MANAGER’S COLUMN

STEVE

HOUSHAM

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Chester FC to our home this Tuesday evening, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Chester. Our last home game saw us come up against a side who are also down at the wrong end of the table and unfortunately, on the day, we didn’t turn up and the performance was not like us.

sometimes as a part-time team to work on changes and game plans for games, but credit to my players because if we do change things there are quick to switch on and deliver.

All I can do is say sorry to, you the fans, for our last home performance. You must hear reports how well we worked away from home and then we don’t do it at home for you guys we will

We know it’s a tough league, but in every game we must give effort and desire and overall it was a bad day in terms of that. Now we have two home games on the spin and hopefully get a better performance and get back to making our home a difficult place and pick up some crucial points. Tonight we face Chester who as we all know from a few seasons ago and are now established National side, it’s going to another tough test , but as said before this is our home and we must perform to make sure they take nothing away from the Eon Visual Media Stadium. Tactics are always a factor in football and we get great reports on the opposition it’s difficult

Hopefully tonight we will see at least one new signing on board since are last home game. Me and Darryn said it might be time to bring in some fresh faces and we have been working hard to try and bring at least one if not two into the club.

keep on fighting and as a whole. We’ve got to keep spirits up and be proud! Keep believing! Steve Housham First-Team Manager NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

THE VISITORS...

CHESTER

North Ferriby United entertain Chester FC tonight at the Eon Visual Media Stadium in the Vanarama National League... Due to printer constraints, North Ferriby could be heading into this match on the back of three straight defeats and a fourth would do little for their confidence. Steve Housham knows his team need to address their run of form which has seen them taste victory just once in their last seven fixtures and thus slip into the relegation zone. Chester are tonight’s opponents at the Eon Visual Media Stadium and the Villagers must be at their best if they are to get the three 4

points on the back of a quick turnaround. That said, Ferriby will take solace from the fact the Blues have scored just four goals on their travels.

CLUB INFO

Nickname: The Blues Founded: 2010 Chairman: Simon Olorenshaw Manager: Jon McCarthy Ground: Deva Stadium Capacity 5,376

However, Chester have kept clean sheets in their last four outings, which highlights their defensive solidarity. Sitting in 15th-place, Chester have picked up 15 points from their opening 12 matches, but Jon McCarthy’s men are still searching for their first three points away from the Deva Stadium.

THE RISING STAR

LIAM ROBERTS TOM SHAW

ELLIOTT DURRELL

Tom was signed from Alfreton in the summer of 2015. He started his career at Nottingham Forest but then joined Rushden & Diamonds as a youth player. Tom made his Diamonds debut in their last ever Football League game, but went on to play over 50 games for them before subsequent moves to Mansfield, Tamworth, Kidderminster, Cambridge and then Alfreton.

An attacking midfield player Elliott joined the club in the summer after ending last season as Tamworth’s top scorer in National League North with 13 goals. A former AFC Telford player he came to prominence during several seasons with Hednesford Town when he scored 109 goals in 240 games. That form saw him move to Wrexham before heading to Tamworth in 2015.

Kane joined Chester from EvoStik Premier side Ilkeston Town in December 2014 having netted 12 goals for his former club during the first few months of the campaign. A player who can play wide or through the middle Kane made an impressive debut in the game at Barnet where he had a goal disallowed.

Jordan is a winger who started his career with Sheffield United where he made 2 appearances and also enjoyed loan spells with both Burton Albion and Torquay. Despite the offer of a new contract at Sheffield he opted to join Torquay on a more permanent basis in July 2013 and became a regular in their side before ending the 2014/15 campaign on loan at Grimsby.

21-year-old Liam joined Chester in the close season on an extended loan deal from Walsall. A product of Walsall’s youth academy, Liam was released by The Saddlers in May 2014 before being taken back on again just two months later. Will likely be the man between the sticks following the departure of Jon Worsnop.

CLUB HISTORY

CHESTER 2010 will undoubtedly go down in the record books as one of the most momentous years in the history of football in Chester for both the wrong and the right reasons, thankfully with the latter being the most significant. Senior football had been played in the City for 125 years, but the year had started with the former club failing to fulfil a fixture and ultimately being expelled from the Football Conference. The final nail in the coffin arrived in March with the company being wound up in the High Courts. Football in the City it seemed was dead, but several months earlier fans had been making preparations for such an eventuality, coming together under the banner of City Fans United and their efforts were rewarded when, on May 21st Chester Football Club was officially reborn. The local Council granted the lease of the former club’s ground, the Deva Stadium, to the new club and the management team of Neil Young and Gary Jones was appointed. Optimism among fans was growing daily boosted by the news that the club would be allocated a place at Step 4 of the National League System and would play their games in the Evo-Stik League 1 North. That proved to be just the beginning as a rollercoaster ride of a season saw an average crowd of 2382 experience a fantastic journey that was Evo-Stik Division One North. It

started with a draw at Warrington and ended with a defeat at Garforth as fans waited anxiously for the final score from Skelmersdale to be confirmed. Skem’s heroics were not to be enough and Chester FC were promoted courtesy of a couple of goals difference. Having given the fans near heart failure in that first season the management and players decided to make things a little easier second time around with not only another promotion but a title secured in front of a crowd of 5000 plus on Easter Monday with three games to spare! With 100 points gained 102 goals scored and only 29 conceded over another incredible season the journey continued. Despite starting 2012/13 as second favourites with the bookmakers many around the club thought that life in the Conference North would be a much tougher proposition, but again the management team and players worked wonders. Victory against Boston United on April 6th confirmed the club as Champions with four games still to play and with it the honour of being the first club in English football history to achieve three successive promotions. As with many journeys things don’t always go to plan and so it proved during that 2013/14 season when manager Neil Young parted company with the club soon after the start of the year. Not long afterwards Steve Burr was persuaded to take on the fight at Chester. That fight went all the

way to the closing minutes of the final game of the campaign when Salisbury levelled the game at Chester and then Hereford scored their winner just two minutes later to secure victory at Aldershot and with it preserved their Conference status on goal difference. With preparations having started for life in Conference North the side didn’t enjoy the best of starts but ended up with a 12th place finish which was in truth a very creditable effort all round. The 2015/16 campaign started optimistically with wins in the first two games and just one defeat in the first seven but from then on it proved to be a frustrating one. The highlights included a home win against local rivals Wrexham and a tremendous 8-2 home win against Aldershot in early March, a game that proved to be a turning point but for the wrong reasons. Far from kicking on from that win the team were left them with a relegation fight on their hands. Amidst real fears that the club could lose its National League status manager Steve Burr left and first team coach Jon McCarthy was placed in temporary charge. The appointments proved to be inspirational as the duo guided the team to three impressive victories from the final three games. Not surprisingly the new management team have been given their chance. The Challenge

AHEAD

Jack Walker takes a look at North Ferriby United’s start to life in the National League... After a rather torrid beginning to life in the unknown, North Ferriby Utd are slowly finding their feet in what is expected to be, a long slog of a Vanarama National League campaign. The Villagers began the season by picking up just one point from a possible seven, but bounced backto-back wins. A brilliant last-gasp triumph over Guiseley and a dogged display against Torquay, have given everyone around the club belief that The Villagers can compete at this level of the game. Many expect Ferriby to be heading straight back down to the National League North come the end of the season, but manager Steve Housham, who was only appointed in June, is determined to remain just one step from the English Football League. In an interview with the Hull Daily Mail, he stated, “It’s going to be a thankless task, but it’s one I’m looking forward to. We are the smallest club in this league with the smallest budget. I know the Ferriby people behind the scenes from my days at Brigg and they should be proud of what has been achieved.” The club have punched above their weight for the last four seasons, with promotion to the National League

12

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

North, winning the FA Trophy and securing a second promotion in three years with a 2-1 win over AFC Fylde in the Play-off final last term. But now it seems there is a real edge to this club and they are determined to not let all of last season’s achievements be flushed away. With new promising attacking prowess on show from summer signings Conner Robinson and Simon Russell along with the versatile Steve Brogan signing from Gainsborough, it is clear that Housham means business in the league and is adamant his side can compete in every area. There is however, still cause for concern as Ferriby have failed to register on the scoreboard in six of their last seven encounters, and have only scored in four. Goals may not be flowing at present, but the players cannot afford to let their heads drop. They need to keep battling, keep fighting, and keep grinding out results when they get their noses ahead. As we welcome Chester to the Eon Visual Stadium this evening, we host a side who have rather underperformed so far this campaign. Chester lie in mid-table and should really be challenging for the Play-offs

come May. The Blues’ main threats have emerged from midfield in the form of Tom Shaw and Elliot Durrell who both have three goals under their belts already. An aspect that Ferriby boss Steve Housham must surely have worked on in training this week is defending set pieces as the visitors are lethal from corners, with Durrell often whipping balls towards the penalty spot with real zip. If Housham and his players have done their homework and can nullify this threat, there is a real chance that Ferriby’s physical superiority can shine through and as proven on four occasions in Ferriby’s duels this season, it only takes one goal to take those vital three points. The one characteristic that Ferriby have always have is passion. And with local lads Rory Watson and Danny Emerton immersed heavily in everything positive on the pitch, one thing is certain. The lads will fight until the bitter end to stay in this division. The dedication shown by the players and staff at this swiftly developing club is second to none. The Villagers will not go down without a fight. By Jack Walker

That was sure to be a tough game as they sit third in the table and are on a good run of form. Any result from that game would have been a bonus. Looking back to our last home game against Southport, it was hard not to come away from the game feeling slightly deflated. Southport sat 4 points and 2 places below us at kick-off, but they managed to come away with a 1-0 win. Ferriby played well in the first-half and created chances, especially through Reece Thompson who looks like a good signing with his pace a great asset to the team. He hit the bar in the first fourty five minutes which could have given us the lead, but at the other end Southport scored from a simple cross right on the stroke of the interval. This was a horrible time to concede and we didn’t seem to recover. In the secondhalf we struggled to create many opportunities to equalise and resorted to lumping the ball long up the field by the end. Southport 22

held out for a vital 3 points for them to bring them to within a point of the Villagers in the table. Luckily for us nobody else in the top 10 managed to win so we didn’t lose much ground on anybody in and around the

relegation zone. The lads are putting a real shift in every week, but not quite getting the rewards at the moment. The main reason for this is a lack of goals with Ferriby registering just 1 goal in their last 7 games. Thompson was brought in to try and boost the strike force and he is looking promising. He scored the winner at Gateshead and if he can grab a couple more he will go on

a run of scoring for us. Chances are being created for a few players, but we just need to be more clinical in front of goal because we are being punished too often for not putting chances away.

Tonight we face Chester who sit 15th at the time of writing. This represents a chance to pick up some more much needed points at home against a team just a few places above us. Our home form is absolutely vital for us to have a chance to survive so it is imperative we get something from this fixture. Enjoy the game! Sam
