THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

STEVE HOUSHAM May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Chorley to the Eon Visual Media Stadium this afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Hi and welcome back to another home game here at the Eon Visual Media Stadium. We have had two games since my last programme notes, but have only managed the one point. That said I can’t fault the commitment of the group of players we have got. Sometimes the quality and mistakes let us down, but the players, as we demand, will keep fighting in this tough league and it showed in our last home game against Tamworth. We started slowly, but gradually we got into the game and earnt another big point. We then travelled to Boston United on Tuesday night and yet again the workrate and commitment was there. We were putting bodies on the line and came in half time 1-0 up, but we then got punished by our first mistake of the game. The lads heads dropped for a bit, but then we composed ourselves and started to get back in the game. There were chances for both teams, but in the 91st minute, another lapse in concentration cost us a point. It was very hard to take especially as Boston was down to 10 men, but we have to pick ourselves up from that heartbreak and go again today in which is going to be another tough test against Chorley. They had a slow start to the season, but have recently picked up some good form and results, so we have to be ready and prepared. On the injury front it’s not good news for Danny Emerton, who had a scan on a knee and will be out

for some time, but on the flip side Stephen Brogan and Russ Fry are nearly there, so hopefully it will not be too long before they are back in contention. A massive thanks to the fans who came on Tuesday night, as a group, we must stick together and stay strong and keep supporting your club and the players, we will do our best to change our fortunes. Up the Villagers! Steve Housham First-Team Manager NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

THE CAPTAIN

THE CAPTAIN Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Chorley in the National League North. Since these last notes, we first took on Tamworth and we earned a good point, which could of easily been three, too. Especially in the second half, we got on top of the game, but just couldn’t find that goal. Having said that, they had their chances as well and right at the end Ross Durrant made a great save followed up by Bobby Johnson’s block. It was great to see the lads giving everything! Then on to Boston United which was so hard to watch from the stands, we looked good and, after the red card, there looked like only team would go on and win it. So to get stung with nearly the last kick of the game like that was a big blow. But that shouldn’t be happening against 10 men and words were rightly said in the dressing room afterwards! I’ve hurt my groin at the minute which is frustrating as I want to be out there with the lads and doing my bit, especially as captain, but I have to make sure it’s right which hopefully won’t be too long. Although that Boston result is hard to take, the work rate and commitment of the team has been there to see for the last three or four games and so the confidence will still be there for our next game with Chorley and we have to believe the three points is going to be ours especially at home. Again to the fans we thank you for your support it’s much appreciated. Stephen Brogan First-Team Captain 4

CHORLEY

The games are coming thick and fast for North Ferriby United and next up is Chorley at the Eon Visual Media Stadium. The Magpies are enjoying their best run of form having not lost in their past four games and have amassed 12 points from their opening nine games. Chorley beating York City 2-0 last weekend, with Josh Wilson bagging both goals as the Magpies produced a terrific display to secure their first home victory of the season, as York City wilted under the pressure at Victory Park. A superb 4-1 midweek win against Darlington followed and saw the club climb

to 13th in the table. On another day, four goals would be considered a good return, but even the staunchest of Darlo followers couldn’t have complained if the Magpies had at least doubled their tally. Jason Walker grabbed his first goals of the season, with right back Matt Challoner weighing in with his first of the campaign to put Chorley in command. Sub Harvey Saunders pulled one back for the visitors, but Matt Jansen’s side wouldn’t be denied as loanee Nick Haughton scored his first for the club to secure a second home win in three days. THE OPPOSITION

CHORLEY

A BRIEF HISTORY The appointment of former Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers captain Garry Flitcroft as manager in May 2010 heralded a massive upturn in fortunes for Chorley Football Club who for many years been drifting through many seasons of mediocrity. Since the heady days of Conference football between 1988 and 1990, Chorley FC had drifted down the divisions with little success to cheer the dwindling number of supporters along the way. In Garry’s first season in charge the club lead the First Division North for the opening months, before finishing in third place. The play-offs themselves saw astonishing crowds flock to Victory Park with 1,515 witnessing the semi-final 2-1 victory over Curzon Ashton then 2,950 turned up to see the Magpies defeat Fylde 2-0 in the final. The following season in the Northern Premier League Premier Division the Magpies were again contenders and again finished third in the league table, qualifying for the end of season play-offs. But this time there was to be no promotion as FC United of Manchester won the semi-final tie at Victory Park two-nil. The club’s origins were in Rugby Union, but after eight seasons of the oval ball game the club converted to association football in 1883, and it was also around this time that the club adopted its famous black and white colours. After a series of friendly matches against clubs like Wigan, Preston North End and Blackburn Rovers in the 1880s, Chorley joined the Lancashire Junior League in 1889 and has since competed in the Lancashire Alliance, the Lancashire Combination, the Cheshire County League, the Northern Premier League and the GM Vauxhall Conference, one step away from the Football League. The first title honour saw the club win the Alliance in 1892-93 and they have lifted league titles at fairly regular intervals ever since, including 11 Combination titles, two Lancashire League championships and one NPL title win, along with a competition record 14 Lancashire FA Trophy (formerly known as the Lancashire Junior Cup) successes. Victory Park has been the home of the Magpies since 1920, with the ground being named to commemorate the end of the First World War. Prior to 1920 the club had a relatively nomadic start to life having had three previous home; Dole Lane, Rangletts Recreation Ground and St George’s Park. The club enjoyed great success between 1958 and

1965, winning the county’s league title three times, finishing runners-up three times as well, and lifting the Junior Cup five times from their six appearances in the final. In 1968 the Magpies became one of the founder members of the Northern Premier League and the club has competed in this competition for the majority of the seasons ever since, with the exception of one season in the Lancashire Combination, nine in the Cheshire League and two in the Conference. The mid-to-late 1980s were undoubtedly the club’s most successful period on the larger stage, with promotion to the Football Conference and repeated appearances in the FA Cup ‘proper’. The club only remained in the Conference for two seasons before dropping back to the NPL in 1990, then down into the First Division in 1998-99. In 2002/03 the club came close to regaining Premier Division status, but lost out on penalties to Radcliffe Borough in the play-off final. The Magpies have tasted glory down the years in the FA Cup and the FA Trophy. They knocked out Wolves, twice post-war Wembley winners, 3-0 in the First Round second replay at Burnden Park, Bolton, in 1986-87. In the Second Round they drew 0-0 with Preston North End at Ewood Park, Blackburn, before going out 5-0 on Deepdale’s artificial pitch before a crowd of 16,308. In that last season they reached the Second Round with a 2-1 home win over Bury before going out 1-0 at Shrewsbury. The club’s best season in the FA Trophy was 1995-96, when they reached the semi-finals, losing over two legs to eventual winners Macclesfield Town. They reached the Trophy quarter-finals in 1976-77, going out in an away replay to Dagenham Town, who went on to Wembley. The Magpies had knocked out non-league giants Wimbledon 2-0 in a Second Round second replay at neutral Walsall a few weeks before the Dons were elected to the Football League. The first replay, at Victory Park, attracted Chorley’s highest Trophy attendance of 6,310. Over the years many Chorley players have progressed to the Football League, including two who went on to play for England, winger Arthur Cunliffe and striker Paul Mariner. Mariner played in the 1982 World Cup finals and helped Ipswich Town to FA Cup and UEFA Cup glory. Former Chorley forward Teddy Hodgson was in Burnley’s 1914 FA Cup-winning side only to lose his life in WW1.

JAKE COTTRELL

JOSH O’KEEFE

A proper leader on the pitch, Andy has played a massive role in helping Chorley rise from Evo-Stik Division One North to becoming challengers in the National League North. A six foot plus, strong centre half, he joined the Magpies in January 2011 for a nominal fee and was soon appointed as captain.

Joined the Magpies from FC United in the summer of 2013. Jake played a key role in the Magpies Evo-Stik Premier Division title success during 2013-14, but the following season suffered a facial injury which resulted in him missing a long spell. He fought he was back in 2015-16 though.

O’Keefe signed for the Magpies in the summer of 2016. Has played for a variety of clubs such as Walsall, Lincoln, Southport, Hereford, Kidderminster, Telford United, and Chester. In May 2015 he signed for Altrincham before making the move to Victory Park.

TERRY GORNELL Terry was signed by Matt Jansen in the summer of 2017 following his release by League Two side Accrington Stanley. The 27-year-old frontman brings a wealth of Football League experience to Victory Park, having played for Rochdale, Shrewsbury and Cheltenham.

JOSH WILSON

MARCUS CARVER

Josh joined us on a free transfer in the summer of 2017 after his release by AFC Telford United. He netted 16 goals in all competitions for the Shropshire side last season and was Matt Jansen’s first signing of the summer in 2017. Josh counts FC Halifax, AFC Fylde and Guiseley as a number of former clubs.

Marcus signed for the club on a permanent basis in 2016, following a successful three-month loan spell earlier in the previous season. He made eleven starts and eight substitute appearances in black and white, netting twice, before returning to The Wham Stadium during 2015-16. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

MAN OF THE

TAMWORTH

0

MATCH Ross DURRANT

Saturday 2 September 2017 | Eon Visual Media Stadium | Att: 261 This was much better performance from The Villagers. A point and a clean-sheet will do the team’s confidence good. The players worked hard for the full 90 minutes against one of the better sides in the division and they certainly deserved the point. Leigh Hutchinson and Callum Rzonca were given an opportunity to start the game and they caused problems for Tamworth throughout. This meant, that for once, the Villagers were able to put their opponents on the back foot. Scoring remains an issue, but now that chances are being created it should only be a matter of time before goals come. In a fairly mundane first-half, there was little to truly excite the crowd. Tamworth had the better of the half. They were quicker to the ball and often stronger in the tackle. Tamworth were the more dangerous going forward, but did not have an end product. Darryl Knights, Jack Lane and Reece Styche all had off-target shots. Mark Gray did well to block a Knights shot and Lane headed narrowly wide from a corner. It actually took until the 42nd minute, before Ferriby keeper Ross Durrant had to make the only save of the half when he parried a Matt Curley shot. Ferriby’s attacks were dealt with fairly comfortably by Tamworth’s defence and visiting keeper Shaun Rowley did not have a save to make in either half. The game finally sprung to life in the secondhalf. Ferriby started positively with Hutchinson going close with a header from a corner and Rzonca shooting wide from 18 yards. It is good to see that Rzonca is willing to take shots as it is part 12

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

of Ferriby’s game that is lacking. Kyle Dixon and Bobby Johnson both had offtarget efforts, before Tamworth got themselves back in to the game. Kyle Dixon cleared a Styche cross-cum-shot from just in front of the line. Durrant then did well to block a shot from Brad Reid as he broke through. Knights fired just over when well-placed and the striker should really have won after 87 minutes. He broke clear but Durrant blocked his shot. The ball fell at Knights’ feet and his goalbound shot was sensationally blocked by Bobby Johnson who had run at least 60 yards to get back to cover. Tamworth may feel they did enough to win, but the game is as much about defending as it is about scoring. Ferriby certainly defended well and they did look better going forward. Manager Steve Housham was much more upbeat than he has been recently, “It was a hard workmanlike performance. Our quality in the final third is what let us down in the end. We had great desire going forward and defensively in the second-half. “ I thought we’d lost it [the game] near the end, but Ross made a great save then Bobby Johnson somehow managed to make along run to get back and block the follow-up shot. That just typified the spirit the boys showed. “We have to be positive we have lost only one of the last four games and we got a point today from a top-seven side. “The results will come with performances like this and hopefully that will also bring in the fans.”

VIEW FROM THE STANDS

VIEW FROM THE STANDS by Sam Shepherd Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium where today we take on Chorley. Ferriby will be looking to build on their last home game where they drew 0-0 with Tamworth. It was a solid display from Ferriby, but we again lacked a clinical edge in a game with few chances. The visitors had the best of the chances, but Ferriby defended resolutely throughout and never really looked like losing. Steve Housham will want to see his side turn some of these solid performances into wins though and quickly. Fast forward to Tuesday night and Ferriby suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of their fierce rivals Boston United. The Villagers have had some great battles with The Pilgrims over the years and they certainly don’t like us, so it would have been great to go there and win. The game started well for Ferriby with Joe Pugh scoring the opening goal in the first half. It was their only real chance of the half, so Steve Housham will have been delighted to see his team leading at half-time. Despite going down to 10 men in a bad tempered second half Boston equalised and eventually stole the three points. The winning goal came deep into stoppagetime to the delight of the home faithful. In contrast it was a hammer blow for Ferriby who had come so close to another morale boosting

draw at one of their toughest away games of the season. Boston is never an easy place to go, especially for Ferriby, so hopefully the players will take some positives from the game despite the result. Ferriby are still bottom of the table with only 5 points to their name, but luckily they are only two points from safety. It’s early days yet and nothing is decided yet, but Ferriby will need to start picking up more points soon to climb out of the drop zone. Today’s visitors are Chorley who currently sit 13th in the table. We have met Chorley several times over the years and it’s always a tough game against them. They are a very well organised side, but haven’t had the best start to the season after pushing for the play-off spots in the last few seasons. They have won their last two games including an impressive 4-1 home win over Darlington in midweek, so will come to the EVM Stadium full of confidence. We need to set up well again and look to take our chances when they come our way. Hopefully Steve Housham can mastermind a vital win for Ferriby today. Enjoy the game!
