THE MANAGER
THE MANAGER
STEVE HOUSHAM May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Tamworth to the Eon Visual Media Stadium this afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome back and since my last notes we had a busy Bank Holiday programme. First of all we took on Darlington, who I thought was the best side we have played in the first half. I thought it was a dominant display by Darlington and we were lucky to find ourselves just 1-0 down at the break. We managed to get the players in and organise them and in the second half we worked ever so hard and got the rewards with a good hard-working display to get a point against a very good side. A special mention to our keeper Ross Durrant, who during the game, pulled of some fantastic saves. We then went to my old club Gainsborough Trinity on the Monday, it was nice going back, but it was a game we needed to get something out of. But we came away with nothing, it was a scrappy game involving two teams, who looked nervous, but we came unstuck by two quality set pieces, which I feel we should have defended better. It’s something we need to cut out and we need to work on the quality of our own set pieces, too. We have picked up a couple of injuries in Russ Fry (hamstring) and our skipper Stephen
Brogan (groin). Two experienced players and the length of time out is unknown at the moment. Today we have another tough test against Tamworth but, as always, I ask you to get behind this young group and we will do our best to compete and get a positive result. Finally it was great to see the fanzine VFTAE selling out their programmes. Keep up the good work and support for your club. Up the Villagers! THE CAPTAIN
THE CAPTAIN Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Tamworth in the National League North. A warm welcome back to the Eon Visual Media Stadium after the Bank Holiday schedule as we take on Tamworth this afternoon. Our last home game saw us take on Darlington and I thought in the first-half Darlington were very good and we struggled to match them. We could have gone in two or three goals down, but in the second-half, after a talking too from Housh at half-time, the lads were fantastic. They got the point and could of easily got all three. To come to Gainsborough on the back of our two last results, confidence was high, but getting done with two set pieces ended up being the difference and that’s hard to take. Having 2 games in 3 days can’t be an excuse as it’s the same for every team. Tamworth up next is again going to be a tough game, especially with how they are doing so far, but we know we can compete with anyone in this league on our day, so we’ve just got to make sure we’re ready and I fancy us to pick the needed three points. I want to say thanks to the fans for the support so far this season, we really do appreciate it, we just need you to stick with us and hopefully start climbing that table with a few positive results. TAMWORTH
Tamworth are next up at the Eon Visual Media Stadium looking to extend their good start to the season. The club sit seventh in the table after four wins and three draws from their opening seven matches. Andy Morrell’s men have beaten Leamington, Boston United and Stockport County, but lost to Bradford Park Avenue, Blyth Spartans and Harrogate Town. Following the defeat away at Harrogate on Saturday, The Lambs returned home to take on the Hatters of Stockport County. County opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute, but Tamorth struck back
via Bobby Reid’s goal. They struggled to break Stockport down and it wasn’t until the 76th minute when they finally got the breakthrough with Reece Styche netting. The game was wrapped up when Tamworth were awarded a penalty which Styche stepped up to score his second and Tamworth’s third of the day and crown a 3-1 victory. For North Ferriby, they took a point from the Bank Holiday schedule, with a 1-1 draw against Darlington, before falling to a 2-0 defeat away at manager Steve Housham’s old side Gainsborough Trinity. TAMWORTH
RECENT HISTORY
Over four score years ago, in the summer of 1933, a football team in Tamworth was just a dream for the lovers of the beautiful game who worked to set up a new club in the town. The original ground on which the team played was next to the now demolished Jolly Sailor pub, and from 1934 onwards The Lamb became the club’s new home, where they remain to this day. The club played its early football in the Birmingham Combination, switching to the Birmingham League in the 1950s, but it wasn’t until the 1960s that the club achieved notable success with two league championships and numerous victories in the League Cup, Birmingham Senior Cup and Staffordshire Cup. These were good times indeed for Tamworth FC, but it wasn’t to last. Despite gaining entry to the Southern League in 1972, the club’s fortunes went on a dramatic slide as the 1970s proved to be as cruel as the 1960s had been kind. Attendances fell to record low levels, The Lamb fell into disrepair and it became a effort just to keep the club alive. The club returned to the West Midlands League and gradually found their feet, eventually winning the Championship in 1988 and regaining their Southern League status after a four years hiatus. The following season Tamworth progressed to even greater things reaching the final of the FA Vase, and, on May 6th 1989 in front of a Wembley crowd of 26,487, they played out a 1-1 draw with Sudbury Town and won the replay at Peterborough four days later 3-0 to give the club, and the town, possibly its finest moment. The Vase triumph did not crystalise into further success though and manager Graham Smith left the club two years later while four managers in four seasons failed to springboard the club until February 1995 when Paul Hendrie with instant results. He turned another mediocre season around and guided the Lambs to within a point of promotion then secured the 1996/97 Southern League Midland
Division Championship by a 26 point margin. The next boost came in January 2001, when Gary Mills was appointed manager and with the club staring relegation squarely in the face his impact was almost as instant as Smith’s. Firstly he guided the side away from the drop, and then masterminded a Championship challenge in the 2001/02 season, which ended in heartbreaking fashion on the final day at Folkestone. Mills left Tamworth, and the club appointed assistant Darron Gee into the hot seat. Gee and the club as a whole started the 2002/03 campaign with a renewed sense of purpose and were rewarded with the Southern League Champions with 3 weeks left of the season. Lack of progress in the league saw ‘Coops’ leave and Mills return soon after and promotion to Conference National was achieved with a game to spare in 2008-09. When Mills departed Des Lyttle, took hold of the reins, but with relegation a distinct possibility stepped down with four games to go and the then academy coaches including Vase winner Dale Belford stepped up to help and it went to the wire but a nervy televised victory ensured survival with 14 minutes of the season remaining. In early January 2013 assistant Dale Belford was asked to step in as caretaker manager once again and rescue the club from the drop with the highest ever top flight points haul. Belford continued as permanent boss into the 2013-14 season, although the side was ultimately relegated from the Conference Premier so the successful former Wrexham player manager Andy Morrell and assistant Mike Fowler came to the club and have re-energised The Lamb ever since. A 12-game winning run was enjoyed whilst narrowly missing out on the play-offs in the process and the whilst building their vision off the field, the side once again narrowly missed out on the play-offs in 2015-16. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED

Monday 28 August 2017 | Northolme | Att: 737 Ferriby were second-best in a game between two poor sides. Unless The Villagers can turn-round things quickly it is going to be a long hard season. The Villagers were unable to take their second-half display against Darlington in to the first-half at Gainsborough and this cost them dear. As on Saturday, Ferriby were pulled apart too often on their right-hand side with Craig King leading the way for Gainsborough. Ferriby were shot-shy in the first-half and it was not until the 42nd minute that they had an attempt on goal when Bobby Johnson’s shot was blocked. Both sides looked extremely anxious in the opening 15 minutes with no player really looking to hold on to the ball. Ferriby played too many long balls out from the back that were usually returned very quickly. Gainsborough started to play a little more creative football and took a degree of control. Once again, Ferriby were grateful to keeper Ross Durrant who made two excellent saves to deny Nathan Jarman and then Jonathan Wafula whose shot he blocked from point-blank range. Trinity had gone ahead in between those two efforts. A free-kick from King went beyond the far post where Michael Jacklin had a freeheader and he needed no second chance to power home the ball. If that was disappointing goal to concede then worse was to follow. Another King freekick found former Ferriby player Jarman and it was his turn to head home a minute before half-time. That left Ferriby with a mountain to 12
NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme
climb in the second-half. The introduction of Callum Rzonca and Leigh Hutchinson at half-time saw Ferriby up their tempo and they finally begin to mount some positive attacks with the ball played on the floor. Alberto Seidi saw a shot blocked and then home keeper Henrich Ravas came out to block the striker following a good move. Mark Gray headed wide from a Johnson corner. Twice in two minutes, Rzonca cut in from the right to draw two saves from Ravas. Ten minutes from the end, Gray powered another Johnson corner just wide. Trinity did not manage one serious attempt on goal in the second-half as Ferriby put them under some pressure but they had done enough in the first-half to deserve the points. There was always the feeling that had The Villagers pulled one back then they were more than likely to get a second but it was not to be. Once again, Ferriby were let-down by a poor first-half and they paid the inevitable price. It goes without saying that Ferriby manager Steve Housham was unhappy about the result on his return to his former club. “They were the better of two poor teams. They were a little more creative than us in the first-half when we never really got going. “It was disappointing to concede both goals to set-pieces. We work hard with the players on these and they have to be wiser in defence. “Their front two were better than our front two and that made a difference. We can’t afford to giving sides a start and we’ve got to start creating and taking chances.”

VIEW FROM THE STANDS
VIEW FROM THE STANDS by Sam Shepherd Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium where today we take on Tamworth. It’s set to be another tough clash for us this afternoon with our visitors currently occupying a play-off place. They have won three of their past four games and have been scoring a fair few goals so our defence will have to be on their guard today. It was a mixed Bank Holiday weekend for us. We started with a gritty display against Darlington which saw us pick up a valuable point here at the EVM. Darlo are one of the best teams in the league and Steve Housham would have been delighted with the resilient display his players served up which saw them come from behind to get a point. I’m delighted for Curtis Bateson who scored the equaliser. He has had injury problems, but he can be a very dangerous player on his day and to see him back amongst the goals is very pleasing. Sadly that was as good as it got for Ferriby as they dished up a below par performance at Gainsborough on Monday. Housh will have been looking for a positive result at his old stomping ground, but we never got going and conceded two soft set piece goals. We lacked cohesion going forward and that

certainly seems to be our biggest problem so far this season. We have to start scoring more goals and quickly! I have no doubt Housh and his attacking players will be working hard to solve the problem and it will click eventually, but we need to start picking up some more positive results. Hopefully we play like we did against Darlington today and if we do then another win could be on the cards. We are in the bottom three, but it’s still early days and hopefully if we start bagging some more goals we will climb the table. One player deserves a special mention for his start to the season and that’s Ross Durrant. The young keeper looks to be our more valuable acquisition of the summer and has played extremely well for us so far. He has kept us in a few games with some excellent saves. We have had some great goalkeepers in recent years and the early signs indicate Durrant will be right up there with the likes of Adam Nicklin and Rory Watson. Keep it us Ross! Good luck to both sides today especially Ferriby lets have another three points lads! Sam Shepherd North Ferriby United Supporter
