ISSUE 10 Welcome

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to the start of the Mead’s tenth campaign in the Buildbase FA Trophy, as we welcome our old friends from beyond the Tunnel as AFC Hornchurch visit us for the first time here at Princes Park. In this afternoon’s Mead we talk to one of the Mead’s new boys; reflect on the Mead’s limited FA Trophy experience; we’ve the latest match action from last weekend’s derby with Greenwich and we call in for

a chat with the Gaffer and knock on the Chairman’s door, too. After today, we’re on the road to Molesey and Chipstead respectively, before we return to Princes a week on Wednesday – October 18th – when we welcome Herne Bay. So, until then, enjoy the game today and stay safe… Greenie

PAUL BOWDEN-BROWN THE CHAIRMAN

May I extend a warm and friendly welcome to the officials, players and supporters of AFC Hornchurch to Princes Park, the club’s new home for the next five years, and after an enjoyable game and some refreshments they all have a safe journey home. May I also extend a very warm welcome to our league chairman Nick Robinson – Nick, I would like to thank you for all the support and advice you gave the club when it was deciding its move to Princes Park; it was very much appreciated, and welcome to our new home! Well here we are back at home on a Sunday playing in this round of the FA Trophy against one of our old adversaries when we played in the Ryman North during the last few seasons as it was known at that time. If our history of our previous encounters is anything to go by, it will be a tough tie, but the way footballers raise their games for this type of game we should have an enjoyable afternoon of football. Well I think we all want to forget

PAGE 04

last Saturday with our game against Greenwich Borough. We had a great start, but ended up on the wrong end of a score line of 4-2. I think the word I am looking for is inconsistency, it would seem we will never know what team will turn up on the day of the match – one day we may play the opposition off the park, the next game we do not turn up! We all know all the players we have are good enough for this league Tommy just has to hope they start playing as a unit as we all know they can. We then travelled to Hythe on a cold Tuesday evening, Ian and I had left that bit earlier and had a chance to stop at Folkestone and have a cookie and coffee and chew over what was happening at the club during the week.

THAMESMEAD TOWN V AFC HORNCHURCH

I find it very enjoyable to relax and listen to someone that can explain everything about a game of football as Ian can. It’s surprising the amount of knowledge that man has we are so lucky to have him on board – a jewel in the crown and fitting into his role as general manager very well. Whilst we are talking about Ian, I must say how pleased I am at the way the academy is progressing at Long Lane. Ian has been up against it for a couple of years now, but it looks like we are there now he is assisted by Steve (the coach) and Linda (the tutor) a great professional team, and I would be shot if I did not thank Andrew Merritt and David Keith who, through SCL, are our funders for the apprenticeship scheme running out of Long

Lane – thank you all. Back to Tuesday evening. Ian and I arrived at Hythe to find a pitch that looked like moles had attacked all the surface, it transpired that the groundsman had dug out all the damaged area and laid soil and seed – not the best idea. I personally thought the pitch was really unplayable as a player could turn their ankles or knees so due to this fact Tommy decided not to chance play Tom O’Connor, so we lost our engine room in the centre of the park. We started slow and never recovered there was not much more to say other than we awoke around the 84th minute when Vines scored the goal,

but by then we were two goals down so we ended up on the wrong end of a scoreline of 2-1 - the reverse of the scoreline when we played Hythe at home only a couple of weeks ago. To be frank, as I am known to be, we were very inconsistent once again – the players need to look at each other – Tommy and his team duly supported by Ian and myself work very hard to ensure we are a squad; so please boys come out today and play as we know you can. The supporters that we have deserve better – remember they follow you and deserve you giving 100% at all times. I am proud of you so be proud of yourselves and repay the loyalty and support we all give you.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those Dartford supporters that join us on matchday when their team is playing away and taking advantage of our Mead Card initiative, it’s not bad gaining entrance to our matches for £5 and over 65s for only £2-50, remember telling all your friends you can enjoy an afternoon or evening watching TTFC. Now let’s enjoy an afternoon of good football and here’s hoping it will be us hosting Brightlingsea Regent in the next round. Enjoy the game! Paul Bowden-Brown Director and Owner

THE MANAGER <

TOMMY WARRILOW THE manager

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Princes Park this Sunday afternoon as we start our FA Trophy campaign today against AFC Hornchurch. I’d like to welcome two good friends of mine from our Ryman Premier days in Jim and Colin – both good football men and we may be at each other during a game, but I’ll look forward to having a drink with them both in the bar after the game. I’d also like to welcome back to the club Jay Porter who left us in the summer to join Hornchurch – he’s one of the nicest lad in football and it was a pleasure to manage him last season! We know that we’re in for a tough game this afternoon, as Hornchurch sides are always difficult to beat, and they’ve obviously had a great start to their campaign in the North. I know Jim and Col well and we’ve kept an eye on them prior to the game and PAGE 06

hopefully we’ll go into today as prepared as we can. There seems to be a pattern developing that we’re giving away silly goals and we’re not taking our chances. I don’t mind teams scoring against us, but if our opponents score a well worked goal then so be it! But us being sloppy defensively isn’t acceptable! At the other end, we need to be more ruthless with our chances – we know what we should do and the sooner we do that the better. The other night at Hythe, I felt that we created the chances that could have got us something but there’s no point feeling sorry for ourselves and we’ve got to get on with things. One thing we always do as a

THAMESMEAD TOWN V AFC HORNCHURCH

management team both here and elsewhere that we tend to go on little runs – we did it last year and there’s no reason that we can’t do it here again. It’ll just take a bit of fine tuning and I’m sure we’ll be fine. The lads have had some criticism and they’ve had some praise which is what footballs all about – it’s about accepting things and learning from them and developing as a team. I’d like to welcome Donovan Simmonds to the football club. I’ve known him since his Dover days and followed him in his career through Chelmsford and other North and South sides he’s played for. He’s a good lad who I feel will be a great asset to us, and at 28 – that will surprise a lot of people – I hope he’s about to hit his peak once he gets

> THE MANAGER

some stability and regular football. And when we encourage him and get him playing we’ll have a very good player. I’m still looking to strengthen our squad – I’m totally up front with all the lads as it’s vital that we don’t stand still and just plod along. It’s my job to get the strongest possible side I can although I believe that we’ve got a very, very good squad here, it doesn’t stop you as a manager! These are a good set of lads

but now as I’ve said we’re giving away sloppy goals and attacking wise, we’re not taking enough of our chances. Again, being honest with the lads that cannot go on, but at the same time they’ve got time to rectify that but if someone does come along I think can improve the club I will act on it but I just believe that these boys don’t realise how good they can be when they do the right things. Now, we’ve got to accept what is happening and stop feeling sorry for ourselves that we’re not having any

luck; we’re not getting that – we’ve got to get out and start creating our own luck by being more ruthless and getting stronger. See you in the bar after the game – I’m told that the England game starts at 5pm so please join us for that… Cheers and thanks as always for your backing and your support, Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

LEON SMITH THE CAPTAIN

Hello everyone and welcome to Princes Park, where we take on AFC Hornchurch in the FA Trophy

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to Princes for another Sunday fixture – this time in the FA Trophy against AFC Hornchurch. Tuesday night saw us take the “short” trip to Hythe. Confidence amongst the boys has been better it has to be said, but we showed great team spirit down at the coast to create enough chances where we could have got something out of the game, but sadly we didn’t have the finishing touch and lost 1-2 to a well WWW.TTFCOFFICIAL.ORG

organised side who we gave two goals, too. We all now need to stick the bad run of results behind us and take the positives and the right attitude into today’s game against what I am sure will be a very good Hornchurch side. Thanks as ever for your support and fingers crossed it will be us facing Brightlingsea in the next round at the end of the month. Enjoy the game! Leon Smith First-Team Captain

mead matters REPLAY TUESDAY If today’s tie ends in a draw, the replay will be at The Bridge on Tuesday night (October 10th) at 7:45pm, meaning our rearranged league game with MOLESEY will again be postponed. Given that Molesey themselves were in Buildbase FA Trophy action yesterday (Saturday) our game on Tuesday may already have been postponed if their tie at Aylesbury was drawn. Please listen for announcement today…

ALEX RECIEVES LEAGUE’S AUGUST PRIZE Mead striker ALEX TENIOLA is pictured opposite last weekend prior to our home game with Greenwich Borough receiving his BETTING.NET Performance of the Month for his scoring exploits in August. Alex received his award shortly before kick-off from Mead Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown.

WELCOME DONOVAN We’d like to welcome DONOVAN SIMMONDS to Princes Park. Donovan joined us this week from Kingstonian and sadly had to miss the trip to Hythe Town in midweek due to work commitments and we hope he’ll be involved today – all before his birthday next Thursday!

SUDBURY IN THE LEAGUE CUP Following our win over Phoenix Sports in round one, round two of the Velocity Trophy has given us another home draw – this time against AFC SUDBURY on Wednesday 22nd November – kick off 7:45pm.

AND THE WINNER WILL FACE... We’re at the strange time of the Buildbase FA Trophy when we already know who the winners of today’s Preliminary Round tie will face in the First Qualifying Round. The eventual winners of today’s tie will host BRIGHTLINGSEA REGENT over the weekend of October 28/29...

THE Academy Good afternoon and here’s hoping that we’ll be facing Brightlingsea in the next round. It’s been another hectic week at the academy and, whilst Steve has been taking the lads through their drills, I’ve been putting our keepers through their paces. Wonu and Nathan have worked hard and have really improved on their handling and reactions and are now busy working on their dead ball and drop kicking. It’s great to see all the lads smiling and enjoying their training and it culminated in them beating Brentford Bees 1-0 on Wednesday. Steve Quashie took the team and unfortunately only had the bare eleven due to train delays and buses not turning up. With diligent defending and a ‘let’s defend deep and counter attack approach,’ the lads deserved their win and world class strike by Dante McIntosh sealed the win.

not fit at all to play. We all went on the pitch and worked together as a team from start to finish. I, as captain, tried to keep the team disciplined and also manage the game to try and grab a draw, whilst using what we had worked on in training with our Boss Ian and coach Steve.”

who had not been playing in their favoured position kept their heads and played for the badge on the shirt. Great performance from the lads onto the next game.”

We managed the game very well and we pressed and won our individual battles. Half-time came and we’d kept it to 0-0. Steve took the team talk and went over some of the things we had done well and what we should do looking into the second half.

Ian Docker Academy Manager

“Fifteen minutes into the second half, I picked up the ball and beat around 5 players, before picking out the top corner with my weaker foot; it was a chance I saw to counter attack and I took my chance and with a bit of luck I managed to score and put us 1-0 up.

Steve, Linda our course tutor and I are very proud of the lads. This season we’re getting the players to write the match reports – here’s Dante’s thoughts on Wednesday’s win.

“After that we sat back in our own half and managed the game by keeping compact. We didn’t get carried away by being undisciplined in trying to nick another goal and we all did our roles and responsibilities and was able to keep a clean sheet, winning the game 1-0 away from home.

“Against Brentford, we went into the game positive, despite having the bare eleven and our striker

CLUB HISTORY

thamesmead town Thamesmead F.C. was formed in 1969 as a community team for local youngsters. The club merged with Southlake FC in 1973, and by 1979 were fielding a Saturday team, playing on local park pitches. In 1980 the club entered the London Spartan League at the Intermediate Division Three level and dominated the divisions in the early 80s, but were couldn’t gain promotion to the Senior Division until they gained senior status. In 1985, the club changed its name to Thamesmead Town FC, and later that year they relocated to Bayliss Avenue, before finally gaining senior status during the summer of 1987 and were accepted into the London Spartan League Premier Division. The club moved to the Kent League in June 1990, where they remained until 2008, generally finishing amongst the top half dozen in the table. In 2002–03, the club missed the runner-up spot on goal difference, despite bizarrely having more points than Cray Wanderers, who won the League! Keith McMahon took the helm in the summer of 2006 and this would be the beginning of a new successful era for Thamesmead. In 2007–08, Thamesmead Town were champions of the Kent League, winning the title on the last day of the season. The title ensured promotion to the Isthmian League, where they were elected to play in Division One North in 2008–09. The summer of 2009 saw work begin to give Bayliss Avenue a massive transformation as work began on “Sportsman Club Thamesmead” The Project aimed to deliver first class facilities for the

local community as well as a stadium suitable for Conference South which was hoped to be completed for the start of the 2010/11 season. However, delays ensured and it was at this time around September 2012 that former Maidstone United Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown became involved in the club as a director, with the main aim of stabilizing the finances off the field and then during January 2015 became outright owner of the club as chairman. When Keith McMahon resigned in early 2015. Before in 2012-13, the Mead finished 3rd in this division and beat Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final to gain promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time in their history. The club’s stay in the Premier Division lasted just one season, and the club endured two turbulent seasons, after Keith McMahon resignation The Chairman appointed Terry Spillane as his replacement unfortunately his reign was terminated by the Chairman early 2016 although the team was in the play-off positions. In the summer of 2016 the Chairman appointed Tommy Warrilow as the first-team manager, and with a new man at the helm came fresh hopes for the season, as Warrilow alongside his number two former Leather and Dartford skipper Alex O’Brien looked to take the club back to the Bostik Premier League. Pre-season began with a completely new-look squad yet it proved to be a historic season in the FA Cup, when the club were the first to play a tie in the Channel Islands before reaching the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in the club’s history.

In March 2017, the Chairman announced that the Club due to unacceptable rising costs at Baylis Avenue the Chairman had reached agreement with the Directors of Dartford FC to enter into a five- year Ground share Agreement that would allow the Club to play their home games at Princes Park Stadium. Dduring the 17-18 close season this Groundshare was formally sanctioned by the new Bostik league directors, as well as confirming that for the first time, the Mead would be competing in the South Division for the 17-18 season. In August 2017, the club enjoyed a record 8-0 win in the FA Cup (away to East Preston) which was not only the Clubs biggest ever win in the competition but was also the first time, we have won a competitive game by eight clear goals!

DOCKER REMEMBERS

WEMBLEY 2008 This season is the 49th edition of the FA Trophy currently sponsored by Buildbase. In the competitions entire history, Kent has enjoyed just a solitary win – back in 2008 – when our very own general manager IAN DOCKER was part of the Ebbsfleet United side that beat Torquay United in the Final. Greenie has been talking to Docks for the story of that historic day for Kent… Saturday May 10th 2008 was the day that a Kent club finally won the FA Trophy. Ebbsfleet were only the second side from the county to reach the final following Dartford’s defeat to Macclesfield in 1975 and on that day, the trophy finally came “home”. It’s hard to believe that it’s a decade ago as it seems like yesterday – a fact that Docs agreed with. “Yes time has flown by,” he told us: “but I still have fond memories of the match, especially as some of our youth team players were now in the first-team squad. “Everyone expected us to fall by the way side, but the gaffer – Liam Daish – his assistant Alan Kimble and Ron Hilliard set a real positive stance and made the lads believe

PAGE 16

in their ability as a group, especially on the one-off cup matches. “I remember the emotion at the end of the Aldershot match (the semi-final) and it was great to see even the most experienced players in tears as the realisation of playing at Wembley Stadium.” It was a journey that started against Carshalton, Dorchester, Weymouth, Burton before the last four meeting with Aldershot, but we wondered when you began to believe? “Liam believed from the first FA Trophy match we played that his team could go all the way and his catch phrase ‘BELIEVE’ – it rubbed off on everyone connected at the club. Leading up to the final, Liam wanted to do everything the correct and professional way and

THAMESMEAD TOWN V AFC HORNCHURCH

he made sure the players and staff went off to a suit shop and we were all kitted out in a navy suit and a red club tie. I even managed to squeeze into one, too!!! “Training was intense and all the lads knew their set pieces and their roles and responsibilities. We then travelled to our hotel and while the lads rested, us staff went off and played golf.” Smiling Docs remembered how the round went – “I was told to put my clubs away by the gaffer after I zigzagged up the fairway on the first hole and took nine shots to put the ball in the hole! “On the day of the final, the journey to the ground was great; there were so many Ebbsfleet flags and scarfs being waved as they saw the

This afternoon, in the AFC Hornchurch squad is a member of the Ebbsfleet squad that day – George Purcell – we asked Ian what George was like in those days? “I had known George previously as I was his u16 manager at Gillingham,” said Docs.

players on the coach. The gaffer made sure that every member of staff and the players enjoyed the atmosphere as we walked out onto the pitch to test if it was a mouldered or a metal stud. “It was a very special moment for myself and at the time first team captain Paul McCarthy, who also worked alongside me with the youth players in those days, to stand and watch John Akinde and Luke Moore take in the atmosphere and look for their family and friends. “These are the reasons you do youth team jobs....it was a very proud moment for Paul and I! It was a very sad day when we all heard the news of Paul McCarthy’s sad passing earlier this year, and it was the measure of the man when he allowed injured player Danny Slatter to walk up the hallowed steps and lift the trophy together.

Irish international Daish had a reputation for being a hard man - yet that day he had the biggest smile inside the stadium. Ian said, “Liam was a tough tackling defender in his day and had played at the highest level and he was sometimes known for letting his frustrations get the better of him. There had been a lot of off field problems during the season which Liam had to deal with, some of it going beyond the role of manager and when Chris scored and the final whistle went I think all that tension was released. It was a great achievement by him, Alan and Ronnie.”

“He scored for fun and always had the defenders worried. His parents were great and always followed him. I was gutted for him on the day as the Gaffer told him to warm up and the after giving him his instructions, George waited on the sideline to come on. “Unfortunately, the ball never went out of play and the game never stopped and the final whistle went without George getting on. He was clearly upset, but like a model professional he joined in the celebrations and never showed his disappointment! He is a smashing lad and I’m delighted he has had a rewarding career and look forward to seeing him again today!” We finished by asking Ian to sum up the day – smiling he said, “All I know is that be it a player, coaching staff, chairman etc... it’s a great day out… but only if you win!”

Chris McPhee was the day’s hero – scoring the only goal, but as Docs told us, it could have been so different. “Yes, he had missed a penalty earlier after Luke Moore was brought down and it was great to see him put the ball in the back of the net after a pass from the left by John Akinde. Liam and Alan went ballistic as did all the bench.”

Tuesday 3rd October Reachfields Stadium Attendance: 153 Bostik League South

THAMESMEAD TOWN Vines (88)

The Mead started October in the same way as they ended September, with a disappointing defeat – the third suffered in the last four league games on a pitch which was looking rather worse for wear! With Tom O’Connor still missing, it really wasn’t the Mead’s night as Alex Teniola proved midway through the first half as he was denied his 12th goal of the season by a post in a disappointing opening half that was only set alight just before the break when Dos Santos drove the home side in front. The Mead suffered a further blow on the stroke of half-time when Tashi-Jay Kwayie was forced off with injury. Taking the lead gave the home side the upper hand at the start of the second half and Lewis Carey was forced into a brilliant save to deny the home side before Hythe carved open the Mead’s defence again to double the lead. The Mead finally got more and more into the game and

started to create chances without really testing the Hythe keeper. Harvey Brand and Tobi Ayala combined down the right only for Paul Vines to fire at the keeper, before Vinesy went even closer as he headed Ellis Green’s free kick just over the bar. Sub Laurent Mendy burst through down the left before drilling into the side netting before the Mead finally got

on the scoresheet with two minutes left of the ninety as from Ellis’ cross, Vinesy powered home his fourth goal of the season. Sadly though it was too little too late and the home side had gained revenge for their defeat at Princes in the first week of the season

The Mead arrive at this game having lost their past two games to Greenwich Borough and Hythe Town.

In the league, Hornchurch are flying and currently sit second in the Bostik North.

Hornchurch, too need to bounce back to winning ways after their own two-game slump.

Recent CLUB HISTORY The club’s history dates back to 1923 when the team were formed as Upminster Wanderers. They played in the Romford League until 1938 when they stepped up to the Spartan League, at the same time dropping the ‘Wanderers’ from their name as an original Upminster club had folded several years earlier. When action resumed after the war Upminster were worried about a shortage of players and returned to the Romford League for 1945-46, winning the title before returning to the Spartan League. Promoted to the Premier Division in 1951, they joined the Delphian League a year later, changing their name to Hornchurch & Upminster as they prepared to move into the new Hornchurch Sports Stadium in 1952. By then, in 1959, the club had been elected to the Athenian League. They were to win the Division One championship in 1967 but were relegated in 1969 and promoted back again in 1971. In 1978, the club once again suffered relegation but three years later they were back after finishing second. Apart from a tenth-place finish out of 21 in 1995, it would be 19 years before Urchins again finished in the top half of their table. They survived several brushes with relegation before losing their Division One place in 1986 and struggled in Division Two North. Matters became even worse in 1989 when a fire destroyed the clubhouse and it took many years to recover. Inevitably, Urchins found themselves in Division Three when the regionalised divisions were scrapped in 1991. Mick Marsden was appointed manager in February 1998 and in his second season in charge of the club took them to fourth place. Second place in Division Three in 2002 brought promotion to Division One North as the league was reorganised and another runners-up spot followed in 2003 to take Urchins into the Premier Division for the first time. Much work was also done on the

near-derelict stadium, allowing the club to take its place in the new Conference South after finishing fifth in 2003-04. Under former Dagenham manager Garry Hill, the team stormed to the top of Conference South. It seemed too good to be true, and it was. On a grim Thursday in November the entire squad was released. Almost 100 players wore first-team shirts as new manager Tony Choules contrived to avert relegation despite a ten-point deduction. Indeed, without it the club would have finished in a remarkable ninth place. But the off-pitch affairs could not be resolved and the club reformed under the name AFC Hornchurch, to be placed by the FA in the Essex Senior League. Former youth manager John Lawrence took charge in 2005. A brand-new Urchins squad proceeded to run away with the championship and also won the league’s two cup competitions, becoming the first side to achieve the treble. Even so, Lawrence was replaced by former Thurrock manager Colin McBride for the return to the Ryman League and Urchins romped to a second successive title. Success continued in the Premier Division as Urchins finished fourth to secure a play-off place but lost 3-1 in the semi-final to AFC Wimbledon. The following season the Urchins were fourth going into the final day but a 2-1 defeat at Sutton meant that they finished sixth and missed the play-offs. Things were still not right off the field and manager Colin McBride took control of the club as chairman midway through the 2009-10 campaign in an effort to sort out the problems caused by the previous regime. His assistant Jimmy McFarlane took over team affairs, initially as caretaker though later to be confirmed in the job. Urchins finished ninth in the league after being in and around the play-off places throughout the season. It was a similar story in 2010-11, when Urchins were unable to sustain their play-off bid in the closing weeks

and missed out by four points, finishing tenth. But the ‘two Macs’ achieved their ambition the following season as Urchins stormed into play-off contention finishing second. Bury were beaten 3-1 in the play-off semi-finals and a tense final against Lowestoft was goalless after 90 minutes. After taking the lead in extra time only to be hauled back to level terms, Urchins snatched a 2-1 victory with a 119th-minute goal by Michael Spencer and returned to Conference South seven years after the unhappy ending to their first attempt. It proved to be a difficult season and, despite a brief flirtation with the playoff spots, six dropped points to bottom club Truro proved decisive as Urchins finished 20th, two points short of safety. Back in the Ryman League and shaking off the disappointment, Urchins enjoyed a 15-match unbeaten run early in the 2013-14 season and maintained their challenge for promotion to the very end. A poor finish to the season threatened to derail promotion hopes but Urchins scraped into fifth place and then reached the play-off final with a 1-0 victory at Kingstonian. So, for the second time in three seasons, Urchins faced Lowestoft Town in the final. This time, though, Lowestoft won 3-0. The following season started with high hopes but the club’s landlords closed the stadium to install new floodlights, forcing the first eight league games to be played away from home. Just one point came from those matches and left Urchins facing a season-long fight to avoid the drop. With six weeks to go they had finally lifted themselves out of the bottom four and looked on course for survival, only for form to desert the team completely as just two points came from the last ten games. Urchins had high hopes of regaining their Premier status quickly but it was not to be as two seasons plagued by serious injuries ended with them losing the 2016 play-off final and the 2017 play-off semi-final. Third time lucky?

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

RICHARD AVERY

In the latest of our Player Features, we’ve been talking to one of the Mead’s “new” boys who knows all about playing at Princes Park because he played here the day the ground opened back in 2006. Greenie this week has been talking to RICHARD AVERY…

PAGE 26

THAMESMEAD TOWN V AFC HORNCHURCH

> PLAYER INTERVIEW

The obvious place to start our discussion was with the start of Richard’s career – he told us: “I signed for Dartford when 17-yearsold, playing for five seasons and starting over 200-plus games for them. “In my 4th season we returned to Dartford and I was lucky enough to play in the homecoming match at Princes Park. That is my favourite memory I’ve taken from my time there. “I think that’s the game where that shirt that on the wall in Champions Bar comes from as well! As for great players, Junior Kadi is the best player I’ve played with and that’s including all the clubs I’ve been at.” Richard was OB’s skipper when he was manager at Chatham Town and we wondered what he was like as a boss. Richard thought about his answer and then sai: “OB is all about passion, commitment and hard work. That is what he demands and whether he is captain, manager or assistant, that is a constant and doesn’t change. I enjoy playing for people with that mind set because those three attributes should be the foundation for any player.” We then looked at the standard of North and South in the Isthmian League and asked Richard from his experience to compare the two. He told us: “Before this season I hadn’t played in either league for about seven years, but I used to believe that the South had more experience players that have played at a higher level and had begun to drop down the leagues but still had a lot to offer. “The North was faster and more erratic; both as tough as each other. There are teams in each league which are exceptions to this theory but that’s what I personally found.”

His recent career has taken him to East Kent and spells at Margate and Ashford United. “They are both great Kent clubs,” Richard explained: “My time at Margate was the most enjoyable of my non-league career and they are still the first team I look out for every week. They have had their challenges off the field but I’m unaware on the particulars of that.” “I only played maybe 15 games for Ashford. Similar to Margate they have had their issues off the pitch also, which as a consequence has affected the club on the pitch. I know Don (the chairman) and I respect him. He has ambition and strives to run the club as professional as he possibly can. They are a sleeping giant, we had 900+ fans I believe to our last game of the season last year, so the support is there.” “In respect of managers; at Margate I played under two extremely experienced managers in Chris Kinnear – whose Dover side today are right up there in the National League – and Terry Brown. Completely different in the way they operated, but both very successful. “I enjoyed playing under them both but especially Chris. Then Danny Lye at Ashford, who is my mate, and former teammate, and understands the game from a player’s perspective still, which is helpful, as I think when you become more experienced as a manager you possibly, naturally lose touch with that aspect slightly.” “That said, I’ve always respected Tommy as a manager, so playing for him was not a tough decision. OB was the best captain I played under, he is a natural leader, so him being here only strengthened my decision. Another influence was

locality. I work long hours now and struggle to do the miles to get to training etc. Playing at Prince’s Park is a blessing for me as it allows me to continue playing. “Cup competitions are great and the FA Trophy is no exception, but it’s incomparable to the FA Cup in my opinion. With regards to top non-league sides and how they apply themselves in the earlier rounds, I’m not sure whether they is disrespecting the competition or underestimating the opposition? “I guess resting players is probably key to their decision in fielding a ‘weakened side’. You often hear about professional players being ‘exhausted’ from tough, long season with no Christmas break and they are full time, only playing 50 odd games that year. I’ve had seasons where I’ve played 60+ games and had to work full time alongside my football commitment. As a player I think being rested on occasions is beneficial.” Finally, our “Five First’s” as we ask everyone the same five questions… First football kit bought (either for you or by you)? Charlton Athletic. First album/CD owned? I’m not sure, probably something like Eminiem when I was at school. First football match attended? England vs Brazil at Wembley in 1992. Gary Lineker missed a penalty to equal Bobby Charlton’s scoring record that Wayne Rooney recently broke. First car owned? Peugeot 206. First foreign holiday? Algarve, Portugal.

CRAIG’S CORNER <

CRAIG GIBSON THE coach

Welcome to Princes Park our new home - Jamie and Greenie have finally let me write some words for the programme, so here goes! Here we are again and a tough first round fixture in the FA Trophy versus our friends from AFC Hornchurch. The past couple of games have been a huge disappointment for all involved. Whilst Greenwich saw a lot of the ball they did not create too much trouble for Lewis while we took the lead via a great header from “Tens” in the first half & then Tobi stabbing home the rebound from Ellis Green’s penalty, 2-0 ahead on about 65 minutes. Then the wheels fell off…

PAGE 28

On Tuesday night the squad travelled to Hythe Town and came home empty handed, losing 1-2. I cannot say a lot about this game since I was spared the “delights” of the Dartford Bridge in rush hour and the Gaffer had me watching Hornchurch play out a 2-2 draw with Grays Athletic, the first points the “Urchins” have dropped so far this season. It was good to see the old boys on Tuesday and I have to welcome Jay Porter and Theo today along with Sam Mott all who have

THAMESMEAD TOWN V AFC HORNCHURCH

served Thamesmead during past seasons, we hope you do not enjoy your return today lads LOL, but good luck for the rest of your season. Finally anorak time and some FA Trophy facts for you this week:The first winners of the competition were MACCLESFIELD TOWN of the then Northern Premier League at the Old Wembley back in 1969 whilst SCARBOROUGH (1973, 1976, 1977), TELFORD UNITED (1971, 1983, 1989), and WOKING (1994, 1995, 1997) all share the record for the most victories (three) in the final.

> CRAIG’S CORNER

The most successful managers are GEOFF CHAPPLE who managed Kingstonian to victory twice & Woking three times, all within the space of seven years. MARK STIMSON became the first man to manage a Trophy winning team in three successive seasons, when he led Grays Athletic to victory in 2005 & 2006 and Stevenage Borough in 2007. Maybe 2017 will be the “Meads” year? Let us hope we can put in a performance today an progress in the trophy, we need to work hard, stay together and work harder. Enjoy the game today.
