MANAGER’S COLUMN
STEVE
HOUSHAM
May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Macclesfield Town to our home this afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Macclesfield Town in the FA Cup qualifying round. Today is another chance to create history for the club and the players will give everything they’ve got to achieve this.
we will get the rub of the green our performances deserve. The main concern is the scoring of
Cup is all about shocks and dreams and we will be hoping and giving everything to keep our dreams alive.
The FA Cup is the greatest competition to be involved in, even more so for Non-League clubs and come 5pm tonight we hope to be in the hat for the draw on Monday evening. Our last game saw us compete against the league leaders Forest Green Rovers and for most of the game we competed well, but yet again their first goal comes from a dubious referee decision, but also I feel we could have defended the first two goals - both set pieces - better. In the end Forest showed their full-time qualities, but I feel the scoreline was harsh on the players as they gave another good account of themselves. As we all knew this was going to be a tough league and at the same time a harsh league, I remain positive that
goals, we as a group, have got to stay positive and the players know we must be more ruthless in front of goal. It would be a bigger concern if were not creating the chances. One game a goal will go in and more will follow as we have the strikers on board to get the goals. Trying to stop our dream today is Macclesfield who we know very well from our league meeting two weeks ago, in which we lost yet again by the odd goal. It will be another tough game, but the FA
Finally, as always, I can’t speak highly enough of you, the fans, to stick behind the players even in this bad run of results is a credit to you all. Myself and the players appreciate your fantastic support and like the players deserve there rewards so do you. So by 5pm tonight we hope to have you cheering us on into the history books. Keep believing! Steve Housham First-Team Manager

MACCLESFIELD TOWN
Attentions turn to cup action with Macclesfield Town heading to the Eon Visual Media Stadium to take on the Villagers... North Ferriby United could be set for their own piece of history this afternoon as they bid to reach the first round proper of the FA Cup. Standing in their way is Macclesfield Town, flying high in the National League, occupying the last the play-off spot after a solid start under manager John Askey. But if it’s one thing the FA Cup is notorious for it’s shocks and the Villagers will take heart from that and the fact Macclesfield suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Boreham Wood last time out. The two team met at the less than two weeks ago with the Silkmen edging a narrow 1-0 4

contest after a Dan Whitaker firsthalf penalty. Minutes later John McCombe saw red, but Ferriby couldn’t break down the 10-men in what turned out to be a frustrating afternoon for the Villagers.

Nickname: The Silkmen Founded: 1874 Chairman: Mark Blower Manager: John Askey Ground: Moss Rose Capacity 6,335
The form guide points to an away victory with Macclesfield only losing two on the road. That said they have come unstuck against teams they would have liked maximum points from the likes of York and Sutton United. Ferriby will have to find their scoring boots sooner rather than later having not found the net in their five league matches.

CLUB HISTORY
MACCLESFIELD TOWN The beginnings of the club can be traced in part to the 8th Cheshire Rifle Volunteers who played their first match in 1873. The Olympic Cricket Club also played football in Macclesfield, and in October 1876 the two organisations amalgamated to form Macclesfield Football Club. Macclesfield FC became members of The Combination League for the 1890-91 season remaining until the end of the 1896-97 season when they had to withdraw due to financial difficulties. Macclesfield FC re-emerged for the 1900-01 season when they became members of the Manchester and District League, where they finished as champions in 1909 and 1911. Macclesfield were founder members of the Cheshire County League in 1919 winning the League Cup in 1925 and achieving the League and Cup double in 1932. They retained the title in 1933 and the post war years championship victories in 1953, 1961 and 1964. At the beginning of the 1968-69 season they became founder members of the Northern Premier League, topping the table 12 points clear of Wigan in their first season. The feat was repeated the following season when they also won the inaugural FA Trophy at Wembley against Telford United. In 1979 the club finished bottom of the Northern Premier League but returned to winning ways with the Cheshire Senior Cup in 1983. The 1986-87 season saw the Silkmen win the Northern Premier League and promotion to the Vauxhall Conference.
Sammy McIlroy, was appointed manager at the start of the 1993-94 season. The 1994-95 season saw the Silkmen win the Vauxhall Conference, heading the table from 5th November 1994 until the end of the season, but were denied promotion to the Football League due to ground criteria. Success under McIlroy continued with their greatest triumph to date came at the end of the 1996-97 season when they won the Vauxhall Conference by five points, having trailed by 15 points at one stage. On this occasion success was rewarded with promotion to the Football League. In the 15 years as a Football League Club, the Silkmen found themselves in a mid or lower table position. There was instant success in the 199798 season, when they finished as runners-up in the Nationwide League Division Three, gaining automatic promotion. Nevertheless, they found life in the Second Division difficult, and finished the 1998-99 Season in bottom place and were relegated for the first time in their history. In 2004-05 when the completed the season in fifth position, only to be beaten in the Play-off semi-final by Lincoln City. The Silkmen then faced some difficult years and never regained a top-half position. In their 2009-10 season, the Silkmen saw the sudden death of manager Keith Alexander in March 2010. Further tragedy hit the club almost twelve months later when midfielder Richard Butcher died in his sleep just a few days shy of his 30th birthday.
Despite this Gary Simpson led his team to a respectable 15th position in the league. The Silkmen were hit by numerous injuries throughout the 2011-12 season which impacted on their overall performance and, they finished bottom of League 2. Steve King was appointed manager in the summer of 2012 for the Silkmen’s first season back in nonLeague football. Playing attractive football they were often chasing a play-off position. Towards the end of the season King was dismissed with John Askey taking over as caretaker manager, the team completing the campaign in 11th position. John Askey was appointed manager in the summer of 2013 completing the season in 15th position in the league. The 2014/15 saw the Silkmen make a real challenge for promotion, spending much of the season in the top five before just missing out on a play-off place. Following on from their near miss, the Silkmen pushed for a top five finish again in the following season. Ultimately they fell just short again, but it was another season of real progression for Macclesfield. With the appointment of Steve Watson as the new assistant manager of the Silkmen as well as the retention of the majority of the playing squad from last season, everybody at Macclesfield Town will be hoping the 2016/17 campaign could mark a return to the fourth tier for the Silkmen.

STANDS Sam Shepherd believes lady luck hasn’t been on North Ferriby’s side but goals will come... Saturday’s game against Forest Green Rovers continued a trend for Ferriby, but not one they will be keen to continue for much longer. They lost for the 5th time in a row and they again failed to score meaning they have drawn a blank in nine of the last 10 games.
They had a shot cleared off the line before the game was killed off by two more Forest Green goals late in the game. Once again Ferriby couldn’t be accused of not caring or not trying, but they just lacked that clinical touch in front of goal. I do
the Silkmen 2 weeks ago. Ferriby played very well that day and were denied a point by a dodgy penalty decision. If we manage to overcome the Silkmen today we will make
The visitors were top of the table so this was always going to be a tough game to get any points from, but it’s the lack of goals that is the worrying aspect of this poor run. Reece Thompson and Kyle Wootton have been brought in to provide strike power, but both are yet to find form in front of goal. The game started pretty evenly on Saturday with both teams having spells of possession, but the game turned on a very dubious decision yet again and once more it didn’t go Ferriby’s way. Forest Green were awarded a free-kick when their attacker appeared to trip over his own feet. The home crowd, management and players couldn’t believe it, but the free-kick was given and they scored from it. This was a bitter blow to Ferriby, but they didn’t let their heads drop and kept going. 22

believe we will turn the corner soon because we are creating chances we just need some luck to go our way at both ends of the pitch. We need to start picking up some points quickly to avoid being marooned in the relegation zone. Today we take a break from the relegation battle, as we face Macclesfield for the second time in as many weeks, this time in the FA Cup after losing 1-0 at the home of
the FA Cup 1st round proper for the first time in our history after falling agonisingly close in recent seasons especially last season when we lost on penalties to Stalybridge Celtic. Hopefully this time we can finally go where no Ferriby side has gone before and make the first round proper. Enjoy the game! Sam
