THE MEAD 08

> CONTENTS

ISSUE 08 Welcome

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to Bostik League South football after our FA Cup adventure came to an end on Tuesday…

Jake McIntyre; we remember the anniversary this week of the passing of a football legend and there’s the latest from the Gaffer and the Chairman’s office.

Today we welcome to Princes Park, the officials, players and supporters of Ramsgate – hopefully the Thanet Way and the M2/A2 corridor have been kind and your journey hasn’t been too bad this Saturday afternoon.

Don’t forget we make the short trip to play Phoenix Sports on Tuesday before we’re back here next weekend when we welcome Greenwich Borough from a 3:00pm kick off. See you then…

In today’s Mead, we’ve all the action from last Sunday’s titanic FA Cup battle with Billericay Town and we speak to one of the Mead’s battered defense as we go one on one with

Enjoy the game and safe trip home Greenie

PAUL BOWDEN-BROWN THE CHAIRMAN

May I extend a warm and friendly welcome to the officials, Lloyd Blackman – who is an old player of mine at MUFC – and his players and supporters of Ramsgate FC to Princes Park the club’s new home for the next five years, and after an enjoyable game and some refreshments they all have a safe journey home. Hopefully joining us this afternoon will be a very old friend of mine Mal Watkins, the father of the very capable Ramsgate goalkeeper Luke. Mal and I first met when I owned Maidstone United and he has, on numerous occasions, stood in and managed the team for me always on short notice when a manager has left. Mal and I have seen many things and been out with many groups of semi-professional players, we have many stories that we could keep you all interested, but today is all about the football of today – so a very warm welcome to you Mal! Well here we are back in league action after our short journey in the FA Cup this season that finished quite quickly and decisively at Billericay’s home ground on Tuesday evening with a 0-5 result against us. On the previous Sunday our biggest gate this season of 433 saw a great display of

PAGE 04

THAMESMEAD TOWN V RAMSGATE

determination and great skill by two teams. I was advised by many neutrals Sundays game was one of the best these individuals had seen for many seasons. At times, you could not see the supposed difference in the quality and type of player on the pitch; those stars within the Billericay squad put together by Glenn Tamplin – the new joint owner of Billericay with a number with Premier League experience players in it. I even understand one of them played a match in the Champions League who are muted to earn a weekly figure of £25,000 considerably greater than our own budget, and our own squad. It was well reported in numerous media outlets that we should have killed off the game on Sunday when we had numerous opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net, but as our record shows we have a record for missed

chances. But in the end, we managed to match the endeavours of the Billericay players and draw the very tight game against all of the odds, I was so proud of everyone within the club for what they had achieved on that Sunday afternoon, so a replay was arranged for the Tuesday. I use the word replay very quickly as on that Tuesday evening in my opinion, we were well beaten by a sharp, well organised team, full of determination to win, that we as a club had no answer too. All our players committed themselves throughout game, but I just thought there was Billericay bringing on substitutes costing thousands and Tommy bring on a seventeen-year-old! In my opinion, we played as well as we could – yes there was the incident of a missed penalty, and the offside goal - it would have sounded better 5-2 score line, but just look at the Bostic Premier

> THE CHAIRMAN

teams that have played Billericay score lines of 4-0, 5-0 and it goes on. Although I was very frustrated at the content of the match, reality must set in – we are a young team adjusting to change playing a team full of professionals that would hold their place in the Conference National in my opinion. Tommy would love to have a bench like theirs, but we do not; therefore, let’s get on with the job in front of us and ensure that our boys are supported for their efforts always. We must remember where we are and what we have achieved to date since Tommy joined us at Thamesmead Town. After the match, I was advised that Billericay are in three days a week, whilst our boys played Sunday then worked Monday and Tuesday and so no time for those niggles to mend; another innuendo of why

we could not contest their display. The quality of the two squads became very apparent during the game making our display and result on Sunday all that much harder to accept. After watching the match on Tuesday, I now know why they are sitting at the top of the Bostik Premier and why they are odds on favourites to be outright champions of that league at the end of the season. Therefore, I wish Glenn, his team and supporters the very best for everything that he wishes for the club. As I have said we must now forget the magic of the FA Cup – our involvement in this competition is over for another year – so let’s get back to our bread and butter business of the Bostik League South.

this year and I will leave Tommy and his management team to take the club forward, starting with the match this afternoon. I have during my previous ownership of Maidstone always enjoyed my trips to Ramsgate, indeed I once even employed the Wards (a very successfully Ramsgate duo Management team) as my own managers and I have always have had some great tussles against a very strong Ramsgate team. There have been management changes at both clubs, but I am sure this afternoons match will be a very tight game and although Thamesmead will throw down the gauntlet this afternoon and so, let’s all get behind Tommy and the boys for this game at Princes Park Enjoy the game. We know what we want to achieve and have budgeted accordingly

THE MANAGER <

TOMMY WARRILOW THE manager

Good afternoon everyone and a warm welcome to Lloyd, his players and all the officials and supporters who have made the trip from the Thanet coast to be here today… It’s back to reality today after our two big games with Billericay in the FA Cup – back to a league in which I’ve always said we will not have an easy game as anyone from top to bottom can turn up the pressure on anyone at any time. On that note, I believe just that against Billericay, but our cup run is now over for another season, but I do think we got the toughest draw ever and last Sunday we surprised everyone in football with what we achieved.

we will have earned as much money out of the run al-most as we would have done reaching the next round without facing Billericay. It was a massive ask for the lads to face two such titanic games in a little over two days – I knew it would be a massive ask of a small squad – let’s face it to reach the standards of Sunday would have been a big ask of anyone!

Those who didn’t see the game would have been surprised at the result, whilst a lot of those who were there were surprised that we didn’t win.

It’s a shame that we had to play the replay that quickly – I don’t know why we couldn’t have played Wednesday as after all when you have a fixture on Sunday in a cup competition should any replay not always be on the third day af-ter? Food for thought for the future perhaps…

I couldn’t be prouder of every single one of the lads – we did everything right but unfortunately on the day we just couldn’t kill off a very, very good side.

Make no mistake, the two games were a fantastic experience for many of my young players, and is great for many of them to learn from.

But we had the replay on Tuesday which of course was very good for the club financially, and hopefully

I think that they all stepped up against some real quality players – after all how many sides we

PAGE 06

THAMESMEAD TOWN V RAMSGATE

face this season will bring on a FA Cup winner as Billericay did on Tuesday. Irreverent of the result, I do think that we played some god football – we kept try-ing to play but they were very ruthless on the night and that’s the difference and the difference that money can get you. The boys I believe left with their heads held high and we must make sure that the lessons we learned – the attitude and the performances – are taken forward into our league games. I’ve learned a lot from it as a manager with the side that I’ve got – OB and I were talking the other day after two years – last year was all about getting to know a few people, but I think that this year we’ve a very, very good team on paper that has so far in my opinion not let us down as the minimum they’re doing is becoming a very difficult side to beat. There’s been a lot of growing up in the last few weeks for us and

> THE MANAGER

that is a massive positive for us all moving forward! We’re under no illusions what we face today. I’ve been to see Ramsgate play and we’ve treated them in our preparation as we do every single game that we play. It’s important that we continue to progress – for me we had a little dip in form in our last league game against Sittingbourne but we came away without losing a game of football to another side who have started the season very well. Obviously, one of the main difference in our preparation for today is that this game won’t get the same hype etc that our cup ties did.

We’ve hopefully maximised that for now regarding the help that we need off the pitch and it will be interesting to see if we can hopefully get someone coming forward to help. There was no way that I think we could have advertised everything to do with that game any more than we did do – we did interviews for radio, newspapers and television – bottom line is that we do need help down here. Today though is all about getting the three points and starting our league campaign all over again – we’ve been over there; we’ve seen it all; we’ve experienced it all and I think we’ve come away with a lot of credit!

And it’s not just me saying that as there were a lot of people in the bar after Tuesday who were very complimentary of us. So today is a massive three points – we were in Thursday night to get back to real-ity and we’ve got to work really hard again with winter looming large. Hopefully there’s a few of you reading this who enjoyed the game last Sunday and are here today – here’s to a good game and see you in the bar after the game! Cheers as always! LEON SMITH THE CAPTAIN

Hello everyone and welcome to Princes Park, where we take on Billericay Town in the FA Cup Wow – what a week that was! With a huge home crowd attending the game and on their home turf, it was always going to be difficult for us to bet Billericay in our last game, and I think our chance to go through in the end were in the first game here last weekend. Having said that, we weren’t at our best in the first half on Tuesday and took a while to settle down and play some football. We were much better in the second half only conceding one goal but of course sadly by then the damage had been done. So, our FA Cup run comes to an end and we need to pick ourselves up and come out today having enjoyed the experiences WWW.TTFCOFFICIAL.ORG

against and at Billericay and having taken away some positives – and there honestly are many – as well as some more areas for improvement. Your backing last weekend was brilliant and I hope that a few more of you have come this afternoon as our home crowd begins to and continues to grow. We all knew how tough it was going to be and I know that we surprised many, many people – and I hope that some of those have come back to see us this afternoon… Thank you for your continued support – you do make a difference! Enjoy the game! Leon Smith First-Team Captain

IAN DOCKER

THE Academy Hello, and here’s hoping for a successful season for Tom and the lads in our first year at Princes Park. Good afternoon to you all and as usual, let’s hope Tom and the boys pick up another three points today. Life at the academy continues and I’ve been delighted with the hard work and effort the scholars have been putting into their training, both as individuals and in the team work scenarios. Both Steve Quashie and myself, have been letting them know that being skilful or able to tackle, head or pass well is only a small part of progressing to the next level. Being competent in all of them is what’s needed and then comes the game management side, the tactical knowledge and the fitness levels. These have to be honed in and learnt for the lads to step up to Tom’s first team. On Wednesday, we played Dulwich Hamlet away and unfortunately went down 2-9. The lads did well in the first half and a fantastic free kick by

skipper Dante McIntosh spurred the lads on. Our passing was erratic at times but a combination of passes by Artan Fanaj, My-ron Dixon, and Dante McIntosh saw Zacharia Coulibaly slide the ball past the Dulwich keeper. Individual mistakes and slick passing by Dulwich saw them score too easily and even though the score was not good, the result did not do our lads justice as mentioned by Dulwich;s first team assistant manager – Junior Kadi – who took their team. Another lesson for our lads to take in, but again I saw some promising moments by individuals. So let’s hope we can learn from our mistakes when we take on Charlton Trust next week at Long Lane JFC in Kidbrooke, with a 1:00pm kick-off. Yours in sport

CLUB HISTORY

thamesmead town Thamesmead F.C. was formed in 1969 as a community team for local youngsters. The club merged with Southlake FC in 1973, and by 1979 were fielding a Saturday team, playing on local park pitches. In 1980 the club entered the London Spartan League at the Intermediate Division Three level and dominated the divisions in the early 80s, but were couldn’t gain promotion to the Senior Division until they gained senior status. In 1985, the club changed its name to Thamesmead Town FC, and later that year they relocated to Bayliss Avenue, before finally gaining senior status during the summer of 1987 and were accepted into the London Spartan League Premier Division. The club moved to the Kent League in June 1990, where they remained until 2008, generally finishing amongst the top half dozen in the table. In 2002–03, the club missed the runner-up spot on goal difference, despite bizarrely having more points than Cray Wanderers, who won the League! In 2007–08, Thamesmead Town were champions of the Kent League,

would be competing in the South Division.

The title ensured promotion to the Isthmian League, where they were elected to play in Division One North in 2008–09, before in 2012-13, the Mead finished 3rd in this division and beat Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final to gain promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time in their history.

In August 2017, the club enjoyed a record 8-0 win in the FA Cup (away to East Preston) which was not only the Clubs biggest ever win in the competition but was also the first time, we have won a competitive game by eight clear goals!

The club’s stay in the Premier Division lasted just one season, and the club endured two turbulent seasons before Tommy Warrilow was appointed manager in the summer of 2016. Pre-season began with a completely new-look squad yet it proved to be a historic season in the FA Cup, when the club were the first to play a tie in the Channel Islands before reaching the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in the club’s history. In March 2017, the club announced that they would be moving to play their home games at Princes Park Stadium, the home of neighbours Dartford FC, and in the close season, the newly named BOSTIK League confirmed that for the first time, the Mead

O’Connor (25)

Sunday 17th September Princes Park Attendance: 433 FA Cup Second Qualifying Round

Robinson (4)

The magic of the FA Cup was alive and well in the September sunshine at Princes Park as the width of the crossbar ultimately denied Thamesmead Town an historic Cup upset. In the end, it was a tie that had everything - two terrific goals; chances at both ends; heroic performances all over the pitch from those wearing green, and had Paul Vines been his usual predatory instincts fully in focus, the Mead could easily have caused one of the upsets of the round against a Billericay Town side who included Cup winner Jermaine Pennant, and who have received much recent publicity over their alleged weekly wage bill. But on this day, that mattered not a jot, as the Mead matched their illustrious opponents, despite going behind to Robinson’s missile in the first five minutes – the Billericay striker fired home an unstoppable drive that Lewis Carey in the Mead goal could only admire as it flew into the net via the underside of the bar. It was then Carey’s’ performance that was there to be admired as he pulled off a string of stunning saves - particularly before half time - as slowly, but surely the home side grew into the game, before the almost unthinkable happened after 25 minutes when the Mead levelled through Tom O’Connor’s great low strike – O’Connor reacted quickest on the edge of

the box to drill home after Vinesy slid the ball into his path superbly. The game turned the Mead’s way just past the half hour when the visitors were reduced to ten men when referee Green showed full back Josh Urquhart a straight red card for a horrendous kick out at Leon Smith. Both sides now clearly believed that they could win the game and the second 45 minutes saw chances come and go at both ends as the two sides slugged it out almost like heavyweight boxers. Carey was outstanding, but mention has to be made also of the performances of those in front of him with Smith and Simon Glover immense at the heart of the Mead defence and with O’Connor and Bode Anidugbe covering so much room in the middle of the park that really was

beyond belief. And it could have been so much better if Vines’ 72nd minute header not thundered to safety off the underside of Billericay’s cross bar. The visitors had the chance late on to win the game when Theophanous beat his man on the left and found the tireless Robinson, only to be denied by yet another brilliant save by Carey who went full-length to his left to make yet another incredible stop. Honours even then, and both sides came away from what was a pulsating cup-tie feeling frustrated, but as a well-respected Kent Bostik League manager was heard to comment after the game, “they (the Mead) should have won the game late on undoubtedly but the keeper (Carey) was Man of the Match by a mile”! by Mike Green

Robinson (6, 24, 29), Cunnington (33), Theophanous (52) Tuesday 19th September New Lodge Attendance: 774 FA Cup Second Qualifying Round Replay

0 THAMESMEAD TOWN The Mead’s FA Cup adventure for another season ended in Essex on Tuesday night, as Billericay Town showed just why they currently lead the BOSTIK Premier Division and are favourites to win promotion to the Vanarama National League South come May. As in Sunday’s first game, it was the Essex side who started better and exactly like Sunday, Robinson gave them the early lead. But unlike Sunday, when Mead keeper Lewis Carey repelled almost everything that was thrown at him, on this occasion, Billericay and in particular Robinson had his scoring boots on, as he completed a hat-trick in the opening 30 minutes (his 13th, 14th and 15th goals already) and with Cunnington adding a fourth before the break, the Mead were beaten. It wasn’t all one way traffic and at 0-3 down, the Mead had a “goal” disallowed for offside as Alex Teniola fired home from Paul Vines’ pass the flag, which was extremely late, was given against Vinesy - just one of a number of interesting first half decisions given against the Mead’s

number nine! Four down at the break, the Mead really were staring at a real hammering, but came out after the break with a resolve that enough was enough and they dug deeper and only conceded a single goal in the second period. Now some will say that the home side eased off the pace, but the bottom line is that the Mead “only” lost the second half by a single goal and indeed it could have been even better as home keeper Julian made two terrific

saves at either end of the half from Alex and Harvey Brand. The Mead’s best chance came in the final quarter, when Alex was hauled down in the box by Billericay skipper Swaine who was shown a straight red card - only for Alex to sadly blaze the penalty high into the Essex night sky. Defeated yes - but so many positives to take out of these two terrific ties for the Mead as they now prepare for a Kent derby with Ramsgate on Saturday.

INTRODUCING

RAMSGATE Ramsgate arrive at Princes Park this afternoon with just three points from their opening six matches and like the Mead looking to recover from a big FA Cup beating in Essex in the last week. Whilst the Mead lost by five at Billericay, Lloyd Blackman’s side conceded seven against National League South side Chelmsford City and will be looking to bounce back today just as the Mead are. Manager Blackman who’s just starting his first season in charge of the Southwood side

only took over in January after Jim and Danny Ward left the club for a third time. Blackman had been on the coaching staff at Hythe Town since 2012. With just Guernsey and the pointless Shoreham below them in the BOSTIK South table at kick off, the Rams will be looking to kick start their season sooner rather than later this afternoon on the ground where they won their last honour - the Isthmian League Cup in 2008. The two sides meet today for the first time since the Mead edged a 2015 FA Trophy tie by the only goal.

> THE OPPOSITION

RAMSGATE

Recent CLUB HISTORY Ramsgate has had senior football teams within the town since the late-1800s, but despite the paucity of reports in the local press there are match reports for Ramsgate Athletic from 1895. At this time matches were being played on a number of grounds around the town, including the Rams’ current home - Southwood. Football in east Kent closed down during the Great War, and in 1919 the Southwood ground was provided for Ramsgate Town, by then known simply as Ramsgate. In their first season they finished 3rd in the Kent League and reached the Kent Senior Cup final, but lost 1-0 to Northfleet at Maidstone before a crowd of 10,000. In 1924 Ramsgate Town folded and Ramsgate Grenville moved to Southwood and, apart from the appearance and demise a few years later of Ramsgate Press Wanderers in 1932, became the senior Ramsgate side until the 2nd World War again brought an end to all football in east Kent. Football resumed after the war and Southwood was taken over by the current club in 1945, then called Ramsgate Athletic. The Club played in the Kent League until it was disbanded in 1959, and were runners-up in the Kent Senior Shield in 1946/47, finalists in the Kent Senior Cup in 1947/48, Kent League Cup winners in 1948/49, followed by winning the League and runners-up in the Kent Senior Shield in 1949/50. In the next golden period, from 1954 to 1957, the Club won back-toback League Championships (1955/56 & 1956/57). In 1958/59 the Club also started playing in the Thames & Medway Combination League, winning the Eastern Division that season but finishing runners-up to Sittingbourne in the Champions’ Cup Final. With the demise of the KCFA Kent League in

1959, the Club joined the Southern League, as well as continuing in the Thames & Medway Combination. In 1971/72 they finished runnersup in the League and were promoted to the Premier Division. In 1972 the Club changed its name to Ramsgate but after a decline in fortunes off the pitch the Club were relegated to Division 1 and later resigned from League in 1976. The 1st team taking the Reserves’ place in the new Kent League and in 1988/89 won the Kent Senior Trophy for the 2nd consecutive year and finished runners-up in the Kent League Cup, whilst in 1998/99 the Club was eligible for promotion to the Southern League after winning the Kent Premier League championship, but decided the time was not right. The 2004/2005 season saw the Club capitalise on the promise of its successful youth and a tough pre-season programme had the Rams playing (and defeating) 4 sides from higher leagues, including old adversaries Margate. The best form was saved for the domestic season, where the Rams again did the double, the Kent League Premier Division Cup as well as the Kent League Championship by a clear margin, gaining promotion to the Isthmian League Division 1 South. Summer 2005 saw the Rams start the new era with two further pieces of silverware, beating Herne Bay in the Kent League Challenge Shield and Margate in the Kent Messenger Challenge Cup. The Club also won the League at the first attempt, securing back-toback promotions to the Isthmian Premier for 2006/2007. For most of their 1st season in the Premier Division the Rams were settled in the ‘play-off spots’ and spent several weeks in 2nd place, but the toll on the squad was noticeable and injuries saw their form dip in the last

weeks and they eventually slipped to 9th. This also meant a new record, as the Club had only managed to stay in the Southern League Premier for a single season. 2007/08 saw the Rams set more club records, winning the Isthmian League Cup and also reaching the play-offs for Conference South. For 2008//09 having lost key players an average performance on the pitch dipped in the last months with relegation to Division 1 South. This saw several players leave to remain playing at the higher level, and a much younger Ramsgate team in 2009/10 avoided a further drop as some had predicted. The Rams remained in the 1st Division for 2010/11 and a fine run of form in 2011 almost made up for the poor performances in the first half of 2010/11, with the Club challenging for a play-off place until the last week of the season, but in 2011/12 the form was again patchy with the Rams ending the season in the middle again, a pattern that has been repeated in almost every season since. In 2013 the Rams looked to bring the development of their younger players to fruition, however the 1st team has had an unsettled couple of seasons with five changes of management. 2015/16 saw the return of Jim and Danny Ward for their third spell at Ramsgate, but although the Rams were in 2nd spot at Christmas by the end of the season and they had slipped out of the play-off zone. The Rams started strongly again in 2016/17, but by New Year were in the bottom quarter, resulting in the dismissal of the Ward brothers with the Rams continuing with Head Coach Lloyd Blackman in charge, and a reversal of fortunes saw the season conclude with a 10-match unbeaten run and a mid-table finish.

PLAYER INTERVIEW <

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

JAKE MCINTYRE This afternoon’s player feature is with a local who has returned “home” to play for the Mead this season. He’s made an impression at left-back since start of the season – Greenie this week has been talking to JAKE McINTYRE…

> PLAYER INTERVIEW

We started by asking how Dartford resident Jake finished up playing at Princes: “It’s nice to be back at Princes Park,” he admitted. “It’s such a great facility which in my opinion is probably the best in the league. I have to admit, though, that it isn’t really much of a change for me, as I spent three years playing here from the age of sixteen to nineteen years old in the academy. “From there I played down the road at Phoenix Sports, before a spell with Erith and Belvedere before moving to my last club which was East Grinstead Town.” So why the Mead we wondered? “I’m best mates with Jay Porter (who moved from the Mead in the summer to play for AFC Hornchurch) and he said to me Tom and OB were really good to play under. So when I decided to leave East Grinstead, I got in contact and came down for preseason and here we are.” Football is a long way from Jake’s day-job as he told us: “I work in London for SIEMENS working in the railway industry,” when he was asked – exactly what role that is something for another day!

out the league. Last weekend was a special one for everyone at the club, but we wanted to know the players took from it; Jake told us: “We know we have got it in us to produce these kind of performances as you’ve seen in the league and cups also, the mood in the changing room is always good and we always believe when we step over the white line we can give any team a game. “It’s good to test yourself against ex pros and of course let’s not forget FA Cup winners such as Jermaine Pennant to see where you are. “It’s good for the boys to play in front of big crowds as everyone enjoys it. The boys are ok we will keep our heads up and go again straight away today (Saturday) and concentrate on trying to get

“We can go all the way if we believe in ourselves and turn in the kind of performances we are capable of consistently.” Finally, our “Five First’s” as we ask everyone the same five questions… First football kit bought (either for you or by you)? Chelsea shirt with Vialli 9. First album/CD owned? Eminem. First football match attended? Chelsea vs Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. First car owned? Renault Clio First foreign holiday? Alicante in Spain.

CRAIG’S CORNER <

CRAIG GIBSON THE coach

Welcome to Princes Park our new home - Jamie and Greenie have finally let me write some words for the programme, so here goes! Well the FA Cup journey is over for another season.

seen us pull off the shock of the round.

And there was me dreaming of a first round tie versus a football league club – Exeter City at the home of football for me for sure! Oh well, maybe next year?

We got the worst start we could have asked for and I guess most people in the ground thought that was just the start!

Last Sunday was a great occasion for all Involved at Thamesmead Town and I think the lads did us all proud with a stirring performance which on another day would have

PAGE 28

THAMESMEAD TOWN V RAMSGATE

Well it was – just the start of the Thamesmead onslaught! I thought our boy’s in green grew into the game and you could see the confidence seep through the side as we played some very attractive football at times.

The sending off could have galvanised them as is often the case when sides are reduced to 10 men, but we did not let this happen and gained a deserved equaliser through the impressive Tom after a nice lay off by Vinesy. After we weathered the early second-half storm & we again grew into the game, so much so that for a period midway through the second half we were almost unplayable with

Ellis Green outstanding wide right, which prompted Billericay to change their formation to try and counter this threat.

> CRAIG’S CORNER

Overall a draw was probably a fair result on the day, I am sure as neutral this was a tremendous advert for the FA Cup as the game swung from end to end in what became a titanic battle between two sides determined to continue their journey in this fabulous old competition. So, to Tuesday’s replay in the hope we could pull off a victory in their own back yard - but as is often the case, it was not to be as they really punished us early in the game to seal their place in the next round. But we should look at both games and NO ONE can be too disappointed – we lost a game of football against a very professional and strong outfit; we did not roll over; we showed a togetherness & spirit, not too little skill, which if carried over to the league can stand us in good stead for the weeks ahead. Today, its Ramsgate here at Princes Park. We’re already games a lot of the division, so it’s Important we keep adding points and bounce back. Here’s to a good performance, a few goals and three points. Cheers. Craig Gibson First-team coach

NON-LEAGUE DAY <

NON-LEAGUE DAY By Matt Badcock

NON-LEAGUE Day is fastapproaching – amazingly when it comes around on Saturday, October 7 it will be the eighth edition. It’s a mainstay of the football calendar. Creator James Doe deserves a huge amount of credit for coming up with the idea in 2010 after a trip to a Non-League ground opened his eyes to football outside the bubble. Since then, an army of volunteers have helped drive it each year and many clubs up and down the country have come up with wonderful ideas to capitalise on the celebration. Pay what you want, fancy dress, even ferret racing – it never ceases to surprise what clubs put on to lure in the fans. Of course, if you’re reading this

there’s every chance we are preaching to the converted. You probably already know what makes Non-League so special. And for fans of recently relegated Football League clubs still coming to terms with the level they’re at, hopefully you are finding at least some aspects of life outside the EFL refreshing. But NLD is a great chance to bend the ear of a family member or a mate who hasn’t experienced football from the National League down. For most of us the, the bug bites quickly. With escalating ticket, food and merchandise prices at the top end of the game, increasing subscription packages and a general apathy towards the amount of money being spent at the top end, it’s

a real opportunity for people to rediscover their love for football. Get them down, park outside the ground, have a decent pint before, enjoy a cup of tea in a real mug at a Step 5 ground, go home with change in the pocket. Show them they can get value for money. If everyone manages to bring someone new to a game on NLD then imagine what that could lead to. More and more clubs seem to be slipping off the radar. More grounds are being bulldozed to make way for housing. The Non-League community needs to really shout about itself. The so-called mainstream media will hopefully point their spotlight on NLD. Let’s show them why we love this corner of the Pyramid so much.

WATCH OUT IN NEXT SATURDAY’S EDITION OF THE MEAD (FOR OUR HOME GAME WITH GREENWICH BOROUGH) FOR FULL DETAILS OF WHAT WE’LL BE DOING ON SUNDAY 8TH OCTOBER AT OUR HOME BUILDBASE FA TROPHY TIE WITH AFC HORNCHURCH...
