MANAGER’S COLUMN
STEVE
HOUSHAM
May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Wrexham to our home this afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Wrexham in the National League. Yet again our last home game saw us lose to a last minute goal, it is something we have addressed and spoke about in training. Is it fitness? a lack of concentration? or just bad luck? We are fully aware we are probably the only side to train two times a week so fitness will sometimes tell, but I think it’s just about that odd bit of quality.
talking to the players about. Speaking about the Bromley game, for most of the game I was delighted with the performance. The lads played on the front foot and deserved more than what they got, but if you don’t put the chances you create away in this league you will get punished and that was the story yet again.
with desire and passion.
We welcome Wrexham today another big club who have had a mixed start. It’s going to be another tough game I’ve watched them and a few videos of them and recently they have a new manager in charge in Dean who has got them playing
lads really kick start our campaign.
So we have to perform to our best and hopefully get the rewards our performances deserve. As we all know the last time these two clubs met was at Wembley in what was, by far, North Ferriby’s best day in their history. Another day like that, here today, just might help the
It shows when we face the full-time teams as they work every day on different aspects of the game, while we only get a few hours. Six of our last seven games have been by the odd goal, the performances have been good, but our concentration levels must stay high for the full 90 mins at this level. We have been working hard on both aspects this week, especially the goals for column. Sometimes we look for a perfect chance or are not brave enough in the opposition box and it is something we have been

WREXHAM
North Ferriby United take on Wrexham FC in the National League eager to address their nine-game losing sequence... Wrexham make the journey to the Eon Visual Media Stadium to take on North Ferriby knowing the home side can spring a shock. Of course there’s history between both the Villagers and Wrexham with the two playing out one of the most entertaining FA Trophy finals in recent years. Wembley Stadium was the venue back in 2015, when the Villagers secured the FA Trophy in a dramatic 5-4 penalty shoot-out win after a 3-3 match in extra-time. And, whilst many of the players of that triumphant squad have left for pastures new, the memory will stay with many a Ferriby fan.

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme
Here’s hoping the Villagers can pick up three points and begin their climb to safety. The away side head to East Yorkshire sitting 14th in the standings, having picked up consecutive 2-2 draws against high-flying Barrow and in-form Gateshead, but with Ferriby and Braintree Town coming up they will have targeted maximum points ahead of difficult matches with Forest Green and Lincoln City. If Ferriby can take heart from the Dragons recent run of results its the fact they haven’t kept a clean sheet in their past seven outings – with their last nilling coming in the 1-0 win over Boreham Wood over a month ago.

CLUB HISTORY
CLUB HISTORY
WREXHAM Wrexham Football Club was formed by the members of the Wrexham Cricket Club at the end of season dinner in October 1864. The cricketers had wanted a sporting activity for the winter months/ In 1877/78 the FAW inaugurated the Welsh Cup competition, to run on similar lines to the English FA Cup. The first Welsh Cup Final was played between Wrexham and Druids FC on a neutral venue at Acton Park in Wrexham, where Wrexham won 1-0. Wrexham first played league football in 1890 in the Combination League, a competition they played in, apart from two seasons in the Welsh League, until 1905 when they joined the Birmingham & District League. In 1921, Wrexham were elected to the newly formed Third Division North of the Football League. Under player/manager Ken Barnes Wrexham won promotion for the first time in their history in 1961/62, the same season that they recorded their record score in a league match, beating Hartlepool United 10-1 on the Racecourse. John Neal’s arrival as manager saw a considerable improvement in the club’s fortunes. In 1969/70 he led them to promotion and two years later into European football for the first time following another Welsh Cup victory. The Robins’ first European match was against FC Zurich and resulted in a 3-2 aggregate win for the Welsh club. In the 1973/74 season, Wrexham
made their first appearance in the FA Cup quarter-finals before losing 1-0 to First Division Burnley at Turf Moor. Two years later they also appeared in the quarter finals of the European Cup-Winners’ Cup before losing to the eventual winners, Anderlecht, by just one goal over the two legs. The 1977/78 season was to be arguably the greatest in the club’s history, when they reached the quarter-finals of both the FA Cup and the Football League Cup. They also won Welsh Cup and the Third Division Championship to gain promotion to the old Second Division for the first and only time in the club’s history. The 1984-85 season saw Wrexham, under manager Bobby Roberts, beat Portuguese giants FC Porto in the European Cup-Winners’ Cup on the away goals before losing out to the crack Italian side AS Roma. Brian Flynn took over the club in 1989, and would remain as manager until 2001. In January 1992, Wrexham produced arguably their greatest ever piece of giant-killing, when they knocked the previous year’s Football League Champions Arsenal out of the FA Cup with goals from Steve Watkin and Mickey Thomas. Under Flynn’s leadership the 1992/93 season saw Wrexham promoted to League Two, and in 1995 won the Welsh Cup for the very last time in 1995, and in 1997 Wrexham reached the
quarter-finals of the FA Cup for only the third time in the club’s history. However, the club were to face troubled times when in November 2004 they became the first ever club to be docked ten points by the Football League when they plunged into administration following a takeover by two property developers. One bright spot followed when the club won the Football League Trophy by beating Southend United at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. The club came of administration in 2006, but both on the field and off the field events did not improve, and the club were relegated from the Football League in 2008 after 87 years as a member club. In November 2011 the club was taken over by its fans, when the Wrexham Supporters’Trust became the first ever Trust to take over a professional football club as a going concern. On the field, the club reached the Conference Play-off’s on three occasions, the last in 2013 saw the club lose to Newport County at Wembley Stadium, just six weeks after they played at the same venue for the first time, when they beat Grimsby Town in the FA Trophy Final, becoming the first Welsh club to win the trophy.

GUEST COLUMN
For The Love Of
FERRIBY Chief Football writer at the Press Association, Simon Peach tells of his love for non-league football... For some reason, there is something I love about going to watch North Ferriby United. Now, I do not profess to be at every game, nor to be a die-hard fan, but there is something special about coming down to the odd game. After struggling for parking, it is nice to walk past the allotments, through old-school turnstiles and watch a full-throttle game. There is a beauty in the simplicity and I appreciate it the longer I work in the media industry. I am currently the Chief Football Writer for the Press Association you know, that lot in the big, ugly building in Howden - and spend the majority of my time covering England and Manchester United. It is a privileged position that allows me to travel across the world to watch the biggest games - I would say best but, given the teams involved, they often are not - and visit stadiums you once sat openmouthed when shown on TV. I covered this year’s Olympics, having been to China on Manchester United’s pre-season tour and Euro 2016, yet during this period I made sure I checked North Ferriby’s fixtures to see if I could make any. I started going to games a few years ago as a displaced

Southampton fan living nearby and loved seeing some of the footballing traditions being eroded at the top level. This past week I have been in Istanbul covering Manchester United’s Europa League tie against Fenerbahce - a match played out at an imposing stadium in front of a baying crowd. You cannot get much further away from the EON Visual Media Stadium, yet there is something special about going to a match there, hearing every shout and being a matter of inches from the pitch. You feel closer, you feel involved. Unlike the very top, you also feel like the players and staff care as much as a supporter. There is no ‘us’ and ‘them’ mentality. That is what makes nonleague football so enjoyable, even if clubs like today’s visitors Wrexham rightfully feel they have been in it far too long. It feels like a glimpse of the way things used to be. When players would catch the bus home with fans or go for a post-match pint and chew the fat. Those dynamics and that landscape are now largely unrecognisable in the professional leagues, but not lower down.
Mixed zones - where journalists wait to interview players - offer a true glimpse of the modern, elitelevel footballer. Try to stop 10 players and maybe three will dignify you with a response. The others will be on their phone, or just flat out ignore you. I once saw one a United player look a fellow club employee up and down in disdain after daring to ask him for a word. From there they disappear into the night, where the public often wait outside long after the match for a photo or a squiggle on their programme. Again, too few stop. Last week at Old Trafford I saw Paul Pogba ignore the screams for an autograph as he walked away to his car. The next morning I opened up an app on my phone to see he had gone back to sign a few signatures, but that gesture was filmed by friends and posted on his social media account to show what a good bloke he is. It just highlights how gaudy and fake life can be at the top of football, and underlined why I appreciate non-league football so much. You can trust what you see and trust players care as much as you do. That is why going down to see North Ferriby is so enjoyable.

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

STANDS Sam Shepherd talks us through an all too familiar scenario for the Villagers involving late drama... Where do I start with last Saturday’s game? Well let’s look at the facts, Ferriby lost for the 7th time in October in what was a horror month for Steve Housham and his side. The defeat last Saturday against Bromley however was different. Ferriby were by far the better team, they dominated for long periods of the game, but still found a way to lose. In the first-half it was like watching a completely different team. The shackles had clearly been released by Housham and the lads played some excellent attacking football. Ryan Fallowfield was bossing the midfield picking out passes with ease and this created a couple of excellent chances that Reece Thompson wasn’t able to convert. Stephen Brogan and Sam Topliss were bombing forward and putting good crosses in, but once again Ferriby were sloppy and didn’t convert their chances. Early in the second-half that changed when Reece Thompson scored his first goal since he got the winner away at Gateshead in mid-September. Fallowfield heavily influenced the move by playing Kyle 22

Wootton in behind the Bromley defence. Wootton saw his shot parried, but it went straight to the feet of Thompson and he buried the chance. The joy for all the players was clear to see in the celebration
as goals have been so hard to come by recently. Despite this Ferriby began playing like a rabbit caught in the headlights immediately after the goal and within 5 minutes Bromley equalised. This was very disappointing because Ferriby had dominated the game up to that point. To their credit Ferriby picked their heads up and began playing good football again. The excellent Fallowfield was substituted after running himself into the ground, but his replacement Danny Emerton was also very good as his pace and trickery created several chances that
unfortunately weren’t taken. Then as has happened a few times this season Ferriby were punished
as Bromley grabbed a 89th minute winner. A bitter pill to swallow to say the least but a much improved performance from The Villagers. Today we face Wrexham, anybody remember the last time we played Wrexham? Yes that’s right the FA Trophy final at Wembley, the greatest day in the history of North Ferriby United. We were huge underdogs that day and we will be today, but if we go 2-0 down just picture that Wembley arch and the lads may just turn it round. Enjoy the game! Sam
