THE MANAGER

THE MANAGER

STEVE HOUSHAM May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of FC United Of Manchester to the Eon Visual Media Stadium this afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome back to another home game and welcome to our visitors FC United Of Manchester. We have had two games and two disappointing results. Firstly our FA Cup game against 1874 Northwich. It was a game we really wanted to win and progress in such a great competition. It was a tight game and it looked like we were going to get a replay, we stood firm against a team who gave everything in the first half. After settling down, we did a bit better in the second half, but got undone by a mistake of our own when we gave a silly free-kick away in a dangerous area. From the free-kick we scored an own-goal and, although we had a couple of chances to level the score, we didn’t and our FA Cup came to an abrupt end. We then went to Stockport County with three new faces on board from Rotherham. The new lads settled in well and for 30 minutes of the game we gave a good account of ourselves, but we was yet again undone by some sloppy defending to go into the break 2-0 down. We then come out and scored the goal of the game through new signing Darnelle Bailey-King and it gave us a spark to say game on, but within two minutes of the goal, more sloppy defending put the game to bed again. Then to rub more salt into the wounds, we gifted them another goal, it was a scoreline we didn’t deserve, but we can not carry on gifting

goals to the opposition and it’s something we will work on to put right. Our fixture today is against a side who find themselves also at the wrong end of the table, so we will do our best to make sure we kick-start our season and get three much-needed points. It’s non-league day, too and we welcome all fans today, but also a set of supporters who have come from Holland to support us. I hope to put a display on for them and you and also get the three points we really need. Enjoy the day and get behind the lads they will fight and we need you to support them all the way. Up the Villagers! Steve Housham First-Team Manager NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

NON-LEAGUE DAY

NON-LEAGUE DAY

07/10/2017

Following another successful event last year, Non-League Day (NLD) will return for an eighth consecutive season today. NLD was launched in 2010 as an event to give non-league clubs in the English National League System a chance to promote themselves during an international break when Premier League and EFL Championship clubs have the weekend off and England are not playing on the Saturday. This year’s event also enjoys the added bonus of not coinciding with international matches for any of the home nations which frees up more clubs and fans in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales to also take part if they wish. As in previous seasons, thousands of pounds are expected to be raised by fundraising fans for good causes led by NLD’s official charity, Prostate Cancer UK. For information on fundraising ideas and other tools for clubs supporting Non League Day 2017, visit www. nonleagueday.co.uk. Non-League Day was set up by James Doe in 2010 as a social media experiment, after being inspired by a pre-season trip to Devon to watch Queens Park Rangers play at Tavistock. It has now grown to become an annual part of the football calendar, backed by Premier League and Football League clubs, MPs, celebrities, media organisations, charities and most importantly the non-league clubs themselves and the fans who turn up on the day. Always scheduled to coincide with an international break, Non-League Day provides a platform for clubs to promote the importance of affordable volunteer led community football. while giving fans across the country the chance to show support for their local nonleague side. 4

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

What does non-league football mean to you? My favourite thing about non-league is how close you can get to the action. It’s the opposite of the increasingly sanitised spaces of the Football League and beyond. You can hear every word that’s said and feel every tackle. Nick Quantrill Writer My favourite thing about non-league is seeing how much the standard has improved through the years and now seeing EFL and Premier League clubs actually looking into the non-league to find talent or the next and up and coming player. Adam Virgo Ex-Footballer & Football Pundit I love the friendliness with fans and players. The great atmosphere, cheap admission prices and the feeling that you count and are not just a number in a crowd. Darren Norton VFTAE Fanzine Your club is like your family and everyone gets involved to help. It’s a lot cheaper and you feel valued as a fan, especially as you can talk to the players and manager. Sam Shepherd FanaticHull What do I love about non-league? The unpredictability that any team can beat anyone. Adam Bolder Ex-North Ferriby United Player

THE OPPOSITION

FC UNITED OF MANCHESTER

Picture credit: Mark Lee North Ferriby United’s clash with FC United Of Manchester already has the feel of a ‘six-point’ fixture and neither will want to lose this game as they battle to avoid relegation. The Villagers will be the fresher of the two sides having had a blank week last weekend, while FC United were in FA Cup action against Stockport County ironically the team Ferriby last played. A late penalty from Steve Irwin ensured the game went to a draw, as FC United earned a replay via a 3-3 thriller. The two sides replayed on Tuesday

night and remarkably, despite having both Michael Connor and Matty Hughes sent off, FC United claimed a 1-0 victory. Tom Greaves was the Reds second half goalscorer as FC United progress through to the next round where they travel to AFC Telford United. In the league, FC United have struggled, just like Ferriby, and sit 20th, two places and five points better off than the Villagers. While it may still be fairly early in the season, this game could act as a catalyst for either side should they get the win. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

THE OPPOSITION

FC UNITED OF MANCHESTER

RECENT HISTORY

The club set up in protest to Malcolm Glazer’s takeover of Manchester United’ is a statement often used to describe FC United. But while there is no doubt that FC would not have happened without the American invasion, it was the catalyst, the final straw, but not the sole reason. The material theft of a Manchester institution, forcibly taken from the people of Manchester, was the tip of a pyramid of destruction, with changing kick off times for the benefit of television, soulless all-seater stadia full of ‘new’ supporters intent to sit back and watch rather than partake in the occasion, heavy handed stewarding and ridiculously priced tickets propping it all up. By May 2005 some supporters had had enough. The failure to prevent Glazer and repeat the successful repulsion of Rupert Murdoch in 1998 resurrected a ‘last resort’ idea from that previous campaign and the FC United wheels were put in motion. A group of individuals determined to continue the fight formed a steering committee and FC United of Manchester was delivered. Critics of the idea argued that if supporters were disgruntled with the Premiership then why didn’t they go and support other local cash-strapped clubs instead of setting up their own? But that wouldn’t have been theirs would it? It wouldn’t have been United and it wouldn’t have been right to takeover another club after they had just been taken over themselves. Nor could they drift off in various directions and be lost to each other and maybe football forever. They wanted to maintain the momentum of the protest, to stick together, to sing United songs, to reminisce and bring back the good bits of the good old days. They wanted Our Club, Our Rules and they got just that, a member owned democratic, not-forprofit organisation created by United fans. A club accessible to all of the Greater Manchester

community, dedicated to encouraging participation of youth whether it be playing or supporting and to providing affordable football. The steering group did an amazing job in a short space of time including the appointment of the club’s first manager Karl Marginson. Only a fortnight old, the club played its first game at Leigh on July 16, 2005 in front of an official crowd of 2,552. It ended with an exuberant pitch invasion and players, new heroes, being carried off shoulder high. Probably the first time such jubilant scenes had been witnessed after a goalless friendly. The following week it was off to AFC Wimbledon, the club that gave them so much help and inspiration after they themselves became victims of a businessman who wanted a new toy, albeit in different circumstances. The club secured a ground share with Bury FC at Gigg Lane and successfully applied for membership of the North West Counties Football League. United made their debut in division two at Leek CSOB. From that rain soaked competitive debut in August right through to the end-of-season party in April which saw over 6,023 people turn up to see the Reds lift the title, an unbelievable amount of fun was had at every game. There were unforgettable days, such as Blackpool where Bloomfield Road saw its biggest away following for 20 years when well over 4,000 Reds made the seaside trip. The club even had an end of season Euro away to Germany to face FC Lokomotiv Leipzig. But there were also the odd ‘downs’ sat sombrely alongside the many ‘ups’. In November they said farewell to two heroes. Steering group and board member Russell Delaney whose determination despite illness ensured FC United was born, finally lost his long battle against lung disease and United legend George Best also passed away. Both received their own minutes of applause. But sad losses aside, the season was an unqualified success on and off the pitch and the NWCFL first division provided the next challenge. MATCH ACTION

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED Bailey-King (46)

Saturday 23 September 2017 | Eon Visual Media Stadium | Att: 220 Despite the result and scoreline , this was a much better performance from Ferriby compared to recent games. The Villagers had a much more positive approach and regularly threatened the home goal. Debutants Mason Warren and Kuda Muskwe had good games. Warren was assured in defence, playing at left back in the first-half and rightback in the second. His tackling, distribution and positional play was good. Muskwe linked well with Darnelle BaileyKing up front and the pair caused problems for Stockport’s defence with their pace and strength. To be honest, County probably made as many mistakes as Ferriby, but the difference, and hence the result, was in finishing. Bohan Dixon drew a great flying save from Ross Durrant after 13 minutes and four minutes later, Durrant did well to block a shot from Sam Walker. Ferriby weathered this early storm. Curtis Bateson drew a save from Ben Hinchliffe. Muske thought he had equalised with a shot from the corner of the penalty area, but Hinchliffe produce a great flying one-handed save to turn the ball for a corner. The Villagers were stung after 30 minutes when County scored somewhat out of the blue after 30 minutes. A short throw and a low cross into the crowded goal area was touched home by Jason Oswell. Bateson twice went close to a goal before County doubled their lead after 39 minutes. Adam Thomas floated in a free-kick that was punched away by Durrant. The ball fell to Walker and with most of Ferriby’s defence at the near-post, Sam Minihan headed in unchallenged at the far post. Two-nil down at half-time was a little harsh 12

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

on Ferriby. They could have taken the lead and they could have equalised. Instead, they were punished for two fairly basic defensive lapses. This Ferriby side had far more spirit and this was obvious immediately after half-time. Muskwe’s pass from the right found BaileyKing and his shot from 18 yards flew past a flying Hichliffe to reduce the deficit. It was a relief to see Ferriby score, and this against a side that had had four successive cleansheets at home. The joy was short-lived as County scored within two minutes. Adam Thomas cut in along the goalline from the left and his low cross found Oswell in the six-yard box for a simple goal. The game was largely over after 57 minutes, a high ball to the edge of the area led to a mix-up between Mark Gray and Durant. The ball fell to Scott Duxbury who placed the ball in to an open goal. County finished the game on top, but credit to Ferriby for such a positive response. Results will come if they can continue with such positive approach. Russ Fry, Simon Russell and Bobby Johnson worked tirelessly in midfield. With the ball being played-out more from the back, the Villagers were able to reduce pressure on their own defence whilst creating problems for Stockport. Manager Steve Housham was in a mixed mood after the game: “We played better than we have done in recent weeks. We created opportunities, as many as Stockport. Against that we gave away four poor goals from a defensive point of view. We showed that we have players with the ability to compete at this level, We now need to focus on consistency and reducing errors. “

VIEW FROM THE STANDS

VIEW FROM THE STANDS by Sam Shepherd Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium where today we take on FCUM. It’s non-league day and this game is massive for both clubs. Both currently occupying two of the relegation spots in the National League North and the importance of this match cannot be underestimated, as both clubs will be desperate for the win. Ferriby need to find some form and quickly or it’s going to be a very long season for us. Without a win in eight, it’s getting to the stage where any positive result will do no matter how good or bad the performance is. If Ferriby hope to survive this is exactly the kind of game they need to be winning. You have to pick up points against teams around you in the table, especially at home and I’m sure Steve Housham will be hammering that message home to his players. Ferriby should be fresh and well rested for this game after having last weekend off due to the FA Cup. While it was disappointing to fall at the first hurdle in the cup, we need to use it as a positive today and really go at FCUM because they may be a little more jaded than Ferriby. Their opponents today were in cup action last weekend as they came from 3-0 down 22

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

at half time to draw 3-3 with Stockport. They have an extra 90 minutes in their legs, but they will be on a high after completing an epic second half comeback. Darnelle Bailey-King, Mason Warren and Kuda Muskwe may all make their home debuts today as Steve Housham has added some depth to his squad and that will be a massive help. Bailey-King got off to a flyer in a Ferriby shirt as he scored an excellent goal at Stockport last time out and hopefully he can become the consistent goalscorer we have been crying out for. If he does we will have a much bigger chance of survival. As I mentioned earlier, its non-league day and it’s always good to be at home to celebrate non-league football. We are welcoming some Dutch visitors who have made the trip to the UK to sample some nonleague football and I’m delighted they have chosen to visit Ferriby. I hope you enjoy your trip and witness an entertaining game fellas. Enjoy the game! Sam Shepherd North Ferriby United Supporter
