Good afternoon everyone and welcome to Bayliss Avenue and another edition of The Mead on a weekend when we remember historical figures of our country - the man who tried to blow up Parliament and those killed serving this great country!
on the afternoon when we welcome Bishop John Robinson Primary School as our guests - there’s exciting news about two amazing community schemes that the club are launching in the coming weeks; we also hear OB’s views on Tuesday’s game and there’s the latest from the chairman’s desk. Just a quick note of thanks to physio Carly, who despite being in her sick bed this week, still got her words to us... Please be safe at any firework displays, and let us all remember the fallen! Cheers Greenie

BOWDEN-BROWN May I welcome the officials, players and supporters of Wroxham FC, on this first November Saturday afternoon after their long journey to us, and after some hospitality and hopefully an enjoyable game they all have a safe return journey home.
them in free as we feel that the children may go home and tell their parents how much they enjoyed the experience, but whatever scheme you are involved in you are very welcome to SCT as the clubs guest.
May I also personally once again take this opportunity to welcome all those local resident’s that have decided to join us as new supporters through our season ticket initiative this season. I know that the benefit of the £30.00 season ticket for 4 has made a lot of difference to the families that are involved at this time with this initiative. I hope during the next few weeks we have more families join us and become new supporters.
May I also give a warm welcome to the children and staff from the Bishop John Robinson School that are visiting the club today, let’s hope they all enjoy themselves and are as vocal as the last school we had visiting us last week, maybe we should have a prize for the most vocal group of children, I know the players enjoyed the experience last week.
Also may I thank all the schools that have joined the passport scheme that allows all persons under the age of 14 to come to a match free of charge as long as they are accompanied by an elder who is only charged the concession price. And finally also all the schools that have arranged to visit the club during the season, the club allow

On Tuesday evening before the game, whilst I was having a crafty cigar and deep in thought sitting in the directors area staring into the November sky watching the planes flying over, a supporter came up to me and asked if he could have a couple of minutes as he was concerned about something. I said of course please sit down not knowing what to expect. But to be honest he was very
concerned for the club and in turn myself, he asked Mr chairman how do you keep going when you see your team, the same set of players that have played both good and bad, and involved in a great cup run, but they seem to have lost the ability to score and win league games since then. I replied immediately by saying of course I am worried about our league position I would not be a good chairman if I did not, but you have to take the good with the bad in football, I said players do not become bad players overnight, so you must keep the faith. I suppose it’s a little bit easier for me as I personally fund the club so it’s my money. If you have read Tommy post-match interviews lately he too, keeps working on things on the field at training, but once the players cross over the white line he can do no more. But I know he has taken great comfort by the way we have played in certain matches even if we had lost. I bought up our game against Maldon & Tiptree that I
CHAIRMAN’S NOTES
did not unfortunately manage to get too, here they are top of the league, yes we lost the game, but everyone at the game both home and away supporters said how well we played, and by knowing that I have appointed one of the best non-league managers and management team, they will put together a squad that will work for him and the club. So in answer to your comment I do not believe it’s my job to interfere just because we are losing, firstly my Director of Football Ian Docker would advise me that I have a problem, but to date both Ian, Tommy and I are all singing from the same hymn sheet, and until that changes I will not interfere with footballing matters. However worried I may be with the situation, I have been here before and I know what is required and that is having faith in the decisions I have made for the benefit of the club - Tommy’s appointment was one of them. I know Tommy will make whatever changes he needs, and lets all remember Tommy had to start from scratch with the squad with only a handful of players remain from last season, and although Tyler is playing well, he is a young keeper and I believe he will be a great keeper with more experience, and believe me we are lucky to have him. Tommy was the one person that convinced him to join the club, I believe losing Andy Walker with a terrible injury has been a factor of our recent form. Remember we were building a team around Andy before his injury, we miss his
experience around the place and believe me the games are quieter since Andy started his recuperation! So I finished by saying I am not a chairman that appoints a manager then tries to tells him how to build or run his squad. I can only be him giving my unconditional support as everyone knows. I give Tommy a wage budget, he uses that money to get the best players into the club within that limit. We are not the highest payers, but not the lowest, I do not believe money is always the bait to get young players to the club it’s being able to work with a good manager with a first class pedigree. Yes we are always looking for players, but only better ones that we might have at this time, tonight we have two new players at the club that I feel will give us something different on the field even if one is not available until today. So I thought I had answered the question in detail and then he hit me with the killer words, how do you personally deal with losing? Do you go home and kick the cat, knowing that it is your money out there? I replied I do not deal with losing never have done and don’t think you ever do. I was told by Jim Thompson, my mentor when I took over Maidstone United some 22 years ago, you have to accept you will never win all the games you play, but it’s the way you lose that matters as long as your team have played to their best of their ability and you have been beaten by a better team on the day so be it.
You get up dust yourself off and get on with the job, just like Tommy is at this time, I feel very honoured that I have been able to be part of the success that the clubs I have been involved with in the past so I suppose when I lose that feeling that will be the time to retire, but that time is not around the corner. The supporter then offered me a pint and said thank you for giving up my time to talk to him, I know that we do not have a large following in support, but those that do are some of the best, surely that’s why we run a football club - for the supporters to follow. Wearing their replica shirts, that’s one of the most rewarding feelings of running a club seeing young supporters wearing scarves and shirts through the town. Yes, I have loved being part of non-league football for the last 35 years, 22 years as the boss, but I could not have done it without the support of my family, and those volunteers that work around the club ensuring that we are always ready for match days. I will decide one day enough is enough, but I am reaching 70 next February and I am writing a new 5-year business plan for the club both the first-team, u21s, academy’s and our work in the community so I suppose that sums me up. Keep supporting the football club we all need you because that’s what we are here for, and I thank you for your continued support. Enjoy the match! Paul Bowden-Brown Chairman and Managing Director

ASSISTANT’S NOTES
Alex
O’BRIEN Good afternoon everyone and special welcome to Bayliss Avenue to the players, officials and the supporters of Wroxham who have made the long trip South to be here today. Tuesday’s draw with Haringey was extremely disappointing. The Tuesday before at Maldon we showed a real passion and desire to try and win a game of football whereas on Tuesday this week, I don’t think that we showed enough desire, quality on and off of the ball and enough work rate to go and win a game of football. It was disappointing to say the least, but we’ve played better than that this season and got no points – Tuesday
wasn’t great, but we got a point so we must build on that! We’ve got a massive November ahead of us – it’s like a mini-league as we’ve got teams who are around us and sometimes those are the hardest to play against and beat. It’s all right going to the side who are top of the league or near the top as you naturally raise your game, but these games that we have ahead of us are real dog fight games that is decided by one mistake or one bit of hesitancy which could get you a goal or lose you a goal. It’s a real, real tight scenario, but that’s the same in every league all over the country so we’ve
just got to get on with it. I have to admit that I’m massively surprised where Wroxham are in the league as I remember going there with Cray. They’re traditionally are a good side and well organised – very strong, scored goals and defend well. So it wouldn’t surprise me if they’re exactly the same here today! Unfortunately there are times when teams aren’t as successful as they’ve been the year before as some teams build and perhaps that’s what are visitors today are doing. But whatever happens we are in for another tough, tough game this afternoon.

ASSISTANT’S NOTES
We used last weekend’s “break” to strengthen the squad by signing a new right back and a new centre half. Leon’s an old fashioned centrehalf that can dominate aerially and vocally - as well as putting pressure on defenders that we already have at the club. He’s a good vocal voice and everyone we’ve spoken to about him has liked him. He joined us for training last Saturday and he fitted straight in. He’s just got to get a little bit of match fitness and I’m sure that he’ll get on and do his job. Harvey came in Tuesday night and did a good job. You can see that he’s taken on what he’s been taught at Welling United – he’s very comfortable on the ball and hopefully he’ll give us the seven and eight out of ten each week that we’re looking for. His positional sense is good and it was a good debut and hopefully he’ll just get better and
better. Two in sadly means one out and we’ve released Steve Springett. He needs to be playing football and unfortunately there have been a couple of things that have stopped him playing. He’s left on very good terms – he’s a great lad; Tommy and I have worked with him before and wherever he goes and whatever he does we wish him all the best! Greenie tells me that we have the youngsters from Bishop John Robinson, and that’s great for all of us to have them here today. It shows that we want to take the club out into the wider community and if we can get the youngsters early and show them that it’s not all about the Premier League and players who get silly money – what we do is real football! The majority of the youngsters who want to play the game will probably
end up at this level. It’s a massive, massive learning curve to play nonleague football; it’s great socially and you meet new friends. The youngsters who came down from Foxfield School a couple of weeks ago were brilliant – they sung their hearts out and were still singing despite us losing the game to Thurrock. It gave everyone a lift and long may that continue for everything they bring to the day’s that we have school’s visit us. The players love signing the boys and girls autograph sheets and their programmes and having their pictures taken with the kids – it even makes some of them feel like superstars for a few minutes… Have a great day, and hopefully you’ll be our lucky charms! In her regular column, first-team physio Carly Payne brings us up to date with the current injury list...
Welcome today to Bayliss Avenue as the boys take on visitors Wroxham. With back-to-back games coming at us thick and fast the last month or so we all welcomed to chance for a Saturday off last week which saw the boys in for an early training session instead. Tuesdays game was very quiet and not the way we had all hoped to start November, but the boys know they must do better and that starts
today. On the injury front I’m pleased to let you know Joe Vines has started running again and we are hopeful he will resume back to full training in the next week ready for his return to the squad. Walks appears to be making great progress in his road to recovery, some of you may have seen him around the ground lately as he’s been along to support the boys in recent weeks.
Aside from little niggles and general conditioning problems the boys seem to be in good shape and let’s hope that continues. Enjoy today’s game and let’s get this winning run started today. Take care. Carly Payne First-team Physio

SECRETARY’S DESK
Good afternoon everyone, welcome to SCT for today’s Ryman League match, I welcome our visitors today from Wroxham and hope they enjoy their short stay with us. Tuesday’s home game against a hard working Haringey Borough side saw us collect a point in a 1-1 draw, which on the night was a fair outcome. We started really well Josh Oyinsan putting us ahead after only 6 minutes, but Haringey did peg us back and take a share of the points back to north London. Tommy continues to try and add to the squad to aid our fight to get
out of the bottom zone of the table, it is proving difficult as the financial requests of players seem to have gone off the scale at the moment and we as a club have to work within the budget set and Tom is more that aware of that scenario.
against Romford has been lost due to their progress in the FA Trophy, that fixture is now 11th January, whilst we now travel to Witham on the 12th having brought that game forward from March so at least we don’t have another Saturday off.
On the player front Harvey Brand made his debut on Tuesday, Harvey has previously been with Welling United and Chatham Town. Today may see another new signing Leon Smith make his debut, Leon is an experienced central defender who we have signed from Barkingside, and we do welcome both lads to the club.
On Tuesday we travel to Hanwell in the London Senior Cup with the winners being away to either Clapton or Greenwich Borough. Enjoy today’s match Dave Joy Club Secretary

WROXHAM
If ever there was a time to call a game a “six-pointer” it’s today as Thamesmead Town host Wroxham.
The two clubs are at the wrong end of the table and know they need to address their form sooner rather than later with game coming thick and fast. The problems Wroxham are having stem from a combination of goalshy forwards and a fragile defence. Of the 17 matches they have played
14
THAMESMEAD TOWN The Official Matchday Programme
they have shipped in 36 goals second worst in the league, while having the worst goal-to-game ratio. Victory for the Mead today could see them close the gap to safety while victory for today’s visitors would see them leapfrog Thamesmead and potentially Great Wakering Rovers depending on their result. One thing is clear Thamesmead must not underestimate their opponents or face a 9th league defeat of the season.
CLUB HISTORY Wroxham Football Club was formed in 1892 by Mr G.E. Preston, an ex-Norfolk Captain; in the early days they played on Wroxham Park, sporting the rather natty colour combination of pink and black!
At the start of the 1963/64 season they applied to become founder members of the Anglian Combination and although early years in the new league saw little success, things took a turn for the better in the mid 70’s as rapid progress was made through the divisions and in 1974/75 they won their first major trophy, the Norfolk Junior Cup. In season 1975/76 they went one better, winning their first ever league title, the Division Two Championship and the following season the run of success continued as the Division One crown was secured at the first attempt. The Premier Division title was won for the first time in 1981/82 and it was successfully defended for the next three seasons. After missing out in 1985/86. the following season saw them capture the title for a fifth time. Season 1988/89 saw them accept a new challenge as they were accepted into membership of the Eastern Counties League’s newly formed First Division. It was a challenge that was successfully met as their tremendous run of success continued as they pipped Halstead Town on goal difference to become the Divisions first ever champions. Promotion to the Premier Division followed and after initially heading the table, they ended the season in a highly respectable twelfth place. 1990/91 saw them consolidate our position in the Premier Division,
finishing four places higher up the table in eighth position. 1991/92 marked the beginning of another period of incredible success for them as they won the League Championship . They marked their centenary in season 1992/93 and fittingly it provided the pinnacle of their achievements. They completed a magnificent treble.
The following season saw them making the record books again, joining an exclusive club by capturing a hat-trick of League Championships. 1994/95 saw the First Team finish runners-up to Halstead Town, whilst the First Team finished 3rd in the League behind Halstead Town and Diss Town before going on to regain the League Championship with a record 109 points. 1997/98 saw the double repeated with Swaffham Town being beaten 3-1 in the Norfolk Senior Cup Final before just pipping Ely City in the penultimate game of the season to take the title for a fifth time. Season 2000/2001 was something of a disappointment, although they still attained a highly respectable 6th. 2002/03 managers Marty Hubble and Peter Smith resigned, with Club Captain Darren Gill taking over the reins, but despite the disruption, they still finished as runners-up in the League for the second successive season and won the League Cup at Brewers Green Lane, beating Clacton Town 2-1. The following season saw the man behind the club’s tremendous record in the 80’s and 90’s, Bruce Cunningham, return as manager. An early season blip in form meant that they had to be satisfied with a third place finish in the league Season 2004/05 saw Bruce Cunningham in sole charge, but they had to settle for a fifth place finish in
THE OPPOSITION
the Premier Division. Damian Hilton took up the reigns for season 2005/06 and he was joined in the middle of the campaign by former Norwich City favourite Greg Downs. The new pair had to be content with an 8th placed finish in the league but 2006/07 was a record breaking one for the Club as the side lost just 2 league games all season, conceding a miserly 27 goals and scoring 107 in the process which saw the Eastern Counties Premier Division return to Trafford Park for the first time since 98/99. In 2010, Wroxham won promotion to the Ryman League after winning the Eastern Counties League for the 8th time in 2011/12. The team underperformed in their first season at Step 4, batch and his Assistant Steve Eastaugh then resigned with an exodus of senior players to AFC Sudbury. Pawel Guziejko took over the reins for the following season which resulted in the club relying on a reprieve to stay up after finishing 3rd bottom. Guziejko was relieved of his duties following the appointment of former stalwart Stu Larter. In his first season, Larter’s side made the step up from Thurlow Nunn football to the Ryman North with consummate ease finishing in 8th place despite holding a play-off position until well into April. After “second season syndrome” Larter resigned last February and was replaced by another former manager Damian Hilton who had steered Norwich Utd to aThurlow Nunn league & cup double. Unfortunately Damo was unable to avoid finishing in a relegation position but Wroxham stayed up following another reprieve. Hopefully this will not be necessary this season as he starts with a clean slate!

Good afternoon and here’s wishing all the best for Tom ,Alex and the lads today. As these notes were being written, our lads have been preparing for the league game against Dartford and I’m hoping we can get closer than our cup defeat 2 weeks ago. The lads took a lot of heart from this match and Andy Pugh their coach was very complimentary of our lads performance. Andy is the current centre forward for Dartford’s first-team and a player who I coached when he was at Gillingham - we can all take a lot of heart from his kind sincere words. Moving on, we are currently looking for a goalkeeper who wishes to come on board. Nathan is doing a fine job for us, but he is an outfield player and needs to be allowed to continue his development. I’ve been given the middle pages this afternoon to officially launch a
branch new scheme. We are shortly to be running trials for our new venture at Long Lane JFC, and I’m pleased to announce the “TTFC Sports Technology Apprenticeship scheme” where players will be employed by the club and paid whilst combining an education course. The trials are being held at Long Lane JFC on the dates stated on the opposite page with the first in two weeks time - Saturday 19th November. For more exciting details please check the clubs website or pick up a leaflet this afternoon or at Long Lane JFC. Yours in sport. Our reply came from Head-teacher KEN MASLIN… “On behalf of the staff, parents and children of Bishop John Robinson Church of England Primary School, I would like to express my gratitude to Mike Green and the management team of Thamesmead Town Football Club for inviting us to the first Saturday VIP ‘school of the day’ match,” “Bishop John Robinson in Hoveton Road is one of a cluster of Royal Borough of Greenwich Thamesmead schools who are working together on a ‘Thamesmead Charter’ which sets out a cultural entitlement for all children who attend school in Thamesmead. Our aim is to utilize resources within Thamesmead, Greenwich and further afield to make sure that by the time they leave primary school, children will have a common experience of sport, music, theatre, cinema and outdoor activity. One aspect of
this entitlement it to be able to experience live sport and this is the reason why we are here today.” “Working with Mike, the dream is that all children who attend school in Thamesmead will have the opportunity to visit Thamesmead Town FC for free as part of a ‘Passport’ scheme. Coaches from the club are also going to be visiting schools for football training (indeed Gary paid us our first visit last Thursday) and each school will have an opportunity to be guests of honor at a match like this one in which children will have the chance to meet the players and managers of the club as well as watch the game.” “As we are the first school to benefit from this most generous offer on a Saturday afternoon, the children are all the more excited. Regular fans and players can expect some excited cheering from the club’s newest fans.” And this afternoon, we extend a warm welcome to Mr Maslin, and BJR’s PE co-ordinator CLARE SECCOMBE along with the boys and girls from the School and hope that you all have a great night with us… and enjoy the new ongoing partnership between your school and TTFC.

THE UNDER-21S
THE
UNDER-21s Good afternoon everyone,
We had a good couple of weeks – albeit very busy – with the under-21s. We made the trip to the outskirts of Southend on Thursday evening to face Great Wakering – the result of which sadly came after the printing deadlines for today. In our last game we went to Cray Wanderers and came away with our first away win of the season in a 3-2 win. We included a couple of firstteam players needing match time and those recovering from injury. The boys responded brilliantly and the win was sealed by a great hat-trick from Ike Feehi. Tommy’s already asked for several members of the squad to be involved in the London Senior Cup game at Hanwell Town next Tuesday, and that’s a huge boost for all the boys knowing that the gaffer is keeping his eye on their progress. It’s been a busy week off the field and it’s going to be great to see the youngsters from Bishop John Robinson School here this afternoon! On Thursday afternoon, I spent an hour or so at the school for our first coaching session with a member of
our passport scheme which Mike and I have been working on in over the last couple of months. Mike’s been busy with the ground work and now it’s the turn of me and the coaches to get the kids actively involved – who knows we may even uncover some new players – but we’ll have fun whatever happens! I’d like to thank Mrs Seccombe (the PE co-ordinator) and Mr Maslin the BJR head-teacher for making both Greenie and I feel so welcome! It really is just another great initiative and, alongside the academy, our new apprenticeship scheme and the Community Coaching which starts on Thursday – Greenie tells me the flyer will be printed opposite these notes – it all highlights once again how we as a club are committed to the young people of Thamesmead – I’d personally once again like to thank the chairman for all of his support and backing as we to roll out his dream for the next generation! Good luck to the gaffer and the boys today!
