Thamesmead Town Football Club. All the best to Tommy, OB, the staff and players for today’s game. Gary Ryan Under-21s Manager

SECRETARY’S COLUMN

FROM THE

SECRETARY’S DESK

We welcome Bury Town today for our latest Ryman League fixture, I hope they enjoy their brief stay with us today. We progressed into the 2nd qualifying round of the FA Cup last weekend, a hard fought one nil victory over Chertsey Town saw us rewarded with another visit to Hanwell Town in the next round, we will later this year visit them again in the London Senior Cup. On Tuesday we welcomed Tilbury to SCT for a Ryman League fixture which is always a tough match. Tilbury were their normal well

organised unit tough to break down at the back and they played some nice football. I thought we played quite well, we are struggling to score at the moment despite creating chances, this was unfortunately summed up in Paul Vines penalty miss late in the match on Tuesday which would have earned us a point. On Monday evening we hosted Folkestone Invicta in the FA Youth Cup, it was exciting end to end stuff we went into a 3-1 lead but Folkestone were a little bit stronger and having pegged us back to 3-3

before going onto score a late winner to go through 4-3, but it was an outstanding performance from the team and we were unlucky on the night. Today’s opponents Bury Town have made a good start to the season, they will be looking for 3 points here today to take back to Suffolk, hopefully we can continue to improve and I know Tommy is looking to add to the squad to strengthen it up. Enjoy the game. Dave Joy Club Secretary

BURY TOWN

Facing arguably our biggest test so far, Thamesmead Town host top of the table Bury Town.

The Mead, who dropped to 12th in the table following their 1-0 loss to Tilbury, now face the unenviable task of trying to beat table topping Bury Town. The club have enjoyed a solid start to the season picking up four wins and two draws from their opening six games of the campaign. Oliver Hughes’ 24th minute strike on the opening day was enough to beat

14

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

Dereham Town before a 1-1 draw with Great Wakering Rovers.

Witham Town provided a sterner test but Bury prevailed with the three points winning 3-2. The club showed their steel coming back from a goal down against Waltham Abbey to win 2-1. Next up was Wroxham who proved no match as they beat the club 3-0 before drawing 2-2 last time out with Ware. The only blemish on their season so far is exiting the FA Cup at the hands of Spalding United in a 3-0 defeat.

CLUB HISTORY Founded in 1872, Bury Town Football Club is one of the oldest Football Club’s in the country and has a proud history dating back over 130 years.

The club was founded by Mr William Lake at a meeting in the Suffolk Hotel. The original name of the club was Bury St Edmunds FC and the first committee of the club elected to choose royal blue as the club’s colours. The club took up residence at Kings Road, also know as the Cemetery Road ground, in 1888. The club was one of 11 founder members of the Suffolk County Football Association in 1885 and has won the Suffolk Premier Cup on 10 occasions. The clubs name was changed by a vote to Bury Town in September 1885, however 10 years later the members chose to adopt the full name of the Town back as the name, before changing to Bury United in 1908. In 1923 the clubs members decided that the name ‘United’ was no longer appropriate as there were a number of sides in Bury St Edmunds, and decided to revert to Bury Town, which has remained to this day. The club played in various local leagues until 1935 when it became a founder member of the Eastern Counties League. The club spent a total of 22 consecutive seasons in the Eastern Counties League, finishing as runners up in 1937-38. The Blues claimed the ECL title in the 1963-64 season as part of an historic treble, as they also captured the ECL Knockout Cup and the Suffolk Premier Cup. This success saw the club move to the Metropolitan League and club finished 4th in their first season and also

THE OPPOSITION

retained the Suffolk Premier Cup.

Season 1965-66 was another successful season and another treble haul of trophies as the club stormed to the Metropolitan League title, won the Metropolitan League Cup and the Suffolk Premier Cup again. In 1968, the Blues reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup and win the league again for a second time. The clubs success resulted them taking the bold step to join the Southern Football League for the 1971-72 season. The club struggled to adapt to their new surroundings and after five seasons, decided to take the decision to re-join the Eastern Counties League, a decision that proved unpopular with supporters. On Wednesday 28th April 1976, Bury Town played their final match at the historic Kings Road ground when West Ham United were the visitors. Bury Town moved into their current Ram Meadow ground in 1978 and collected the Suffolk Premier Cup as a reward. The 1987-88 season saw ambition retuned to the club and Bury were promoted to the Southern League, leaving their ECL rivals Braintree Town and Sudbury Town behind. After a few seasons of promising results and large home crowds, the Blues failed to reach the Premier Division, the closest they came was finishing 4th in 1988-89. Years of overspending on players and ground improvements finally caught up and the club drifted into decline as the crowds drifted away. On the 4th May 1996, the Blues were relegated at Redditch United from the Midland Division of the Southern League, back to the Eastern Counties League.

The club spent another 10 years in the ECL, and despite some early seasons of struggles, success coincided with the appointment of former Colchester United captain Richard Wilkins to the manager’s seat. Crowds rose back up and after two consecutive runners up spots in the Premier Division of the ECL, the club were promoted to the Isthmian League for the first time in their history. The stay lasted two seasons and after adjusting to a higher level in 2006-07 with a 17th place finish, the following season saw the Blues finish in 7th position. The FA re-organisation in 2008 saw Bury moved into the Southern League for a third spell of membership However in 2009-10, Bury Town clinched the Southern League Midland Division Championship on the final day of the season with a 3-0 home victory over Marlow in front of 1,550 supporters. The Blues piped Hitchin Town to the title, scoring 115 goals during the campaign and collecting 102 points to gain promotion. Another move across the pyramid saw the Blues re-join the Ryman League for the 2010-11 season, entering the Premier Division. A great season saw Bury finish third, but go out of the play off’s to Lowestoft Town. 2011-12 saw the club lift the Ryman League Cup with a victory over East Thurrock United and again finished in the play off places, but lost out to AFC Hornchurch in the Semi Final. Last season saw our spell in the Premier Division come to an end after 5 years with relegation to Division One North. Our first season back in Division One North ended in a 13th place finish.

I thought the lads played fantastically on Monday night against Folkestone Invicta in the FA Youth Cup. We’ve only had between ten and thirteen players being able to attend due to holidays in recent weeks. I cannot give Gary (Ryan) enough praise for the standard of players who he’s been able to bring into the Academy in recent weeks. Now it’s down to us to get the lads together as a team. And to that end I’m so pleased with the performance they put on – when you consider that we haven’t been able to play any pre-season friendlies. To give a well-established side like Folkestone the fright we did, really does give us the basis to build on in the coming months in the league which starts for us next Wednesday.

You’ll find a report on our FA Youth Cup tie elsewhere in today’s programme, but the game on Monday was a real eye opener for some of the players – some of them hadn’t played school football before let alone representative football – and the Folkestone side I believe included one player who’s on a contract at their club as well as others who have been in and around their first team squad. I’m delighted with the way they performed; I’m delighted with the way that we played and in defeat may come a victory, as its opened a few people’s eyes to see just how tough the National Youth Alliance League will be – it’s an under-19s league and so should be even faster than what we saw on Monday night. I’m very proud of them, and they’ve given us a lot of things to look forward to over the coming months Cheers. Ian Docker Academy Manager

THE DAY THAT SHOOK THE WORLD

THE DAY THAT

SHOOK THE WORLD

To mark the 15th anniversary tomorrow (Sunday), MIKE GREEN remembers the day that shook the World, and left an indelible mark on us all… On September 11th 2001, the worst terrorist attack in history shook the World when two passenger aeroplanes were hijacked and crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, killing nearly 3,000 people and injuring thousands more. 2001 was just like any other – England had a new coach Sven Goran Eriksen was appointed; Man United won the Premier League for the third years in a row and their seventh title in nine years and signed Ruud Van Nilstelrooy from PSV; and Tony Blair won a second term as Prime Minister. And then at the end of September, the Ryder Cup was due to be played at the Belfry near Sutton Coalfield and courtesy of being lucky in the draw, along with two friends, we’d been able to purchase three “season tickets” for the whole thing!

20

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

To set my scene for you – I worked at the time for a major Canadian Bank in the City of London and at weekend’s reported on football matches for BBC Radio Kent. Occasionally this meant going to games in midweek, and this particular Tuesday (September 11th) was one of those days as I’d been asked to go to cover the Conference game between Woking and Margate at the Surrey club’s Kingfield stadium. Anyway, it was a normal Tuesday – got up; went to the station; walked to work with that distant look in your eye of someone who’s got a week off in a fortnight’s time – arrive at the office and get on with thing – as I said another “normal” day… Until that is we got to around lunchtime – and then the whole world changed forever! Now you have to remember that in 2001 very few news outlets had live

on-line streaming and even fewer companies allowed you to actually log-into them. Working for a Bank in the City of London in those days meant that you used to get the news feeds straight away and I’ll never forget someone coming round just around 2:00pm hearing someone saying that there had been a plane crash in New York City. Obviously that news raised a few eyebrows but as people were able to log into websites – CNN got a lot of hits in our office that afternoon – the pictures of the first plane crashing into the first tower were shown, and there was an audible gasp around probably not only our office but the whole City! Events were cancelled throughout the afternoon because of the “increased threats” and there was an announcement made that the trains

THE DAY THAT SHOOK THE WORLD

were running but there heightened security. There was a surreal atmosphere on the way to Waterloo where I was catching a train down to Woking, and at the station there was an air of apprehension around the place. When I got to Kingfield, I was told that we’d be doing the “usual” reports but it wasn’t a sports show as the station was taking a live national feed and it was then I was told that one of the Margate players – Canadian Ross Smith – had a relative (it was his brother I think) who was actually working for a Company in the World Trade Center. And you can guess what the station asked of me? Interview poor Ross after the game about his brother! To be fair, Ross was fantastic – both on and off the pitch. Margate struggled that night and his boss at the time, Chris Kinnear, praised young Ross for his performance and I’ll never forget that look on his face as he came to talk to me after the game. It wasn’t exactly “dead man walking” but he had a very worried look on

his face as he still hadn’t been able to contact the relative – it was one of the most difficult interviews that I’ve ever done or would ever want to do. His face was full of anxiety – a man with the troubles of the world on his shoulders – and his usual smiling persona was nowhere to be seen. After talking with him for a couple of minutes before we started the interview, he had me on the verge of tears – partly through worry and the pain of not knowing, and partly through anger that “people” were capable of doing what the hijackers had done in the name of what? Religion? The whole atmosphere of the night will live with me forever – I think that it was the first time (and thankfully the last) that I’ve ever been at a football ground watching a game in front of me that I really couldn’t focus on. There was a dread throughout the night that something else would happen – you dreaded someone next to you saying something in case events did take another turn.

from that night, and if this sound harsh or callous given those horrific events on the other side of the Atlantic that changed everyone’s life for ever, I assure you that it doesn’t mean to – young Ross’ performance that night illustrated that football can really be an “out” to even the worse situations as for two hours he was able to focus on something other than possibly the most frightening few hours anyone could ever imagine on one of the most horrific days in history. POST SCRIPT – I’m delighted to say that I got a phone call from Ross the following day saying that everything was fine and his brother, and the difference in his voice was remarkable. I’m glad to say that Ross and I remain friends to this day – he’s now back in Canada and has been involved with the MLS team – the Portland Timbers – but that night forged a friendship that even though it’s now long distance and sporadic at best will always be there… And my trip to the Ryder Cup? That was postponed until the following year because of security issues – but my goodness it was worth the wait!

But one other thing will live with me

MAN OF THE MATCH

MAN OF THE

MATCH AWARD

We’re delighted that Erica Cooper and her daughter Charlotte are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award again this season. Throughout the 2016/17 season, Thamesmead Town will once again be presenting the Mead Man of the Match award after each home game. Again, we are indebted to Erica Cooper and her daughter, Charlotte, for donating the prize to the club. This year, the awarding of the prize will take place on the pitch as the Mead leave the field. So hang around for a few minutes at the end of the game to see who is the recipient of the Cooper Man of the Match award.

ENGLAND 50

THE MAN THEY CALLED “THE BLACK PANTHER”...

In the latest part of our series celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1966 England World Cup win, after focusing on the North Korean Army Sergeant who beat the Italians last time, today MIKE GREEN turns the spot light on the man they called “the Black Panther”, “the Black Pearl”, or simply “O Rei” – the King…

players of all time, he scored a truly incredible seven hundred and thirty three goal in “only” seven hundred and forty five professional matches – a mind blowing average of one goal every ninety one and a half minutes that the great man played!

Born in Mozambique in 1942 when it was still a Portuguese colony, Eusebio da Silva Ferreira was capped sixty four times for Portugal, scoring fortyone goals.

Famed for his blistering acceleration and dazzling dribbling skills, Eusebio was named European Footballer of the Year in 1965. He won the European Cup with Benfica in 1962 and was in the side that lost to Sir Bobby Charlton’s Manchester United in the 1968 Wembley final.

The Benfica striker’s nine goals at the 1966 Finals included four against North Korea in the last eight, won him the prestigious “Golden Boot” crown. Widely considered one of the best

Eusebio enjoyed ten league championship victories and five Portuguese cup triumphs in his fifteen years at the club and was Portugal’s top league scorer seven times.

24

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

Eusebio’s goals in the 1966 World Cup helped his country to third place, after they were beaten by eventual winners England in the semi-finals. The Portuguese won all their three group games which included a highly controversial game against the Champions from 1962 as the Brazilians – Pele and all – were battered in their physical group game at Goodison Park. What followed was arguably the game of the tournament as Eusebio then starred in a dramatic 5-3 win over North Korea in the quarter-finals – the story of which we highlighted in our last trip down memory lane when it was the Koreans who came under the spotlight – Eusebio scoring four time to inspire the Portuguese recover

ENGLAND 50

from being three behind after just half an hour. Portugal then headed South for the London Semi-Final only to be beaten by two Sir Bobby Charlton goals in the last four. Eusebio’s ninth goal of the competition in the end wasn’t enough, and like some of his team mates, he was pictured in tears as he left the Wembley pitch at the end of the game. But “The Black Pearl” had captured the hearts of the British public and after winning the 1966 “Overseas Sports Personality of the Year” award at the end of the year, his figure was soon added to Madame Tussauds’ waxwork collection. Sadly his next visit to Wembley for the 1968 European Cup Final also ended in defeat as again Sir Bobby was the inspiration as United ran out 4-1

winners to seal the trophy for Sir Matt Busby – ten years after the Munich Air Crash.

After his playing career ended, he was an ambassador for Benfica and Portuguese football.

Not put off Eusebio continued to play at the highest level until 1974, but knee problems had already begun to slow him down. Sadly, 1966 proved to be the last time that the football world would see “The Black Pearl” play at the highest level internationally as Portugal failed to qualify for the 1970 Mexico World Cup – indeed the Portuguese wouldn’t be seen again at a major competition (World Cup or European Championships) until the 1984 Euro’s in France when they were only beaten by a Michel Platini inspired hosts.

He passed away in 2014 after had being admitted to hospital several times over the previous year for the treatment of heart and respiratory problems. The top two current “names” in Portuguese football were among those to pay tribute. “Always eternal, Eusebio, rest in peace,” Ronaldo (the current national Captain) tweeted alongside a picture of both men together.

In 1975, Eusebio moved to the North American Soccer League and then returned to Portugal in 1976-77 to play for SC Beira Mar, before further spells in the USA and Mexico.

From an African colony to international stardom and almost saint-hood in his adopted country – what a truly remarkable journey! But then next time, we focus on the North East brothers who went from miners sons to the heights of national heroes and World Cup winners that sunny July afternoon!

Meanwhile the “Special One” called him one of his country’s “great figures”. Jose Mourinho was quoted on Portuguese broadcaster RTP as saying: “I think he is immortal. We all know what he meant for football and especially for Portuguese football. He was not only a great inspiration but also an important figure in upholding the values, principles and feelings of football, even after finishing his career.”
