I heard an interview with a football league manager last week in which he was talking about how no-one can explain the completely different atmosphere under lights and anyone who saw either our replay win over Guernsey or even last week’s league cup win over Romford can associate with exactly what he means I’m sure.
in tonight’s edition of “The Mead” – Tommy gives us the low-down on Saturday’s drawn tie; there’s news of Joe Denny following his horrific looking injury last week and what edition of The Mead would be complete with the latest from the chairman’s office. Thanks as ever for your support and we wish all our visitors a safe trip home. Cheers Greenie

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES
Paul
BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Hanwell FC to our home at SCT, on this September Tuesday evening, for the replay of the Emirates FA Cup second round qualifying match and after some hospitality and hopefully an enjoyable game they all have a safe return journey home. Firstly, I would like to thank Bob Fisher and his Committee who made our visit to their ground on Saturday a very enjoyable event, especially after my own journey on Saturday that should have taken one hour forty minutes but ended up taking three and half hours. It would seem I was not the only late arrive as the Referee arrived late which resulted in the kick off being put back to 3-45 – I only hope the Officials and Team of Hanwell have an easier journey here

this evening. As I believe I said in my previous notes, this round of the FA Cup is very important for both Clubs, but for this Club we have never progressed further in this Cup so we would like to re write the history books, and of course I must not forget the financial reward which is also very acceptable. Well our two teams before Saturdays match had only met previously in the London Cup and the result was a 3-1 win for Thamesmead. So I went to Reynolds Field with an open mind, as Hanwell had won the previous Saturday against Royston Town with a resounding score of 4-1. But as usual we had had the team watched on a number of occasions, so we knew their strengths and Tommy would have a game plan in hand.
Anyway the game kicked off at 3-45, and you could see that Thamesmead wanted the game and I am sure the Gaffer will cover the game in full technically, but as a Supporter I felt the score line should have been 3-1 to us at half time with the finishing score being 4-2 if you calculated the chances both teams had through the game. And when I say chances they certainly were, in my opinion with regard to our team, great missed chances, but that’s Cup Football for you so I hope both teams enjoy the game tonight and that Thamesmead players take their chances tonight. But whatever the score I wish the winners well for the next round, but hoping deep down that we will be in the position to rewrite the history books tomorrow. Away from the First Team I am

advised that the Academy has started last week with the main Academy running from the SCT, but also with a separate satellite Academy running from a local Sixth Form College. So keep the hard work up Ian and Gary – I am very proud of what we have all achieved and also committed during the close season – now the hard work really begins! In the community, we are finalising our new partnership with the Thamesmead Police with the “Cage Initiative” as I call it, and at this time, I would like to thank both Gary and Mike together with PC Chris Molnar for all of their efforts to get this initiative off the ground. Be assured I am committing all of the Clubs resources – both labour and financial – to this project as I believe we as a Club within the Community deserves to put something back into the community, and to this end I believe that all the other large organisations within the local community should be advised of our intentions as I feel very strongly that everyone should be involved in some way, however large or small, as it will all help the viability of the project. I personally do not believe it should just left to us, so I am intending to ensure this partnership is fully publicised and hopefully supported by those other local organisations. Finally a very big personal thank you must go to Mike Green our Marketing and Communication – a guy that most people only hear as he works the tannoy on Match Day, but during the day he has been working tirelessly behind the scenes working on a number of new initiatives within the Community mainly with the local schools. Recently he has spread his net, and I am sure in a very short period of time, I will be in a position to advise you all of what Ian, Mike and Gary have achieved for the benefit
of the local Community at times in very difficult circumstances, as some people always like to make our aims that much harder, even though we are giving our time free in my opinion for the benefit of the young people of Thamesmead. But they are now in sight of the winning post, so I thank you all for your determination to ensure we continue to be seen within the local community. For me personally as the Owner and Chairman of this fine Club, this coming week is going to be a very interesting week, because after burning many months and weeks of mid night oil, I am awaiting on receiving important news that hopefully will change the future path that want this Club to take to ensure its remains financially viable, and not just relying on my finances to ensure viability. Here I am with in my opinion, with one of the best Management Teams within Non-League Football at our level. Ian Docker as Director of Football and Academy Manager my no 2; Tommy Warrilow, First Team Manager together with Tommy’s team led by Alex O’Brien (Tommy’s no 2) and so I have to ensure that off the field the Club mirrors the expertise and support that these guys are giving me week after week without hesitation. And that’s my job! So hopefully in due course I will be able to make the news public to all of you, but until then we carry on with the job in hand and tonight the boys need to take the Club through to the next round of this Cup – we all know they are capable of achieving this but be assured, Hanwell will be a strong team to play against if Saturday is anything to go by. Now let’s enjoy the football. Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

MANAGER’S NOTES
Tommy
WARRILOW Good evening everyone and welcome to anouther cup night at Bayliss Avenue! A welcome to all of our visitors from Hanwell and I hope that there wasn’t the same sort of travel chaos that some experienced on Saturday which led to the tie not kicking off until “half-time” at 3:45! I have to say that our visit to Reynolds Field on Saturday was great as, just as with our trip to Guernsey, we met some more really nice people, but I’m annoyed we didn’t win the game. I thought we had enough chances in the first-half to be out of sight but then at the end there were a couple
of occasions when they could have won the game. I thought both sides were honest, hard-working, but overall I have to say that we should have won the game – but we didn’t so we go again tonight! But at least we were in the hat for the next round yesterday lunchtime! The Hanwell gaffer Ray Duffy is a really nice guy and he knows a few people that I also know in the game. This is the FA Cup and we’ll concentrate on that. I’ve been asked if I’m concerned that we’ve had to call off another league game for tonight’s replay and the answer is no! We’d rather still be in the FA Cup than not at this stage of the season not
just for financial reasons. I’ve never been a manager who’s had any real cup success – never having a really good run in it – but I feel that this season we’ve earned our right to be here. We’ve had two tough games with Guernsey home and away; Chertsey was a hard game as was Saturday – but in all of our ties, we should have been done and dusted by half-time. But at one-nil games aren’t over. Hanwell are a good side – we mustn’t forget that they’re a solid team – a good side who play at the same level as us, so at least we knew that we were in that hat on Monday
“The longer our cup run goes on the better, as it’ll mean that more players become available.” 06

MANAGER’S NOTES
morning. I do though have to say that I think the officials spoiled the day on Saturday – both in turning up late and in their performance. But let’s face it, the league is the league! I’ve said to the boys since day one that we’re punching at a reasonable level at the moment with a completely new squad – I’m not overly fussed where we are in the league as it’s so tight all the way down the table. The gap’s between those at the top and those at the bottom is nothing – in most places its less than two games! Again on Saturday the results meant that it’s crunched things up yet again. The longer our cup run goes on the better as it’ll mean that as we strengthen all the time in theory at least our league form could improve all the time. End of the day the longer we’re in the competition the better
off financially the club is which must be a good thing for everyone!
and as I’ve said to the boys, “it’s not a personal thing, it’s a football thing!”
On the player front, I’m delighted that Ike’s joined us – he was going to go and play at Salisbury full-time but it didn’t work out. He then went and played at Erith & Belvedere and banged in four or five goals in notime at all. He gives us a bit of pace over the top to get into the right areas and he was very disappointed Saturday as he knew he could have had a hat-trick but at least he was causing problems.
I’ve come here to push us on, but you can’t strip down every single game as you’ve going to lose some, you’re going to be poor in some but the overall picture is that from preseason we’ve got better and better and better – we’re creating chances whilst at the same time we’ve let some poor goals in, but we’re definitely heading the right way.
It’s great too that Warren’s come back to us – it’s a great plus after he went to Welling after our pre-season game; Tom’s come in and I want to look after him and push his career on as he’s a very gifted player. End of the day there will be more coming in – as we’ve said before coming and going is part of football today
Thanks as ever for your support – it really does give everyone in green a great lift. See you in the bar after the game and hopefully it won’t be too late! Enjoy the game! Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

He too would like to thank everyone for their support, concerns and best wishes…

HANWELL TOWN
Today we welcome Hanwell Town for the conclusion to another FA Cup clash.
Neither side could find that all important second goal and the match headed to a replay.
The two teams met on Saturday with the Mead taking a 1-0 lead early in the second-half through Adrian Stone.
It’s not the first time Thamesmead have been forced into a replay having suffered the same fate against Guernsey earlier in the season.
However, despite missing numerous chances the away side were made to pay when, Jessie Kewley-Graham struck in the 72nd minute.

The Mead will want to get the job done in normal time but must be wary of a Hanwell Town side with one defeat in ten.
CLUB HISTORY Hanwell Town was originally founded in 1920 by a team of ‘Geordies’ working in the area and it is believed that this explains the black and white striped colours which are still used today.
The club were in the London League from 1924 to 1927 and it was in this period that they won their first major honour, the Middlesex F.A Junior Charity Cup in 1926. Little else is known about the club before their disbandment at the outset of the second world war. The club reformed in 1947/1948 playing in the Dauntless League where they climbed up through the divisions earning promotion in four successive seasons. In 1970/1971 the club gained promotion to the Middlesex County League. The club remained in the Middlesex County League throughout the 1970’s playing at Ealing Central Sports Ground, their home for over twenty years but in June 1981 they achieved their ambition of obtaining a ground of their own when they moved to the then derelict Reynolds Field, their current home.
managed the side since the 1986/1987 season stood down to be replaced by former player Ray Duffy with Roy continuing his association with the club in a coaching capacity. The side immediately gained promotion to the Premier Division finishing in runners up spot to Holmer Green.
Following this promotion the club maintained a top half position in the League table in each season except for one in the following seven seasons. In season 2005-06 with promotion to level Four a key objective, the club managed to finish in third place just edging out Harefield United on goal difference Two thirds of the way through that season Ray Duffy resigned and was replaced as joint managers by his former assistant Danny Vincent and former player Pat Gavin. Third place enabled Town to win promotion to The British Gas Business Southern League for the 2006/2007 season.
The club was granted Senior status for the commencement of the 1983-84 season. This enabled them to join The London Spartan League and they immediately won the Senior Division to gain promotion to the Premier Division where they remained until the amalgamation of the Spartan League with the South Midlands League in 1997/1998.
However, Town’s stay in the Southern League only lasted one season as they finished second from bottom and were relegated back to the Molten Spartan South Midlands League. During their stay in the Southern League, Town parted company with the management team of Vincent and Gavin with the reins being taken over by former player Chris Boothe, who himself resigned at the end of the 2007-08 season. The club finished in seventh place in the Premier Division of the Molten Spartan South Midlands League in the 2008-09 season and in 12th place in the 2009-10 season.
In 1997/1998,their position of 12th in the League meant that in the first season of the Spartan South Midlands League in 1998/1999 that they would be required to play in the Senior Division. At the end of the 1997/1998 season Roy Nairn who had
There was a further change in the managerial team at the start of the 2010-11 season with Boysie Wise departing and Jason Tucker stepping into the role of assistant manager to the club’s leading goalscorer Keith Rowlands. After a very promising

start to the season, the side fell away drastically at the end of the season eventually finishing in fifteenth position. The club continued to struggle in the 2011-2012 season and mid-way through the season, the club reluctantly accepted the resignations of club stalwarts Rowlands and Tucker. They were replaced by a new managerial team of Tommy Williams and Luke Evans. Despite results improving, the club were unable to climb out of the relegation zone and faced relegation but the demise of clubs at level four saw them stay up. At the end of the season both Williams and Evans resigned their managerial roles and the club turned again to Ray Duffy to hold the managerial reins for the 2012-13 season finishng 6th. Season 2013-2014 turned out be the most successful in the club’s history as they won The Spartan South Midlands League by a margin of fourteen points over Ampthill Town. Promoted back to the Southern League Central Division, the 2014-15 season proved to be another very successful season for the club as playing at their highest ever level and they not only held their own but finished in seventh place. Unfortunately, club manager Ray Duffy tendered his resignation at the end of the season so the club started afresh in season 2015-2016 under the managerial reins of Phil Granville. However, things did not work out as expected and Granville was relieved of his duties at around Christmas and Duffy, fresh from his break, returned to take up the reins. It proved to be a stressful run in to the end of the season but he prevented the club from being relegated. With the management team having had the time to rebuild the squad over the close season, hopes are high that similar problems will not be experienced in this new season.

THE ACADEMY
ACADEMY MATTERS
Good evening and here’s wishing Tommy and the lads win tonight and progress to the next round of the Emirates FA Cup . Last Wednesday, our Academy boys played their first League match - away to Crystal Palace FA and were beaten 6-1, with Akinwale Akinsami netting our only goal of the game. Palace were a strong, organised team and our lads were four down at half time. It was great to see, after some words of advice from Gary Ryan and myself, the lads roll their sleeves up and put up a fighting performance which resulted with a “2-1 defeat” in the

second half. I would like to thank the parents for their help with transporting the players to the game and for their support. Both the players and the parents can now see the strength of the opposition in this league and the pace and power of the players our lads are up against. We have to remember, the majority of the teams in this league have all got lads that have been at professional academies; represented their district or County or played in the stronger Leagues within their area. We haven’t got this experience in
our squad, so it is a case of hard work and effort in the classroom for their educational needs. And even harder work on the training ground so we can compete against these stronger teams On this note, I’m delighted that our lads are doing this and more and both Gary and I are really enjoying working with these young players. Let’s see how far we can all get. Enjoy the game tonight. Yours in sport Ian Docker Academy Manager
