THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

STEVE HOUSHAM May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Spennymoor Town to the Eon Visual Media Stadium this evening, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome back for another home game and welcome to a former team mate of mine Jason Ainsley and his Spennymoor side. Jason has done a fantastic job in getting Spennymoor up the football ladder, they have a good start this season and will be another tough test for us tonight. We should take confidence into the game following Saturday’s performance, although it was another defeat, the players gave their all. But yet again it was the same story with one lack of concentration conceding the first goal and quality and belief, or lack of, in the final third costing us anything out of the game. To be fair, we’ve got two full-backs who aren’t full-backs and they are going a great job for us. I’m proud of every single one of them and I‘ve said to them after the Chorley game, that’s probably the best performance of the season. The work rate that they showed was unbelievable again and it was just that little bit of luck and we know what we need and we’ve just got to try cut out these silly mistakes. Their second goal comes from us trying to push on trying to get something out of the game. If I’m being right to the people that were here and, some people might disagree, but I think the better team lost, if I’m being honest. We were the ones that was trying to pass it about, but yet again the quality let’s us down. I can’t fault the lads for their effort, though. We hope to have some new faces on board

hopefully for tonight’s game, as we have picked up yet another injury with Joe Pugh who damaged his knee in the game and could be on the sidelines for some weeks. As always we will be going out onto the pitch to give everything we got to get out of the position we are in keep up your support and keep believing. Up the Villagers! THE CAPTAIN

THE CAPTAIN Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Spennymoor Town in the National League North. Since these last notes, we took on Chorley and we put in a good performance, but just fell short. Chorley are a decent team and having made the play-off final last year it was always going to be tough, but I thought the lads gave everything and played well even though we lost the game 2-0. They just seemed to have that bit extra up top which made the difference in the end. We have another home game tonight and, with the same commitment, I’m sure we will pick some points up against a good Spennymoor Town team who have started well. Personally I’m hoping to be back soon not sure on a date yet but not far off now. Stephen Brogan First-Team Captain

THE OPPOSITION

SPENNYMOOR TOWN

North Ferriby United will be looking to bounce back from their 2-0 loss to Chorley at the weekend when Spennymoor Town come to the Eon Visual Media Stadium tonight. The Moors have hit a bit of a blip in their season after starting with three wins on the trot over Stockport County, FC United Of Manchester and Bradford Park Avenue. However, of late, the club are without a win in their past five league match. That said, they have registered draws 1-1 draws with Salford City, Darlington

and Gainsborough Trinity, but they will feel this is a good opportunity to address their two-game losing slump. Spennymoor fell to their second consecutive defeat last time out after Bradley Reid’s header and a double from Darryl Knight sealed a 3-1 win for Tamworth. The loss means Spennymoor are without a win in five games since a 3-0 victory at Boston United on August 22nd. With both teams needing the victory to aid their confidence it should result in an entertaining spectacle. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

SPENNYMOOR TOWN

RECENT HISTORY The 2013 – 14 started where we left off with the club retaining the Cleator Cup against Whitley Bay. Following the very late end of the previous season, preparations for the new season had to be rushed which affected form to some extent and the team suffered an early defeat away to West Auckland. With the emergence of Celtic Nation, Marske’s early form along with Shildon putting up a strong team it was clear from the start that the push for promotion was not going to be easy. However defeats in the FA Cup and FA Vase spurred the team on to a 23-game unbeaten run to finally overhaul the points total set by Celtic Nation when the club clinched the league title for the fourth time in five years. The club are now looking forward to starting life in the Evo-Stik Division One in the 2014 – 15 season with the first phase of the clubs ambition to achieve three promotions in five years complete. At the start of the 2014 – 15 season, the first in the Evo-Stik league, the club chairman Brad Groves set out the targets for the year. These were to have a good run in the FA Cup and FA Trophy and to reach the play-offs. In the FA Cup following wins over Tadcaster, Bishop Auckland and Dunston, Moors were drawn at home against Telford of the Conference. Moors were two goals up going into extra time when the referee somehow found eight minutes of added time to everyone’s disbelief, which allowed Telford time to draw level in front of an 863 strong crowd. Telford were too strong in the midweek replay though we did feature in the first round draw. In the FA Trophy the Moors made it through to the first round and were the lowest placed club in the competition at that stage. A lacklustre performance saw the club lose away to Hyde in December. The first game in the league saw us drawn away to Padiham in Lancashire where a positive start gained the first points of the campaign. The season saw some excellent victories both home and away and the club finished fifth to claim a play-off place. The play-off game against Darlington saw Spennymoor 2–1 up with 5 minutes to go, but two Darlington substitutes made the difference with two very late goals to seal the victory. All in all it was a very successful season for

Spennymoor with all of the targets met. Moors started the 2015/16 season with a tough away game against league newcomers Glossop and would go on to face them in two FA Trophy games just a few weeks later. The early part of the league season saw mixed fortunes with some solid victories, but a number or draws meant the club were always hovering on the edge of the play-offs with Warrington and Northwich Victoria heading the division by a number of points. Following a heavy defeat to Farsley a change of the management team followed by a few new signings saw the Moors go on a fantastic 21-game unbeaten league run which lasted until the middle of April when we came up against Northwich. The run and a 9-point deduction for Northwich was enough to secure second place in the league and ensured home advantage for both the semi and subsequent final of the play-offs. The semi final saw the Moors come through with a 3-1 victory over Burscough and faced Northwich Victoria on 30th April following their victory over Glossop NE. Having lost to Northwich only 2 weeks previously the game shaped up to be a nervy affair but with Gavin Cogdon scoring in what turned out to be his last game in a Moors shirt the promotion to the Premier Division was sealed. The Northern Premier League Premier Division was a tough slog for Moors, regularly facing three games in seven days and long away trips around the country. Some high-profile new additions to the team resulted in the Club entering the new season with an air of expectancy. But a shock 3-1 defeat on the opening day away to Hednesford served as a useful wakeup call. The team followed it with a seven-game unbeaten run, which included the beginnings of a historic FA Cup run which saw them reach the first round proper. The cup run had distracted somewhat from the league campaign and it took a good few weeks for Spennymoor to regain their form. A late season charge saw them finish second in the league to overcome Nantwich and eventually Stourbridge in the Playoffs and seal Moors’ spot in the National League North – the highest level in the club’s history. Lowson is now in his third season at the club and was rewarded with a new contract this summer after a string of consistent performances. Dan shot to worldwide fame in 2016 when he scored from his own box in the FA Cup. The goal was voted Goal of the Season 2016/17 by Spennymoor fans.

This will be Kallum’s ninth season with Spennymoor, where he has made himself one of the first names on the team sheet at right-back. Last season’s ‘Supporters’ Player of the Year’, he was also picked in the League XI for the Northern Premier League Premier Division.

JOSEPH TAIT

ROBERT RAMSHAW

A huge character and leader on and off the pitch, Joe has become a firm fan-favourite at The Brewery Field after a number of goals. He hit 13 goals last season, despite facing a period out of the team and has scored a total of 43 goals in 138 appearances for Spennymoor Town.

Robert Ramshaw Joined in the summer of 2016 from Gateshead, where he made more than 100 appearances in the Conference. He scored the goal that clinched the play-off final win, taking a pass in his stride before smashing into the top corner with his unfavoured left foot – a goal of the season.

THE OPPOSITION

ANDREW JOHNSON

JAMIE CHANDLER

CHRISTOPHER MASON

This will be Andrew’s second season with Spennymoor after joining from Northern League Ashington last season. It’s easy to see why he was their captain as played a starring role. The 31-year-old was touted by many clubs at this level, before he decided to join The Moors last season.

The all-action midfielder starting his career with Sunderland and being capped by England at youth level, Jamie joined The Moors in the summer of 2016 from Gateshead, where he made 168 appearances in the Conference and scored 20 goals.

Club Captain and stalwart, Chris has completed over 300 appearances for the Moors. He moved to Sweden to play for Ostavalls, before his return in July 2009. Along with Kallum Griffiths, Mason holds legendary status in Spennymoor for his role in the 2013 FA Vase victory.

GLEN TAYLOR Starting his third season at Spennymoor, Glen is a big, strong, and technically adept goal scorer who is a former FA Vase winner with Whitley Bay and scored more than 100 goals for Ashington. He grabbed the headlines during last season, when he scored 19 goals to finish top of the pile for Moors.

GRAEME ARMSTRONG Prolific striker Armstrong joined in the summer of 2016 after winning back-to-back promotions with Darlington 1883. The 33-year-old is a vastly experienced target man after starting out with Scottish side Annan Athletic, before he joined Dunston and became their record goalscorer.

DAVID DOWSON Former Sunderland forward David joined from Darlington 1883 in February 2016 after spending three seasons and winning two promotions with The Quakers, where he scored 48 goals in 100 appearances after joining from Durham City. His tireless energy causes problems for any defence. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

MATCH Bobby JOHNSON

Saturday 9 September 2017 | Eon Visual Media Stadium | Att: 220 It was another frustrating day for injuryravaged Ferriby. They had to field the only 16 fit players they had. All considered, this was a decent performance but, once again, they finished goalless and pointless. The Villagers opened brightly, but Chorley stunned them with a goal after just three minutes. Ferriby lost possession in midfield and Chorley broke quickly in what was their first real attack. Jason Walker cut in from the right and fired a low shot past Ross Durrant. Akeel Francis responded for Ferriby with a shot that was held by keeper Matt Urwin. Ferriby were grateful to Durrant for a good blocking save from an Adam Blakeman shot and then Mark Gray did well to block a goal-bound shot. Joe Pugh and Curtis Bateson both went close for Ferriby, but it was the visitors who came closest to a goal with a Marcus Carver shot that hit a post. The second-half belonged to Chorley. Ferriby had one on-target shot in the 90th minute and that was really the only threat they could manage. They did, on occasion, force Chorley’s backfour to play hurriedly. However, With Carver, Jake Cottrell and Walker showing pace and movement, Chorley always looked dangerous up-front. To be fair to Ferriby, their back-four did play well against some quality players Simon Russell had a shot blocked, as Ferriby looked for the equaliser, but the main threats came from the visitors. Blakeman had three efforts go off-target 12

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

and Marcus Carver missed a good chance from 16 yards. Substitute Josh Wilson scored the clinching goal from close range after Andy Teague played the ball back to him. It was no more than Chorley deserved. Teague was magnificent in the centre of the visitors’ defence. He held them together when Ferriby did threaten and he organised the side well and missed very little in the air and on the ground. Callum Rzonca, Bobby Johnson and Russell worked hard in midfield. However, there was little good ball for the strikers to feed on. Francis was often found foraging for the ball 25 or 30 yards from goal when The Villagers really needed his presence closer to goal. Manager Steve Housham commented, “I thought that this was perhaps our best performance of the season. We worked hard and produced some good football. However, in the end, Chorley just had that bit more quality than we had. “Their first goal was disappointing. It came from a break in midfield when we lost the ball. They made the most of it and took the chance well. “We are, perhaps, a little too ‘nice’ at times. We don’t have the tallest attack and we get bullied off the ball.” Assistant manager Darryn Stamp said, “We know our biggest problem is scoring. We often blame defenders for errors that lead to goal,s but the strikers also have to take responsibility. “Once we start scoring we will start to take some of the pressure off the defence.”
