PAUL BOWDEN-BROWN THE CHAIRMAN

May I extend a warm and friendly welcome to the officials, players and supporters of Cray Wanderers to Princes Park this afternoon, the club’s new home for the next five years, and after an enjoyable game and some refreshments they all have a safe journey home. Well here we are once again playing at home this Saturday afternoon after a midweek win over Herne Bay. Last weekend we took of AFC Hornchurch in the FA Trophy, I was driven to the ground by Ian and my son and his grandson joined me, as usual we left too early prepared to be held up at the Tunnel only to find no queue, so we arrived early and we took the opportunity to stop at a local hostelry and have a couple of pints and a steak sandwich. We arrived at the ground knowing that if we were to get into the next round we would have to be at our best. But as our luck is running this season, we sustained injuries to key players during the home draw that added to the existing list of injuries. Tommy had to travel to the replay with two young academy

PAGE 04

players on the bench with our reserve goalkeeper, too. So, you could understand my feeling of trepidation that we were not getting the rub of the green this season and I believe the standard of refereeing has not helped. I just believe there should be more communication and consistency something in my opinion is missing this season, but at least the players have responded to my call for better discipline, we are well below where we were last season at this time so in the circumstances well done boys. For those that take the time to read my programme notes, you will know that I have been on my soapbox this season about the lack of support, and whether anyone other than myself, my management team and players want a football club to play as Thamesmead Town.

THAMESMEAD TOWN V CRAY WANDERERS

Or am I just wasting my money funding the operations of this club, and rather than keeping the club alive I should have allowed the club to die at the end of last season rather than giving it a shot in the arm with a new start at Dartford. On Tuesday evening at the replay, the wind starting to blow down the pitch as it’s known to do, but the pitch was in the best condition that I had seen it over many years. Just before the start of the game, I got hold of the captain and Kinchy and pulled them aside and said “boys do me a favour, I know we are down to the bare bones with senior players this evening, but let’s go out there and play for the club’s badge”. We scored first, then scored a second and it was not until the 75 minutes that our opposition scored a goal, to be honest it was

> THE CHAIRMAN

a great strike, so that made the last 15 minutes very nervy, as our opposition threw everything at us. To a man, the team played as a unit and bodies were put on the line it was unbelievable, but I believe what got the team through to win the cup tie was not only scoring more goals than the opposition, I felt it was the camaraderie and great attitude of every player who worked to the letter of the manager’s game plan. When the whistle finally went, believe me I was exhausted, but I made my way to the pitch and congratulated every player involved, as they came off I was so proud of what those boys had achieved against all the odds. Their exploits that Tuesday evening in Hornchurch had answered one of the questions

unanswered, we have a squad of players working with a first-class management team that want to play for Thamesmead Town. Now what we have to achieve is to find new investment into this fine old club because I cannot continue single handily to finance the operations of this club without this additional investment together with new blood on the board. I will finish by thanking Ian Docker my general manager, and Stephen Quashie our academy coach who together are responsible for the academy operations at Long Lane who, without their pupils being available on Tuesday evening, our manager would have only had one substitute. I should also include Linda

the tutor completing a great professional team, and I feel also I should thank Andrew Merritt and David Keith who through SCL are our funders for the Apprenticeship Scheme running out of Long Lane, so I thank you all. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those Dartford supporters that join us on match day when their team is playing away and taking advantage of our Mead Card initiative, it’s not bad gaining entrance to our matches for £5 and over 65s for only £2-50, remember telling all your friends you can enjoy an afternoon or evening watching TTFC. Now let’s enjoy an afternoon of good football and here’s hoping we earn three points. Paul Bowden-Brown Director and Owner

THE MANAGER <

TOMMY WARRILOW THE manager

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to this afternoon’s game against another of my former sides Cray Wanderers. I’d like to welcome all my good friends to Princes Park and I’m absolutely delighted that since our last game with them, they’ve had more good news about their new ground – they fully deserve it and I hope that they get the news that they can put the first spade in the ground very soon. We go into today’s game on the back of a half decent unbeaten run of games over the last couple of weeks in very, very testing circumstances. I know that all teams say that they have injury problems etc, but in all my twenty odd years of managing, I’ve never known anything like we’re going through at the moment.

We’re going game to game having to ride out a very difficult period where we’re asking for players to come and help, but our involvement in the FA Trophy causes a problem for some and obviously talking to some players financially, too. But full credit to the boys – they’ve just got on with things brilliantly! We’ve tried to rest a few of them when and if we can. If we’ve been a bit indifferent in performances that’s understandable, but no-one can fault the work rate and the desire that we’ve been showing – I can’t fault anyone and they’ve all been second to none! Anyone will tell you the most

PAGE 06

THAMESMEAD TOWN V CRAY WANDERERS

important thing is to win football games and then address everything else later and that’s what we’re doing going into today’s game after a hard-fought win over a good organise Herne Bay side on Wednesday. Indeed, as we’re writing these notes, I’m still waiting to see whose come through the game with knocks and who’s got a clean bill of health. So, I’ll have been ringing round again over the last few days trying to get players in to boost the squad in the coming weeks. We obviously weren’t helped by losing Tash after he was recalled to Tonbridge when we thought we had another month on him, but then that’s

> THE MANAGER

the danger that you run when you have players on loan with the call-back system after month one! He’s been great for us and was beginning to impose himself on games again – his goal ratio for us was excellent and we obviously wish him well! Fortunately, I manged to get Warren Mfula in for Wednesday to help out – I took the option up because we were down to the bare bones. At Hornchurch we had two academy boys on the bench with Max – last weekend in was a little better and Tuesday

again, but we can’t run our forward planning ideally on this sort of basis, but this is football and we’ve got to get on with it – it’s the hand that we’ve been dealt and so far, we’ve had a fantastic run. It’s us addressing each game individually until things change – and they will as time goes on which will allow players to get over their injuries and we get everyone back. We can then concentrate on our shape which we know is all over the place at times in games because we’re introducing players to new

systems that they’re alien to. I can’t fault the lads work ethic and attitude at this time as it’s been hectic as we’ve already said – playing Sunday and then Tuesday doesn’t help – but hopefully the boys will have got some rest before today’s game against a side who I said at the start of the season who I fully expect to be up there competing at the end of the season. Thanks as ever for your support and we’ll see you in Champs Bar after the game. Tommy Warrilow First-Team Manager

LEON SMITH THE CAPTAIN

Hello everyone and welcome to Princes Park, where we take on Cray Wanderers in the Bostik League South.

Good afternoon everyone from a frustrated skipper! It was a hard-earned three points for the team on Wednesday. We managed to grind out a result although it wasn’t the best of games to watch.

We did once again battle to the end – something that we are starting to do and make sure we carry on for the full ninety minutes. Can’t say I enjoyed it too much from the stands though as I was serving the first game of my ban.

That said Avo’s header did mean that it was three points in the bag and another win to take into today’s game. Greenie’s given me a bit more “work” this week with the player feature in the programme – good job I had the time – I can’t wait to get back playing and involved and that hopefully will be Tuesday night at Hastings. THE Academy Good afternoon and here’s hoping Tom and the boys get three points today. The academy scholars played our ground-sharing partners, Dartford Reds, last Wednesday in the National League U19 Alliance League Cup and unfortunately went down 4-1. Both teams had players missing through illness or by having games that evening through being on loan, so it made for a hard-fought match. Both teams had chances and good saves from our keeper Rilwan Odarinile and Dartfords’ Sam Murray, kept their respective teams in the match. I was very pleased with a lot of our early work, as the lads pressed high, just as manager Steve Quashie had worked on in training. As the second half progressed, we made some individual mistakes and conceded soft goals and heads dropped. Good passing from Dartford finished in two more goals being

conceded and the game was out of reach. I’m pleased we competed till the end and again lots of positives can be taken from the match. I was delighted to see two of our scholars on the bench against AFC Hornchurch in the FA Trophy and again in the league match against Herne Bay midweek. Even though Dante and Ade didn’t get on, it was a great experience for them and endorses our programme. Team against Dartford - Rilwan Odarinile, Owen Shirley, Tyler Spranger, Dante McIntosh, Kiitan Oluwasere, Ade Aderniran, Sudayisi Sendege, Artan Fanaj, Reuben Mensah, Ryan Walters and Zakaria Coulibaly. CLUB HISTORY

thamesmead town Thamesmead F.C. was formed in 1969 as a community team for local youngsters. The club merged with Southlake FC in 1973, and by 1979 were fielding a Saturday team, playing on local park pitches. In 1980 the club entered the London Spartan League at the Intermediate Division Three level and dominated the divisions in the early 80s, but were couldn’t gain promotion to the Senior Division until they gained senior status. In 1985, the club changed its name to Thamesmead Town FC, and later that year they relocated to Bayliss Avenue, before finally gaining senior status during the summer of 1987 and were accepted into the London Spartan League Premier Division. The club moved to the Kent League in June 1990, where they remained until 2008, generally finishing amongst the top half dozen in the table. In 2002–03, the club missed the runner-up spot on goal difference, despite bizarrely having more points than Cray Wanderers, who won the League! Keith McMahon took the helm in the summer of 2006 and this would be the beginning of a new successful era for Thamesmead. In 2007–08, Thamesmead Town were champions of the Kent League, winning the title on the last day of the season. The title ensured promotion to the Isthmian League, where they were elected to play in Division One North in 2008–09. The summer of 2009 saw work begin to give Bayliss Avenue a massive transformation as work began on “Sportsman Club Thamesmead” The Project aimed to deliver first class facilities for the

local community as well as a stadium suitable for Conference South which was hoped to be completed for the start of the 2010/11 season. However, delays ensured and it was at this time around September 2012 that former Maidstone United Chairman Paul Bowden-Brown became involved in the club as a director, with the main aim of stabilizing the finances off the field and then during January 2015 became outright owner of the club as chairman. When Keith McMahon resigned in early 2015. Before in 2012-13, the Mead finished 3rd in this division and beat Maldon & Tiptree on penalties in the final to gain promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division for the first time in their history. The club’s stay in the Premier Division lasted just one season, and the club endured two turbulent seasons, after Keith McMahon resignation The Chairman appointed Terry Spillane as his replacement unfortunately his reign was terminated by the Chairman early 2016 although the team was in the play-off positions. In the summer of 2016 the Chairman appointed Tommy Warrilow as the first-team manager, and with a new man at the helm came fresh hopes for the season, as Warrilow alongside his number two former Leather and Dartford skipper Alex O’Brien looked to take the club back to the Bostik Premier League. Pre-season began with a completely new-look squad yet it proved to be a historic season in the FA Cup, when the club were the first to play a tie in the Channel Islands before reaching the Third Qualifying Round for the first time in the club’s history.

In March 2017, the Chairman announced that the Club due to unacceptable rising costs at Baylis Avenue the Chairman had reached agreement with the Directors of Dartford FC to enter into a five- year Ground share Agreement that would allow the Club to play their home games at Princes Park Stadium. Dduring the 17-18 close season this Groundshare was formally sanctioned by the new Bostik league directors, as well as confirming that for the first time, the Mead would be competing in the South Division for the 17-18 season. In August 2017, the club enjoyed a record 8-0 win in the FA Cup (away to East Preston) which was not only the Clubs biggest ever win in the competition but was also the first time, we have won a competitive game by eight clear goals!

Wednesday 18th October Princes Park Attendance: 101 Bostik League South

HERNE BAY Embery (50)

The Mead’s walking wounded left it late, but Richard Avery’s late, late header secured three precious points against a Herne Bay side who showed that they would be contenders come the end of April. With skipper Leon Smith suspended and striker Tashi Jay Kwayie recalled to his parent club Tonbridge Angels, the Gaffer tweaked his thread bare squad once again, and all must be hugely credited for the win. Laurent Mendy benefited from a superb run from Warren Mfala who had only been signed earlier in the day as he slammed home the opener just before the break. The visitors levelled five minutes into the second half from possibly the move of the match when Emburey steered a header into the Mead’s net, and the game looked destined to finish level until Avo’s late heroics as he powered home a last-minute header to win the Mead’s third game in nine days. Laurent could have put the home side in front in the opening quarter when he couldn’t keep down a prod at an early corner – perhaps it was just a “practice” for what was to follow? The Mead created some decent first half chances – Paul Vines just couldn’t stretch to reach Jake McIntyre’s cross, and Warren was denied a debut goal by the keepers’ legs, before Bay keeper Hunter did brilliantly to deny Vinesy as the Mead’s number nine dwelled a fraction too long after

Warren had done magnificently down the right. The home side didn’t have it all their own was however as keeper Lewis Carey made a remarkable save to deny a piledriver five minutes from the break. Whether or not it kick started the home side is questionable, but within a minute, Laurent drilled the ball home from the edge of the box after being found by Warren. The response from the visitors was a double half time change and within five minutes they were level, with Emburey stooping low to head home a great whipped

ball in from the right. The game then became as tight as anything that the Mead has been involved in all season as both sides looked to take the three points. The Mead backline just about stayed firm whilst at the other end, the chances were equally sparse, but they did come. Warren thought he’d scored his first goal for the club after a super run and through ball from Bode Anidugbe, and just as both sides looked to have settled for the draw, Avo was on hand to head the winner. by Mike Green

INTRODUCING

CRAY WANDERERS Cray Wanderers arrive at Princes Park looking for a repeat of their Kent Senior Cup win over the Mead back in August. Tony Russell’s side arrive sitting in sixth place in the table, but boasting the best defensive records in the BOSTIK South after only conceding nine in their first twelve league games - and two of those were scored by the Mead in the opening game of the season which ended PAGE 24

Wanderers arrive in good form - seven games unbeaten - and will of course to put one over the two men who just a few years ago pulled off the footballing equivalent of “The Great Escape” when our very Tommy and OB steered Cray away from the relegation trap-door of the Ryman North by winning the last ten games of season 2014/2015.

CRAY WANDERERS

Recent CLUB HISTORY Cray Wanderers have been in exile from the Cray’s since 1973 when they lost the Grassmeade ground in Chelsfield Road, due to housing development. They moved to Oxford Road, on the borders of Footscray and Sidcup, but when that ground was ruled to be unsuitable for Step 5 football it became necessary from 1998/99 to play first team matches at Hayes Lane. Cray Wanderers announced on 6 October 2014 an intention to purchase Flamingo Park, adjacent to the A20 Sidcup by-pass, subject to receiving planning permission from LB Bromley for a new sporting community hub. The first origins of Cray Wanderers are linked to the construction of the London, Chatham & Dover railway line during 1858 to 1860. Cray Wanderers were a strong force in senior county football at the turn of the century. After being Kent Junior Cup semifinalists and finalists in 1890/91 and 1891/92 they entered the first ever FA Amateur Cup competition in 1893/94. They had a spell as a professional club between 1895 and 1907. They were one of the founder members of the Kent League in 1894/95, and they won the championship in 1901/02. After WW1, Cray switched to the London League where they remained till 1934. Cray rejoined the Kent League in 1934/35, but their four year stay came to grief when 1936 saw the loss of the Fordcroft ground in Cray Avenue, their home since 1898. Cray were forced to drop into a lower level of football, drifting from one temporary pitch to another

while the club committee dwindled to a perilously small number. The team struggled badly in the South London Alliance and the Kent Amateur League. 1951/52 heralded a new era, and an upturn in the club’s fortunes, when local businessman Mick Slater took over at the helm. The club was elected to the London League and regained its senior status. Cray moved to a new ground at Grassmeade in 1955. Their stay there was a very successful period in the club’s history. They played in the London League and then the Aetolian League. Cray switched to the semiprofessional Metropolitan League for five seasons commencing in 1966/67. In 1971/72 a merger of the Metropolitan League and the Greater London League created the Met London League. Cray moved to Oxford Road in 1973/74. Johnny Biddle and Jimmy Wakeling proved to be successful managers. In 1974/75 Cray won the Met London League and League Cup, scoring 170 goals in all matches that season. In 1976/77 and 1977/78 Cray won the London Spartan League championship. Cray decided to return to the Kent League in 1978/79. Success came because Cray won the championship in 1980/81, having been runners-up the year before. Their powerful new team under manager Harry Richardson reached the FA Vase quarterfinal and 5th round in those two seasons. After that, the 1980s decade brought only one more piece of silverware, the Kent League Cup in 1983/84. After finishing Kent League runners up in 1990/91, Cray had a lean period during most of

the 1990s, with the exception of 1992/93 when they won the Kent Senior Trophy. A new club chairman Gary Hillman arrived in 1994/95 and Ian Jenkins, a Cray player since 1993, was appointed manager in 1999. As champions of the Kent League in 2002/03 and 2003/04, also reaching the FA Vase quarterfinal, they achieved promotion into the Ryman League Division One. Five years later at the end of season 2008/09 came further promotion into the Ryman Premier League. After parting company with long-serving manager Ian Jenkins, relegation into the Ryman Division One North came at the end of 2013/14. The 2014/15 season started with much optimism but this was soon dispelled with a run of difficult results and three changes in management. Looking like having to suffer back to back relegations at Christmas and with 10 games to go the Wands went on a 10 game winning run, with a team assembled by the then manager Tommy Warrilow to secure survival and became the Ryman North League Team of the Year. For 2015/16 The Wands were managed by former player Tony Russell. The Wands finished third in the Ryman North Division losing in the play-off semi final. So onwards to 2016 and The Wands found themselves back in the Ryman South to go and visit foes old and new again managed by Tony Russell. The team had an indifferent season and will look to achieve better things in 2017/18 both on and off the pitch.

PLAYER INTERVIEW <

FEATURE INTERVIEW:

LEON SMITH

In the latest of our Player Interviews, today we talk to one of the key figures in the Mead’s success this season - GREENIE has finally caught up with the skipper LEON SMITH…

PAGE 26

THAMESMEAD TOWN V CRAY WANDERERS

> PLAYER INTERVIEW

We started by asking the skipper to tell us how he signed for the Mead – he told us: “I got a phone call on the Friday from Tom inviting me to the training ground the following day. It was a strange first training session as I was across the water and as a new player you hope to see some familiar faces to ease you in, but I just sat and kept myself to myself (which was hard for me!!) and work out what Thamesmead Town was all about.” Leon went on: “When I joined, the club wasn’t doing very well with results, but we had a good vibe amongst the boys. This season the club have moved to Dartford which is an unbelievable stadium for our level of football and personally I feel that the move has bettered us as a team and we have a fantastic aura around the changing room. “I have always had a certain routine before a game and I tend to stick to that. The South is a completely different league to the North, but I feel like I’ve adapted well to the league and travel. “Although I am the other side of the water, it’s probably nearer than some teams I’ve played for, so the travel is not too bad, but the “odd” occasion of an accident on the Bridge or surrounding area is highly annoying – that’s the printable version anyway!” Like most clubs at this stage, the Mead have a hectic schedule, but we wondered what it’s like for the players. Leon told us: “Yeah it has been a tough start to the season for all of us involved,” he said. Leon’s finishes his two-match suspension today, but admitted,

“as much as the rest will be nice, I’m gutted I can’t play as I’m enjoying my football now and being out on the football pitch you have no stress or worries (apart from when I’m cautioned), it’s hard to sit and watch. “With playing on a Sunday sometimes and then a Tuesday it does take it out of you with having to get up the next day to go to work. I tend not to say too much on match days other than the usual motivational words, but tend to do it on a one-to-one basis as we are going out the door!” The club has changed a lot from Leon’s first day – for the better we wondered? “Yeah like I said earlier the move was great for everyone involved with the club. From a player’s point of view, it’s nice to turn up on a match day with the faculties that we have at our disposal it has given the boys such a lift and we thank the Chairman for the effort he made to give us this chance.” Some of the Mead’s games this year have been good to watch, but what have they been like to play in we wondered? And from the skipper’s perspective what’s been the best? “I think I would have to say the Billericay game at Princes Park was probably one of the most enjoyable games I’ve been involved in and to play against some players that for years I have watched on Match of the Day was something I won’t forget. The two games against Hornchurch we showed what class and hard work can get and the boys were buzzing with the result. “I had a on and off season last

year with suspensions due to my mouth!!! Ha, ha, ha – seriously, since the 2016/17 season finished, I got straight in the gym and was determined to lose weight and get in shape as I promised myself and my mum, I would have a good season this year. “I have played under a few managers, but I would say Tom and OB’s are probably the people who have got the best out of me since being at Thamesmead. “I didn’t know of Tom or OB’s before joining last season, but they believed in me and that was important to me which is why I’m enjoying my football again. Tom and OB’s just want the best from all of us because they see the potential that we all have…” Finally, our “Five First’s” as we ask everyone the same five questions… First football kit bought (either for you or by you)? An Arsenal red kit with Merson on the back from my Mum. First album/CD owned? Eminem Slim Shady. First football match attended? I won tickets for England vs Brazil as Ronaldo was my hero back then. It was a dream come true, only we had a Disney holiday booked and I couldn’t go, I wasn’t too happy about that, so my first match was at Charlton with my seven-a side team when I was around seven-years-old. First car owned? Vauxhall Corsa. First foreign holiday? Florida.

CRAIG’S CORNER <

CRAIG GIBSON THE coach

Welcome to Princes Park our new home - Jamie and Greenie have finally let me write some words for the programme, so here goes! Since my last notes we have had two very tough games in the Trophy against AFC Hornchurch and a away league match at Chipstead, as the editors have told me they need this before we played Herne Bay the other night.

As expected they were very direct and physical, this unfortunately led to another two of our players having to depart the field with injuries.

In the Sunday Trophy game, I thought we performed admirably and even more so when you consider the lengthy Injury list we have at the moment.

However the lads stood up to the challenge and went toe-to-toe with the opposition. The work rate was immense and, while at times in the second half we were under the cosh, I am certain a draw was a fair result over the ninety minutes.

We only had three fit substitutes on the bench and one of those was our reserve keeper!

I was personally very happy we had a replay on “my” side of the water, saved me some money on

PAGE 28

THAMESMEAD TOWN V CRAY WANDERERS

that Visa I have to have to get in & out of Kent. Anyhow, we have often referred to our performances as a “box of chocolates” since you never know quite what you will get. Well in the replay It was evident the box of chocolates were the same as we enjoyed on Sunday in the first game. The lads were, to a man, magnificent! We played the better football from start to finish and then put bodies on the line in the last twenty minutes, as the home side tried

to force their way back into the game - if John Wayne and Richard Widmark had ridden down the middle of the pitch it couldn’t have been more like the “Alamo”, but we stood firm & repelled wave after wave of attack to see out the game and in all honesty over the two games we deserved the victory. The younger ones please refer to Mummy and Daddy and one of the great movies!

> CRAIG’S CORNER

Seriously we have to remember Hornchurch are unbeaten in the league at this stage and their only defeat was away to AFC Hereford in the FA Cup. That should tell you and the lads that actually if we can find a little consistency to go along with the talent & dare I say hard work, we can achieve, we just need to believe! Last weekend at Chipstead, away, for once I arrived early!! I have to say the people at Chipstead were most welcoming and look to have a very nice club they are building. We made hard work of the game, but never really looked in trouble as we came away with all three points thanks to a goal in each half without reply. I’m not sure at the time of writing how we fared against Herne Bay on Wednesday night, but hopefully the box of chocolates was good and we knew what we would get? And don’t forget that next up is the Battle of Hastings 1017 on Tuesday night! Yes you read it correct - Tuesday night away at Hastings! WOW! Enjoy the game today. Craig Gibson First-team Coach
