CLUB INFORMATION

The side put successive play-off disappointments behind them and won the Northern Premier League Premier Division by two points. Their success was no fluke either with the club racking up the best defensive record in the league and had the fourth best attack seeing them lose only six times. FC United of Manchester, after 12 games in their new league, sit in 15th place on 14 points scoring 16 goals whilst conceding 20. After a shaky opening few games picking up only one points from their first four games they found a string a form. A 3-2 home win over Brackley Town was followed by another victory over Hednesford Town. Their home fixture against Curzon Ashton saw a thrilling 3-3 game played out before the club returned to winning ways with back-to-back wins over Lowestoft Town and Corby Town.

Luke Ashworth

James Knowles

Carnell stepped up and made the number one jersey his own in early 2014 with some great performances which formed part of United’s amazing run in the final few months of that season.

Arrived from Hyde at the beginning of last season and is a dependable central defender who has Football League experience at Leyton Orient and Rotherham United after coming through the youth ranks at Wigan Athletic.

An experienced defender signed from Bradford Park Avenue who brings great leadership qualities to the team, was the captain for Avenue when they beat FC in the play-off final in 2012.

Chris Lynch

Position: Defence

Position: Goalkeeper

Dean Stott

Position: Defence Former club captain and is just as effective in midfield or defence. He takes a good penalty as well and has also been known to score from the half-way line.

Liam Brownhill

Position: Defence Liam is strong in defence and has a great ability to float dangerous balls in from set pieces and was named in the 2014-15 Evostik side of the year and current vice-captain of the club

Position: Defence

Position: Defence

In his second season with FC United, cultured central defender Lynch joined the club from Southport in October 2014. The 24-year-old has made 32 appearances for the club scoring three goals.

Alan Thurston

Position: Defence

Previously with Fylde for the past couple of years, versatile Thurston can play at full-back or in midfield. Adam started off as a junior at Manchester United so comes with a good pedigree.

ONE TO WATCH: JEROME WRIGHT Club captain and United’s record appearance maker with 335 games for the club at the start of the season. His pace and ability to make things happen on the left flank mean that ‘United’s own’ is a key member of the team. Named in the 2014-15 Evostik league side of the year. FC United of Manchester

CLUB HISTORY FC United of Manchester were formed in 2005 and since then the club has continued to go from strength to strength both on and off the pitch. “The club set up in protest to Malcolm Glazer’s takeover of Manchester United” is a statement often used to describe FC United. But while there is no doubt that FC would not have happened without the American megalomaniac’s invasion, it was the catalyst, the final straw, but not the sole reason. The steering group did an amazing job in a short space of time

including the appointment of the club’s first manager Karl Marginson. Only a fortnight old, the club played its first game at Leigh on 16 July 2005 in front of an official crowd of 2,552. It ended with an exuberant pitch invasion and players, new heroes, being carried off shoulder high. Probably the first time such jubilant scenes had been witnessed after a goalless friendly. FC United secured a ground share with Bury FC at Gigg Lane and successfully applied for membership of the North West Counties Football League. The fledgling club made its debut in division two at Leek CSOB.

From that rain soaked competitive debut in August right through to the end-of-season party in April which saw more than 6,000 people turn up to see the Reds lift the title, an unbelievable amount of fun was had at every game. There were unforgettable days, such as Blackpool where Bloomfield Road saw its biggest away following for 20 years when more than 4,000 Reds made the seaside trip. The club even had an end of season Euro away to Germany to face FC Lokomotiv Leipzig. Next season with the league and cup double secured, FC then made a raid on the UniBond Division One North title as well as entering the FA Cup for the first time. After a disappointing start to the season, the Reds fought back against the backdrop of a succession of injuries, suspensions and a criminally ridiculous fixture pile up which saw United playing every other day to find themselves in the promotion play-off places. United missed out on the league title by just one point to Bradford

Park Avenue. The Reds were a side full of confidence though and they beat Bamber Bridge 3-2 in the play-off semi-final to set up a showdown against Skelmersdale United. After falling behind early on, the Reds battled back to a 4-1 win sealing a place in the UniBond Premier and a hat-trick of promotions. Despite a slow start to the season heading into 2009 and United’s form was improving but with 48 points from 32 games and only 10 games remaining, anything other than a mid-table finish looked like a big ask. United were also without the services of 24-goal Kyle Wilson, whose season had been cut short by a knee injury. But FC went on a remarkable run of seven wins and two draws to start the final day of the season as favourites to clinch the final play-off spot. Spurred on by the season’s biggest crowd of 3,718 noisy supporters, United looked to be heading for the play-offs with a 1-0 lead but Bradford equalised with seven minutes remaining. Kendal were drawing 2-2 and FC would still have gone through had the scores remained that way but Kendal scored in the 88th minute to break FC United hearts.

Boston United gained promotion via the play-offs.

down 1-0 to miss out on promotion again.

The 2010-11 season will primarily be remembered for the FA Cup run, which saw United reach the second round following a famous victory over League One side Rochdale.

On the pitch last season, FC made it to their third successive play-off final following a scintillating semi-final win at home to Witton Albion. But yet again the club lost in the final, this time to Hednesford Town.

The FA Cup exit allowed United to concentrate on league action and an amazing charge up the table saw the reds secure a play-off place with a 2-1 win at Matlock. The semi-final would be at regular rivals Bradford Park Avenue, where FC had so far failed to win a game. An outstanding display in front of a large travelling army saw United reach the play-off final with a 2-0 win. A final against Colwyn Bay left the club disappointed with the side losing 1-0. In the 2011-12 season the reds once again performed one of their trade-marked late surges and made it into a play-off spot, albeit in the aftermath of Northwich Victoria’s run-in with the league. A play-off final again was in store for the club at the end of the season but again they went

The Reds got off to a poor start, losing crucial games to the majority of the division’s best sides before the summer was out. FC United’s indifferent form was continuing and although the club had a brief flirtation with the play-off places they soon slumped back down into midtable. United eventually finished in a disappointing 13th place as Guiseley took the title and North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

The 2013/2014 season didn’t start well on the pitch as FC opened with a 2-0 defeat away to Worksop Town and a 0-0 draw at home to AFC Fylde meaning just one point from the first two games. From the start of February FC went on an amazing winning streak of twelve consecutive league games that put them top of the league. There was more play-off heartbreak when the club failed to reach the final going down in extra-time in the semi-final. The 2014-15 season saw FC make a slow start to the campaign, but finally promoted to the newly named National League, going up as champions – no one wanted another set of play offs!

PAST ENCOUNTERS 1 FC UNITED OF MANCHESTER 1 NORTH FERRIBY UNITED Greaves (45+1)

Kendall (12 pen)

March 3, 2010 | Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division | Stalybridge Celtic Ferriby regained their four point lead in the Evostik Premier Division with a determined and skilful performance at promotion rivals FC United of Manchester.

The first chance to FC’s Mike Norton but his shot was deflected for a corner. Ferriby’s first threat came after 12 minutes. Anthony Wilson was pulled down by home keeper James Spencer as he chased a misplaced back-pass. The referee ruled that the ball would have gone out of play so did not send-off Spencer. Ryan Kendall hit the penalty confidently low to Spencer’s right to give Ferriby the lead. Liam King almost doubled the lead seven minutes later. He broke through but Spencer blocked his shot. King slipped the rebound to Wilson who shot wide. The first 30 minutes were blighted by home players constantly arguing with the referee over decisions that went against them. Wilson broke through shortly before half-time but a challenge from a defender saw the ball break to the keeper.

FC United equalised just on half-time. A long ball found Norton surrounded by defenders. Somehow the ball reached Tom Greaves who scored from close range. Wilson almost regained the lead for Ferriby after 48 minutes when a hasty clearance bounced off him and slid past the post. FC United then had the better of the second-half but were mainly forced to shoot from distance due to some determined defence from Ferriby. Ferriby keeper Adam Nicklin saved well from Greaves before Kendall’s 35-yard-shot forced a hurried parried save from Spencer. A defender hooked the ball clear as Wilson raced-in for the rebound. Wright saw a dipping 20 yard shot go over the bar. In added time Nicklin made a fine save from substitute Rhodri Gigg’s 15 yard drive. This was a good all-round team performance from Ferriby. Nicklin and his back-four were solid and the midfield and strikers closed-down and harried FC’s midfield.

VIEW FROM THE

SID ELINE S

Sam Shepherd discusses the current unbeaten run and the managerial milestone... Ferriby extended their excellent unbeaten run to 14 games with last weekend’s victory over Nuneaton Town in the FA Cup 3rd qualifying round. Ferriby took the lead from an unlikely source, Russ Fry hit a first time shot from just outside the area that flew past the Nuneaton goalkeeper to give the villagers a 1-0 lead. Nuneaton managed to equalise soon after but midway through the second-half captain Liam King led his side into the next round with a bullet header from a deep cross from Curtis Bateson. King missed the chance to grab a brace when he missed a penalty when a Nuneaton defender was red carded for a deliberate handball. With a man advantage Ferriby held on comfortably to make it through to the fourth qualifying round for the third season in a row meaning they are potentially just 90 minutes

away from the 1st round proper for the first time in the clubs history. Stalybridge won their replay on Tuesday so they now stand in the way of Billy Heath’s side and a place in the first round. Stalybridge sit just below Ferriby in the league so this will be a tough game but I am backing us to make it though. Onto today and we welcome FC United of Manchester to the Eon Visual Media Stadium. I always love it when we play FCUM because home or away they bring noise and atmosphere with their huge fan base. I have seen some memorable games between the two sides including a 6-3 defeat at Bower Fold when it was 3-3 with ten minutes to go. I knew it wouldn’t be long before FCUM joined us in the Conference North and sitting in mid table they appear to be acquitting themselves North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

well at this level. Ferriby however are full of confidence and on the back of a 14 game unbeaten run stretching back to the opening day of the season I am predicting at least a draw for the villagers. This week marked four years in charge for Ferriby’s management due Billy Heath and Bobby Carroll. I remember their first game in charge, a defeat away at Northwich Victoria, it’s fair to say it has only got better since then. Leading us from relegation candidates to backto-back Doodson Cups, The Evo Stik Premier Title and the FA Trophy as well as coming within two games of back to back promotions its fair to say Billy and Bobby have done a fantastic job and long may their successful reign continue. Enjoy the game, Sam

CLUB BACKGROUND For a place in the FA Cup First Round proper North Ferriby United face off against Stalybridge Celtic.

Steve joins Celtic from Warrington Town, but is no stranger to playing under Liam Watson, who signed him from Prescot Cables, where he scored 19 goals in a season, in 2012 to play for Southport where he went onto make forty appearances and score four times. In 2013 he joined Vauxhall on loan, eventually making the move permanent in 2014. After banging them in for Vauxhall Motors (11 goals in 25 appearances), he joined Hyde for the 2014/15 season. After falling out of favour at Hyde, he joined Warrington Town, where he made 13 appearances.

The Celts progressed to the next round of the FA Cup by overcoming Chasetown 2-0 in a replay after the initial game had finished 1-1.

Since then the side have picked up eleven points with wins over Lowestoft Town, FC United of Manchester and Alfreton Town. Along with draws against Tamworth and Nuneaton Town thanks to a late Darius Osei strike the club have had a good month and a half of results.

The club are in a good run of form in all competitions with their last defeat coming back at the end of August in the shape of a 1-0 defeat to Chorley.

The side also progressed in the Manchester Cup with a resounding 4-1 victory over Abbey Hey, a game which saw Osei bag four goals in a scintilating 19 minute spell.
