THE BOARDROOM

PAUL

BOWDENBROWN

I welcome the officials, team and all the loyal supporters new and old of Maidstone United football club. Unfortunately, l am writing these notes lying in my bed at the KIMS Medical Hospital in Maidstone after a difficult spinal operation last Thursday GUY FAWKES NIGHT.

as the club was a great part of my life for over a quarter of a century it still hurts me not being able to feel the experience but everyone is welcome at our match tonight with no restrictions.

It would be very inappropriate and discourteous of me not to apologise personally for not being at the game tonight to be able to meet and greet some of the many of those great old and loyal supporters that may have made the short journey to Bayliss Avenue this Monday evening. Some being those that had followed me around the County with others at games and at times far beyond in those early rebuilding times for the club after I took over the club in 1992 as Chairman.

It may be a cup match tonight being played but be assured our squad would have been advised by Terry our manager to treat it very seriously as our opponents certainly will, I do not know what squad Jay will put on the pitch tonight especially after yesterday’s tie with Yeovil in the FA Cup, but he has many choices from his very experience and highly successful first-team squad also including their very successful academy squad they have accumulated this season. So it will certainly be a very competitive match whatever team is put out and as long as it is played to the aims of the game - I can ask for no more.

None of us were to know at that time the journey was to last over 18 years with its ups and downs thankfully more ups with the associated successes who became more than just supporters to me but true long-time friends, and I still get an occasional peep of a car horn or we meet up away from the ground for a pint whilst at other footballing events. Although due to the current Directors decision to ban me for life from watching my beloved team at the ground that I found with the help of a very good friend of mine on the Council and also then raised personally the funding to buy the ground from the DOE, gain full planning permission to build the ground though I was not able to take it that one very important stage further and actually build the ground! My only regret I have with my association with the club, but

We are only just getting a few of our own long term injured players back on the park that we have greatly missed, although ALL the players in my opinion that have had the opportunity to be involved due to our injury problems, have stepped up to the challenge without doubt! So I hope we will be able to put out our strongest squad out next Saturday without further injuries to level the odds as we have a very winnable FA Trophy match against Enfield Town, who play in the Ryman Premier. The Club deserve a cup run and Terry Spillane is of that pedigree to just achieve such a run hopefully it will be possible this season to match the tremendous start we have made in the League.

Everyone involved with the club and all its new supporters deserve the excitement and buzz there is around the place at this time! And for those that like purchasing away merchandise just go and see Greenie who “should” be in the boardroom at the tanoy as we have a great selection on sale this season. We have now put Sky Sports through our academy projector in the Mead Bar together with the fine food and ales all served by our smiling staff - all for the benefit of home and visiting supporters - I think now we have made the Mead Bar a very welcome and warm addition to the welcome we give to all visiting supporters. Ian Docker, my new academy manager, has now stamped his authority on this new challenge for the football club. When I decided to take over the running of the existing academy from our landlords Peabody, I had no idea what I had taken on. All I knew was that I wanted the Academy under the umbrella of the football club and it had to become an integral part of the players pathway. I thought with the partnership with the education supplier SCL, all would be easy! Well we all know now what they did! Anyway we have 38 students spread over two years and I am now advised things are looking promising and we are now preparing for the next input in August. Enjoy the game and safe journey home. MATTERS

WELCOME TO THE “NEW BOYS”!

Over the last week or so, Terry has strengthened the first team squad with three new players - with the first one needing no introduction as LESLEY THOMPSON returns to the SCT after a spell at Thurrock. Lesley was formerly a Mead player after being on loan here previously from Bromley. We’re also delighted to confirm that we’ve now received international clearance for ex Hendon midfielder JOSE FIGURA who has signed for us after a spell playing in Iceland. And last but by no means least its welcome to striker PAUL VINES who joins us from VCD Athletic. The Mead will Paul’s 10th club in an illustrious non league career and we hope that he’s saved some of his legendary strikes for the Mead... Welcome guys and we hope you all soon feel part of the Mead family...

GET WELL SOON PBB One person missing from the SCT this evening will be the club’s owner and chairman PAUL BOWDEN BROWN, who is currently recovering in hospital after very serious back surgery! As you’ll read elsewhere, PBB will be back at the helm as soon as he can although he has been advised by the doctors to take things easy for the next few weeks... 04

Full details will be announced nearer the time...

AND FINALLY LEST WE FORGET Before kick off tonight, there will be a minutes silence in respect of REMEMBRANCE DAY this coming Wednesday and representatives of both clubs will lay poppy wreaths on the match ball in a mark of both clubs respect for our fallen heroes - lest we forget!
