STALYBRIDGE CELTIC North Ferriby United came within a minute of reaching the First Round of the FA Cup Proper but will be looking to finish the job tonight against Stalybridge Celtic.
The Villagers looked to be heading into the next round of the FA Cup after Danny Clarke had give the away side a 42nd minute lead. But in the dying seconds of the game Bohan Dixon grabbed a injury time leveller to send to game to a reply at the Eon Visual Media Stadium.
In the league not much separates these two sides and on the balance of play this should be an even contest. Ferriby sit just two places above today’s opponents with the Celtcs accumulating 18 points. Stalybridge have won five lost five and drawn three games whilst scoring 19 goals but conceding 18.

MANAGER: Liam Watson After a serious injury curtailed his playing career Liam Watson went into management with a host of clubs including Southport twice and Burscough. In 2013, he became the manager of AFC Telford United, where he again won the Conference North in 2014, and though they reached the second round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history, they remained rooted in the bottom reaches of the Conference Premier, and Liam and Telford parted company to Celtic’s benefit, as he was tasked with saving Celtic with just eight games left which is exactly what he did!

Stalybridge Celtic
CLUB HISTORY Stalybridge Celtic’s history has been the subject of many debates for the greater part of the century. Although an outfit calling itself ‘Celtic’ appears in the archives for 1906, this side seemingly only played friendlies on a ground at North-End. This seed of a club was probably the basis for the club we know today, which was formed in 1909 by Herber Rhodes, a local business man and philanthropist. Mr Rhodes spent a chunk of his fortune on developing Bower Fold. He also played for the team
and designed the strip (basing it on the colours used by his racehorses). Celtic played for two seasons in the Lancashire & Cheshire Amateur League, before turning professional and joining the Lancashire Combination become second division champion’s at the first attempt. Due to some local bureaucracy, Celtic’s ambition to join the Football League meant that they had to join the Southern League, and travel by train to every away match. Fortunately, finishing runners up (to Stoke) meant promotion. There followed a short pause
North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme
most people know as the First World War. In the aftermath (1920-21 to be exact) Celtic rejoined the Central League. At the end of the 1921 season, Celtic became one of the founder members of the Third Division (North). Our first game in the third division was against Chesterfield, a home game that we won 6-0. However, winning this league was to prove too difficult, finishing 7th and 11th in the first two years. Lacking the support of local people, the funds were not available to press for a third campaign, forcing Celtic to voluntarily resign from the football league. Celtic rejoined the Cheshire County League (replacing the reserve squad) and stayed there for sixty years until the formation of the Bass NW Counties League. Peter Wragg took the helm and steered Celtic to Championship victory in 1980, eventually winning the Bass NW Championship in 1984 and 1987, and runners up in the NPL First division. During this time of league progress, there was a lot of work at Bower Fold, culminating in the ground gaining League grading.
Phil Wilson took over the reigns in 1989 when relegation threatened, eventually finishing second in the NPL. He followed this escaping act with promotion into the Conference in 1992. Our first season was a success, finishing 12th, but it was followed by disaster and relegation loomed again. Peter Wragg returned and saved the sinking ship by winning 9 of the last 12 games. Peter Wragg resigned at the start of the 1996/97 season, replaced by Brian Kettle, but it was not enough, and Celtic were relegated in 1998 back to the NPL after finishing bottom. It was troubling times for the club, and there was a succession of managers including Stirling and Keelan before Phil Wilson came back. Phil Wilson was to prove an inspirational manager. Firstly in 1999 he brought us the League Cup, then, in 2001, we won the Cheshire Senior Cup (something we’d not won for nearly 50 years). Demolishing a strong Stockport County team 5-1 at Ewen Fields. In the same season, we went on to beat Blyth Spartans in the President’s Cup, before going on to win the league title after an impressive victory against closest rivals Emley at their ground.
Conference before sensationally sacking nearly the entire team. Miller won the President’s Cup at the first attempt, and we finished 4th in the NPL. During this time, a new stand was built, upping the seated capacity to over 1200. With the formation of the Conference North in 2004/05, Celtic had to finish 2003/04 in 13th or higher - we only just did it. A sensational win at champions Hucknall Town saw us finish 13th. Our first season in the Conference North was almost our last, and with half the season gone, Miller was sacked and replaced by John Reed. John pulled off the great escape, clawing back an 18 point deficit to finish a place above the relegation zone, following it up by missing out on the play offs on the last day of the 2005/06 season. A poor couple of seasons saw John Reed replaced with Steve Burr, who took Celtic to the play off final at his first attempt in the 2007/08 season, losing by one goal to Barrow. Steve Burr’s second season saw him come within a whisker of the play offs, and after a storming start to his third season in charge, he left to join Kidderminster in
The title was won away at local side Droylsden thanks to an injury time Stuart Locke penalty. We finished up with over 100 points and scored nearly 100 goals. The foray into the Conference was short lived though. Phil Wilson joined Southport, taking several of the squad with him, and the assistant coach. With scant time before the start of the new season, Paul Futcher took over the reigns. With a series of disastrous runs, Celtic replaced Paul with Dave Miller. He almost, but not quite, kept us in the North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme
the Conference National, and was replaced first by Benny Phillips and then by Jim Harvey. With the finances at Celtic unable to allow them to compete with the top finances sides in the division, Celtic took the brave option of going full time with a youth set up to allow them to compete in a different way. After a good first season, finishing 6th just outside the play offs, Harvey’s second full season was less successful, finishing midtable. A bad start to season13/14 saw Harvey replaced by former player Keith Briggs. Celtic have made numerous appearances in the FA cup beyond the qualifying stages, starting in 1922, when we forced a replay from West Brom, at West Brom. Since then, there have been 12 other appearances. We have even been to the second round twice: 1993, when Carlisle beat us 3-1 at Brunton Park, and again in 1999, when Chester got the rub of the referee and beat us 2-1 at home. Our best FA Trophy performance was in 2001, when we lost to Stevenage Borough.

MATCH REPORT 1 1
STALYBRIDGE CELTIC Dixon (90+3)
NORTH FERRIBY UNITED Clarke (42)
October 24, 2015 | Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round Qualifying | Bower Fold | Att: 547 Ferriby’s attempt to reach the FA Cup First Round Proper for the first time was foiled by an equaliser in the dying seconds of the game.
struggled to break-down The Villagers’ defence and only had three clear attempts in the whole half. Ferriby’s defence and midfield constantly denied space and time to Celtic.
The game had opened with Ash Palmer placing a header just over the bar in only the first minute. Shortly after, Ben Middleton also put a header over the bar.
Ferriby were left fuming after 50 minutes when they were denied what seemed a clear penalty for a blatant push on Middleton as he jumped for the ball in the area.
Celtic’s Adam Farrell hit a shot to Adam Nicklin then saw another one blocked on the edge of the area as both teams looked to attack.
Danny Emerton was a thorn in Stalybridge’s side throughout and he was unlucky after 69 minutes with an overhead kick that was held at the second attempt by McMillan.
Dixon had a shot deflected for a corner from which jack Higgins headed over. The Villagers thought they had taken the lead after 32 minutes but Liam King’s goal was disallowed for off-side. Two minutes later Mark gray powered an Adam Bolder free-kick against the post. Ferriby deserved their goal when it came in the 42nd minute. A Russ Fry and Danny Clarke onetwo ended with Clarke firing a low angled shot past home keeper Tony McMillan. The second-half belonged largely to Ferriby. Celtic
Substitute Ryan Kendall had an opportunity to clinch the game in the 89th minute. He stabbed the ball wide narrowly wide of the post in a one-on-one with McMillan. Four minutes later the game was cruelly snatched from Ferriby by Dixon’s strike. The shot was Celtic’s only on-goal effort in the half. Ferriby certainly deserved to win this game but they will be happy that they are in Monday evening’s First Round draw.

The National League have teamed up with the Poppy Appeal to give you the fans the chance to win a Captain’s armband. The National League is combining forces with The Royal British Legion over the forthcoming weeks to raise the awareness of their annual Poppy Appeal and how those financial contributions aid the sterling work done to support members of our armed forces who need care in our communities at this time. All 68 National League clubs will be working in unison with their local branch of The Royal British Legion to oversee collections are held at each club and this will be supplemented through a unique partnership, whereby a specially produced ‘captains armband’ will be worn by each respective club captain at all matches to be played in The National League on Saturday 14th November. Each armband will then be available for auction by the respective member club and it is hoped across the whole of The National League an additional £10,000 can be raised to supplement those amounts raised via ground collections and any other individual local arrangements around Remembrance Day.
Brian Barwick, Chairman of The National League remarked, “Each and every one of our member clubs already work within their communities in many varied ways, so we see this partnership as an extension of supplementing the sterling work many do. Raising awareness of the work undertaken by The Royal British Legion alongside the Poppy Appeal will enable more funding to be made available for those who have served their country and need our help. In 2015 we have sadly been reminded only too graphically of the dangers our service personnel face, so we are pleased to be able to work together to enhance the
awareness of the Poppy Appeal. May I thank everyone taking part in this initiative for their valued contribution and we look forward to the auction of the ‘captains armbands’ raising even more needed extra funds”. In response to his comments, Claire Rowcliffe, Head of Regional Fundraising with The Royal British Legion stated. “Having the support of The National League for this year’s Poppy Appeal means a lot. Funds raised will help us to continue providing vital support to serving individuals, those who are moving on or have moved back to civilian life, and importantly their families too.”

Sam Elliott talks about the grandure of the FA Cup and all the thrills and spills it brings... FA Cup day - not that some in the wider football world have noticed that the grand old competition has even kicked off yet!
Anything this side of the first round is often treated as a prelude to the introduction of the Football League clubs and, eventually, the Premier League big boys. You can usually set your watch to when the competition begins for those poor souls unaware of anything except what Sky Sports News force-feed them. It’s usually about the same time the tabloids go to town on our Non-League builders, window cleaners and waiters but here’s some breaking news to stick on Sky’s yellow ticker - there’s some fantastic stories already developing. Today’s the day the dreammaking really begins. The first round is 90 minutes away and some brilliant ties will light up the weekend. We’ve already had our fair share of tales, fabulous games and goals and, you guessed, classic upsets. One of the best may not be beaten. Goalkeeper Ricky Drury has a place in FA Cup folklore
as he scored a wonderful injury-time leveller for Holbeach… with a stunning overhead kick! His Step 5 side were 1-0 down to National League North Worcester City when his bicycle beauty saved the day – it was caught on camera and made him an online star. Overhead Kick Rick also made the NLP’s front page! Could that goal be bettered? Wealdstone fans may think so – Scott Davies’ 70 yarder in the last round has been renamed the Brockenhurst Blockbuster! Some 20-yards into his own half, the former Aldershot player took aim to devastating effect. It earned him and his team-mates a visit from the famous cup last week and he told his pals: “I think they should all remember the hype my goal created!” North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme
The beauty of the Cup is that you can uncover real characters with real stories attached to them. Luke Tuffs, 28, is a key part of Combined Counties League Hartley Wintney’s management team. Nothing unusual or different about a young coach making his way. Except Luke is openly gay, and at a level of the game where social issues are still commonplace he made a stand in a public way to fight from the front. Who doesn’t love a Cup comeback? We do, and so do Westfields. Evo-Stik NLP South Kidsgrove were 4-0 up at half time against their Midland League opposition. Suddenly, something changed. By the time the full-time whistle went after extra-time Westfields won 6-5 to progress. Talk about getting your money’s worth.

VIEW FROM THE
SID ELINE S
Late goals bring about joy and despair and Ferriby have been on the end of both in recent times Sam Shepherd discusses the last few games. Since the last home game we have extended the unbeaten run to 16 matches, however one of those results was far more satisfying than the other and both games were decided by stoppage time goals. Danny Clarke popped up right at the death against FCUM with a rather fortuitous goal to steal all three points. After a tough even game which neither side deserved to lose the relief amongst the home fans was clear to see. The FCUM fans were excellent as always and boosted the crowd to almost 1000 which was very good to see. The win propelled Ferriby into the play-offs and without a defeat since the opening day of the season things are looking very good in the National League North. After winning last week in the dying seconds it was perhaps not too surprising that Ferriby would be
struck with the same sucker punch in their next game in the FA Cup at Stalybridge. Ferriby were looking to make it through to the FA Cup first round proper for the first time in their history and for most of the game things were going well. Ferriby took the lead just before half-time when Russ Fry played a one-two on the edge of the area with Danny Clarke. Clarke received the final pass and finished beautifully finding the bottom corner with ease and leaving the goalkeeper stranded. Ferriby had hit the post earlier in the half and dominated for most of the second. Substitute Ryan Kendall had a great chance to seal the win with around then minutes to go when he was sent through one on one by Adam Bolder. His North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme
first touch was slightly heavy which meant he had to rush his shot with the keeper advancing and he put it wide. Ferriby were made to pay for not taking their chances deep in stoppage time when Bohan Dixon’s shot from the edge of the area beat Nicklin and found the corner, cue massive celebrations from the home crowd. So we are in the draw for the first round but we have to get the job done tonight first and hopefully we can do so. It was gutting to concede so late on in the original tie but hopefully we can finally book our place in the First Round proper tonight even if we have to win another penalty shootout! Enjoy the game, Sam
