THE CHAIRMAN <

PAUL BOWDEN-BROWN THE CHAIRMAN

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Billericay Town FC to Princes Park on this Sunday afternoon being played at our new home for the next five years. And after an enjoyable game have a safe journey home! Today we are playing Billericay Town in the second qualifying round of the FA Cup. Now a lot has been reported within the media and non-league football about what Glenn Tamplin has achieved since he took over Billericay last year. I have an opinion and, as you know, I do not hide my feelings! I personally feel that non-league football needs people like Glenn to be involved, of course, there is going to be jealousy from a few all since Glen can assemble a squad as he has and can pay the money he does. But surely this can only be good for non-league football, a game we all love. Because of his achievements the game will get that well-needed exposure – something that in my opinion is missing within the game at this time. It should also be remembered by his critics that Glenn has worked hard during his life and finds himself in the position of being able to use finances he has earnt – these are personal finances he is using to ensure that Billericay supporters have a ground that all can be proud

PAGE 04

of, together with the ability to put together a squad to ensure the clubs travels up the non-league structure. It reminds me of the time in 1992 when I took over the remnants of the old Football League club Maidstone United after it had been thrown out of League Football with a massive debt that I cleared. It was a club left with no senior status – all I had to work with was the under-18s; the only ground I had was a training ground that was being leased from the Mormon church! It took me 18 years of hard personal effort, my own finances (well over a million which was a lot in those days) supporting various squads managed by a number of great managers. Well over one million pounds, even in those days it was said I was making it unfair to other teams as I was able to bring older pros of the game to the club due to paying good wages to both the players and the managers.

THAMESMEAD TOWN V BILLERICAY TOWN

In those days it was seen as madness on my behalf, but I had a vision of what I wanted to achieve to ensure that the club once again rose from the ashes to find success something the supporters of MUFC deserved after all of the previous bad management, and when I left in 2010 some 18 years later due to ill health, the team were playing in the same league as Billericay are now, and with a piece of land purchased for a new stadium on the outskirts of Maidstone, which has now been turned into a thriving stadium for the supporters of MUFC by the new directors of the club – so that was my legacy. That is why I support wholly what Glenn is achieving at Billericay as I have said it before is only pure jealousy by a few. The records show whenever a person’s attempts and achieves his visions usually by using their own hard earnt monies you will always have a few critics that will have their say. But all I see is by Glenn’s approach of dragging the club into the 21st Century whilst also totally

> THE CHAIRMAN

revamping the ground, the playing staff there is positivity around the club, remember words are cheap therefore his actions have put his club back on the map.

Yes, we may have a five-year ground share agreement with a security of tenure with our colleagues Dartford FC, but that is financially guaranteed by myself.

I understand from others that he has totally professionalised the operations of the club by some shrewd appointments on and off the field that has resulted in fantastic facilities for all.

I have recently been asked why do you financially support a Football club that has no real support, or sponsors?

Surely when a person spends his own hard earnt money providing leisure and enjoyment for many on a matchday, his actions should be praised and not mocked as he has been in the past. I personally believe that Glenn’s actions and personal forethought has put the town of Billericay back on the map – his actions have increased the crowds on matchdays, and by reading the media reports has galvanised the community. So Glenn, my personal view – well done! We need more people like you in non-league football. In the past within the South East we have had a number of wealthy individuals take over a number of football clubs. But unlike yourself, they have not treated it as a business, but a toy for their own egos! So, I wish you and your supporters everything you wish for – you have certainly laid a foundation for what you want to achieve for your supporters and the local community, and hopefully I will get the opportunity to visit your ground this season to see for myself. Well now we can talk about Thamesmead Town Football Club – a club without a home.

You left a purpose-made stadium in Thamesmead due to the high costs being charged for the usage of the facilities – so why come to Dartford? What has changed? Surely you are just pouring your personal money into a hole with no sight of it changing. I reply firstly the Club does have a small contingent of support and they deserve to have their Football Club. I accept they only number around 30, but since moving to Dartford our paying gates have increased by a 125% - not great but quite a few of Dartford Supporters that are unable to join their own team on away matches have taken advantage of our concession price of £5 per game and over 65 £2.50 in return for a Mead Card. There were two reasons for the move away from Thamesmead – the main being cost but the other it was fully proven that supporting a Football Club in Thamesmead was not a priority for the community even though the Club worked in local schools and the outside community all free of charge. The predicament came when Keith, my fellow director and first-team manager and the person that asked me to join the club in September 2012 as finance director, resigned in January 2015 leaving me holding

the baby as they say, especially as my timetable was that in March of that year I was leaving, as I felt I had done all I could on my own. So, things change the club was dying on its feet, but it had a great football management team, a good squad and I felt I would try and save the club, move it to a proper Football Stadium – a must for my first-team manager – and more importantly, I would continue to sponsor the club but look for likeminded people to join me. I have no ego all; I want is for someone or a group to join me running the club with the longterm view of me handing over all my shares free of charge to a person or persons who feel they can give this club its full support. I am now 70 not in good health, and to be honest, unlike a younger person when I started the journey with MUFC, I do not have the energy that I feel this club deserves. So, if there is anyone out there reading these words and feel you could give your time and some finance to take over the reins of this club, you know where I am. But until then, I will try and ensure the club survives, Tommy and his squad deserves it as they have fully supported me throughout the time we have been together. So, let’s all get behind Tommy and the boys for one of the best games we will have at Princes Park this season, and whatever the score lets ensure it is played in the spirit of the game Enjoy the game. THE MANAGER <

TOMMY WARRILOW THE manager

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to another Sunday at Princes as this afternoon we welcome Billericay Town for another FA Cup tie. I’d like to start by thanking everyone there for making me feel so welcome when I went to their league game with Leatherhead last Saturday. It was great to see and experience the facilities that they now have at New Lodge – the welcome was second to none and thank you for that! That brings us to today’s game which has brought a smile to everyone’s faces since the draw was made and that is a credit to what Glenn and the others have done at Billericay. I don’t honestly understand all the negativity that has surrounded it – it can only be good and positive for football especially at this level – and if we can find someone like Glenn to come out of this game and help our football club out, I’m sure no-one associated with Thamesmead PAGE 06

Town will complain. It does change a club around and raises the profile of the team and that is something, as well as a result obviously, that we would love to get out of today – someone to help with some sponsorship and advertising and give the chairman some much needed help off the pitch which is key to our growth on it! We weren’t at our best last weekend against Sittingbourne to be honest, but we didn’t get beaten. We’ve had eight games (with respect to the Kent Cup) and lost just one of them – at VCD and even then, we started well only to shoot ourselves in the foot but we’ve addressed that and know why we lost the game. But today we know we’ll have our work cut out for us, but it

THAMESMEAD TOWN V BILLERICAY TOWN

is eleven against eleven and as a player I was always told and taught that the opposition are just human beings and if we can get amongst them and give a good account of ourselves and take our chances who knows what might happen! If Billericay score a goal today, we must make sure they’ve earned it, but they are a very good team with strength in depth and it’ll be a good game for the supporter. We’ve got a busy week ahead of us with league games and in the last week I’ve seen three of our next four opponents – on Tuesday, I was at Ashford to see them play Ramsgate and yesterday I saw Greenwich play Molesey – it will ensure that we’ve done all we can in preparing to play sides before the end of the month. It’s important for us to stay in

> THE MANAGER

and around the pack as after all we’re only five games in thus far and with two wins you could easily go from bottom to top. We’ve started well – it would be nice to be higher – but we’re in the pack and I’m confident that if we can stay injury and suspension free we’re only going to get stronger and in our league, I believe that I’ve got a set of players here who are good enough to make a fist of it and believe me when I say that I’m putting that pressure on them! The next few weeks will be a good test for us as we’ve only got a small squad; there’s no reserve side and whilst we’ve got the academy, this

is effectively the club starting afresh and we need to get some help off the pitch to grow on it. We need to get a reserve side; we need to get a youth section; we need all that help but at the moment we just have the first team. The chairman takes a lot of stick from people, but ever since I’ve been at the football club he’s been bang on with everything that he’s said – he’s backed whatever he’s said and at the moment he is the man funding the club and he does need other people to help with Billericay being the prime example.

Glenn and good luck to him and Billericay Town Football Club – we’d love a Glenn Tampling to come in and pitch in with the chairman to help him out. Every game we play is for our chairman and the most important thing is to get out of Bostik South, but today is about the boys giving their all on the pitch and hopefully getting a big gate and increasing the profile of it off the pitch. Enjoy the afternoon and see you in the bar later. Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

LEON SMITH THE CAPTAIN

Hello everyone and welcome to Princes Park, where we take on Billericay Town in the FA Cup What a great day today promises to be for the club! It really is a massive game for us all to play in and the place had been buzzing all week – in fact ever since the draw was made – the Gaffer’s even been on TV I understand, too! But we all know what a tough afternoon we’re in for today, but it’s always an honour to play in the FA Cup and today will be no different. We come into the game after a draw last Sunday. A hard-fought first half saw us go in at 1-1 with a stunning goal from Ellis and after a great save from Lewis a penalty that was and then wasn’t! We started really well in the second half and scored early on when Kinchy prodded home.

Laurent then had to come on for Ellis who got battered and made an immediate effect down the left. I thought that once again Tom had another great game in the middle, and Lewis pulled off a couple of terrific saves. Late on Kinchy got a second yellow and we nearly held on with the ten men, but Sittingbourne levelled late on, and even then, we had to pull out all of the stops. All in all, it was a good point and performance to take into our big game today. Enjoy the game and don’t forget we’re back here next Saturday for another derby – this time with Ramsgate. Thanks for your support as always - you really do make a difference! Leon Smith First-Team Captain

IAN DOCKER

THE Academy Hello, and here’s hoping for a successful season for Tom and the lads in our first year at Princes Park. Good luck to Tom and the lads today.

with a trip to play Fulham Sedgehill.

Last Tuesday, our academy lads played against Margate in the FA Youth Cup and went down 3-0 to a very well-organised home side.

We had been due to host the game but Fulham requested the switch and we were only too happy to oblige. On a wet and windy day, our lads went 1-0 up in the first twenty minutes through good build up play and Dante McIntosh finished the move with a cool slot into the bottom corner.

On the whole manager Steve and I were very pleased with our lads display especially as we’ve had lads away on holiday. All in all, the lads did a fantastic job and we were very proud of them on the night. Special mention must go to our goalkeeper Wonu Rilwan for his performance on the night. He made some outstanding saves and kept the score respectable. I was personally pleased as he has been working so hard in training and deserved all the plaudits he received. This week we began our league campaign in the Under 19 National League Youth Alliance

regained their composure and continued to dominate the match.

The lads pressed Fulham from the off and midfielders Myron Dixon, Dante and Artan Fanaj forced them into giving the ball away. Ade Adeniran hustled and bustled Fulham’s two centre backs and showed good speed when taking on the two six-foot defenders. A lapse in defence let the home side equalize and for twenty minutes our lads head dropped. Our physio for the day was our course tutor Linda King and after a few shouts and arm waving from her, our lads

Sadly, a second sloppy mistake in the back line allowed Fulham to go in front and even though our lads battled away we were unable to get the equaliser, even after Dante hit the post, Myron let two opportunities go by and Rueben Mensah chose to go it alone instead of passing to Ade Adeniran. So, a 2-1 defeat for our first league game but overall, I was very pleased with our lads and Owen Shirley, Jake McMillan and sub Zacharia Coulibaly from Gary’s Academy. Next up is a trip to Dulwich Hamlet next Wednesday. Exciting times ahead, Yours in sport Ian Docker Academy Manager

CLUB HISTORY

thamesmead town Thamesmead F.C. was formed in 1969 as a community team for local youngsters. The club merged with Southlake FC in 1973, and by 1979 were fielding a Saturday team, playing on local park pitches. In 1980 the club entered the London Spartan League at the Intermediate Division Three level and dominated the divisions in the early 80s, but were couldn’t gain promotion to the Senior Division until they gained senior status. In 1985, the club changed its name to Thamesmead Town FC, and later that year they relocated to Bayliss Avenue, before finally gaining senior status during the summer of 1987 and were accepted into the London Spartan League Premier Division. The club moved to the Kent League in June 1990, where they remained until 2008, generally finishing amongst the top half dozen in the table. In 2002–03, the club missed the runner-up spot on goal difference, despite bizarrely having more points than Cray Wanderers, who won the League! In 2007–08, Thamesmead Town were champions of the Kent League,

would be competing in the South Division.

The title ensured promotion to the Isthmian League, where they were elected to play in Division One North in 2008–09, before in 2012-13, the Mead finished 3rd in this division and beat Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final to gain promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time in their history.

In August 2017, the club enjoyed a record 8-0 win in the FA Cup (away to East Preston) which was not only the Clubs biggest ever win in the competition but was also the first time, we have won a competitive game by eight clear goals!

The club’s stay in the Premier Division lasted just one season, and the club endured two turbulent seasons before Tommy Warrilow was appointed manager in the summer of 2016. Pre-season began with a completely new-look squad yet it proved to be a historic season in the FA Cup, when the club were the first to play a tie in the Channel Islands before reaching the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in the club’s history. In March 2017, the club announced that they would be moving to play their home games at Princes Park Stadium, the home of neighbours Dartford FC, and in the close season, the newly named BOSTIK League confirmed that for the first time, the Mead

Sunday 10th September Princes Park Attendance: 134 Bostik League South

2 SITTINGBOURNE Dawodu (16), Smith (89)

The Mead’s first Sunday game at Princes Park proved to be a derby thriller with Sittingbourne that ebbed and flowed in both sides favour only to dramatically end in an hugely entertaining 2-2 draw. The Mead went behind on 15 minutes thanks to Dawodu’s acrobatics and for a while it looked as though the visitors were going to be a tough nut to crack. It looked as though it would take a moment of brilliance for the home side to get level and that’s exactly what happened on the stroke of half time when Ellis Green picked up a half cleared corner and drove home into the top corner from the edge of the box. After Ellis’s curling free kick smacked against the keeper’s left post could have put the Mead in front just after half time, before just past the hour though the home side did take the lead as Richard Avery nodded down a corner from Scott Kinch to sweep home. Kinchy though sadly was to go from hero to villain as he received his second yellow card and meant that the Mead had to play the final seven minutes with just ten men, and Sittingbourne duly cashed in as substitute Smith scored gloriously curled home a last minute equaliser. Early on it was Sittingbourne who had the better chances with

Rowland being denied just before Dawodu’s overhead kick from a corner crept in the near post. Shortly afterwards, Mead keeper Lewis Carey breathed a sigh of relief as a shot ricocheted over his head and dropped agonisingly just over the cross bar. Lewis then pulled off a stunning save to deny a swift visitors attack as Phillip drilled in a low drive which was magnificently dealt with. Finally the home side got into their stride and Paul Vines was unlucky with a header from Bode Anidugbe’s cross before Ellis brilliantly drove the Mead level. Indeed had referee Cruise not over turned his own decision of a penalty after Hawkes had brought down Harvey Brand who had raced through. The official initially pointed to the spot only to change his decision after consulting with one of his assistants.

The second half began with Ellis’ free kick cannoning off of the post Kinchy poked home Avo’s knock down from Ellis’ corner. The home side then had a good spell but credit the opposition for not buckling and Lewis pulled off another great save to deny Elliot’s shot. Then came Kinchy’s red card and the impetus was with the visitors and in the final minute they got their goal as Smith curled home gloriously from the left edge of the box. Incredibly, Smith was only a coat of paint away to giving Sittingbourne a stoppage time lead as his curling shot from the right before incredibly Harvey almost won the game at the other end as he was denied by a brilliant brave Hawkes block. Honours even then and a terrific advert for BOSTIK South football... by Mike Green

But perhaps more damning is the fact they have found the net on 21 occasions during that time - six more than their nearest rival. A midweek game at home to Brightlingsea Regent showed their squad depth,

BILLERICAY TOWN

Recent CLUB HISTORY Billericay Town Football Club was formed in 1880 making it the 11th oldest club in Essex. It moved into the Romford & District League in 1890 competing in this league until 1914. After the 1st World War, BTFC entered the Mid-Essex League where they remained until 1947. Between 1947 and 1966 they played in the Southern Essex Combination. In 1966 they became founder-members of the Essex Olympian League. Five years later, in 1971, Billericay Town Football Club became foundermembers of the Essex Senior League and the clubs six-year stay in that competition saw them win the Championship three times and be Runners-Up twice. Whilst members of the Essex Senior League, the club won the FA Vase in 1976 beating Stamford 1-0 after extra-time at Wembley Stadium. The following season, 1976/1977, the club again reached the FA Vase Final. After a 1-1 draw at Wembley, the replay was played at Nottingham Forest F.C. Billericay Town emerged victorious with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield, reputedly the oldest club in the world. Progressing to the Athenian League in 1977, Billericay won the Championship and the League Cup in their first season. They became Champions again in 1978/1979 and were elected into the Isthmian League. Billericay Town became the first club to win the F.A Vase for a third time in 1979 when they defeated Almondsbury Greenway 4-1. The Club then competed in the F.A Trophy until 1989/1990 when the F.A Vase was again entered and the Quarter-Final was reached, losing 0-1 to the eventual Finalists, Bridlington. After their success in the Athenian League, Billericay’s league successes continued in the Isthmian League when in their first season they won

the Division 2 title with a winning margin of 17 points, scoring 100 goals in their 36 league matches. The following season, in Division 1, they finished as runners-up to Bishops Stortford - the first time in the history of the Isthmian League that a club had won promotion in two successive seasons on entry into the League. Billericay then had five seasons in the Premier Division before being relegated in 1986. They then spent two years in Division One before again being relegated - this time into Division Two North. Following re-organisation of the League, Billericay finished in third place in the newly formed Division Two and so gained promotion to Division One. That season, 1991/1992, they finished the season with an unbeaten run of 15 games, including winning the Essex Thames-Side Trophy. Full Membership of the Football Association was achieved in 1993, twelve years after obtaining Associate Membership in 1981. Promotion back to the Premier Division was obtained in 1998. The club finished runner-up in 2004.2005 before losing in the playoffs, they again reached the play-offs in 2006/2007. In what probably ranks as the most remembered game in recent years, Billericay beat local rivals Chelmsford in the semi-finals on penalties in front of a crowd of over 2,000. The final however ended with a less successful penalty shoot-out and defeat to Bromley. In November 2007, the club staged its biggest ever competitive game at New Lodge – reaching the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the third time, Billericay finally drew league opposition for the first time in the form of Swansea City. The Blues took a first half lead before going down to two late goals.

The 2010/11 season saw much local success. The first team lifted the Essex Senior Cup for the first time in 35 years and the club were in fact triple County winners as the youth development programme was rewarded with the Under 18 and Under 16 sides also winning their respective County Cup competitions. This success was built on in 2011/12 as the club finally secured promotion to the Blue Square Bet South as Ryman League Champions. However, it proved to be a one season stay, despite a good start, the second half of the season was blighted by poor weather and despite hanging on until the penultimate game, a return to the Ryman league beckoned. Subsequent seasons have seen the club steadily rebuild itself. A midtable finish in 2013/14 was followed in 2014/15 by a respectable 8th place finish in the league. And appearances in the final of the Essex Senior Cup and the semi-final of the League Cup. The 2015/16 campaign saw the club enter April in the play-off places, eventually finishing 9th. After a steady start to the 2016/17 season, early December saw significant changes with the club being taken over by a new owner (Glenn Tamplin) and a number of new recruits to the playing staff, most noticeably, Paul Konchesky and Jamie O’Hara. The season ended with the Town finishing in 8th position and wining the Ryman League cup with an astonishing 8-2 victory in the final. During the 2017 close season the New Lodge complex has undergone a major upgrade being re-branded the “AGP Arena” and now has one of the best Stadiums in non-league football, our last pre-season friendly against a West Ham United X1 attracted a record 4,582 crowd.

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

TOM O’CONNOR He’s the Mead midfielder who joined the club from Bromley and played a big part in the club’s best ever run in the FA Cup last season. Today he’s looking to help the Mead create history again – Greenie’s been talking to Tom O’Connor

PAGE 26

THAMESMEAD TOWN V BILLERICAY TOWN

> PLAYER INTERVIEW

Tom joined the club shortly after we became the first team to play a cup tie in the Channel Islands and the first goal that day scored by Paul Vines was seen by hundreds of thousands on YouTube – and the Mead’s new midfielder was one of them. “I remember seeing the goal on twitter as I was not at Thamesmead at the time,” Tom remembered. “I joined the club a week later. However, what an assist by Kinchy, he knew what he was doing he has that in his locker. Some people may describe the goal as a freak but it shows that anything can happen in football.” “We had a great run before losing at Merstham in the Third Qualifying Round especially as they went all the way to the First Round and were on live TV. It was very disappointing as we did not show up on the day, maybe if we had put in a performance we were capable of then who knows what could have happened!” Tom made the move from Bromley and we wondered what was the thinking behind?: “One of the boys at Bromley played under the gaffer,” Tom said, “and told me a lot about him and when he introduced me to him, I knew it would be right for me. “I also knew some of the boys which helped me settle in quickly. Last season was very

frustrating as we played very well in a lot of games, but dropped many points even when we should not have. “On a personal note, I was hit with a number of injuries which kept me out for quite a period of time which was very frustrating!” “This season, everyone is buzzing after the move to Princes; the facilities are very nice and there is a different atmosphere in the changing room this season. Who knows if the new ground is helping, we have signed good players who bring something different to the team.” No matter where he plays, Tom’s biggest fans are his Mum and Dad who are at every game. “They have always supported me and I can’t thank them enough for what they have done for me. They pick me up when I am feeling down but they also bring me back

down to earth!” “That said, they are by far my biggest critics, no matter how well I may have played my Dad will find something I needed to do better, sometimes I don’t like it, but I appreciate it as they both want the best for me.” Finally, our “Five First’s” as we ask everyone the same five questions… First football kit bought (either for you or by you)? An Arsenal kit. First album/CD owned? I think it’s a Now that’s... CD. First football match attended? Charlton. First car owned? Ford Fiesta. First foreign holiday? Disneyland Paris.

CRAIG’S CORNER <

CRAIG GIBSON THE coach

Welcome to Princes Park our new home - Jamie and Greenie have finally let me write some words for the programme, so here goes! Well here we are, welcome to what should be a very Interesting FA Cup tie in the second qualifying round versus Billericay Town. I was away for Phoenix game and followed the score on Twitter and was delighted when we were 4-1 to the good, I have to say I was “twitching” on “twitter” for the last fifteen minutes, but was delighted we managed to see the game out 4-3 and progress to the next round.

PAGE 28

Max performed well in goal again so that was pleasing and nice to see both Glovesy & Flacky on the scoresheet. Last Sunday saw us draw against a hard working & unbeaten Sittingbourne. A 2-2 draw on the day was probably a fair result overall, however it felt like a defeat in the dressing room having conceded late.

THAMESMEAD TOWN V BILLERICAY TOWN

It is great feeling to score late to win or draw a game and gives everybody a real “buzz”, but the flip side is when it goes against you it is a horrible feeling. The positive to take from this is that when the players have that down feeling they normally can channel their feelings to bounce back straight away determined not to let it happen again. And so to today – I have not been to their ground at New Lodge for quite a while &

whilst it was a nice ground, I understand the changes made in the summer have been nothing short of spectacular.

> CRAIG’S CORNER

They have worked extremely hard off the pitch to create something for the longer term future of the football club AND the wider local community. There has been a lot of negative thoughts aired from various sources, why? The owners can spend their money how they see fit – of course they’re looking to push the playing side forward and quickly – wouldn’t you? But at the same time, they are also doing an awful lot of good things off the field. Overall, I agree with the Gaffer and do think the publicity created for our level of the game is great; creating Interest that otherwise would not have been there. So good luck to you Billericay - BUT NOT TODAY! Our lads will have to show the determination, work rate & skill to upset the Billericay boys & turf them out of the FA Cup, it will need a great effort from all of us at the “MEAD”, but it can be done – after all it is the greatest cup competition in the world! Enjoy the game and if it is the first time you’ve seen us please come again in the coming months as we look to keep ourselves near the top of the league ready to challenge at the end of the season.
