CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Dereham Town FC to our home at SCT, on this September Saturday afternoon, and after their long journey from Bury. I hope they can enjoy some hospitality, and after an enjoyable game they all have a safe return journey home. May I also personally once again take this opportunity to welcome all those local residents that have decided to join us as new supporters through our season ticket initiative this season. I know that the benefit of the ÂŁ30.00 Season Ticket for four has made a lot of difference to the families that are involved at this time with this initiative, and I hope during the next few weeks we have more families join us and become new supporters. Well, here we are back in league action at home after many weeks of cup competitions on the road which involved the club breaking some records. Tommy and the squad took the club to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup - the first time that has been achieved,

unfortunately we did not turn up to the races at Merstam FC and in my opinion let the manager and myself down but as they say that is cup football. Last Saturday we were playing away in the FA Trophy and once again, in my opinion as chairman, we lost the game due to missed chances and being second to the ball throughout the game so we quietly left the competition this year, which was very disappointing for myself as I love cup football. But now we have to concentrate on the bread and butter of the league and ensure we take advantage of the games in hand. As the league positions show, we have a number of games in hand over the other clubs and should we win those games in hand our position will change from being in the bottom three to around 6th or 7th, of course we have to win those games to achieve that result. Recently with the personal assistance of Ian Docker and a lot of hard work on both our parts I have entered into an agreement
with a professional education provider that will support a oneyear apprenticeship scheme for 16-18 year olds. That will allow the pupils on the course to study for an exceptional standard of education, together with the coaching aspect supplied by Ian and his staff. These courses will initially be held at the ground known as Long Lane in the area of Kidbrooke where Long Lane Junior Football Club play their games. The marketing of these intended courses will start next week in earnest. I feel that this could be the start of a long business relationship with Mick Northwood the CEO of the Long Lane Junior Football Club, and I intend in the future to base ALL of the clubs community initiatives out of Long Lane under the leadership of our new Sports Development Officer Gary Ryan. At the same time to ensure that the football club can benefit from gaining grants and additional funding to help with this work in the community, I have set up a new company based on a Community Interest Company
CHAIRMAN’S NOTES
Limited by guarantee, “a NonProfit Organisation” named as Thamesmead Town Football Club “WITC” CIS, making Ian Docker a fellow director with myself on this company, so hopefully we can now take our community work forward with the assistance of external grants. Here I am back on my soap box and carrying on in the open door policy that I like to support within this club. As I advised you a couple of weeks ago, I was awaiting certain matters that could assist the financial stability of this fine football club, rather than the club just relying on my own financing as it has to-tally over the last few years. Unfortunately a number of those haven’t come to fruition, for a number of reasons, one of them that has annoyed me, a number of pending investors that I have met to get involved over the long term, have of course carried out their own due diligence of the club and thankfully like the way the club is formed and run by myself and my fellow directors.
but they, not being football men, are concerned that on the field we may not be as strong as off, which excuse my language is total rubbish. I have put together a management team that I feel will take this club to there or thereabouts for pro-motion this season, yes we are having a blip at this time, but I have total faith that Tommy will turn it around naturally and if I feel after Christmas we have a problem Tommy would be the first person to come and discuss the matter with me. Therefore, as it would seem now that I will not receive any financial help from outside the club at this time I will have to continue with the personal funding, but rather than before all external initiatives that the club operate from now on must now work more efficiently so we do not leak finances with no return. That is one of the reasons I have set up the CIS Company to benefit from being able to apply for individual funding for all of our initiatives as required.
They fully understand that I have Tommy Warrilow and Alex O’Brien as a very strong and able management team, but although they have read and digested the five-year business plan together with the football development plan, which they are impressed.
To finish on my soap box, I know since I took over the running and ownership of this club I have made changes not all liked by some, but I will say once and for all whilst I am running this club with my money I do not want to hear negative comments around the club especially in my ear shot.
But then in discussions they looked at the position of the team, at this time near the bottom of the league. As I have said there are many reasons for this and if we win our games in hand, you see us up towards the play-off places,
It does not resolve anything it only makes things worst and effects everyone’s confidence, I may feel down when we lose, but I do not speak to anyone including the management as I feel after my experience over the years some
time words and comments can be taken out of context due to your own personal feelings. Be assured I totally respect that ALL those that give up their time freely to assist the running of this club. I have to say our Boardroom hospitality that we offer is second to none, even by some of those clubs playing at a higher level, so with Sue’s help I will ensure we treat our visiting officials to the existing high standard. I know things are difficult when teams do not perform to their best ability and we all have our own views on this, but whilst I am prepared to fund this football club and support my management team and all the individual players without hesitation. I do not want at any stage the clubs off the field problems to affect the players, they have a hard enough job getting to know each other and playing to their strengths, remember, we are still re-building our squad, so I ask that I need positive vibes from all those that are involved and support this fine old club. Be assured it is a very lonely position as owner and chairman as the buck stops with me, so when I come to the matches home and away, I feel every minute of the game as I am sure Tommy and Alex do, so let’s all be positive, if not, may I politely suggest you follow another team. Now let’s enjoy the football. Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

MANAGER’S NOTES
Tommy
WARRILOW I’d like to welcome everyone especially those who have made the trip down to see us from Dereham Town – hope you’ve had a good trip and have a safe trip home! Talking of home, it’s great to be back at Bayliss Avenue after what seems like an age. We seemed to have a load of games at home and then all of a sudden it’s been the opposite! Now we’ve come home, we must ensure that we make our games in hand count on the teams above us whilst at the same time continuing with
our decent home form – and to do that we need you to carry on your great support and backing! I’ve always said that you can’t analyse every single loss, every single win – what I’ve always done is to look at blocks, and I always look at the first Saturday in January whatever date that may be – first game into the New Year you see where you are and look at the next couple of months. The best time to put any kind of run together is towards the end after all as you don’t win anything at Christmas. Don’t get me
wrong it’s nice, but you don’t win anything for it! Whichever way you look at it, we’ve gone down in the league table through no fault of our own – indeed through being successful in the FA Cup and playing ex-tra games! Others have been playing Ryman games while we’ve been playing cup football and that always seem to happen at this time of year. Bottom line is that we’ve created club history in the FA Cup – now it’s time to press on in the league.

MANAGER’S NOTES
This is such a tight league – even Tuesday night we got into the changing room after the game and saw everyone had been beating everyone else again! We know what we’ve been brought to the club to do and we are a work in progress, and I don’t think that we’re a million miles away. We go into today and we can’t feel sorry for ourselves following our recent results – we’ve just got to get on with things; after all it’s all part of football! We’re going through some bad – no that should read frustrating times, where we’ve been giving ourselves far too much to do in games. Its basic stuff really that we’re getting punished when we
make a mistake and when we get into good areas, we’re not making it count! To be honest, Ware’s second goal on Tuesday highlighted that we’re getting the rub of the green either when Tyler’s got a shot covered and we stick out a leg and it deflects in! It gave us a big mountain to climb in the second-half, but the boys came out and had a go, only to get caught with ten minutes to go with the third goal. But we’ve got to stop giving ourselves these targets – it’s hard enough to win a game of football without going one or two behind.
board and that’ll help us with the most important thing at the moment – to help climb up the league. I’d just like to finish by welcoming the younger supporters here today for the first time courtesy of our Passport scheme. It’s just another step forward for our work with the local community and I’d like to thank you for your support this afternoon and hopefully in the coming weeks and months. See you in the Mead Bar after the game! Enjoy the game!
We’ve come back before but we can’t take it for granted that we can do it eve-ry single week! We just need to get a result on the

In her regular column, first-team physio Carly Payne brings us up to date with the current injury list...
Welcome to Bayliss Avenue. It’s been a busy period for us having back-to-back midweek and weekend games on the road for the last 3 weeks. To say luck hasn’t been on our side recently is an understatement, losing first-team goalkeeper Andy Walker after he suffered his horrendous knee injury 3 weeks ago. Then for Joe Vines to pull up within 20 minutes on Saturday having torn his hamstring we find ourselves without two big characters.
Walks suffered a broken knee cap and a torn tendon in his right knee, after unfortunately colliding with one of our defenders at Great Wakering in what initially seemed like a dislocated knee and saw him undergo surgery 48 hours later. On a more positive note, Saturday marked the long awaited return of captain Scott Kinch back into the side after a month long period out with injury.
his knee injury in the opening weeks of the season and we hope to have him back and available to play within the upcoming month. That’s all from me. Enjoy the game and lets all get behind the boys and secure ourselves 3 points to get out league campaign underway again. Carly Payne First-team Physio

THE UNDER-21S
THE
UNDER-21s Good afternoon everyone,
Those of you who didn’t go to Ware with the first-team on Tuesday may have been here at Bayliss Avenue to see our first win of the new season, when we beat AFC Hornchurch 1-0. It’s a great feeling, especially to get that monkey off of our backs and that we finally have some points on the board and something we can push forward with. Tuesday night showed and proved what the importance of a few firstteam players in the side is for the youngsters – its not only beneficial for them but for our lads. Let’s face it they have the chance to play alongside some experienced firstteamers. And on Tuesday at least it showed! The work rate all across the park was immense, but especially the three central midfielders who allowed the rest of the team to perform. I do though want to give a few words for our keeper Max Ovenden who has clearly grown in confidence being part of the first-team setup in recent weeks. He made two or the three quality

saves that kept us in the lead, it goes to show what the first team experience can do for a player. For the record the game’s only goal arrived just ahead of the half hour mark af-ter Jordan Williams was fouled in the box and George Jeffery stepped up and calmly struck the ball home bottom left hand corner to give the boys a deserved lead. It was a big step for the boys and finger crossed we can build on it in our next game. Enjoy this afternoon and let’s hope that Tommy and the boys get the three points… Finally watch out for some really exciting news concerning our work with you the local community which will be coming out in the near future, and welcome to all of our new younger fans here today courtesy of our new “Passport Scheme” – more of which in Tuesday’s programme, Cheers for now. FROM THE
SECRETARY’S DESK
Good afternoon everyone, it seems ages since we’ve had a home game so it’s nice to be back at the SCT. I welcome our visitors from Dereham and hope they enjoy their brief stay with us. Much of our time on the road has involved cup matches, with visits to Hanwell (FA Cup), Great Wakering, Hornchurch, Folkestone (Kent Senior Cup) and Corinthian Casuals (FA Trophy) unfortunately we did not pick up victories in any of them.
We will now concentrate on re-establishing ourselves in the league, we are a few games behind most teams, but we have no games outstanding so a programme is in now in place to get the matches played. Tommy will be looking to strengthen the squad to get our season back on track. Most of you will be aware of the injury to our goalkeeper Andy Walker and I’m sure my fellow
article writers have mentioned it, but we are in constant contact with Walks and although his recovery will be slow he remains positive and we all wish him well in his recovery. After today’s match we will be at home again on Tuesday evening when we entertain Thurrock. I hope you enjoy today’s match. Dave Joy Club Secretary

Thamesmead finally turn their attentions back to league action after a number of weeks on the road in cup competitions. Despite exiting the FA Cup, Kent Senior Cup and the FA Trophy, the club can take heart from reaching the third qualifying round of the FA Cup which was the furthest they have been in their history. Today’s opponents, Dereham Town sit in midtable in 10th-position in the league, but come into this clash on the back of a 2-1 loss to

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
Brightlingsea Regent. That loss ended a fruitful sequence of three straight victories in which they managed to beat AFC Hornchurch, Witham Town and Heybridge Swifts.
The Mead sit in a deceiving position in the relegation zone due to their cup exsertions having played the least games in the division at nine. That said, Thamesmead won’t want to languish near the bottom of the table for much longer and need to pick up a result this afternoon.
CLUB HISTORY Dereham Town Football Club was founded in 1884, spending many of its early years in the local Norwich District and the Dereham & District Leagues.
Until 1965, the Club played in the Norfolk and Suffolk League prior to the formation of the Anglian Combination. In 1988-89 Dereham Town was relegated from the Premier Division of the Anglian Combination, thus losing their proud record of being the only Club to have never played outside the Premier Division since the League’s formation in 1965. The following season Premier Division status was regained when the Division One title was claimed. December 1996 saw the Club move from its previous home on the Council owned Recreation Ground into the plush surrounding of the new site at Aldiss Park. The Club’s first full season at Aldiss Park (1997/98) saw the dream become reality when Eastern Counties League status was achieved with the club winning a first Anglian Combination Premier Division title. The Club’s opening season in Eastern Counties League football (1998/99) saw the club finish seventh in Division One and reach the inaugural Division One Knockout Cup Final where League Champions Clacton Town beat us. Season 1999/2000 saw the First Team again finish seventh in Division One whilst the Reserves were crowned Champions of Anglian Combination Division Three. The start of season 2000/2001, saw the First Team secure
promotion to the (then) Jewson Premier Division. Their first season in the Premier Division saw Dereham finish in a creditable 12th position. An inconsistent first-half of the 2005/06 season was followed by an excellent second-half which saw Dereham suffer only three defeats from mid-December and which culminated in the winning of the Norfolk Senior Cup at Carrow Road.
Season 2006/07 was the most successful in the Clubs history to date. The Norfolk Senior Cup was retained with a 1-0 victory over eventual League Champions Wroxham, sixth spot in the League was our highest ever finish. In March 2008 former Magpies player, Matt Henman, replaced Rob Taylor as manager after captain Adam Gusterson had briefly held the reigns as caretaker manager. Fourth place in the League was achieved with victory over Mildenhall Town in the last match of last season. Season 08/09 again saw a fourth place finish in the Ridgeons Premier Division, a run to the fifth round of the FA Vase and, as in the previous season, a disappointing defeat in the semi-final of the Norfolk Senior Cup. Season 09/10 was a good one for the Club despite the First Team having, by their recent high standards, a mediocre campaign eventually finishing tenth in the Ridgeons Premier Division and, for the third consecutive season, falling at the semi-final stage of the Norfolk Senior Cup.
THE OPPOSITION
In season 2010/11 the Magpies were runners up in the Ridgeons Premier League and won the Norfolk Senior Cup at Carrow Road, defeating a strong Kings Lynn Town side. Season 2011/12 was relatively disappointing with the side finishing in mid table in the League; however, the younger sides continued to thrive and hopefully many of these players will be pushing for a first team place in the future. Season 2012/13 saw the Magpies achieve their first promotion since 1997/98 when the Thurlow Nunn Eastern Counties League Premier Division title was won and, with the necessary ground improvements in place, promotion to the Ryman League was achieved. Season 2014/15 saw further consolidation in the Ryman League with a second successive 7th place finish in Division One North. A good run in the FA Cup came to an end at Conference North Boston United. For our Reserves the season was once more a struggle but the squad produced some fine football without securing the results their play often warranted. Another strong season in Ryman One North saw the Magpies end the 2015/16 season in 9th place. Again, a play-off place was briefly in view but in the event we finished 12 points off 5th place. However, the season ended on a high when a 2-0 victory against Ryman League bound Norwich United, at Carrow Road in May, secured the Norfolk Senior Cup for the fourth time in 10 years.

It’s been an interesting couple of weeks for the Academy lads as they have now realised what a strong league we are in - we lost our first game here at Bayliss Avenue 1-6 to Crystal Palace Trust and then lost 3-8 away to a very strong Dulwich Hamlet side. Gary Ryan and I keep instilling good discipline within the squad, but it’s going to take time and time is what the lads have, so I’m confident that the results will come, but more importantly their development is improving and the experience they are gaining will hold them in good stead.
I spent many happy years running the Gravesend & Northfleet / Ebbsfleet United Academy and we have installed a coach in the College to look after fourteen students which we plan to run along the same format as our Academy here at Bayliss Avenue. The plan is that it’s being run as our satellite center and both the Chairman and I are very pleased to have them on board and look forward to working with the Head – Jane Partridge – and her staff and the lads in their Academy Schools League. Finally, good luck to Tom and the lads! Cheers.

THE CHARLTON BROTHERS BOBBY AND JACK...
Our series celebrating the 50th anniversary of England’s 1966 World Cup win today focuses on two brothers instrumental in securing Alf Ramsey’s side the Trophy. MIKE GREEN today tells the story of Bobby and Jack – the Charltons…
Robert “Bobby” Charlton was born 11 October 1937 – belated 79th birthday for Tuesday – is regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time, and an essen-tial member of the England team who won the World Cup in 1966. He played almost all of his club football at Manchester United, where he became renowned for his attacking instincts and passing abilities from midfield and his ferocious longrange shot.
20
THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
Elder brother John “Jack” Charlton, was born 8 May 1935 and spent his entire club career with Leeds United from 1950 to 1973 – his 629 league and 762 total competitive appearances are still club records, and in 2006, Leeds United sup-porters voted Charlton into the club’s greatest ever XI. Not called up to the England team until a matter of days before his 30th birthday, Jack went on to score six goals in his 35 international games and to appear in two World Cups (1966 and 1970) and of course like his little brother was an integral part of the World Cup final victory over West Germany fifty years ago!
In those early years whilst Bobby went off to play for Manchester United, Jack, initially went to work applying to the Police Service before also becoming a
professional with Leeds United. Bobby’s career at Manchester United was legendary – he joined a team who were to become known as the “Busby Babes” – a reputation that only grew after one of the club’s darkest ever days – the 1958 Munich Air Crash – in which many of the United side who had been tipped to dominate European football and provide England with the base to build on for the World Cups of 1958 and 1962, so sadly died. Of the 44 passengers and crew, 23 people (eight of them Manchester United players) died as a result of their injuries in the crash. Bobby somehow survived with just minor injuries and was one of just nine players who survived.
ENGLAND 50
The story of the 66 Finals is of course well documented – England drew the open-ing game of the tournament 0–0 with Uruguay, and Bobby scored the first goal in the 2–0 win over Mexico. This was followed by an identical score-line against France, allowing England to qualify for the quarter finals, where England defeated Argentina 1–0. Portugal were next in the semi-finals, and this turned out to be one of Bobby’s most important and best games for England. He opened the scoring with a crisp side-footed finish after a run after Roger Hunt had forced the Portuguese goal-keeper out of his net; his second was a sweetly struck shot after a run and pull-back from Geoff Hurst. Bobby and Hunt were now England’s joint-highest scorers in the tournament with three each, and a final against West Germany beckoned. The final turned out to be one of Bobby’s quieter days; he and a young Franz Beckenbauer marked each other out of the game. Bobby (and Jack of course) though had the last laugh as the World Cup was won 4–2 after extra time. When the Champions were defeated to the Germans in the 1970 Finals in Mexico it proved to be the last international for both the brothers – Bobby’s after a then record of 106
caps and 49 goals. His international career was over at the age of 32. On the flight home from Mexico, he asked Alf Ramsey not to consider him again. Jack, two years the senior and with 71 caps to his name, did likewise. Bobby then became the manager of Preston North End between 1973 and 1976, the year in which he was knighted. He also began a casual association with BBC for punditry on matches, which continued for many years. He joined Wigan Athletic as a director, and was briefly caretaker manager there in 1983. In 1984, he was invited to become member of the board of directors at Manchester United, partly because of his football knowledge and partly because it was felt that the club needed a “name” on the board after the resignation of Sir Matt Busby. He remains a director of the club to this day.
After retiring as a player Jack meanwhile worked as a manager, and after man-aging Middlesbrough Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle United he took charge of the Republic of Ireland national team in February 1986, and led them to their first ever World Cup in 1990, where they reached the quarter-finals. He al-so led the nation to successful qualification to Euro 1988 and the 1994 World Cup. He resigned in January 1996 and went into retirement. In 2007, while publicising his autobiography, Bobby revealed that he had a long-running feud with Jack. They have rarely spoken since a fallingout between his wife Norma and his mother Cissie (who died on 25 March 1996 at the age of 83) – Bobby did not see his mother after 1992 as a result of the feud. Jack presented his little brother with his BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. Bobby said later that he was ‘knocked out’ as he was presented the award by his brother. He and Jack received a standing ova-tion as they stood waiting for his presentation highlighting just how much the na-tion loved and still do two brothers born in the 1930s in a small mining village in Northumberland.

MAN OF THE MATCH
MAN OF THE
MATCH AWARD
We’re delighted that Erica Cooper and her daughter Charlotte are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award again this season. Throughout the 2016/17 season, Thamesmead Town will once again be presenting the Mead Man of the Match award after each home game. Again, we are indebted to Erica Cooper and her daughter, Charlotte, for donating the prize to the club. This year, the awarding of the prize will take place on the pitch as the Mead leave the field. So hang around for a few minutes at the end of the game to see who is the recipient of the Cooper Man of the Match award.
