MANAGER’S COLUMN

STEVE

HOUSHAM

May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Sutton United to our home this afternoon, and I hope after an enjoyable game everyone has a safe journey home. Welcome to the Eon Visual Media Stadium as we take on Sutton United in the National League. Well a week has passed since our National League debut on TV. First of all I was so proud of the lads for their hard work and desire.

pitch this season, but his injury on Saturday saw him fracture his knee cap so will be out for up to 7 weeks which is a massive blow. We wish him a speedy recovery. On Saturday we also saw the

As always I hope the fans saw how much these players gave their all on Saturday and hopefully did you proud with there battling display.

They put their bodies on the line in the game, but yet again a late goal has denied us the three points. It was a disappointing end because we knew if we managed the game right on the pitch with so little time left we would have picked up a massive three points, but we have to stay positive and we enter today’s game two games unbeaten Also what a goal from Brogan live in front of the TV cameras! Brogs has got that in his locker he delivers such a great ball and I was delighted for him to score such a fantastic goal. It’s with regret that it’s not so good news on Simon Russell. He has been a great player for us on the

return of Curtis Bateson who has been a massive loss for us, so I was delighted to see him back on the pitch. It will still take time for Curtis to get firing on full gas, but we’re glad to see him back.

We need you now more than ever keep believing and keep being proud! Steve Housham First-Team Manager NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

THE VISITORS...

SUTTON UNITED

North Ferriby United were again left to rue conceding another late goal, and host Sutton United today hoping to climb up the table... North Ferriby United host fellow newly-promoted Sutton United at the Eon Visual Media Stadium knowing they need to start picking up victories sooner rather than later. The Villagers travelled to Woking last weekend, a match broadcast on BT Sport, and were again left disappointed after conceding a goal deep into injury-time to draw 1-1 after Steve Brogan had given the away side the lead with a superb free-kick. The draw now leaves Ferriby without a win in their past ten matches and, given teams around them claimed wins, they 4

slipped back to the bottom of the table. Today they host Sutton United, who earned promotion from the Vanarana National League South and have been on a fine run of form. The U’s are without a defeat in their past seven matches, of which they have won three, and climbed up to 13th-place in the standings. Steve Housham has tasked his side with going the month unbeaten, but this will be a test of their credentials with the form guide going in favour of the U’s.

CLUB HISTORY

CLUB HISTORY

SUTTON UNITED Sutton United FC was formed on 5 March 1898 when a meeting of two leading local clubs, Sutton Association and Sutton Guild Rovers, decided that they should join forces. The amber and chocolate colours of Sutton Association were retained, along with both clubs’ grounds. With two grounds available, Sutton fielded three teams in the Herald and Surrey Junior Leagues, but the loss of Western Road after a year led to the disbanding of the third team. The senior side’s first honour came in the form of the Herald Junior Cup in 1902. In 1910 Sutton assumed senior status and joined the Southern Suburban League, and it was during the next decade that the club gained use of their present home in Gander Green Lane. After finishing as Southern Suburban League runners-up in 1920 they were elected to the Athenian League at the end of the following season. League form was uncertain, and in 1926 U’s had to seek re-election, but were successful and recovered to win the championship just two years later. Sutton remained to the fore after World War Two, winning the Athenian League for a second time in 1946. In 1953 the club became a Limited Company, and five years later won the league for a third time as well as achieving a first success in the London Senior Cup. In 1963 U’s were one of four clubs elected to the Isthmian League.

After another league runners’-up position in 1971, a less successful period followed until the appointment of former player Keith Blunt as manager in 1977. Two years after his arrival U’s made history as the first and only winners of the Anglo Italian semi-professional tournament, and although he departed to Malmo soon afterwards, his assistant Barrie Williams went on to guide the club through a period of great achievement. FA Trophy runners-up in 1981, they were second in the league a year later as well as reaching the second round of the FA Cup, and won a cup treble of Isthmian League Cup, London Senior Cup and Surrey Senior Cup in 1983. Two years later U’s captured the Isthmian title, and having declined promotion, they repeated the success in 1986. Sutton seemed established as a Conference side but in 1991, having recorded a record Conference away win of 9-0 at Gateshead, they picked up just one point from their last eight games and were relegated for the first time in their history. Although often around the top of the Isthmian League U’s could not realise their hopes of an immediate return, and it was in cup football that they enjoyed more success. The appointment in 1996 of the management team of John and Tony Rains, saw a renewed assault on the championship, and after twice finishing third they realised Sutton’s ambition of returning to the

Conference in 1999. Unfortunately U’s found the gap to the Conference too wide to bridge, and seven consecutive defeats at the end of the campaign saw them finish bottom. In their first two seasons since rejoining Ryman League ranks Sutton failed to mount a serious promotion challenge, but in the 2003-04 season, with a side containing several graduates, a storming second half to the season saw them finish as runners-up to Canvey Island and gain inclusion in the newly formed Conference South. John Rains stood down as manager in March 2006, and he was replaced by Ian Hazel, but the 2007-08 season saw U’s, who had previously finished consistently in mid-table, relegated. Although the end to the season showed signs of promise under Jimmy Dack he declined to take the job on a permanent basis and Paul Doswell, was appointed in the middle of May 2008. After missing out on promotion in the play-offs in his first two seasons, he guided U’s to the Isthmian championship in 2011, and the following season saw them finish fourth in Conference South, losing to in the play-offs. Last season the U’s went one better and clinched the Vanarama National League South championship and gain promotion to the National League. NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

LEAGUE ROUND-UP

LEAGUE REVIEW Forest Green Rovers hold a nine-point lead at the top of the Vanarama National League after Mark Cooper’s side enjoyed a good Saturday in which they won, but none of their top five opponents managed to obtain a three-point haul. Forest Green faced a trick test at the Moss Rose against a dangerous Macclesfield Town side buoyed by their Emirates FA Cup success last weekend. But the leaders came away from Cheshire with all three points, courtesy of an early 2nd minute goal from Keanu Marsh-Brown. Second-placed Lincoln City were held to a dramatic 3-3 draw at Sincil Bank by improving Aldershot Town, who are now seventh. Ten-man Tranmere Rovers were held to a 2-2 draw at Prenton Park by local rivals Chester FC. In front of the highest attendance of the season to date in the league – 7,790 The biggest shock of the day came at Victoria Road where Dagenham & Redbridge were hammered 5-0 by Gateshead. Barrow AFC were the other top five side who were unable to find a win as they were held to a goalless draw at 12

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

Gander Green Lane by Sutton United. Dover Athletic moved to within a point of the top five after a 3-2 win at Solihull Moors, watched by their new boss Keith Bertschin. And to make it an even more commendable performance, the Whites played for all-bar the opening 26 minutes with ten-men following the dismissal of Jack Parkinson with a straight red card. Moors eventually took the lead a couple of minutes before half-time through Andy Brown. Chris Kinnear was able to re-organise his side at the break and they swiftly equalised when on 53 minutes when top scorer Ricky Miller found the net. And Miller added his second on the hour-mark. On 74 minutes, the Whites extended their lead with Miller`s third of the afternoon. And he completed his hat-trick However, the home side reduced the arrears when Akwasi Asante netted in the 4th minutes of time added on at the end of the game. Struggling York City earned a useful point from a 1-1 draw at the Silverlake Stadium against Eastleigh. Bromley welcomed an in-form

Boreham Wood side, whom they were promoted from the National League South alongside two years before. It was the home side who drew first blood 3 minutes before half-tome when an excellent cross from Dan Johnson sailed across the area and Dave Martin volleyed into the top corner of Grant Smith`s net to score what proved to be the winning goal. Struggling Braintree Town won for just the fourth time this season as they secured away success at the Racecourse Ground against Wrexham. Michael Cheek’s goal after 22 minutes proved enough for the visitors, despite the hosts missing several first half opportunities. Despite this excellent win, Braintree remain in the bottom four. Southport made it five league and cup games without defeat after edging a best-of-five win at the Merseyrail Community Stadium against a Maidstone United side who are now just a place above their hosts in seventeenth. Guiseley AFC moved off the bottom of the table after winning just their third game of the season with a 2-0 success against fellow strugglers Torquay United at Nethermoor.

GUEST COLUMN

View From The

STANDS The Villagers will take heart from their past two displays as regular columnist Sam Shepheard points out... Since my last column Ferriby have managed to halt their alarming run of defeats which had stretched to nine in all competitions. They haven’t managed to find a winning performance yet, but the two draws have been encouraging if not slightly frustrating in equal measure. The Wrexham game was a tight affair with the away side having more of the chances. Rory Watson’s reputation is growing quickly as he has been on hand to bail Ferriby out on several occasions this season and the Wrexham match was no different. He made several saves including one stunning one-handed effort that David De Gea would have been proud of. At the other end Ferriby failed to create many clear cut chances and it was a lacklustre display from the Ferriby forward line. The 0-0 draw was certainly something to build on going into Ferriby’s first ever league game televised live on BT Sport. The trip to Woking saw the bottom of the table Villagers face a Woking side who sat just 2 places above them in the league table. It certainly wasn’t difficult for the TV station to market the game as a relegation six pointer.

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED The Official Matchday Programme

The game didn’t start well for the Villagers as Simon Russell, arguably their best player this season, went off injured mid-way through the first half. Danny Emerton replaced him as Housham changed formation and Emerton acquitted himself well. Woking had a lot of the ball in the Ferriby half of the field and created a couple of chances that they certainly should have scored. It is well documented that Ferriby have struggled for goals this season having scored only 8 times in all competitions this season. In cases like this it often takes a

moment of magic to find the back of the net, enter Stephen Brogan. Ferriby won a free kick in a central position 25-yards out deep into firsthalf stoppage time. Brogan stepped up and curled a beauty into the

top right hand corner leaving the goalkeeper helpless. Ferriby did their level best to hang onto the lead as Woking dominated the second half. The hosts hit the post and the bar but it looked like Housham’s side may have held on for the win until the 93rd minute. A shot from outside the area sneaked past Watson at the near post to spark wild celebrations for the home side. To lose the 3 points so late in the game was gutting but Ferriby must take confidence from the last 2

performances and try and find that elusive win today against Sutton. Enjoy the game! Sam
