THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

STEVE HOUSHAM May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Darlington to the Eon Visual Media Stadium this afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome back and we our finally off the mark, before we mention them points we must talk about the games before. I would like to apologies for the performance against Brackley, it was the worst I’ve experienced as a manager. As well as sending an apology to you the fans, I also apologies to my wife and kids because I took my work home and was a grumpy Dad that weekend. We know it is going to be a tough season, but I expect us to compete in every game. However, on that day, we threw in the towel, so we then went to Alfreton with a point to prove and we had brought in Akeel Francis from Rotherham United. He went straight into the squad and gave us the lift we needed and we welcome him to the club. On the night it was a much better display and, although both teams never really looked like breaking the deadlock, a draw would have been a fair result. But for all their effort we was denied a point with a late goal that we could have dealt with better, so four defeats in a row and our next game saw us travel up north to take on Blyth

Spartans, who were on a two-game unbeaten run, scoring eight goals. But we set about the task in hand from the off and, without doubt, put in our best performance of the season defending well. As the game grew, so did the players and we got our first goal of the season from Akeel and with it a belated three points. We now take on Darlington who are fancied by all to be challenging for promotion come the end of season. If we show our spirit and desire, like at Blyth, we will be in with a shout. On the downside Danny Emerton picked up a knee injury and we will be hoping it’s not a long-term injury. We all know how important he is to the team and football club, so we are hoping for good news. Finally I hope you stick behind the boys and they give you a performance you deserve. It’s OK hearing we improved away, but we want you to see it at home. Up the Villagers! THE CAPTAIN

THE CAPTAIN Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Darlington in the National League North. A warm welcome back to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Darlington. Since my last programme notes we have had three games. First up we took on Brackley Town and that defeat was really tough to take. The whole team didn’t show up and I can only apologise to the supporters and to Housh for that display. Since then at both Alfreton and Blyth, the work rate and team performances have been much better and everyone’s been working together and putting a shift in. We were unlucky to come away with a defeat on Tuesday night, but to pick up the win at Blyth was great and we’ve got that monkey off our back now. If we keep that standard up for the rest of the season we will be absolutely fine and start climbing that table! The changing room was buzzing after the game and everyone’s looking forward to the two games coming up now. Thank you for your continued support it means a lot to the lads! DARLINGTON

North Ferriby United host Darlington hoping for back-to-back wins for the first time this season. The Villagers will, though, have to be at the top of their game against a Darlington side who are flying high in the National League North. The Quakers have picked up 10 points from their opening five games and a further win this afternoon could springboard them as high as fourth if results go their way. Darlington opened their new campaign with a potentially tricky away game with Salford City, but a brace from David Ferguson ensured a 2-0 victory. The Quakers then faced consecutive home games against Gainsborough Trinity and Alfreton respectively.

However both yielded six points, by way of a thrilling 4-3 win over Trinity, before scoring another four in the 4-1 triumph over Alfreton. A 0-0 draw away at York followed, before Darlington suffered their first defeat of the campaign at home to Alfreton Town going down in a narrow 1-0 defeat.

RECENT HISTORY

Despite being under new ownership the following season (2009-10), the club was relegated out of the Football League into the Conference for the second time in its history. The fans thought that there was a bright new beginning when Quakers battled through to Wembley for the third time in the FA Trophy – overturning a two goal deficit against Gateshead in the semi final along the way – and on this occasion the previous despair turned into sheer delight when Chris Senior headed a last-minute winner against Mansfield. Unfortunately the win was not a springboard for success, and by the turn of 2012, the club was back into administration for the third time. After overcoming several difficult hurdles and negotiating for many hours, a supporters group took control of the club with the aim of making it stable once again, but the FA controversially ruled, despite an appeal, that Quakers should be demoted from the Conference back to the Northern League – an unprecedented drop of four divisions. The new look club, now under fan ownership, wisely decided to leave the costly Arena and agreed a groundshare with Bishop Auckland at Heritage Park twelve miles away. Despite the relegation, the fans stood by the club, and an average attendance record for the Northern League of over 1,300 – around three times the previous official best in the league – saw Quakers win the Northern League title and promotion to the Evostik League First Division North with a triple hundred of points, goals and goal difference ahead of previous champions Spennymoor Town. It was a magnificent performance,

considering that when Martin Gray took over in the summer of 2012, the club only had one player! In season 2013-14, Quakers finished second in the table to Curzon Ashton, but lost in the play off semi final to Ramsbottom. The crowd average was still well over a thousand. Happily in season 2014-15 Quakers went one step further, when they beat neighbours Spennymoor 3-2 and Bamber Bridge 2-0 in the play offs, and gained promotion to the EvoStik NPL Premier Division, the second promotion in just three years. And they followed that up by winning that league, clinching the EvoStik League title ahead of Blyth Spartans with a remarkable 7-1 away win at Whitby in the penultimate game of the season. Quakers played six league games in the last fortnight of the season, with Nathan Cartman top scorer on 19. Thanks to a huge amount of financial commitment by the fans and FSIF grant aid, Quakers moved back to their home town on Boxing Day 2016 to play Halifax Town at their new Blackwell Meadows ground – which is rented from Darlington Rugby Club -- in the Vanarama National League North. Quakers won the game 3-2, and went to finish fifth in the table, but were unable to play in the play offs because the new ground wasn’t up to the required standard. Striker Mark Beck achieved a unique double – he was the last player to score at the old home of Heritage Park, and the first to score at the new home of Blackwell Meadows. During the summer, more fundraising followed, and work began on a new playing area and a new seated stand. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED Francis (62)

MATCH Akeel FRANCIS

Saturday 19 August 2017 | Croft Park | Att: 678 Ferriby broke their scoring and points ducks with a superb win at Blyth Spartans. An Akeel Francis goal after 62 minutes sealed the win for The Villagers. The win came on the back of an excellent team performance in a game that was played in testing windy conditions throughout. The wind was strong, blew across the ground and swirled about. This made passing difficult for both sides. Jake Picton and Jake Skelton were tremendous in the centre of Ferriby’s defence and won virtually everything in the air, despite the testing conditions. In a game where players were bound to make mistakes because of the wind, Ferriby made far fewer than Blyth. Bobby Johnson and Joe Pugh continually hassled and harried Blyth’s midfield and regularly forced them to play the ball back to the defence. This allowed Joel Ambalu and Francis to continually press the defence. Russ Fry and Simon Russell worked hard in midfield and eventually controlled in the second-half. Ross Durrant was solid in goal and Steve Brogan and Jordan Cooke not only defended well, but found time to attack the wings. Things did not really change in the second with Alberto Seidi, Callum Rzonca and Kyle Dixon, on as substitutes, also making their presence known. The first-half was fairly even and it was Ferriby who came close to opening the scoring after just five minutes. Steve Brogan’s wellstruck 22-yard free-kick was turned round the post by the diving Peter Jameson. 12

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

Durrant did well to block a shot from Daniel Maguire as the striker burst through. Durrant also did well to tip Jordan Watson header over before producing a diving save to deny Blyth a goal. For their part, Ferriby pushed hard, but clear chance did not come but they did cause a lot of anxious moments for Blyth. The second-half largely belonged to The Villagers. They mastered the conditions better than Blyth and, for the first time this season they found their shooting boots. Francis put one just over the bar under pressure from Jameson and a defender. However, the striker did not have to wait long to open his account. Substitute Callum Rzonca burst down the right. His cross found Francis t the far post and he hammered home the ball. Pugh, twice, Rzonca, Skelton, Russell and Dixon all went close as The Villagers took control of the game. The second and clinching goal would not come and there was always the worry that Blyth would snatch an equaliser that they did not really deserve. The final whistle was relief to the players, managers and Ferriby’s band of travelling fans. Manager Steve Housham was a delighted man after the game, saying: “The shooting practice paid off! It probably could, and should, have been more. We had chances to kill game off. “It’s great to get that first win under our belts Blyth is always a difficult place to get a result and the players were tremendous.”

VIEW FROM THE STANDS

VIEW FROM THE STANDS by Sam Shepherd Today we welcome Darlington to the Eon Visual Media Stadium for the first time. It’s sure to be another tough game for us as Darlington have promotion ambitions this season and have started the campaign well. Ferriby finally got off the mark last weekend with a well-deserved win at Blyth Spartans. Steve Housham’s side fought hard throughout the game and after absorbing some pressure from the Spartans they found a winning goal. New signing Akeel Francis got the winner and Housham will be hoping Francis can be a consistent source of goals for Ferriby. There had been signs of improvement in the match at Alfreton, as Ferriby were much more resolute defensively and created chances but unfortunately, they couldn’t take them and were punished to lose 1-0. They finally put the start of the season right last Saturday though by beating Blyth and we all hope that will be a springboard for the season. The side have been much more solid at the back in the last two games and Ferriby will hope to continue their defensive improvement today as they take on Darlington. The visitors have been free scoring so far this season and will see this as an opportunity to add another three points to their promotion charge. Steve Housham has been here before, though, who would have thought we would have beaten 22

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

Forest Green Rovers last season for example? The Villagers have been underdogs before and hopefully they can beat the odds again today. On Monday we travel to face our bitter rivals Gainsborough Trinity at Northolme for another exciting encounter. Steve Housham will be returning to his old stomping ground as will a few of the players so they will need no extra motivation to bring home three points. Housham was well liked at Gainsborough, but he will be keen to leave Northolme as a less popular figure on Monday with three points in his back pocket. We have had mixed results at Gainsborough in recent seasons as tends to happen in derby games. Trinity have been scoring a lot of goals, but also leaking them so Ferriby will need to be resolute in defence and look to hit Gainsborough’s flimsy defence on the counter attack. We need to get a result today first though and hopefully we can build on last week’s first win of the season. Enjoy the game! Sam Shepherd North Ferriby United Supporter
