ISSUE 09 Welcome

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to today’s Bostik League South fixture against a club who knows Princes Park very well… Today we welcome Greenwich Borough who of course shared this fine stadium before we did, and before they of course returned “home” to Greenwich. To the clubs officials, players and supporters welcome back to Princes and we hope that you all have a safe journey home back up the A2 later this Saturday afternoon. In today’s Mead, we remember the recent anniversary of the passing of a football

legend, we speak to Mead playmaker Ellis Green and there’s the latest from the Gaffer and the Chairman’s office. Don’t forget we’re back on the road on Tuesday when we head down the M20 to Hythe before we’re back here next weekend on SUNDAY when we start our second “March to the Arch” in the Buildbase FA Trophy with a home game with AFC Hornchurch at 2:00pm. See you then… Enjoy the game and safe trip home Greenie

PAUL BOWDEN-BROWN THE CHAIRMAN

May I extend a warm and friendly welcome to the officials, players of Greenwich Borough FC to Princes Park the club’s new home for the next five years, and after an enjoyable game and some refreshments they all have a safe journey home. Well here we are back at home once again on a Saturday afternoon and in league action, after our travels in this year’s FA Cup are now over for this season. To say I am personally not frustrated that we are not playing Hungerford away in the next round today rather than a league match would be totally untrue, for clubs like ours who rely on their chairman financing all of the club’s operations, I think in football they call it a “bank-rolled club” something I would love to change. So any competition that gives us the opportunity to bring extra revenue is welcomed, so losing a match I thought like many others mostly independent supporters and media outlets that we should have won had we taken our chances. But we relied on a replay, which resulted in us being well outplayed, and knocked out of the competition, and unlike some of the rumours big-spending Billericay FC our recent FA Cup opponents have never agreed to give us

PAGE 04

all of the gate revenue they are working as per the FA Rules of the competition 50-50. So, this year we will have to accept the £4,925.00 in prize money from the FA and the share of gate revenue of all the rounds of £1750.00 altogether totalling £6675.00, a considerably less sum than last year, but as I know all so well in non-league football do not rely on any cup revenue, as cup football is not a betting certainty. I personally feel for clubs of our size, collecting monies in the cup makes the discussions the chairman has with his manager that much easier, as during this time your manager may have taken the club to a playoff position or just off, that he feels it just needs that extra momentum maybe a new player or two is required to take the club over the line, which requires an increase in the budget. As the financial records will show ALL monies earned by this club is re-invested, I take no payment for my time and efforts to ensure the operations of the club on and off the field are run in a professional

THAMESMEAD TOWN V GREENWICH BOROUGH

manner. That also includes running our very successful academy at Long Lane, so let’s look forward to the next competition we are involved in the FA Trophy when we play AFC Hornchurch at Princes Park on the Sunday next week, which will certainly be a hard game as we know by previous encounters. Last Saturday those that were at the match, although one of our lowest gates, will agree it was a match to forget. As I have said many times before, I do not mind losing a game if the your opponents are better than yourselves, well last week we gave them all three goals and in my opinion they were not as good as us, but on the day they took their chances and as I said we gave all the three goals to them with a ribbon tied around each goal as a gift, so this loss was totally down to our actions no others. On Tuesday with the match against our local neighbours Phoenix Sports, Tommy made a few changes to the squad announced

> THE CHAIRMAN

for the match including bringing in a new player into the club. And the result was a very crisp, direct and enjoyable game to watch although nerve racking at times when Phoenix scored their second goal, but we held on with some very good football, so the game resulted in three points, as well as a well-deserved hat trick for Tashi. I have mentioned previously about our club support, or lack of it, as the records will show that as a football club we have a minimal band of supporters well under 30 paying and as I have stated on numerous occasions, a football club cannot survive very long with that type of support. When Keith left the club in early 2015, I agreed to ensure the club found financial stability, and the records will show I had to make the difficult decision to leave the SCT due to the unacceptable costs being charged the club for using all of the facilities which had dramatically increased from the original agreed rates agreed when the old directors and committee members terminated our remaining lease for Bayliss Avenue with the Trust and then Peabody so they could move into the new SCT Stadium. I personally believed that the club deserved one last chance to continue to operate due to its history, so that was the one reason I negotiated a five-year ground-share agreement with the directors of Dartford FC that would give them security of tenure within a first-class facility. Now that I have concluded this, we need as a club, need to increase our supporter base and I have offered a number of initiatives that would

hopefully increase the supporter base. The first, the continuation of the £30.00 season ticket, as we know this is not meant to be a moneymaking scheme more a genuine thank you to those Thamesmead residents that supported us in the early days at Bayliss Avenue. The second was the initiative offered to ALL Dartford Supporters that do not travel away with their team, I have offered these supporters to join the Mead Card for the sum of £5 that allows them to watch our home matches and all those supporters over the retirement age can come in for £2-50 not bad bearing in mind our gate entrance is £10.00 and £5 consecutively so a 50% saving. So I am sure you will agree that all the options are well worthwhile and beneficial, so please support my actions and inform all your family members, (we love children coming to the matches), work colleagues and any other person that you think might be interested to join us all on match days and have an enjoyable an afternoon or

evening watching the Mead. Let’s try and get the number up to a minimum of a 100 by Christmas that would prove to me that I have made the correct decision, and I will continue to financially support this great club, for without this increase it may prove that more decisive and irrevocable decisions will have to be made on behalf of the club. To all those that have taken advantage of these offers as those that have paid the normal entrance fee, I thank you for your continued support, you will always be made welcome as we have by everyone within Dartford FC. Finally, although many key businesses have agreed to become partners of the club, I would love to see more join this proud group of businesses, I am sure they will benefit from being involved and they would certainly be made very welcome. Now let’s enjoy a great afternoon of football. Paul Bowden-Brown Director and Owner

THE MANAGER <

TOMMY WARRILOW THE manager

Good afternoon everyone and a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Greenwich Borough to Princes Park. Well what a difference a week makes in football – from the highs of the performances against Billericay to the lows of the performance against Ramsgate here last week. Obviously, we were very, very, disappointed and to be honest we didn’t see that coming at all. It does us a massive favour as I said to the boys after the game – we’ve made a decent start to the season, but unfortunately, we’ve lost our unbeaten home record, but we’ve had a good start. So perhaps that loss has given us a little reality check! You can’t turn up for matches in this league and switch off. With all due respect to Ramsgate we gifted them all three goals and that gave us a big mountain to climb. It wasn’t to be – so we’ve got to accept it and move on and not drop to those levels again. Don’t get me wrong, I know that as an individual you’re going to have bad games during the season and as a team but my job is to try and prevent that performance from

PAGE 06

happening again. Individually, you can accept an off day but, team, it’s very hard to (accept) and I don’t think that anyone went away saying that they put in a good performance last week. I’m not going to go completely overboard on just one performance as I can’t fault what we’ve done this year, but we not going to accept it and press on, we’re going to crack down on things this year and keep demanding and banging the drum hopefully having something to play for at the end of the season. Off the back of that, I’m obviously absolutely delighted with three points at Phoenix on Tuesday. Again, that was the sort of reaction that any manager would look for – it’s always a difficult place to go and play. They are a very hard-working side, but I was more pleased with some of the chances that we created, but we must start taking them to make our lives a lot easier.

THAMESMEAD TOWN V GREENWICH BOROUGH

Again, the acceptance side in football is something that you must learn to live with, but we are getting in very good areas now and – going back to the Billericay game – we’ve got to start being more ruthless in front of goal and finish off teams. We’re a very forward-thinking side and if you don’t take that component you’re going to make it harder to win games. I was delighted for Tash on Tuesday – we’ve extended his loan for another month and whilst he’s had a few things to sort out which has interrupted the loan spell a little bit. It’s great to get him back and fully focused as he’ll get more games under his belt rather than stop start which is the way it’s been so far that he had after the first few weeks. For him to get his first hattrick for us at Phoenix was terrific! We freshened things up in the week and brought Tobi Ajala and I was delighted by his debut on Tuesday, but I’m still looking to

> THE MANAGER

freshen things up over the coming weeks. I appreciate that it’s relatively early in the season, but with teams going out of the FA Cup, there’s some fallout from other clubs and we’re like everyone – we’ll be looking to improve or better the squad to ensure that we’ll push forward. Unfortunately, Simon Glover and Dane Luchford have both left the club as I look to strengthen the side with some new faces – I’d like to thank both player for their time with us and wish them both well and they will both be the first to admit that they both need to be playing and that’s something that I cannot guarantee to either of them. These are just the horrible decisions that managers have to

make at times. We’ve done a deal with Ryan Flack that he’s gone to play for Chatham Town – in a similar deal that we have with Lennie Laker and Lordswood. We’ll hold the Bostik League registrations for both players, but we all felt that it was important for them to get some playing time in their legs, as at this stage we didn’t think that Flacky would with us. We’re delighted with some of the reports that we’ve been getting on young Lennie’s performances. The demands on the lads this year are high and that’s because I know they’re all very, very good players and we’ve proved it again.

Alright we had a so called bad day at the office on Saturday, but the lads don’t need telling that under no circumstances we’re not just going to plod along this year. I want everyone on their toes and I want everyone on their toes as we haven’t got a reserve team. I don’t want people just turning up expecting to play thinking there’s no competition for places as there is partly because there’s a variety of places that some of the players can play that we can shuffle it around. Thanks for your support and see you in the bar after the game, cheers as always! Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

LEON SMITH THE CAPTAIN

Hello everyone and welcome to Princes Park, where we take on Greenwich Borough in the Bostik League South Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Princes for another tough test for us. We got a good three points against Phoenix on Tuesday night, especially after they scored first early on. After that wake-up call, we settles down brilliant and Tash got two great goals to send us in 2-1 up at half time. We came out confident for the second half, but were at times putting ourselves under pressure and on the back foot by not keeping the ball properly and with our positioning at times. We know that we need to maintain our form and commitment for

the whole 90 minutes going forward into our upcoming fixtures to get maximum points which will of course mean we move up the table. We got the three points as the game finished 3-2 and it was a good – and needed – result after the disappointment against Ramsgate last Saturday. With that in mind, we know that we’ve got to go again today against another good side and another good test for us. Thank you for your continued support – you do make a difference! Enjoy the game! IAN DOCKER

THE Academy Hello, and here’s hoping for a successful season for Tom and the lads in our first year at Princes Park. Good luck to Tom and the lads today after an excellent result against Phoenix Sport’s on Tuesday night. Last Wednesday, our scholars played Charlton Trust and even though our lads showed significant improvement, we went down 4-6. As I stated in last week’s notes, our lads now need to up their attitude and improve on their game management and I was delighted in the way carried this out during the match. As part of their education, we involve the lads in the match preparations, team sheets, greeting officials and the like and we this week, I asked USHER KASIRYE to do a match report of the game... “Because I was injured I came to support my teammates in a ten-goal thriller. The first 5 – 10 minutes started off shaky as for both teams as the ball was in the air for the most part. But as both teams settled there was some good play and combinations. Unfortunately, Charlton Trust got the lead from a header from their striker with in the 30 minutes.

“However, my teammates did improve in creating some chances of our own with that talents of Dante and Sudeysi, resulting in us ending the half better than our opponents. “As the second half commenced Charlton Trust were back at it with two more goals from their striker giving him a hat-trick and leaving us 1-3 down. “But with the introduction of the exhilarating strikers Ade and Ryan from the boss, we added another goal threat giving Charlton something to think about. All in all, with the Ade’s hold up play allowed Myron to make runs from deep and score two goals and to finish a hat-trick with a penalty. “Even still, on the day Charlton was just the better team on the day and with their added 2 goals the game ended 6 – 4. Additionally, even though the score showed us looked out of it, the players still showed heart and determination to make a comeback which is promising for the future.” Yours in sport

CLUB HISTORY

thamesmead town Thamesmead F.C. was formed in 1969 as a community team for local youngsters. The club merged with Southlake FC in 1973, and by 1979 were fielding a Saturday team, playing on local park pitches. In 1980 the club entered the London Spartan League at the Intermediate Division Three level and dominated the divisions in the early 80s, but were couldn’t gain promotion to the Senior Division until they gained senior status. In 1985, the club changed its name to Thamesmead Town FC, and later that year they relocated to Bayliss Avenue, before finally gaining senior status during the summer of 1987 and were accepted into the London Spartan League Premier Division. The club moved to the Kent League in June 1990, where they remained until 2008, generally finishing amongst the top half dozen in the table. In 2002–03, the club missed the runner-up spot on goal difference, despite bizarrely having more points than Cray Wanderers, who won the League! Keith McMahon took the helm in the summer of 2006 and this would be the beginning of a new successful era for Thamesmead. In 2007–08, Thamesmead Town were champions of the Kent League, winning the title on the last day of the season. The title ensured promotion to the Isthmian League, where they were elected to play in Division One North in 2008–09. The summer of 2009 saw work begin to give Bayliss Avenue a massive transformation as work began on “Sportsman Club Thamesmead” The Project aimed to deliver first class facilities for the

local community as well as a stadium suitable for Conference South which was hoped to be completed for the start of the 2010/11 season. However, delays ensured and it was at this time around September 2012 that former Maidstone United Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown became involved in the club as a director, with the main aim of stabilizing the finances off the field and then during January 2015 became outright owner of the club as chairman. When Keith McMahon resigned in early 2015. Before in 2012-13, the Mead finished 3rd in this division and beat Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final to gain promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time in their history. The club’s stay in the Premier Division lasted just one season, and the club endured two turbulent seasons, after Keith McMahon resignation The Chairman appointed Terry Spillane as his replacement unfortunately his reign was terminated by the Chairman early 2016 although the team was in the play-off positions. In the summer of 2016 the Chairman appointed Tommy Warrilow as the first-team manager, and with a new man at the helm came fresh hopes for the season, as Warrilow alongside his number two former Leather and Dartford skipper Alex O’Brien looked to take the club back to the Bostik Premier League. Pre-season began with a completely new-look squad yet it proved to be a historic season in the FA Cup, when the club were the first to play a tie in the Channel Islands before reaching the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in the club’s history.

In March 2017, the Chairman announced that the Club due to unacceptable rising costs at Baylis Avenue the Chairman had reached agreement with the Directors of Dartford FC to enter into a five- year Ground share Agreement that would allow the Club to play their home games at Princes Park Stadium. Dduring the 17-18 close season this Groundshare was formally sanctioned by the new Bostik league directors, as well as confirming that for the first time, the Mead would be competing in the South Division for the 17-18 season. In August 2017, the club enjoyed a record 8-0 win in the FA Cup (away to East Preston) which was not only the Clubs biggest ever win in the competition but was also the first time, we have won a competitive game by eight clear goals!

Saturday 23rd September Princes Park Attendance: 74 Bostik League South

3 RAMSGATE

Chapman (9, 18), Paxman (32)

It was a bad day at the office for the Mead as we slipped to our first home Bostik League South defeat of the season against a Ramsgate side who arrived at Princes Park with just a solitary league win from their opening six games. Sadly for the home side it was very much a case of after the Lords Mayor Show after the two Emirates FA Cup ties with Billericay Town, as while the Mead struggled to get out of first gear for much of the early stages, the visitors struck twice early on to give the Mead an uphill battle that they never looked like overcoming! The visitors were gifted the lead in the opening 10 minutes when a terrible clearance fell straight to Chapman, who still had a bit to do, but beat Lewis Carey low to his left in the Mead goal with some aplomb. That was on nine minutes and nine minutes later, Chapman received another huge chunk of good fortune when his shot took a huge deflection off of a defender and as Lewis dived to his right following the original flight of the shot, the ball almost apologetically looped into the

opposite corner of the net. The Mead did rally briefly with Laurent Mendy and Ellis Green both going close, but the Gaffer must have been infuriated that the final ball for the majority of the game just wasn’t there. The home side’s luck on the day was summed up just before the break as first Bode Anidugbe hobbled off injured and was replaced by Scott Kinch who himself had hobbled out of the Billericay replay, and then the killer third Ramsgate goal arrived on the stroke of half time

when Paxman was on hand at the back post to head home Smith’s deep cross. The second half started brighter for the Mead as TashiJay Kwayie prodded one back for the home side within a few minutes of the restart that was as good as it otherwise got. It was a frustrating day all round and in the end a pointless one but in a period where games come think and fast, there’s little time to lick the wounds before a midweek trip to face Phoenix Sports on Tuesday. by Mike Green

CLOUGH REMEMBERED <

A TRIBUTE TO BRIAN CLOUGH

Cloughie Remembered Recently we marked the 13th anniversary of the death of arguably one of the legends of the English game. On 20th January 2004, BRIAN CLOUGH died at the age of 69 – our very own MIKE GREEN today pays tribute to Cloughie and remembers the day as a radio reporter the pair actually met! “It’s May 2001 and I’m “working” for BBC Kent and I had been assigned to travel to Burton Albion’s Eton Park ground for a game on the final day of the season which

PAGE 20

was supposed to decide the Southern League title between the home side and Margate (in the end Margate won the title four days earlier), and it was a day that I will never ever forget as it was the day that I met the Burton manager’s Dad! The Burton manager then, as it coincidentally is now, was a young manger called Nigel Clough, and his Dad – arguably the biggest name in English football in the 40 odd years that I’ve been watching football – unbeknown to me was going to be sitting two rows in front of me whilst I was

THAMESMEAD TOWN V GREENWICH BOROUGH

trying to do one of my very first full match commentaries. Some 17 years on, I still remember being in total awe of the man who took his seat – bear in mind that he was a sixty-five-year-old Grandfather who was sitting there with his grandchildren who had been retired from any kind of football management for seven years. Yet still, there was an aura surrounding him, yet despite who he was, he greeted everyone who took the seats around him – the same as any one of you reading this would have done

> CLOUD REMEMBERED

to the person who’s sitting next to you – he was a “normal” grandad out for the afternoon! Of course, the word “normal” is one that I don’t think I have ever heard of in the same sentence and the great man’s name because without doubt he was the best manager never to manage England and in some people’s eyes he was simply THE best that there has ever been in this country. It’s often forgotten that before his career was cut short by a crippling knee injury on Boxing Day in 1962, Cloughie was a fine striker in his own right; scoring 251 goals in his career with Middlesbrough and Sunderland – he only made 274 League games – an incredible average of a goal every 91 minutes of his playing career, which incidentally is roughly the same as Lionel Messi’s current average for Barcelona! But it’s as a manager that he’ll be best remembered. He took Derby County to the title before reaching the last four of the European Cup – younger readers should ask their parents for a translation – before he took Nottingham Forest to the title and two European Cup Finals – both of which they won. All that as well as setting an unbeaten record of 42 League games which was only beaten by Arsenal’s “Invincible” of 2004.

The man was a genius and one who made others listen – except sadly at FA headquarters, as despite formerly applying twice, Clough was overlooked for appointing Ron Greenwood and Sir Bobby Robson respectively, and when Graham Taylor was appointed as Sir Bobby’s replacement in 1990, Clough was quoted as saying, “I’m sure the England selectors thought, if they took me on and gave me the job, I’d want to run the show. They were shrewd because that’s exactly what I would have done.” Finally, back to that May afternoon in 2001, and a radio reporter from Kent nervously

approaching a grandad after the last game of the season for an interview for a radio station he’d probably never heard of. “Excuse me Mr. Clough, could I please have a chat for Radio Kent?” I said shaking as I stepped towards the great man. He turned, looked me up and down, smiled and said, “Of course, young man!” and we happily talked on tape for nearly ten minutes… and when we were finished he shook my hand, cuddled his grandson and arm in arm they went looking for “young” Nigel! The word LEGEND is often used too much in sport, but in the case of Brian Howard Clough, I, for one, don’t think it does him justice! He was one of a kind, he really was…”

INTRODUCING

Greenwich Borough Greenwich Borough are the latest side to arrive at Princes Park and not much separates them and Thamesmead Town in the Bostik League South table. Both were in action on Tuesday night, offering up differing results. For the Mead, they bounced back from their 3-1 loss to Ramsgate to edge out Phoenix Sports 3-2. For Greenwich Borough’s part, they failed to bounce back from defeat to Shoreham last weekend, but did pick up a point in a 3-3 draw with Walton Casuals - a result which

PAGE 24

saw them 3-1 down at halftime. Joe Hicks had put Casuals ahead, before Isaac Sarpong doubled their lead only for Charlie MacDonald’s penalty a minute later a half the deficit. Sarpong got his second just before half-time, but back fought Greenwich with second-half goals from Ali Fuseine and MacDonald again. This should be an entertaining game, with both scoring plenty of goals and, for their troubles, conceding them, too.

> THE OPPOSITION

GREENWICH BOROUGH

Recent CLUB HISTORY Greenwich Borough FC was formed as Woolwich Borough Council Athletic Club in 1928 and played most of their home games at Danson Park, Welling. The club joined the Woolwich and District League and were champions at the first attempt. Owing to their success, “Borough” was awarded senior status and joined the Kent Amateur League Division 1, where they failed to build upon a bright start over a number of years. The club moved a ground at Harrow Meadow, Eltham in 1933 and briefly disbanded during World War II. In 1948 they relinquished their senior status to join the South London Alliance League Division 2. In 1955, Woolwich Borough Council won the South London Alliance League Division 2 title and also came runners-up in the Elizabeth Jacques Cup. The following season they won the Division 1 title and were promoted to the South London Alliance Premier Division. The club then enjoyed their most successful period ever when they won the Premier Division title for six years running from 1961 to 1966 inclusive. In 1965 the club changed their name to London Borough

of Greenwich FC following a change of London Borough boundaries. The change of name was inauspicious and the club endured a trophy less drought until winning their seventh South London Alliance Premier Division title in 1974. In 1976, the club transferred to the London Spartan League and managed to finish runnersup in the Queen Mary Cup. The club regained its senior status the following year. The club continued to enjoy periodic success in the 1980s, including winning the London Spartan League Senior Division title in 1980 and the London Spartan League Senior Cup in 1983. For the 1984–85 season, the club changed to its current name of “Greenwich Borough FC” upon joining the Kent Football League. The club finished sixth in the league but also managed to win both the Kent League Cup and the Kent Senior Trophy. In 1987, Greenwich Borough won both the Kent League and the Kent League Cup double, scoring 113 goals along the way. In 1988, Borough again won the League and hoped to progress to the Southern Football League by way of significant planned improvements to their Harrow Meadow ground which

were eventually blocked by Greenwich Council. The 1997–98 season saw a restructuring of the Kent League (known since 2013 as the Southern Counties East Football League) and Greenwich Borough being placed in the newly formed Premier Division. The Borough finished in 5th – their highest position for 9 years – and also won both the Kent League Cup and the Kent Senior Trophy. In the 2007–08 season the Borough set a new club record in the FA Vase by beating Horley Town, Thamesmead Town, Chichester City United, Wembley FC and Harefield United to reach the 5th round, before finally bowing out to Hungerford Town 1–2 in a tightly contested replay. The club also achieved a 3rd place finish in the league. In the 2013–14 season, the club reached the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup before being knocked out to Worcester City of the Conference North division. In the 2015–16 season, the club achieved promotion to the Ryman Isthmian Leagues South under player/manager Gary Alexander. In their first season in the Ryman League South they finished the Season in third place with a total of 95 points .

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

ELLIS GREEN

In the latest of our player features in The Mead, we’ve been talking to one of the Mead’s player makers who seems to be enjoying a new lease of life since our move to Princes Park – Greenie has been talking to ELLIS GREEN

games there felt albeit lifeless as the atmosphere isn’t the best but at Dartford you just get the feeling that you’re playing at a proper ground. “I’m really enjoying my football at the moment,” Ellis went on. “I’ve lost quite a bit of weight from last season, so I feel more mobile which makes getting up and down the wing easier.

Ellis is in his second season with the Mead and clearly it’s a completely different club from the one that he first joined. Ellis though didn’t agree entirely as he said: “Not much has changed in terms of the set up besides the fact we now play at Dartford. I’d say the main difference is that the majority of our young players that last year was their first full season in men’s football so now they are a lot more familiar with what this level of football is all about and you can tell by their start to the season.” A lot was made of the club’s last two season’s campaign in the FA Cup – playing on Guernsey last year and big spending Billericay this – we asked Ellis for his view from the pitch. “I think this year’s exit was more disappointing considering we had a lot of chances to beat Billericay in the first game, one which everyone wrote us off in.

“I think all the boys will look back at that game with some regrets as it was there for the taking and on another day, we could have scored four or five in the second half. “You can always look back and think ‘what if’, but last season Merstham were by far the better team when they knocked us out last season and so were Billericay in the second game so they both deserved to progress.” It seems as if it’s a new start for everyone at the club this season with our move to Princes Park – we asked Ellis just how have the players taken the new surroundings and has it helped so far at least with performances? “The facilities at Dartford are much better and will help the gaffer attract better players because the surface and ground is on another level to Bayliss Avenue. Some of the

“I’m not getting any younger and playing twice a week is hard, but we’ve only got a small squad, so we all just have to dig in. Playing for Tom and OB has been decent; they’ve got us more organised this season and have strengthened the areas that we were weak last season so hopefully we can keep winning and push up the league.” Finally, our “Five First’s” as we ask everyone the same five questions… First football kit bought (either for you or by you)? Purple Tottenham away shirt with #4 Popescu on the back. First album/CD owned? Ja Rule - Rule 3:36.. First football match attended? A Charlton game when I was about seven years old. First car owned? Vauxhall Corsa. First foreign holiday? Toronto, Canada.

CRAIG’S CORNER <

CRAIG GIBSON THE coach

Welcome to Princes Park our new home - Jamie and Greenie have finally let me write some words for the programme, so here goes!

Good afternoon and welcome to the game today, we entertain Greenwich Borough in yet another “local derby”. Last Saturday started with such high hopes against Ramsgate, after the FA Cup ties versus Billericay Town I genuinely felt we could lay down a marker with a good result, but what do I know! Tash pulled one back soon

PAGE 28

after the re-start, but our “comeback” never materialised and mine, along with many other “Meady’s” Saturday evening /weekend was ruined. But that was only the start for yours truly!!! So thoroughly depressed and wondering why I still love this game after “bbbbbbb” years Involvement I had the pleasure to once again visit a casualty department on the Sunday morning.

THAMESMEAD TOWN V GREENWICH BOROUGH

Having hobbled about the place for the last couple of weeks, Including the FA Cup ties, I finally relented and went to A&E. To the amusement of many I have fractured a couple of small bones in my right foot, unfortunately not for the first time LOL. I did not dare tell the doctor’s that I was still kicking a ball about & proceeded to tell them I

tripped up the kerb walking my dog’s to which all the staff had a good laugh at my expense AGAIN!

> CRAIG’S CORNER

On a serious note the NHS gets a bashing – however the service was excellent and fast – so thank you NHS. Quite how you can go from being so flat on a Saturday to such a high on a Tuesday night baffles me! The 3-2 victory in my opinion flattered Phoenix, we were superb on the night, could & should have won by a far wider margin as we bossed almost every aspect of the game. We played some very good football at times & were very worthy winners. Behind early on, Tash proceeded to score a very decent hat-trick as we overpowered Phoenix. The team all round performed well, with new signing Tobi Ajala offering that little bit of extra quality needed to unlock defences. All the talent in the world is actually worth nothing without hard work. Hard work without talent will beat talent without hard work every time, think about it! Enjoy the game today – but please mind my foot!!! Craig Gibson First-team coach
