CHAIRMAN’S NOTES
Paul
BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Romford FC to our home at SCT, on this September Tuesday evening, and after some hospitality and hopefully an enjoyable game they all have a safe return journey home. May I also personally once again take this opportunity to welcome all those local resident’s that have decided to join us as new supporters through our season ticket initiative this season. I know that the benefit of the £30.00 season ticket for 4 has made a lot of difference to the families that are involved at this time with this initiative, and I hope during the next few weeks we have more families join us and become new supporters. Even with the new support of the local community, our gates on match days are well below the average for our league and at times it makes me wonder if Thamesmead residents, including the businesses, really wants a football club within their borough. The club continue to work in

the local schools coaching the youngsters FOC, we are now putting together another initiative where we will be working in the local community in partnership with the local Police to supply FOC coaching to the young people of Thamesmead in and around the Town, with the areas called “The Caged Areas” these are areas with pitches/courts marked out either on a sports surface or concrete. We whole heartedly believe that it is our responsibility as a main resident of the community to put our weight behind ensuring that anti-social behaviour is greatly reduced, and hope by our efforts and with the assistance of the local Police we can ensure Thamesmead is a safer and better place for the community to live and work. At this time, I would like to thank both Gary and Mike together with PC Chris Molnar for all of their efforts to get this initiative off the ground, I am intending to advise the Peabody Group of our intention to ensure that it is fully publicized and supported by them, so please watch this space.
So there you are I feel beyond doubt that we are doing more than is expected of a football club within the community. As well as working in the community we offer both an education package and a first class coaching facility within our academy that is open to all the local youngsters that would like to consider a life in football. Just look at our first-team and look at the number of players that have passed through the academy structure and made it into the firstteam squad, if you have the ability the choice is yours. Since I joined the club in 2012 as a director and then in early 2015 when I fully took over control as the owner I have always felt that it was always a one-way street, here I am today personally funding the club, we do not have any revenue streams other than minor sponsorship and advertising, as a tenant I have to pay Peabody rent for our teams to play at the SCT. I have to pay for the training facilities at the SCT, I also have to supply
CHAIRMAN’S NOTES
a suitable budget for Tommy my first-team manager to be able to put together a squad that will fight hopefully for promotion even if by the Play-offs. We as a club do not receive any % of the turnover through the bars on match days, so in reality if I decided to say no more funding the club would fold with immediate effect as I am the only revenue supplier. So maybe the question I should be asking is when are the businesses of Thamesmead going to show their support for the club, we as a club are continuing to supply personnel FOC to carry out this community work. All I ask is that the business community, as well as the residents, show their appreciation of what we are achieving by coming to watch our games and the businesses get involved on the commercial side of the club, Mike Green is our commercial man and his details are in the programme so there is no excuse you could not make contact, please do so whilst we are still here. Because I personally feel at this time how long before I decide enough is enough of throwing my hard earnt money on running a football club? If the local community is not bothered if we are here or not, be assured I feel very strongly about it at this time maybe because of my current ill health I am not too sure. As someone said to me last Saturday, Paul everyone at the Club is very appreciated of what you are doing and have done since you joined but how long will you continue? As we all no it’s a one way street, we would fully understand if you walked away from the club, I replied maybe that’s true but I
wanted to give the community of Thamesmead the opportunity to support the club before I considered any other options. But it’s quite clear without our own revenue streams such as bar etc, which keeps non-league clubs financially viable to run, our gates this season only pay the officials on a match day, something that cannot continue to be an option. Therefore to ensure the clubs survival we need the urgent support of both the businesses and the residents of Thamesmead, we need your support both through the gate and on the commercial side, otherwise the time will come that a difficult decision will have to be made sooner than later. Well here we are having a break from Ryman League football and start concentrating on the cups that that we have entered this season. I am sure it will allow the manager to give all those fringe players that are available the opportunity of a game, especially as we have a very important game next Saturday when we play away to Hanwell Town FC in the next round of the FA Cup. So let’s all enjoy the game, unfortunately I will not be at the game tonight but I will be at the FA Cup match next week, and if anyone is interested we are running a coach to Hanwell please make contact with Mike for times and prices. Enjoy the evening. Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

ASSISTANT’S NOTES
ALEX
O’BRIEN Good evening everyone - tonight sees the start of our league cup campaign as we welcome our neighbours from Romford to Bayliss Avenue. Saturday saw us take a deserved point off of league leaders Bury Town. To be honest, I think that we should have won the game – we had a lot of the play and a lot of delivery into the box but we just can’t unfortunately kill the chances off. It’s goals that win games and if we’d have taken more of the chances that we’ve created, I’m sure that we’d be up there with teams like Bury Town. We’ve played all right but we’re just not killing sides off… Saturday was a bit of a stop start game with all the injuries which probably didn’t help either side really but players health first and foremost must be the most important thing – it’s only a game of football and when people get bangs on heads as Joe and Bode did games must be stopped. It happens and when it does we’re lucky to have a great physio. Carly was straight on there on Saturday and she was brilliant – we can’t thank her enough for everything that she does with the boy’s – she really does know her stuff as I’m sure any of you who
saw Saturday’s game will agree. Now we’re at a stage where we’re fine tuning the squad ahead of tonight’s game and it will give us a further chance to look at the squad as a whole. We’re at a stage now where players are going; players are coming in; and there’s now good competition for every position – its gives everyone that little bit of hunger. It helps Tom and I to get more out of players, which is essential. Unfortunately, we released Cesc at the weekend – he never really hit the heights that we’re used to him hitting. We’re at a club where if we need to get a player in one unfortunately has to go because we need that financial bit to secure the player coming through the door. It’s horrible, but its football. It’s never ever been personal – we’ve all had it; players come and go but it’s never a personal thing… Young Tom O’Conner came in Saturday – we really like him and know him and he gave us something in midfield against Bury that we didn’t have and long may it continue. He’s very strong and good on the ball – he and Bode were good at the weekend and hopefully we’ll get a lot out of them in the weeks to come.
After tonight, we’ll focus completely on the FA Cup tie coming up at the weekend. It’s a winnable tie but at the same time an awkward one. I’ve been in football long enough now to know that if you go to a place like Hanwell with the attitude that you’ve just got to put on your boots and get a result, it just won’t happen! They will want to beat us from the warm up to the warm down and if we don’t step up, work that extra yard, we will be in for a really tough afternoon. If we go there and perform putting our chances away we should be all right. But if we think that all we’ve got to go is turn up, get off the coach, then we’ll be in for a shock. They’re not a bad side – I remember when I was growing up and fresh in the game, you always knew going to Hanwell and you’d get a tough game… and that’s exactly what I expect we’ll get on Saturday. Thanks for all your support as always, and we’ll see you after the game in the bar… Cheers Alex O’Brien First-Team Assistant

defeats against Waltham Abbey and Aveley. - teams they would have pinpointed as potentiall points. But the club have looked to find their form and that started with a 2-2 home draw with Ware. The was followed by a 3-1 FA Cup exit against Harlow Town on their artificial pitch. They returned to league action four days later and drew 1-1 with Phoenix Sports before beating Tilbury 1-0 last time out thanks to a goal from Ryan Boswell.
CLUB HISTORY This is the third Romford Football Club, both their predecessors having competed at some point in the Southern League, and each time having been defunct for fourteen years before the name was revived.
In February 1992 a meeting was arranged to gauge interest in reviving the club. Shortly after the Club was formed, a ground-share arranged with Hornchurch and senior status granted from the Essex FA. With Lyndon Lynch at the helm, finished in ninth place This was followed by fourth place in 1993-94 and third the season after. The summer of 1995 was all change, as Howie stepped down and Lynch chose to move on. With an almost entirely new committee Boro started again from scratch, moving in with Ford United and appointing as joint managers Donal McGovern and Alan Marson. There was another period of upheaval for Romford in 1996, as the agreement with Ford was terminated and Boro finished the season sharing with Collier Row at Sungate. However promotion was secured with three games to play and Boro overtook Leatherhead at the top of the table for the first time going into the final match, where a 3-0 win at home to Hungerford Town brought the championship to Sungate. With McGovern and Marson moving on, former reserve team manager Les Whitton was promoted to become first team manager in the summer of 1997. Boro finished seventh in Division One, top scorers with 92 goals. The tail end of the season had been largely overshadowed by concern over the Clubs future, and the eventual defeat of a takeover bid resulted in the departure of several Club personnel and the entire first team management, leaving a committee almost entirely hand-picked from the terraces, while Dave Howie returned after three years away.
Reserve team manager Steve Wheeler took over the first team and managed to keep the side in the top half of the table on a reduced budget, but left in January. First team coach Amin Levitt was immediately appointed manager, and plenty of fresh blood was quickly recruited with reserve and youth team players also being promoted. The response was magnificent but again another bombshell came when the Sungate ground was closed by the League. The return to Sungate ahead of the 1999/00 season had a profound effect on the team as they won ten of their next thirteen games. However the Club soon found itself fighting relegation and Sungate went through another period of closure. The relegation threat was finally put to rest with three matches remaining, and Boro were more than happy with a final position of nineteenth. The constant uncertainty finally took its toll and Amin Levitt resigned in October to be replaced by John Bennett, but in December Boro were suspended by the Ryman League with no return to Sungate in sight - Bennett left and Romford were left with no option but to release the entire first team squad. The Club were finally able to return to Sungate in mid-January, and Paul Withey was appointed to the first team. The task of keeping the Club in Division One proved to be beyond everybody. Sadly, despite an injection of fresh blood the poor run of form continued into the 2001-02 season and Withey was replaced as manager by Paul Joynes at the end of August. But Boro still finished the season well adrift. A return to familiar territory in the Essex Senior League and back at Rush Green Road saw a strong recovery after the struggles of recent years, and Boro stayed on the edge of the leading pack all

season, finishing fifth. Paul Joynes left for Tilbury and former Boro player Mark Reed stepped in to replace him, emulating the previous season’s fifth-place finish after leading the table for two months. In season 2006-07 Mark Reed lead us to our best season since rejoining the Essex Senior League as we finished runner-up to Brentwood Town. Then during the 2007-08 season Mark Reed stepped down for personal reasons and Paul Martin was promoted to the job. Romford moved up the table to finish in 5th place. The following season Romford had to leave Rush Green when Fords sold the ground to West Ham United. A ground share agreement was drawn up with Aveley FC and Romford were able to carry on. In Paul’s first full season in charge Romford took the Essex Senior League by storm, winning the title with 71 points and losing just one game, and with it promotion to the Ryman League Division 1 North. With consolidation and avoiding the drop straight back to the Essex Senior a priority Boro got off to a good start but ended up finising 13th. The start of the 2011-12 season saw Romford get off to a flying start in the league and added good runs in both national cup competitions. Despite the odd good performance Romford slowly dropped down the table to finish 12th. The clubs third season in the Ryman League saw us finish in 13th place, a drop of one on the previous season. The season 2012-13 saw a strong finish and Romford finally end up in 8th position, their best performance since gaining promotion to the Ryman League. In the 2013-14 season Romford finished 11th with 69 points from 46 games, winning 21. The 2014-15 was a bit of a struggle with relegation worries that were ended when we won our last three matches.

THE COMPETITION
TONIGHT’S COMPETITION
IT’S HISTORY
This is the 43rd Ryman League Cup competition since its inception in 1974. That first competition, entry was restricted to the Isthmian Division Two clubs and Tilbury were the very first winners beating Croydon Amateurs in the final over two legs. The following season, all member clubs competed in the competition for the first time and have done since 1975-76. The competition has had various sponsors down the years. It’s was known as the Hitachi Cup (between 1977-85), the AC Delco Cup (between 1985-91) and most recently was the Robert Dyas League Cup. The competition is now called the “Alan Turvey Trophy” as a tribute to the League’s former Chairman. Last season, Kingstonian, from the Premier Division, won the Trophy with a 5-0 victory over Division One South’s Faversham Town – the two sides had beaten Wingate & Finchley and Sittingbourne respectively in the last four.
