BOSTON UNITED North Ferriby United host an in-form Boston United looking to get back to winning ways on home soil.

The Villagers tasted defeat at the Eon Visual Media Stadium in the last home game losing out 8-7 on penalties after a 0-0 draw with Stalybridge Celtic. That loss for Ferriby saw them exit the FA Cup after equalling the furthest they have reached in the competition for the second time. The task ahead of Ferriby won’t be easy as they entertain a Boston side one place ahead of the club in 7th. The Pilgrims have picked up 26 points from their 16 games coming from eight wins and two draws - losing a further six games. A surprising statistic is that Boston have the fourth worst defensive record in the division conceding 25 goals. Their 26 goals scored has been a major attributing factor to their lofty position with eleven of them coming from the impressive Dayle Southwell. A win for Boston could see them climb up to fifth if results go their way whereas a victory for Ferriby would see them close the gap on the top sides.

MANAGER: Dennis Greene Former St Neots Town and Histon manager Dennis Greene was appointed Boston United boss in March 2013. He had initially lost out to Graham Drury in December 2012 when the vacancy was first available — but took control following Drury’s illfated spell in charge of the Pilgrims. As a player, Greene played for a number of non-league clubs, including the likes of Harlow, Stansted, Epping, Bishop’s Stortford, Stambridge, Chelmsford City, Wycombe Wanderers and Dagenham and Redbridge.

Boston United

CLUB HISTORY Boston United was founded in 1933 as a successor to a club called Boston Town. Their first game was a 3–1 defeat at home to Grimsby Reserves on 26 August 1933. They then had a moderate amount of success in various leagues, including the Midland League and Southern League. The club’s FA cup run of 1955–56 included a 6–1 victory at Derby County, then playing in Third Division North, with Geoff Hazledine scoring a hat-trick. This was a record away win by a non-league team against League opponents in the FA Cup. This

set up a Third Round match against Tottenham Hotspur of the Football League First Division at White Hart Lane on 7 January 1956. The match against Tottenham Hotspur was played in front of a crowd of 46,185. The Pilgrims lost 4–0, but the match was more notable for the travelling support. Over 10,000 Boston supporters attended the game. They were founder members of the Northern Premier League in 1968, of which they were champions four times, and of the Alliance Premier League (now the Football Conference) in 1979. However, their Northern Premier League title wins were not enough to gain them election to the Football League, and when

they won the title in 1978 they surprisingly missed out on league status in favour of runners-up Wigan Athletic, who took the Football League place previously held by Southport. In 1985 Boston United went to Wembley for the first and only time in their history for the FA Trophy Final of the 1984–85 season. Boston lost 2–1 to Wealdstone in front of 20,775, with Chris Cook scoring United’s only goal. Boston United finished third in the Conference in 1988–89, but were unable to build on this and were relegated to the NPL in 1993. They were transferred to the Southern League, winning the title in 2000, and went fully professional in 2001. In their first season as a professional club, Boston won the Conference and were promoted to the Football League. However, in the wake of their promotion, Boston’s manager, Steve Evans, and former chairman, Pat Malkinson, were charged with breaking the Football Association’s rules over the registration of players. Both men

North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

received bans from the FA, and the club were fined and docked four points from their first season in the League. After their promotion to the Football League, Boston never really looked like challenging for promotion to the third tier of the league and most of their time from 2002 was spent in mid-table, with occasional flirts with relegation and the play-offs.

campaign in 10th place under the guidance of Tommy Taylor, United were still in administration by the 2nd Saturday of May in 2008. This meant they were relegated again to the Northern Premier League Premier Division for the 2008–09 season. Despite coming out of administration just before the start of the new season anyway, Boston United failed to have this decision overturned.

In May 2007 Boston were relegated from Football League Two on the last day of the season. Steve Evans and his assistant Paul Raynor on 27 May resigned from the club, and two days later joined Crawley Town.

A much more favourable campaign the following season saw The Pilgrims finish 3rd in the league where they won the play-offs, beating Bradford Park Avenue in the final to earn promotion back to the Conference North.

Because of the relegation Boston were originally scheduled to play the 2007–08 season in the Conference National but this position was immediately placed in doubt after the club’s chairman Jim Rodwell entered Boston into a Company Voluntary Arrangement late in their last game so that 10 points would then be deducted in the 2006–07 season instead of the 2007–08 season. Although this meant that Boston started the 2007–08 season without a points penalty FA rules dictated that they be demoted 2 divisions as a result of HM Revenue & Customs placing a restriction into the CVA of Boston not being allowed to pay football creditors 100% of what they were owed. They therefore played the 2007–08 season in the Conference North division, two steps below the Football League. This would be United’s first season under the new ownership of David Newton and Neil Kempster, who took control of the club over from ex-Chairman Jim Rodwell.

Joint managers Rob Scott and Paul Hurst resigned from the club in 2011 and were appointed joint managers of Conference National side Grimsby Town. Club chairman David Newton revealed he was beginning legal proceedings against the pair and Grimsby Town, for breach of contract. The Pilgrims wasted no time appointing former Boston player Jason Lee and current player Lee Canoville as joint caretaker managers. With only 7 Conference North games remaining, the pair guided United to a 3rd place finish in the league setting up a play-off tie against

Despite finishing the 2007–08 North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

Guiseley. Boston lost the first leg 1–0 at Nethermoor Park but fought back in the return leg winning 3–2 at the Jakemans Stadium to take the match to extra-time and penalties. Boston went out losing 2–3. After a decent start to the 2012/13 season, Boston started to drop off the promotion pace, with a 7-game winless run from November to mid-December not aiding their cause. More inconsistency followed, and Jason Lee was sacked. Graham Drury took over within the same week but left the club after less than 2 months. Dennis Greene took over soon afterwards, but after a good start couldn’t help the club from finishing higher than a poor 16th place, just 5 points above the relegation zone. The following season was a marked improvement in both league and cups. Whilst Boston fell at the 2nd hurdle (2–0) at Brackley, they made the last 32 of the FA Trophy with wins over Redditch and Southport, before a 2–0 loss at Tamworth. In the league, they held on to a top 5 spot for most of the season and never fell below 8th, but they couldn’t keep up with late surges by Hednesford and Guiseley, ending 1 place and 6 points off the playoffs in 6th

MATCH REPORT 2 0

NORTH FERRIBY UNITED Gray (16), King (85)

BOSTON UNITED

December 28, 2014 | Conference North | Eon Visual Media Stadium | Att: 389 After Boxing Day’s disappointing performance at Gainsborough, Ferriby bounced back in style to gain a deserved victory over Boston United.

Boston opened with mark Jones firing wide from 20-yards whilst The Villagers responded with a promising attack that ended with Jason St Juste was tackled to gain a corner as he was about to shoot. The only goal of the half came after 16 minutes from the only really threatening attempt either side had on goal. Mark Gray rising high in the goal area to head home Bolder’s beautifully flighted cross. Neither keeper was forced in to a save for the rest of the half as occasional attempts on goal from both sides went wide or high. Boston came out in the second-half determined to find an equaliser and pressed Ferriby for much of the half. However, like the first-half, their endeavour had little end-product as Ferriby defended well and closed down the visitors in midfield. This was largely reminiscent of Ferriby’s

recent FA Trophy victory at Boston. Boston twice came close to a goal in the 48th minute. Ferriby keeper Adam Nicklin turned round a shot from Jamie McGhee. The resulting corner finally ended with Scott Garner forcing Nicklin into a good save from close-range. These attempts were the closest Boston came to an equaliser. Louis Bruce saw a header from 18-yards taken by Boston keeper Joel Dixon. Liam King then saw a shot blocked by one of his own players before curling a second shot Dixon. Ryan Kendall also saw a shot held by Dixon. Boston only had two attempts on goal with Dayle Southwell sending both his efforts wide. Ferriby clinched the game after 85 minutes. King ran on to Nathan Jarman’s flicked header to slide the ball past the advancing Dixon. Ferriby finished the stronger and went close twice in added tome. King’s low shot was turned round by Dixon and Jarman headed a St Juste cross wide.

VIEW FROM THE

SID ELINE S

Sam Shepherd discusses the cup exit and the end of the unbeaten run... There is no hiding the fact that it’s been a difficult and disappointing ten days for Ferriby. We crashed out of the FA Cup in the cruellest way possible with Russell Fry missing the 16th penalty of a nail biting shoot out.

Ferriby then saw their impressive unbeaten league run come crashing to a halt. Nuneaton away was always going to be a tough game and will be for any side this season but Ferriby also had fatigue to deal with.

Over the two games Ferriby probably edged it over their opponents Stalybridge but they were unable to put their chances away and eventually paid the price. Stalybridge will now be looking forward to a potential upset at Doncaster Rovers today while we are back here for another league game.

Most of the side had played 120 minutes less than three days earlier and this showed in the first half.

Danny Clarke in particular will be cursing his luck as he could have had a hat-trick in the replay if it wasn’t for the Stalybridge keeper who made one fantastic save in particular late on to deny Clarke. Three days later to compound the disappointment of losing in the cup

Nuneaton blew Ferriby away and led 3-0 at half-time. To their credit Ferriby produced a much more spirited performance in the second-half and managed to nick a goal through veteran Adam Bolder. Danny Emerton looked impressive when he came off the bench and he caused the Nuneaton defence problems. It was also good to see Ross Armstrong get a run out and he looked assured in midfield. Nuneaton are a very good side and I would not be surprised to North Ferriby United The Official Matchday Programme

see them bounce straight back up to the conference. Ferriby went 12 games unbeaten in the league from the opening day of the season to October 31st and that is a great achievement. The task now is to go on another unbeaten run to keep in touch with the play-off contenders. Today promises to be another tough game with local rivals Boston United the visitors. This would be a great way to bounce back if we could pick up three points against one of our main rivals. Following today we face tough trips to Alfreton and Curzon Ashton before facing league leaders Fylde so if we can win today it will set us up nicely for the tough run of fixtures. Enjoy the game, Sam

North Ferriby United take on Alfreton Town next away from home in a game the club will be eager for three points to close the gap on the play-off places.

Founded | 1959 Nickname | The Reds Ground | North Street Capacity | 3,600 Manager | Nicky Law

Heading into this fixture the Reds have not won in three games with Boston United beating them 2-1 before exiting the FA Cup at the hands of Macclesfield Town. The side will have been disappointed not to take all three points against AFC Telford United and had to settle for one in a 1-1 draw.

CLUB HISTORY Alfreton Town Football Club is an English football club based in Alfreton, Derbyshire. The club participates in the National League North, the sixth tier of English football. The club was reformed after a merger between Alfreton Miners Welfare and Alfreton United in 1959. The new club was admitted into the Central Alliance North Division One in 1959, and within two seasons entered the Midland Counties League. In 1970, after a few seasons of finishing near the top, they won the league title, and won it again in

1973 and 1977. After the Midland League and the Yorkshire League merged in 1982, they won the Northern Counties East League in 1985, division champions in 1987, and joined the Northern Premier League in 1988. In 2003, the club won the First Division and the Derbyshire Senior Cup. After this turn of events, they won promotion to the Conference North. Alfreton have played in the Conference Premier since the 2011–12 season after sealing promotion by winning the Conference North title.
