NUNEATON TOWN Looking to bounce back at the first time of asking, North Ferriby United face a tough test against the relegated Nuneaton Town.

The Boro endured a disappointing campaign last season finishing bottom of the Conference table ten points adrift of safety. Last time out saw Boston United role over Town in a 3-1 defeat. First-half goals from Ryan Robbins and Dayle Southwell put the Pilgrims on their way before Scott Garner sealed the win. The loss ended a four game unbeaten run in which they had beaten Gainsborough Trinity, Harrogate Town drawing against Stalybridge Celtic in the mix.

Nuneaton Town

CLUB HISTORY March 2008 saw a take over from the board that had run the club from 1991. The new directors soon found they had inherited excessive debts despite the sale of Manor Park to property developers. The new club reverted to its former name of Nuneaton Town and were demoted two divisions from Conference North to Southern League Division One. Following the demotion to the Southern League Midlands Division the club gained pro-

motion following a 1-0 play-off final victory over Chasetown at Liberty Way. The next season, 2009/10, Nuneaton found themselves in the Southern League Premier Division with several teams that were spending vast sums chasing promotion. After a slow start the team went on a fantastic run that saw them beaten only once at home and included a run of 14 straight victories, narrowing a 24 point gap between the leaders Farnborough to just 2 points at the end of the season.

Again, the play-offs beckoned and a 6-0 thrashing of big spending Brackley Town in the semi-final saw home advantage given to Nuneaton who faced Chippenham. The final went into extra time and it was befitting that a local player, Eddie Nisevic, who had come through the ranks, got the winning goal returning Nuneaton to the Conference North. Nuneaton’s return to the Conference North for the 2010/11 saw them start well and remain in the top six up until Christmas, where they gained top spot until the last week in March. Eventually after other clubs played their games in hand, Nuneaton finished just outside of the play-offs. Fortune smiled on The Boro when the club above them, Eastwood Town, were prevented from taking part in the play-offs due to a technical problem. Nuneaton faced AFC Telford Utd in the Play Off Semi-Finals but

North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

went down 2-1 on aggregate. The 2011/12 season was to see Nuneaton gain promotion back to the Conference Premier for the first time in 10 years. After maintaining a high league position throughout the season Boro’ were dealt a blow as the season entered its final few weeks when an administration error led to a 6 point deduction. This seemed to spur the team on and a final day 3-2 victory at Blyth Spartans ensured their play-off place. A superb semi-final 2nd leg victory over Guiseley, with a goal from Andy Brown in the last minute of extra time, meant that Boro had to travel to Gainsborough Trinity for the Play–Off Final. Again Brown (ironically the player concerned in the admin mishap) was the goal hero in

a game that saw Boro claim a 1-0 victory amid wild scenes of delight amongst the travelling supporters as the club won their place back in non-league’s top tier. The 2012/13 season saw Boro pitting their wits against the countries non-league elite. Up against many full time clubs it took a while to get to grips with their new environment but Boro’s team spirit and work ethic never waivered. Despite spending much of the season in and around the relegation zone a terrific run towards the end of the season saw Boro eventually finish in 15th place. The 2013/14 season surpassed all expectations with Boro leading the table early on and featuring in and around the play-off positions for most of the season.

North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

After manager Kevin Wilkin left for Wrexham, results tailed off in the last month or so of the season but they still finished in 13th position. A new manager, Brian Reid, was appointed and oversaw the last 3 games of the season. Season 2014/15 marked the Club’s 125th Anniversary. However, Boro made a poor start and this resulted in Brian Reid being replaced as manager by Liam Daish. Despite the managerial change Boro were in the relegation zone for most of the season and finally finished bottom of the table. Liam Daish parted company with the Club at the end of the season and was replaced by Kevin Wilson shortly afterwards.

MONTHLY AWARDS Vanarama announce National League September Player and Manager of the Month Awards.

After careful consideration the panel have announced the following winners for September Player and Manager of the Month Awards and would like to congratulate each worthy winner on their award. For the Vanarama National league North our pick for Manager of The Month goes to Dave Challinor of AFC Fylde, a worthy winner and all round nice guy the panel had this to say “It is often said that the opening month of a season a manager may take time to find his best formation and not only did Dave Challinor do that last season he has done it again this September. Regarded as one of the nicest managers at this level of the game, he knows what he wants from his payers even if it takes a short while to find it and maintain it. Moving into second place in the Vanarama North by picking up 10 points out of 12, it will be sometime before his commitment will allow his squad to slip from the high standards he sets himself and expects his players and back room staff to attain.”

Staying in the North, our next award goes to Lee Smith of Tamworth. The panel noted his tenacity to come back from a horrendous injury by saying “Each season individual awards are made at times not just for an attitude shown on the field of play or through leadership qualities. Often something comes to light which may propel a player into the spotlight through no fault of his own, yet he handles the attention in an exemplary manner. So it has been with Lee who unfortunately suffered a horrendous life threatening injury in the Vanarama North match away at Gainsborough Trinity. An accidental injury in a clash for the ball necessitated him being hospitalised in Lincoln and having his spleen removed. Full credit must go to him of how quickly he has demonstrated his courage to overcome this major setback. Hopefully he will be able to return soon to his full time occupation as a teacher and start to set targets to return to his love of football. The whole of football will join in wishing him well.” Vanarama and the panel would like to thank all players and manager across all divisions for some outstanding performances in September and we look forward to announcing October’s awards next month.

VIEW FROM THE

SID ELINE S Sam Shepherd discusses the fantastic win over Corby Town and things off the pitch... After dispatching Newton Aycliffe with relative ease in the replay Ferriby knew they would be facing Nuneaton Town today in the FA Cup third qualifying round, before that though they had the visit of Corby Town to get through. Corby sat in lower mid-table going into the game so it was a game Ferriby should have been looking to get three points from but with Kendall injured and Denton banned would they have enough fire power to get the win? The team selected by Billy Heath answered this with an emphatic yes as Corby were demolished 5-0 in a brilliant performance from The Villagers. They played flowing attacking football throughout with Danny Clarke doing a magnificent job as the stand in striker. He scored twice along with goals from Liam King,

Danny Emerton and Ash Palmer. This was the best performance of the season so far and Ferriby have quietly sneaked into 6th place in the table on the back of a remarkable 13 game unbeaten run in league and cup. It will take a very good side to beat Ferriby at the moment because the defence is looking solid and we are scoring plenty of goals, in fact Ferriby are now the top scorers in the division with 27 goals in 12 matches. Last Saturday was a success off the pitch as well as on it. It was the opening of the new club shop and to promote this the club offered half price entry to the game which I think was an excellent idea. This resulted in a crowd of over 400 who witnessed an emphatic 5-0 win, hopefully this will encourage some of them to come back again North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

this season. The shop was officially opened by Billy and Bobby and it was busy right up until kick-off. The club now has a far more extensive choice of merchandise for fans to buy and this can only be a good thing. Looking ahead to the match today it’s going to be a tough one. Nuneaton sit one place and two points above Ferriby going into this cup tie so there isn’t much to split the two sides. Nuneaton did lose 3-1 to Boston last weekend and Ferriby are full of confidence after last week’s emphatic victory over Corby so hopefully with home advantage we can make it through to the 4th qualifying round as we have done in the last two seasons. Enjoy the game, Sam
