MANAGER’S COLUMN

STEVE

HOUSHAM

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Forest Green Rovers to our home this afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on high-flying Forest Green Rovers. Here we are for our second home game in a week and preparations been a lot better given it helps the players to recover quicker rather than traveling along way on a Tues night then go to work and train on

Thursday. Today we have to enforce a change in the starting line-up due to Ben Middleton’s sending off on Tues night. I really felt for Ben as he has

been playing well and was harshly sent off in my view! We have enough in depth the squad to deputise for Ben but I’m always on the lookout for the right players in the market to help our cause. For the last few games we have been banging on the door the performances and effort the lads

put in deserve more than what they are getting. We are confident that if we keep playing the way we are the right result will come our way we just have got to keep believing and one game the chances will turn

into goals. Kyle Wootton has joined us to try and help us get them goals he has now played two games and fitted in really well and looks lively he’s hit the bar in both the games and I’m sure, like the other strikers, once he gets his first the more will come. Today we host Forest Green, top of the table. On paper and the form guide it looks like mission impossible, but if the players perform to their highest and get a bit of lady luck could we upset the tables? We will definitely be going out there to do just that there is no pressure on the players so they will play with big hearts and freedom to hopefully get the right result. I hope all the fans who travelled to Macclesfield last Saturday had a great day despite the result you was all a credit to North Ferriby and like I’ve said in earlier posts keep believing your support means so much to the club ,but also to this group of young players and we all are grateful of your support! THE OPPOSITION

THE VISITORS...

FOREST GREEN ROVERS

Table-topping Forest Green Rovers visit the Eon Visual Media stadium to take on the North Ferriby United in the National League... North Ferriby United face the unenviable task of trying to halt the Forest Green Rovers train surging at the top of the National League standing. The club have set the early pace and have lost a mere once in twelve outings in all competitions. A run of six consecutive victories between August and September have seen the club the envy of most in the form guide. More impressive is that they have managed to keep clean sheet in their last games, and when coming up against a goal-shy North Ferriby, the 4

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

task seems large. But that’s on paper and as we well know shocks can happen in football. The Villagers pushed both Macclesfield Town and Chester close recently falling to 1-0 losses but they will take solace from their performances. Whilst many will see this as a free hit, Ferriby will come into this game with little pressure on them and that may work in their favour - with victory potentially lifting them out of the relegation zone for the first it time in over a number of weeks.

THE OPPOSITION

CLUB HISTORY

FOREST GREEN ROVERS Forest Green Rovers began their life in the hamlet that bears their name in October 1889, founded by the local Non Conformist Church Minister and in 1894 Forest Green became founding members of the Mid Gloucestershire League. They switched from the MGL when it folded in 1902, to become members of the newly formed Stroud League and also members of the Dursley and District League which they won in 1903, the Clubs first silverware. 1926 was the year that their field was officially enclosed and given the name “The Lawn”, where Rovers played from 1889 to 2006. The committee members then bought their field at auction on 1936 for the princely sum of £120, and after the Second World War, the Forest Green Rovers Supporters Club was formed, and with their voluntary graft and enthusiasm “The Lawn” was transformed into one of the premier grounds in the County, playing host to County matches and Cup Finals from the 1950s onwards. The Supporters Club built their own Social Club which opened in 1968, providing revenue unheard of in previous eras, and with John Duff, an ex-player elected as Chairman, an ambitious upward flight was put in motion. Rovers joined the newly formed County League in 1968 and played under manager Peter Goring, for the next 11 years moving up again to the Hellenic League in 1975 under Peter’s stewardship. In 1982, Rovers achieved fame at

Wembley winning the FA Vase 3-1 and at the same time winning the Hellenic League and moving into the Southern League Midland Division. High hopes over the forthcoming years dwindled into thoughts of what might have been and Rovers struggled throughout the 80s near the foot of the table and a brief and unsuccessful period under a name change – Stroud FC. The arrival of Trevor Horsley in 1992 saw the Club name changed back to Forest Green Rovers and the rest, as they say, is history. Frank Gregan arrived as manager in 1994 taking the club to the Southern League Southern Division title in 1997 and into the Southern League Premier Division for the first time. The following year a showdown with Merthyr Tydfil in front of a record crowd of 2962 at the newly upgraded “Lawn” saw the Little Club on The Hill through to the Conference National. A finish of 9th in the Conference was achieved in 2003 but this was then followed by further relegation battles up until 2006 when relegation was again avoided on the last day of the season. Whilst the team were struggling on the pitch, ambitious plans were put forward in 2002 to move the Club to a new Football League standard ground 400 meters away, still in the hamlet of Forest Green. Planning permission was granted in 2005 and the new stadium was built over the next year,

funded by the sale of the old ground for housing development. Carrying on a tradition set by supporters back in the 1950s the new stadium was painted from head to toe by supporters all on a voluntary basis. The New Lawn was officially opened in September 2006 and the stadium hosted a crowd of 4836 in January 2009 for the visit of Derby County in the FA Cup 3rd Round, with Rovers losing 4 – 3 to a last minute penalty. In May 2016, the club reached the National League promotion final at Wembley, but missed out on promotion to the Football League in a 3-1 defeat against Grimsby Town under the caretaker manager of Scott Bartlett. Rovers’ highest placing in the National League is 2nd (2015-16 season). They have been in the top flight of the non-league game since 1998, making them the longest serving club - a remarkable feat which many did not think would last one season. In August 2010, with the club in financial trouble, green energy company Ecotricity got involved for a mixture of social and environmental reasons. At FGR we are creating a truly sustainable football club, which would be a world first. Somewhere we can demonstrate all of our thinking and green technology, and through that engage with a new, large and passionate audience.

GUEST COLUMN

View From The

STANDS Sam Shepherd looks at the harsh reality of life in the National League in his regular matchday column... Unfortunately since my last column Ferriby’s poor run of form has continued. They have succumbed to two 1-0 defeats, away at Macclesfield and at home to Chester. This means they are still 21st in the league and have only scored 1 goal in nine games. I always like to look on the bright side however, and Ferriby played very well at 3rd placed Macclesfield and were only denied a point by an extremely dubious penalty decision by the referee. Mark Gray clearly won the ball in my opinion and the home fans and players barely appealed yet the spot kick was given and converted which sealed Ferriby’s fate. New signing Kyle Wootton looked dangerous all game and could have got us a vital equaliser, but the crossbar denied him when he hit a shot on the turn inside the box. Ferriby took a larger than usual away following to the game thanks in no small part to the donation from the players and management towards the cost of the coach. We were all very grateful for this and Steve Housham has certainly adhered himself to the Ferriby faithful since taking over at the Eon Visual Media Stadium. 22

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

On Tuesday night we faced a bang in-form Chester side who had just defeated Dover 5-0 at the weekend. Ferriby dominated for large spells of the game, but as has been the problem a few times this season they failed to convert their chances into goals.

nature of the National League. You have to take your chances and if you don’t you will be punished.

Reece Thompson missed a great chance but he was by no means the only one to miss-fire in front of goal for the Villagers. Ben Middleton was dismissed for a second bookable offence midway through the second-half and this turned the game on its head.
