THE BOARDROOM

PAUL

BOWDENBROWN

May I welcome the Officials, Players and Supporters of both Bury and AFC Hornchurch FC to our home at SCT. I’m welcoming our final two opponents before Christmas at the same time due to printing deadlines and time constraints at this time of year leading to our programme editors deciding to print a double programme. So I hope that after an enjoyable game - either on Saturday afternoon or Monday evening - everyone had a safe journey home. May I also personally take this opportunity to welcome all those local residents’ who have joined us as “new” supporters this season - some by joining our £30 family season ticket initiative this season. I know a lot of people have said it’s just a gimmick but to be honest my main reason for thinking of such a community scheme initiative was not financially based but purely aimed to allow local residents the opportunity to join us here at the SCT on match days and to watch their local football club! So may I thank you all for your continued support because we love to see you all grown-ups and children wearing the green and white at our matches.

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

As you probably know, I have not been around SCT since early November, due to my spinal surgery and subsequent recuperation (which I am midway through at this time according to those medical minds that know better than myself) But I feel I am on the mend and the pain medication is working and allowing me now to drive and although I never have really taken my hand off the tiller, I feel that the time is right for me to return, and today’s match is the first step of that progress. At this point I would like to thank all of those that have done that bit extra whilst I have not been around the club in person your support was very much appreciated. I have always confirmed within my previous programme notes that my target for the club this season (as I had agreed with my first-team manager) was the Play-offs and after the first couple of months’ games, we were well on target but recently we have had a very challenging and disappointing run of results; at one point I believe 3 points out of a possible 15 and I am sure I will be corrected if I am incorrect by the editors!

Now I know it will be said we have had a few injuries to key players that has kept them out of action for long periods, but that is a fact of non-league football - injuries cannot be helped! But the second and more important fact in my opinion, is the number of bookings the club has received. Club discipline must be controlled and I feel that this area needs a lot of immediate attention by all on and off the field. I would rather it be dealt with by the management team but be assured if it does not improve I will get involved myself because in the end, it is the club that will be hit with its own fines for the lack of proper discipline by the FA, as the direct results of either stupidity by the players on the pitch together with overzealous referees, we as a club this month will suffer with the loss of a number of key players. Therefore, the foundation of all my conversations recently with my manager, was asking why do we find ourselves in the position we are in the league at this time, and what are we going to do about it, or I should say what he is going to do about it.

THE BOARDROOM

I note whilst I have been away he has bought a number of new players into the squad and I would like to belatedly welcome these players to the club.

staff as well as all operational activities of the club. So if it becomes necessary I will do whatever I feel best for the club as I certainly do not like spending money just for the sake of it!

Naturally we have lost some players and I would also like to thank them for their input whilst playing in the club’s shirt and representing this fine old club.

Whilst recuperating, last week I met with Duncan Evans , the Director of SCL our Academy’s education supplier -Ian Docker our Academy Manager joining me - and it was great to actually understand the workings of that side of running the academy away from the football related responsibilities.

In my experience Christmas time is a time for Chairmen to reflect on the previous four months’ worth of football and then forecasting on the remaining four - usually in consultation with the manager decisions are made resulting in either amendments being made from the original targets when it becomes apparent the club are not going to meet those targets on the field, which can result in the players wage bill being reduced which normally results in a movement of players from the club so the manager can manage his budget. I have always dealt with matters differently at Christmas, as I have never been known to be a defeatist! I therefore look at the problem in a different way always being rationally rather than just firing from the hip, because I find decisions made in haste can sometimes back fire on you! So yes of course, I am worried about the position we find ourselves in but at this time, my season end targets are still the Play-offs and its down to me to support my manager to ensure that these targets are met. But if results continue to be disappointing, even with my continued support, you would all expect the Chairman to try rectify the problem by whatever means at his disposal, because lets be fair, he is the one funding the whole of the playing

It made me that much more determined that we will make a success of running our academy. Yes, we have had problems from the moment the transfer from our landlords took place such as extra costs appearing, but I feel now we know what we are doing and we have a clear picture for the future. Our partnership with SCL is stronger than ever and there is no reason why next year, we can turn the whole business around to benefit all parties but especially and most importantly, our students, and hopefully we will bring players through to play in the first-team. So I must thank both Duncan and his staff from SCL for their contribution to date - it is very much appreciated. I have also recently had a detailed discussion with Ian regarding the whole structure of the club below the first-team. And to this end, I have initiated discussions with a local League Club to see if there is the opportunity that we both can form a partnership that will benefit all parties which will result in a very strong framework within that section in my view the future of the club. Hopefully we will find common ground within these discussions that will take this initiative forward resulting in actions

rather than words. Before I go, I’d just like to remind you that the club have entered into our own SKY business contract. So in future on our big screen within the Mead Bar, we will be showing all the matches screened by SKY Sports. So if you’re reading this on Saturday, we have the relegation battle between Newcastle and Villa for you after our Bury match, whilst on Monday there the game from the other end of the Premier League as Man City go to Arsenal. So why not come that bit earlier or stay for a while after the game and watch a match whilst having a snack because as you know I think the SCT serve up the best food - especially their chips and just lately a great selection of pies all prepared for healthy eating. And my finally this Festive Season I’d like to wish everyone associated with the club in all capacities - players (senior, academy and youth), team management throughout the club and our valued volunteers (we have so many of these) not forgetting all of our supporters (who follow us through thick and thin win or lose); all of our opponents; our landlords and their staff that look after all of us on match days so well and proficiently; and last but by no means least Thomas Bowden-Brown (my grandson) who is hopefully joining his old Grandad (known to him affectionately as Grandad Beard) at our Hornchurch contest on Monday night A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL! THE PEABODY TRUST

STEPHEN

HOWLETT 2015 has been a busy year, both on and off the pitch at Sporting Club Thamesmead. Thamesmead Town FC’s historic match – their 30th anniversary game and first international game against Jersey Football Association - attracted 500 spectators, the club’s biggest crowd yet. With a final score of 3-1, it was a great home win for Thamesmead. It was a pleasure to play a small part in the celebrations and present the winners with the Peabody trophy. Off the pitch, hundreds of you took part in activities at Sporting Club’s summer fun day, taking the opportunity to get active and use the club’s first class leisure facilities. Over the last 12 months, there have been more opportunities than ever before to get fit, be active, go outdoors and take part in a range of leisure activities across Thamesmead. In the summer the Thamesmead Arts Festival showcased local talent, and this autumn more than 100 people took part in Thamesmead’s first ever 5k run, raising money for Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice. Applications for next year’s 5k open in January, so keep us in mind if you’re thinking about making a healthy new year’s resolution. And throughout the year more than 1,500 of you took part in Now’s the Time Thamesmead which we fund with our partners

at Sport England, London Borough of Bexley and Royal Borough of Greenwich, and is supported by Charlton Athletic Community Trust, to provide affordable activities such as family Zumba, running, football, boxercise and keep fit classes. We know that part of enjoying where you live comes from having access to clean, tidy, safe, outdoor places where you can enjoy going for a walk, playing with your friends and family or taking a breath of fresh air. With 150 hectares of green open space, Thamesmead has double the average amount of green open space per person. As part of our plans to make Thamesmead a great place to live, work and visit, Peabody is already investing in the parks, play spaces and Thamesmead’s unique waterways to improve your experience of living here.

significant improvements to local neighbourhoods - we planted 5000 shrubs, replaced 200 lights and cleaned the canals. We’ve also transformed part of the Lesnes to Crossness park by improving paths, installing play equipment for toddlers to teenagers, and creating places to sit and enjoy the views across Southmere Lake. This is only the beginning. Thamesmead is one of Peabody’s top priorities and we’ve been listening to what’s important to you too, so that we can make this a place that you’re happy to call home. May I wish you every success with today’s match and take this opportunity to wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy 2016! Stephen Howlett Chief Executive, Peabody

THE ACADEMY

THE

ACADEMY

Well Christmas is upon us and may I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! The Academy lads played Hastings United last Wednesday afternoon and sadly lost 3-2 after being 2-0 up. They played some really good football at times, but lost discipline and shape for the last 20 minutes and in the end some sloppy defending cost them the result. These are things they must learn if they are going to step up to u21s and first team, with George Jeffrey and Ajibola Lawal scoring our goals! Our other Academy team played

08

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

Cray Wanderers on Friday which was also the last day of term before Chirstmas, and I’ll tell you about that game next time as printing deadlines dictate that these notes have been written before. The Academy continues to move forward and we are really trying to push the recruitment side and both the Chairman and I are meeting lots of people to assist us in making this an Academy to come and be involved with. With that in mind, I’m pleased to announce that our first trial for next season will be held here at then SCT on MONDAY 15th

FEBRUARY. So if you are a budding footballer who’d like to find out more please go to the website of our main education partners - SCL - at www. wearescl.co.uk/thamesmead-fc Finally this Festive season, my thanks to Mike Green, Phil Messenger, Craig Gibson and Steve Rous for their hard work and effort so far this season! Good luck to Terry and the lads this weekend! Yours in sport, Ian Docker Academy Manager

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK

FROM THE SECRETARY’S DESK Welcome to SCT for our last two home matches of 2015, both tough games against two teams going really well in the league. Both will give us a stern test at this time of the season. A good result against Barkingside two weeks ago lifted spirits a little to come away from there with a 5-2 victory was much needed by Terry and the lads. We had no fixture last Saturday as our scheduled opponents Tilbury were in Trophy action and our match last Tuesday at Haringey Borough fell foul to the weather

again! As we go into the New Year there is no doubt that we are not placed in the league table where we would like to have been, a run of defeats has all but seen us out of the play-off zone, and although we have games in hand on some of the sides above us we face a run of tough matches including our “local” derby against newly promoted Phoenix Sports on January 2nd which should be an interesting match. We are bringing players in to give us options as manager Terry Spillane tries to rekindle our

season, players will also move on, hopefully we can put a run together and get back into the play-offs which was our aim back in August when the season started and remains that. May I close this year’s final column in wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a very happy and prosperous New Year and thank you all for your support. Enjoy the games. Dave Joy Club Secretary

TERESA PEARCE

TERESA

PEARCE Here we are in December, already! Can you believe it? Christmas just a week away! There probably isn’t another time in the year so closely associated with the family as Christmas. All over the world families will be journeying to be together and to share special moments. And it made me think how much like a family a football club is. From the players on and off the field; to the management team; to the owners and directors; to the people behind the scenes, and of course the supporters!

Just like a family, a football club has good times and bad, hopes and fears, rain and shine. But at the core is a bond of loyalty and love that carries on no matter what. Thamesmead Town is our local footballing family and we all come together to celebrate that special feeling that is the Mead, remembering the highlights of the year gone by, and trying not to remember some moments! And as we look ahead to the coming year, let’s hope to welcome in new family members and good times that we can all share!

At a time when football is taking some stick, let’s not forget what a special force for good the beautiful game is. What other activity could bring two opposing forces out of the trenches together on Christmas Day for a kick about in the midst of one of the bloodiest wars in history. I wish you all and your own families a Peaceful Christmas and a Happy New Year – oh and plenty of points for the Mead of course! RT HON TERESA PEARCE MP

Sealed with a shake: Teresa Pearce shakes the hand of Paul Bowden-Brown at the Romford game after accepting the role of honorary patron of Thamesmead Town Football Club. 12

FEATURE INTERVIEW

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

JACK BARRY This evening, Mike Green talks to one of the summer signings, Jack Barry, about his career, hopes and life at the Mead as he takes his turn in Greenie’s Hotseat. 14

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

FEATURE INTERVIEW

Jack Barry only joined the Mead at the start of the current season and is already a firm favourites with the home faithful. Today we talk to Jack about his influences, his career so far and his hopes for the future... Jack started by telling us that from an early age, it was always going to be football for him. “Well all my family are big sports fans and obviously there first choice of sport is football and I’ve always had the passion and the love for the game ever since I was a kid, it was the only thing I knew growing up. As a kid growing up all I ever done was play football I wasn’t really interested in school etc I more interested in the school bell ringing so I could go out and play football with my friends.” With that in mind, its not difficult to work out who Jack has to thank for his football life as his Mum and Dad. “The biggest influence on my career would have to be me my parents but to be honest they have taken me everywhere to play football and always supported me in my decisions and always given me the best advice possible. To many when he was named skipper at his first club Romford, it was a big surprise to many but Jack soon won over his doubters as he explained. He told us “Yeah I was skipper at Romford for three seasons which was quite an achievement for myself at taking the armband of a semi-professional team at the age of 21/22!” Jack went onto 228 appearances for the club taking him to 4th in all time appearances for the Essex club. “I felt the time was right to move on after a very poor season with Romford last year as we was fighting relegation but I could of easily given up then and moved on like other players had done but that’s not in me to do that so I decided to stay and made sure the club stayed up.”

But what sort of player really is Jack Barry? “I’ve always been a versatile player but obviously midfield would be my preferred option as you get on the ball more and you can make a real impact on the game. When ever I have played midfield I’ve always added goals to my game so I would say I would prefer playing in the middle but centre half isn’t to bad I guess.” And away from football? “By trade I am an Electrician but now I am a manager of a maintenance company called MITIE based in London. I have a girlfriend so I spend the majority of my time with her going out and doing things together however I also have a big group of mates so we like to go out and have a laugh.” Jack had a firm view on how technology could change football

today! “I would bring in the technology we see in rugby/tennis as that’s where we are in this era now and times have moved on and things happen that officials cannot see, with the amount of cameras around football grounds now they catch everything that happens and will help the officials out in making decisions if they are needed to be made!” “My hopes for the Mead this season are to get promoted and that’s it, we all believe in what we can achieve at this club so now it’s down to us as a team to hit the heights we can and get promoted. We started very well in the league but have hit a bit of a blip but there is nothing to worry about and they can sit sight for the rest of the season as we will make them proud and keep on winning!” “Merry Christmas everyone!”

BURY TOWN

CLUB INFO Nickname: The Blues Founded: 1872 Ground: Ram Meadow Chairman: Russell Ward Manager: Ben Chenery Last Season: 24th (Premier Division)

Bury Town suffered relegation last season and will be looking to bounce back at the first time of asking but currently find themselves in 7th position in the standings. Despite this the club has up to four games in hand over opponents above them and if they pick up all three points in these fixtures it could propel them well into the Play-offs - hot on the heels of automatic promotion to boot. Their promotion aspirations have taken a hit coming into December with the club losing 3-0 to AFC Hornchurch and only drawing 1-1 against Cheshunt. Sandwiched in between the side exited the FA Trophy losing 2-1 to Dulwich Hamlet so the league can tale full focus. The Mead will have to be at their best if they are to overcome Bury Town but they themselves ended their rotten run of form in comprehensive style beating Barkingside 5-2.

AFC HORNCHURCH

CLUB INFO Nickname: The Urchins Founded: 2005 Ground: Hornchurch Stadium Chairman: Colin McBride Manager: Jimmy McFarlane Last Season: 23rd (Premier Division)

The games don’t get any easier for Thamesmead as they take on AFC Hornchurch with the Urchins sitting in fourth in the division. Hornchurch, like Bury Town, were relegated last season and look on course for a Play-off position at the least having picked up 49 points from their 24 games. The club could close the gap at the top, held by Cray Wanderers, to just two points if they win their two games in hand over the table toppers. The club have had mixed form of late with draws against Brightlingsea Regent and Harlow Town before losing to Thurrock. The Urchins bounced back with three points over fellow relegated side Bury Town in a 3-0 win before slumping to a 1-0 defeat against lowly Heybridge Swifts.

FEATURE INTERVIEW

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

JAY PORTER Our second special interview in our Seasonal Special edition of The Mead is with one of the Mead’s most consistent performers this season - JAY PORTER 26

THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme

FEATURE INTERVIEW

We started our chat at the beginning and asked Jay where and how it all started for him. He told us, “Started football when I was 4 years old after my dad took me on a Sunday morning to a local football team called Fleetdown United. My Dad has been one of the biggest influences in my career as he has helped me get to and from football, and helped support me financially. Alongside that a coach I played under when I was at Dartford as helped me progress as a player.” Jay’s progression was helped by a period in the United States. “I spent 5 months in the state of Maryland were I played soccer and carried on with further education. When I was over in

the states was fortunate to meet some great people and make some life long friends. Enjoying the American culture can say that this is one of the best experiences of my life so far.” “Some of the best opponents I have played against was when I was at Dartford we played in a pre-season friendly against Reading. This was a big test for me and here I found some of the best opponents I have come up against. I prefer to play left-back because I enjoy doing both getting forward and defending and therefore feel I am more affective as a left back than a left midfielder.” Away from football, Jay is something of a socialite. “Currently working for a

company called AJS, and one of the things I like doing away from football is going out with friends. Also like to go on holiday during the out of season period,” he admitted. Looking ahead, Jay is certain of his aims for the rest of this season. “I hope that for the rest of this season, the Mead keep progressing through the league and a minimum requirement to be making Play Offs when the season has finished. For Christmas this year there is nothing specific on my wish list, but I would like to wish all the staff and players at Thamesmead town all the best for the season and let’s get to were we deserve to be!”

PLAYER OF THE MONTH

PLAYER OF THE MONTH AWARD

NOVEMBER’S WINNER

Lewis Dark At the end of each month throughout the 2015/16 season, Terry Spillane and the management team will nominate the best first team player to receive the Morgan Player of the Month award. Thamesmead Town are delighted to welcome The Morgan Public House into our family here, especially to manager Scott for kindly agreeing to sponsor the award. “We only opened in the summer of 2015, and we’re delighted to join the Thamesmead family. We’d like to wish the club all the success for the coming season, and we look forward to welcoming both players and supporters into The Morgan over the months ahead,” he told The Mead. Situated less than five minutes from Sporting Club Thamesmead on the A2016 in Belvedere, The Morgan is 28

the perfect place to dine and relax. It boasts a varied and extensive menu with a superb daily carvery right at the heart what they do. The carvery is freshly prepared and offers a choice of three succulent meats carved by their friendly chefs, temptingly displayed alongside a wide range of seasonal vegetables and homemade Yorkshire puddings. At the bar you can choose from a superb selection of cask ales from Marston’s’ five breweries, a great wine list featuring choices from the distinguished Rothschild wineries, as well as an impressive range of ciders, soft drinks and spirits.

MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD

MAN OF THE MATCH AWARD Once again, we’re delighted that Erica Cooper and her daughter Charlotte are generously sponsoring our Man of the Match award this year.

Throughout the 2015/16 season, Thamesmead Town will once again be presenting the Mead Man of the Match award after each home game. Again, we are indebted to Erica Cooper and her daughter, Charlotte, for donating the prize to the club. This year, the awarding of the prize will take place on the pitch as the Mead leave the field. So hang around for a few minutes at the end of the game to see who is the recipient of the Cooper Man of the Match award. COMMERCIAL CORNER

COMMERCIAL NEWS

with Mike Green

Well that was the year... As 2015 comes to a close leaving us reflecting on the past 12 months and its only when you sit down and look at where we were as a club as we approached Christmas 2014, the strides that the club has made over the past 12 months really are something to behold. As we go into our final home games of the year - and isn’t it nice to finally have a home Saturday league game for the first time since October 24th EIGHT weeks ago, and in that time you don’t need me to tell you that we’ve had just ONE home League game! All in all, it must be Christmas... Firstly a warm welcome to our visiting supporters - from deepest Suffolk and from just across the other side of the Dartford Bridge as Bury Town and AFC Hornchurch come a visiting the SCT. A huge thank you to our two match sponsors this weekend. On Saturday when we host Bury Town, its a very warm welcome back to the SCT for the club’s Patron - the Rt Hon TERESA PEARCE MP. It’ll be good to see Teresa again and the rest of her party, and a big thank you to her for enabling us to reduce the admission prices against Bury on what is traditionally one of the worst attended weekends of the season. A big thank you Teresa - its great to see you again! And on Monday, its a welcome to a

new sponsor as we welcome Nim Bhadare and his party from ABBEY WOOD STATION CABS to the SCT. We’ve been talking to Nim for several months about his increasing support of the club and that will continue into 2016 - I hope. You’ll see of course that AWSC have a pitch side advertising banner and from today will have a programme advert as well. Again a huge thanks to Nim and we hope that tonight is just the start of a successful ongoing partnership. Another new long term programme advert also continues tonight as ANDERTON CONCRETE PRODUCTS have followed up their recent sponsorship of our London Senior Cup tie with AFC Wimbledon with an ad for the remainder of this season at least. A big thanks to Keith Jones for his help with this one!

And don’t forget with the Big Day next Friday, you can get your last minute Mead gifts from the Club Shop today... As we move into 2016, we’ve lots of plans in the pipeline which we’ll keep you all posted on and don’t forget, if you want to sponsor a

game or your Mead favourite, or advertise your business, simply get in touch with me on a match day or by the phone number or email address elsewhere on this page. Just enough room left for me to wish you all a MERRY CHRISTMAS and A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

THE CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

CLEAN SHEET CHALLENGE

8

CLEAN SHEET TOTAL Following the success of last season’s Clean Sheet Challenge, the club is delighted that once again this season we are seeking your support to raise money for charity, but this year we’re doing it for two charities rather than just one! Last season, Rob Budd and Vicente Mansanet between them kept 14 clean sheets as we raised money for Cancer Research UK – the final total will be revealed soon, and it is worth waiting for! Throughout this season, we’re delighted once again to be working with our friends from Cancer Research, but we will also be raising funds for London’s Air Ambulance, the registered charity that delivers an advanced trauma team to critically injured people in London in a bright red helicopter! We’ll learn more about what the LAA do in an upcoming programme. If you want to contribute - and we hope that you will - we’re in the process of setting up a Just Giving web page for this season, or alternatively there’s always the old fashioned way of filling out the sponsorship form that you’ll find in the boardroom! 34
